bringing you Writer and Director Endre Hules of "The Maiden Danced to Death."

Tell us a little bit about your project and how long you've been working on it.
I had the first draft of “Maiden” ready in 2000. It has gone through many
transformations, funding debacles and reorganizations. I have completed two other
films before I could finally begin production in 2010 in a rather complex three-way
co-production. But the results were worth every minute of it.
Is there anyone you'd like to thank for helping out with this film?
Oh, yes. Pretty much everybody who was working on it, did over and beyond the call
of duty. Our producers, Gabor Garami, Michael Dobbin and Igor Pedicek navigated
the extremely traitorous waters of financing with amazing skill. Vilmos Zsigmond and
Zoltan Honti’s images made the film unforgettable, but Ferenc Kiss’ music and
Zoltan Zsuraffszky’s choreography make it stand apart from anything I have ever
seen. Then the wonderful actors and dancers and on and on… It was truly a labor of
love and I couldn’t be more grateful.

How does it feel to have your film part of the NewFilmmakers Screening at
Sunset Gower Studios?
I can’t wait! After 18 festivals from India to Korea, Germany, Spain and Canada, this
is our introduction to the Hollywood Industry. I have butterflies in my stomach.
What inspires you?
Originality and courage. I would rather see a not entirely successful, but courageous
piece, then a “well-made” one. All the greats in history busted existing traditions –
didn’t ignore them – and created new ones that the next generation had to reinvent.
Who are your influences and who do you admire?
I try to take inspiration wherever I can find it. I often rely on music. Shostakovich,
Philip Glass, Flamenco, world music always help me out from a creative rot. I admire
anyone who can pull off a successful movie. The chances are close to zero.

What lessons have you learned from the industry so far?
No matter what situation you are in, you are dealing with people, who want to be
treated as such. This goes all the way up and down the line.
If you could collaborate with anybody, who would it be?
I was extremely lucky in having a collaborator like cinematographer Vilmos
Zsigmond – and it was not because of his Oscar. I couldn’t have asked for a more
knowledgeable and generous partner. I hope to work with him again. Also, I would
love to work with Philip Glass on a film.
What is the toughest experience you've ever had to overcome?
Acting in a film, and directing it at the same time. It’s enough to drive you crazy. I’m
not likely to repeat it any time soon.
What is the best piece of advice someone has given to you?
You will always get what you want. The trick is to know in advance what it is…
What advice would you give to new filmmakers starting out in the industry?
Perseverance. You will get you chance – but then you must be ready to make the

I have just finished the screenplay for “The Flight,” the story of the first hijacking.
Seven unarmed kids made a desperate escape from Eastern Europe, knowing that
there was an armed secret agent on board. It’s a fascinating cat-and-mouse game
based on a true story adapted from Frank Iszak’s book, “Free for All to Freedom.”

What inspires you?
Celine Dion and her life’s work.
People who have taken risks, especially in comedy, have always influenced our
projects. Judd Apatow, Kristin Wigg, Tina Fay, Lauren Graham and Lenah Dunham
have completely transformed the way women are seen in comedy in the last ten
years. We also admire the greats, like Lucille Ball and the ever-controversial Joan
Rivers.
You can’t please everyone. We received a lot of hate mail about our short. Literally,
these people said we ruined their lives with our film. But then there were other
people who just “got” it who loved it. At the end of the day it’s important to remind
yourself that you can never reach everyone.
Celine Dion, naturally.
When we couldn’t get tickets to see Celine Dion because they were sold out. And
then our cat died. Her name was Celine.
Make your own work. Be prepared when opportunity arises. Also, don’t tell anyone
you like Celine Dion. I guess for us it’s too late…

The Contract is a film that began after a discussion with my father when he told me
about his worst fear; out-living his own children. When he said that, it stayed with
me for a very long time and eventually became the driving force behind the idea of
this film. From the first draft of the script to the final tweaks of color correction and
sound design, the process took us about one full year. We were all working full-time
at our day jobs during the process, so it was definitely a challenge.
There's just so many people that without their help, there would honestly be no film
at all. Thank you to everyone who helped us finance the film, everyone who
graciously gave their time and effort during production, and everyone who believed
in us along the way. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It's truly special for us because Myself (writer/director), Kelly Sullivan (producer),
Reba Rosenthal (producer), Jack Coleman (actor) and a few others on the
production all first met while working on the television series "Heroes" which shot at
Sunset Gower Studios. Its an amazing example of how some things really do come
full circle. We are honored to be screening at the studio where it all began for us.
What inspires you?
My love for the movies and my on-going dream of telling stories to anyone who will
watch.
My personal influences are amazing film-makers from the likes of Orson Welles and
Federico Fellini, to Soderbergh, the Cohens, Aronofsky, and PTA. I admire the
directors that bring new and inventive ways to telling a simple story and always
continue to push the envelope.
It's extremely competitive and takes no prisoners. Hard work, persistence, and the
undying passion for film-making is the only way to truly find success.

"The Contract" will be playing at the Sonoma International Film Festival in April as
well as The Palm Beach Festival Later in the month. Personally, I am developing a
pilot based on the idea of "The Contract," as well as a few other smaller projects.

I started the project 8 years ago. The film was inspired by the obsessive fans of the
Montana Grizzlies football team in Missoula, Montana, my hometown.

What inspires you?
People’s lives and their stories, the state of Montana, and creativity.
My father, James Kriley. He taught me so many life lessons that have really helped
make me the woman I am today.

Tell us a little bit about your project and how long you've been working on it?
When I was 16 years old (which was two years ago), I was doing an AP course
about Motion Picture and TV Production at UCLA and we had to write a story for the
film. When I gave my story to the professor, Duane Dell'Amico, he said we will not
be able to use your story because we do not have enough time, but he said, "Hold
on to this story. This is amazing, you should definitely make a movie. You've got the
talent kid."
I wanted to create something that will change the way we view things that are
happening in our country; in this case specifically people without health insurance
and things that lead or may lead people to do certain things when they face the
inevitable. The main question for me was: What happens if you are sick and you do
not have insurance? What do you do? I was encouraged by my parents to show the
story to my manager Ryan Glasgow and we shaped up the story together into what
it is right now. We started working on the project in May 2011 and we had the final
product in fall of 2011.

co-writer and executive producer, who believed in me and in this project, the director
Enrico Natale who's keen eye moved this project into a completely different level. I
would like to thank our superb actors Stephanie Jones who was my mom in the
movie, Erick Scott Woods as a creepy Mr Sargento, and wonderful Bill Zasadil, and
Bree Pavey. Our producers Renee Pezzotta and Alex Bram thank you for your
generosity and patience; PJ Gaynard our great cinematographer, Red Dragons are

I think making the decision of doing the project. Just the thought of financial side of
Like
making the movie is the scariest thing I think for every filmmaker.
Because when you're "in" there is no backing off and you never know how much
you'll have to spend even though you have set budget it ends up being more, much
more than anticipated.

Do not ever give up on yourself and your creations.
What advice would you give to new filmmaker starting out in the industry?
This business is not easy, there are lots of obstacles, even daily obstacles that you
have to over come and sometimes you'll doubt yourself, but if you give up, your
dreams will never come true for sure.

Glasgow "Good Job, Thanks" as a son "Stanley Jr." of the infamous Hollywood
casting director "Linda Livingston-Black" played by the great actress Stephanie
Jones.

Director
"Dumpling" is a story about a former boxer who believes that "you just don't know a
man until you fight him". When he completely fails to connect with his son, he
challenges him to a fight because that is his only way in which he knows how to
connect with people in his life.
This project started off as a play back in 2006 and it had readings at all the major
Asian American Theater companies in the United States, but it was never produced
so a part of me felt the journey was unfinished. That is why I wrote this as a short
film and decided to make it even though the film and the play have many
differences. I think it's just the idea of the "dumplings" being a metaphor for the
family that I had a major need to express.

How does it feel to have your film part of the NewFilmmakers Screening at Sunset
Gower Studios?
I think if this happened 7 years ago I would be more excited than I am now. Back
then I was much more self centered and ego driven. Now it's great to have my film
shown at film festivals and I am greatly humbled by the opportunity, but it doesn't
mean anything to me unless the work has an impact when people watch it.
What inspires you?
Authentic and vulnerable interaction and dialogue between people.
I admire Marvin Sims, Philip Gotanda, and Spike Lee. I had the privilege of being
mentored by Mr. Gotanda for 2 years when I was living in San Francisco. He instilled
in me a respect for the history and the people who came before me within the Asian
American theater and film community. He told me that if I didn't have anything to say
then I shouldn't be doing this.
Marvin Sims was a teacher of mine back in college. He renewed my faith in art and
myself after I was told by the faculty at Cal Arts that I shouldn't be an artist. He has
since passed but he still continues to be a major influence in my life and always will.

I don't really consider myself engulfed in the "industry" so I wouldn't know how to
answer that question. I've made a short film that has screened at some great
images of why...
festivals. I don't make a living at this so I am not exposed to what it really means to
be "in the industry".

and has never back down from speaking his truth.
I don't know how to answer this because looking back nothing was nearly as "tough"
as I thought it was at the time.

You should become a therapist.
Don't put all your eggs into one basket. It's okay to follow and explore other passions
that you have besides acting, writing, and directing. I cringe when I hear people say
that acting, writing, or directing is the only thing they are good at. I don't think they
give themselves enough credit. You can make a living pursing other things that you
love while also continue to follow your artistic passions. It doesn't have to be one or
the other. If you think of getting a job doing something else that you're passionate
about to SUSTAIN your dream of being an artist so you don't have to be working as
a waiter or bartender, I think you'll be better off in the long run.
But as far as artistically, the best piece of advice I can give anyone is just to take the
craft seriously because stories are important to society. Doctors heal lives but artists
make life worth living for so please take what you do seriously and treat it with
integrity. Being an actor, writer, or director is no different than being a concert pianist
or ballerina. It takes just as much time, effort, and commitment to the craft and at
times I feel that is somewhat lost.
Where can we expect to see you next? You can expect to see me continuing my
private practice as a mental health therapist in Redondo Beach and also working
with lower resource individuals, families, and couples at The Relational Center in
Miracle Mile.

BUGBABY first began its life as a short play, written for a benefit performance in
Summer of 2009. Struck with the swine flu shortly after being given a week's
deadline to write the play, Dan's fever somehow produced this weird tale of a sitcom
family with a newborn that just happens to be a giant insect. Although he was asked,
Dan prefers not to direct his own stage work, so the producer found Becky through
the sponsoring theatre company. Becky responded to the material and brought a lot
of creative new elements to the staging. The play received a great response from
enthusiastic audiences, and Becky and Dan began talking about making it into a
short film. Annick, our producer, and Drew, our executive producer, were brought on
board shortly after, money was raised through the generous donations of family and
friends, Mink Stole graciously accepted the role of Mrs. Tottifot (which was rewritten
for the screen with her in mind), an intrepid and talented crew was assembled, and
the project was shot in February 2010 and completed a few months later.

Literally everyone who worked on BUGBABY did it for peanuts or less, and they all
deserve thanks for their fantastic work. Specifically, though, our donors deserve
kudos for their unwavering and generous support of such a peculiar little film, and
we are forever grateful to the wonderful Mink Stole for agreeing to appear in the
movie.
It's great! Although BUGBABY has screened at dozens of festivals internationally
(and even won a few awards), many members of the LA-based crew have not yet
been able to view the finished film. We are extremely grateful to NewFilmmakers LA
for giving this chance not just to them, but for also for even more audiences to
experience our odd and amusing story.
What inspires you?
The glory of the world around us that allows each of us to see god in each and
every piece of his creation... Nah, I'm bullshitting you. This film was a collaborative
effort, and I'm sure each person involved would have a different answer to that
question. However, as the old adage goes, inspiration isn't nearly as important as
perspiration in creating quality work.

BUGBABY has many, many influences - I Love Lucy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and
other mid-century TV sitcoms; Tales from the Darkside; Eraserhead; Little Shop of
Horrors; and about a bazillion exploitation grindhouse flicks watched in grainy quality
on VHS, lost save the indelibly weird images that flicker through hazy, drug-addled
memories. And as you can see merely by the casting, the work of John Waters was
a huge influence from concept through execution, and probably the most collectively
admired by the filmmakers.
None, obviously, because we're still doing it. Or, perhaps, the lessons are plentiful,
and we are simply morons.
I'm sure all the core team members would have different answers on this, though I'm

sure they would have one thing in common: extraordinarily talented and respected
artists who try to change destructive cultural mindsets with their art, or have
succeeded in doing it. That, or literally anyone with money who's willing to pay us.

What, like, in the movie biz? Or with that "ever" included in the question, is this
finally a chance to tell you about a childhood raised by blind immigrant alcoholic
lesbian prostitutes in a twister-savaged double-wide filled with bloodthirsty
housecats, which was overcome in a comfortable ninety minutes because (thank
god) everyone realizes the dork is really a model once the eyeglasses come off?
The story is a natural tour-de-force of obvious audience manipulation, transparent
themes, shallow emotions and less satisfying content than a rice cake. And Tyler
Perry has expressed interest - or something resembling interest, or possibly disdain,
it's hard to say. Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Seriously, though - the cast and core crew are all educated, comfortably middleclass, able-bodied people with jobs and families. Whatever obstacles we may have
overcome just don't rank that high when you look at the bigger picture of the world,
and what hundreds of millions or even billions of less fortunate people have to
endure on a daily basis for years or a lifetime.
Well, this is a question that everyone would have their own answer for - so, lucky
readers, you get two answers instead of just one!
Don't take a job in entertainment just to get into the industry, unless you're doing
what you really want to do. I didn't listen - and totally understood a couple of years
later, when someone referred to me as "the receptionist who writes plays" instead of
a playwright.
It's in your best interest to be related to someone in the industry, or a have a large
amount of familial wealth to start yourself off. If you do not have these qualities, set
aside a few months to acquire them before embarking on your career. It'll be smooth
sailing for you from then on!
Dan and Drew are currently concentrating on the primary work of The Visceral
Company, which is live theatre focusing on the strange and macabre. Their next
project, a two-actor version of Henry James's terrifying classic "The Turn of the
Screw," opens May 10 at the Underground Theater in Hollywood.
