to life!
The ‘Take Me To The River’ Living History Program not only
screens a short or full-length version of this award-winning
film, but offers the unique opportunity to experience the
legendary ‘Take Me To The River’ musicians live and in person.
Integrating a screening, live music performance, a live
interview and master classes, the Living History Program
brings history to life for students, teachers and parents.
What better way to make history relevant and exciting to
students than through music and direct interaction with
those who lived it.
The ‘Take Me To The River’ Living History Program seeks to
inspire a deeper understanding of history, culture, and the
meaning of cross-generational collaboration.
Mission Statement:
• To bring history to life and create a deeper understanding and relevance
of civil rights, music history, and cross-generational collaboration.
• To further appreciation of American culture that has inspired and
influenced the world’s popular music.
• To promote tolerance and respect for all people and cultures.
• To ignite excitement about history, music and musical exploration.
• To inspire students to explore and express their own musical creativity.
Exploring the intergenerational, interracial and intergender
musical influence of Memphis in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation during the Civil Rights Movement, the
‘Take Me To The River’ film brings together multiple generations
of award-winning Memphis and Mississippi Delta musicians,
following them through the creative process of recording an
historic new album to re-imagine the utopia of racial, gender
and generational collaboration of Memphis in its heyday.

An outgrowth of the new ‘Take Me To The River’
Education Initiative created in partnership with Berklee
College of Music, the ‘Take Me To The River’ Living
History Program launched in February 2015 with a
presentation for the New York City Department of
Education. A special event launch and performance took
place at the World Famous Apollo Theater that same
month, focusing on a live performance with student
participation, a short of the film, plus the premiere of a
choral arrangement of “Wish I Had Answered.”

history to life for our Berklee City Music students in
terms that they not only understand but celebrate.

About Director/Producer Martin Shore
Martin Shore (R) with ‘Take Me To The

Award-winning filmmaker Martin Shore began his entertainment
career as a professional musician, touring with the likes of Bo
Diddley, Clarence Clemons, and many others. As a Grammy
nominated music and film producer, Mr. Shore has produced
major motion pictures and music for television series and
feature films. He is a voting member of the National Academy
of Recording Sciences (Grammy Awards) and the Producers
Guild of America. ‘Take Me to the River’ is his directorial debut
and has won awards for best film at SXSW, Raindance London,
and five others around the world.
