This frustrating 2015 Shining Stars Award The Eunice and John Bustillo Family The Rebecca and Anthony Iovino Family THE BUSTILLO FAMILY Eunice Bustillo had a stroke in November, 2003, just one month after her 40th birthday, and just a year after starting her own consulting business. She had lost her ability to speak, read, and write and her vision was affected. The strategies and skills she has acquired since joining our Center in 2005 have had an enormous impact on her ability to regain her quality of life. While attending the Center’s program, Eunice mastered the art of helping others while helping herself. Her entrepreneurial energy still intact, she has been a driving force and is the leading volunteer behind Something Special, the Center’s gift and jewelry store. Eunice, her husband, John, her son, John Dylan, and their family all actively support the Center. From volunteering to promoting the Center on television to John Dylan writing about his family experiences dealing with aphasia for school projects to generously donating to our programs and services, the Bustillo family thrives on actively serving and enhancing the local aphasia community’s needs. THE IOVINO FAMILY Rebecca Iovino’s stroke in 2006 at the age of 37 brought her busy life to a halt. A mother of two, Rebecca was an architect working with her husband, Anthony, at his firm. Her life revolved around family and her bustling career. Rebecca has rebuilt her communication skills and passionately pursued her creative talents at the same time, specifically with our Something Special program. She has excelled at creating unique jewelry designs, which she teaches to our members as a volunteer now. Her hand made glass beads and fine craftsmanship are the essence of the program’s “couture line,” creating one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces for our discerning customers. Anthony has served on the Center’s Board of Directors since 2012, offering invaluable insight to the Board as a caregiver. The family acted as chairs for one of our spring fundraisers and their children, Anthony and Joseph, were co-stars in our most recent video which debuted at our 10th Anniversary Gala. The Iovinos are shining examples of the generosity of heart and soul. condition affects a person’s ability to communicate, but does not affect his or her intellect.
