Where Innovation Comes Naturally
At Alltech, our mission is to improve the health and
performance of people, animals and plants through
advanced nutrition and scientific innovation.
Founded by Dr. Pearse Lyons in 1980, and
headquartered in Kentucky, USA, Alltech provides
natural, nutritional solutions to the food and feed
industries in North America, Europe, Africa, the
Middle East, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific
region with a business presence in 128 countries.
Our mission is supported by 3,500 employees.
Alltech’s global presence is also reflected in its
research and production, including three major
Bioscience Centers in the USA and Ireland, and
48 production facilities strategically located
throughout the world.
Alltech improves health and performance by adding
nutritional value naturally through its innovative
use of yeast fermentation, enzyme technology,
algae and nutrigenomics. Our pursuit of this
mission is guided by our founding ACE principle, our
promise that in doing business we have a positive
impact on the Animal, the Consumer and the
Environment.
Alltech is the only privately held company among
the top 10 animal health companies in the world.
This is a source of competitive advantage, allowing
us to stay focused on customer needs, innovation
and long-term objectives. The flexibility has
also fueled Alltech’s growth, which has been
approximately 20-25% annually. We are on target
to achieve $4 billion in the next few years.
Natural Solutions for an Evolving
Market
Alltech’s core business is animal nutrition, including
aquaculture, which generates 95 percent of sales.
We work with the largest feed manufacturers
in the world and provide them with nutritional
technologies that not only improve the bottom
line, but are natural and friendly to the Animal, the
Consumer and the Environment.
Our passionate commitment to scientific innovation,
particularly in the areas of algae, nutrigenomics
and yeast fermentation technology, has led to
the company’s expansion into three divisions:
Alltech Nutrition; Alltech Crop Science; and Alltech
Beverage, which includes a line of award-winning
beers and spirits such as Kentucky Bourbon Barrel
Ale® and Town Branch® Bourbon.
CORPORATE PROFILE
Fundamentals
New product development at Alltech is the result
of synergy between the company’s primacy in
science and its understanding of customers’ needs
and expectations. The Alltech brand rests on two
fundamentals: excellence in innovation and quality
assurance.
At Alltech, we foster innovation by nurturing talent
at all stages. Our commitment begins with inspiring
scientific and agricultural studies at the primary
school level through the construction of science
laboratories in schools. At the collegiate level,
the annual Alltech Young Scientist Award is the
largest global ag science competition and receives
more than 8,000 entries worldwide for its research
rewards. To date, more than 150 undergraduate
students have completed an internship program
at Alltech’s Center for Nutrigenomics and Applied
Animal Nutrition in Kentucky, and more than 260
Ph.D., master’s and graduate students have been
supported through Alltech’s bioscience centers. We
also have 19 formal research alliances with leading
universities and institutions around the world.
In terms of quality assurance, the Alltech Quality
System (AQS) is recognized throughout the feed
industry as a standard to follow. The AQS delivers
the exact same level of quality assurance and
traceability in each of Alltech’s geographical
markets, based on a uniform process designed
to meet and exceed other third-party systems of
certification.
Expansion and Investments
Alltech is rapidly expanding its global production
footprint in order to provide increasingly local
support to its customers. We now have 48
production facilities globally and are the largest
producer and processor of yeast in the world,
which includes the only selenium yeast to be FDAreviewed and first to be approved by the EU. We
are also the world’s largest producer of organic
trace minerals.
Several of Alltech’s facilities are unique to the
industry:
• Largest yeast production and processing
facility in the world for animal nutrition – São
Pedro, Brazil
• One of the two largest commercial algae
production facilities in the world and the
only one dedicated to animal nutrition –
Winchester, Kentucky, USA
• The largest commercial solid state enzyme
facility – Serdan, Mexico
• One of the largest facilities for producing
bacteria – Nicholasville, Kentucky, USA
• Fourteen coating facilities around the globe
capable of coating key raw materials and
components for the animal nutrition industry
Involvement
Recent developments have included:
•Beginning construction of an algae plant in
São Pedro, Brazil, where Alltech already
maintains the largest yeast production
facility in the world for animal nutrition. The
new algae plant represents a $63 million
investment, which will result in 200 direct
and indirect jobs and increase Alltech Brazil’s
production by 58 percent.
•Acquiring a new 7,300m² plant in Indaiatuba,
São Paulo State, Brazil. In the new facility,
we are manufacturing nutritional solutions
for beef and dairy cattle to support the
production capacity of Alltech’s nine
manufacturing plants in Latin America.
•Doubling the production of Optigen®, Alltech’s
non-protein nitrogen source for ruminants, in
Araucaria, Brazil.
•Installing a Bioplex® trace minerals production
plant, expanding Alltech’s production
capability in Bangalore, India.
•Installing new coating facilities in the United
Arab Emirates, Russia and Argentina.
In 2015, Alltech has plans for:
•Three new yeast processing facilities
in Mexico
• A new coating facility in Australia
•New processing facilities in Ontario, California,
USA; Klerken, Belgium; and Bangkok, Thailand
•Expansion in our Winchester, Kentucky, USA,
algae facility
Alltech believes in giving back to the communities
in which we work. With this in mind, we established
Alltech’s ACE Involvement Foundation, a charitable
foundation to help fund the philanthropic efforts of
the company, our employees and partners around
the world. One component of this commitment is the
Alltech Sustainable Haiti Project. Today the project
includes financial responsibility for two primary
schools in northern Haiti and the resurrection of a
Haitian gem - the country’s 100 percent mountaingrown, organic Arabica coffee. Alltech provides
a sales and marketing channel for these coffee
beans through its Fair Trade Certified™ Alltech
Café Citadelle, and profits from the coffee’s sale are
reinvested in the two Haitian primary schools the
company supports.

Bigger than Beef: More Efficient than Pork. Welcome to the
Midwest of America. Welcome to the Corn Belt: Home of
salmon, trout, tilapia, and water. Let’s be sustainable. Let’s
make aqua bigger than beef, more efficient than pork and
more efficient than poultry.
Seafood, Farmed Fish, and a Healthy Diet. I have lived with it all
my life. I have heard the arguments from the salmon producers of
Norway to the shrimp producers of Central America. There is an
alternative. Come find out. Yes, they are healthy. Rebel, and tell
the story.

Tilapia & Trout: The New Poultry? Stop, stop! What is next?
What happened to the catfish farmers of Mississippi? Why are
they in decline? Yet, imports are rising. This does not need to
be. Let’s make tilapia, trout, and catfish the new poultry, and
the new protein around the world.
Seaweed: The Forage of the Ocean. Ireland has a West Coast
of only 150 to 200 miles, but a seabed of many thousands of
square miles. The forage of the future could be seaweed. Long a
sustainable food and iodine source, it is now a virtual explosion of
possibilities.

Controlling Viral Invasions. Yet another virus. First, there was
Taura syndrome in Ecuador, then there was EMS everywhere.
Let’s call it by its name: Early Mortality Syndrome. A viral
infection, by any name, is something that can be overcome
with proper nutrition, the adoption of natural solutions, new
technology, and not old-fashioned ideas.
Replacing Fish Oil: The Holy Grail. Rebel, rebel, rebel. Rebel against
taking two pounds, three pounds or sometimes five pounds of fish
to make one pound of fish. Rebel against taking whole layers of
fish simply to grind them up into fish meal and fish oil. It not only
depletes the ocean, but destroys the ocean. There are solutions.
Let’s go back to the source. Let’s go back to algae as the source of
fish oil. Rebel now.
Dr. Mari Moren, Director of Research, Nofima AS, Norway
Salmon: Norway’s New Oil. Norway is a land of oil, or is it a
land of fish and salmon? It is a land where, with the right
REBELation, salmon exports and fish exports will exceed oil
exports. Why not have this in other countries such as Ireland,
Scotland and even the Midwest of America?

Minerals, Minerals, Minerals. Pounds and pounds per day

Never underestimate the quiet ones: the national and
global journey of a local sleepy phenomenon. What is
happening? What is it about craft brewers that make
them different? They want change, and for the most part,
they had a previous job that didn’t bring them the most
important aspect of life: contentment. They don’t wish
to be bought by somebody and therefore be back in the
same position. They are artisans; it’s a movement and one
that now has risen to a point where in some cities, such
as Portland, craft brewing dramatically outsells all of the
big boys.

What has the world learned from Ebola? Can we rebel from
the Ebola catastrophe? What is it that crops can do for us?
Could they be the source of a new color by replacing Red

give pay dirt an opportunity of a lifetime, but only in the lifetime of
those bacteria that we seem to be going out of our way to destroy.
Let’s rebel against it.

What is it exactly supermarkets are looking for? Are they bad
guys, or are they good guys? For 30 years, I have worked with
supermarkets. I have been on their boards, I have helped direct
their aqua divisions, I have helped them select their poultry
suppliers, and I have worked with poultry suppliers. At the end,
what supermarkets want is quite simple. The key words for them
are passion and fun, which at the end is what supermarkets want
to give to their customers. Richard Branson of Virgin Group said
that the secret of his success is that his team is passionate and
has a lot of fun. Dealing with supermarkets, you have to keep
that passion and fun front and center. It is a simple formula.

Bill Samuels, Jr. Chairman Emeritus, Maker’s Mark Distillery
While his father forever changed the bourbon industry with the introduction of Maker’s
Mark Bourbon in the early 1950s, Bill Samuels, Jr., was born into a family that had been
making whisky in the U.S. for six generations. In 1784, Robert Samuels mustered out of
George Washington’s Army, resettled in Kentucky with his father’s 60-gallon copper still
and began a tradition of distilling success. Bill, Jr., carried that torch as president and CEO of
Maker’s Mark for 35 years, and today that success continues under the guidance of his son,
Rob Samuels. Born in 1940 as the godson of Jim Beam, Bill, Jr., grew up on Distiller’s Row in
Bardstown, KY. His early education included a Ph.D. in salesmanship by driving Colonel Sanders
around Kentucky just as he was launching his chicken business. Later, he earned a degree in
engineering physics, helped design the Gemini and Polaris missiles and became friends with
the founding administrator of NASA. Then, it was on to law school and the White House (as
an intern) before joining the family business. Bill, Jr., assumed leadership of Maker’s Mark in
the mid-1970s and followed his father’s stern but simple piece of advice to not “screw up the
whisky.” Despite the labor-intensive, largely inefficient methods used to handcraft Maker’s
Mark, he stuck with every step in the process his father perfected, even as the brand – and
demand – grew exponentially over the years. Some of his contributions to the brand and the
bourbon industry include: the creation of the Maker’s Mark Ambassador program as a way to
build camaraderie among brand fans; the realization of his mother’s dream to turn Bourbon
Country (and in turn, the Maker’s Mark Distillery) into a major tourism destination; and the
introduction of the distillery’s first new expression of his father’s whisky, Maker’s 46. He has
chaired the board of more than 25 different non-profit organizations over the course of his
career. He has been recognized as Kentucky’s Entrepreneur of the Year on three occasions and
was named Louisville’s 2004 Citizen of the Year. Further, he was honored by Ernst & Young as
Kentucky’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement Entrepreneur, was inducted into the Kentucky Business
Hall of Fame in 2006, and was part of the inaugural class of the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame
in 2001.

Group, consisting of Azur Restaurant and Patio; Brasabana, featuring cuban cuisine; and Dupree
Catering. She also serves as co-host along with Chef Jeremy Ashby, executive chef and co-owner
of Azur Food Group, of Food News and Chews, a unique half-hour program about food and food
policy on Kentucky Education Television (KET). Their mission on the show is to assist the “bewildered” in their quest for
fresh and healthy food. The show provides information on how to understand the local food movement and prepare
flavorful and healthy foods, and both Lovely and Ashby are determined to deliver the “news” in an engaging format.
Most recently, she and Ashby have taken their popular show to a new one-hour format on WVLK 590 AM talk radio
airing on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. In addition, Lovely has an active consulting business with locally owned SteinGroup
and speaks throughout the country on issues related to food policy and crisis management. She is the author of two
books, “The Little Blue Book of Big Ideas -- New Cities in America” and “The Little Red Book of Everyday Heroes.” She is
currently at work on a memoir and guidebook on how to manage crises.

Vaun Cummins Senior Aquaculture Technician, Alltech
Vaun Cummins was born in Louisville, Kentucky where he spent a great deal of his childhood in the
woods, creeks and rivers developing curiosities about the natural world. He studied primatology
at the University of Kentucky and the University of California, Davis, earning his bachelor’s in
anthropology. He was employed by the California Regional Primate Research Center and The
University of California, Davis Anthropology Department before moving to Kenya, East Africa in
1999 to manage a research field site. He was first exposed to aquaculture while living in Kenya
where he worked in close proximity to several of the region’s trout farms. The opportunities to visit and work with
these farms inspired him to learn more about the field. His motivation was furthered when he worked in Honduras
and was exposed to the detrimental effects that non-regulated, subsistence capture techniques could have on a wild
fishery. Prior to obtaining his master’s degree in aquaculture and aquatic sciences at Kentucky State University, he
owned and operated an eco-tourism destination in La Moskitia, Honduras. His professional interests include fish/
crustacean nutrition, aquaponic systems and recreational fisheries management. His research has examined the use
of alternative protein and lipid sources in finfish and crustacean diets.
