TRAINING
AWLGRIP ENHANCES
TRAINING FACILITY
SCHEMES
With so many world class builders and applicators the yacht industry
is a fiercely competitive place to be. Those striving to stay ahead of
the game are investing in their personnel. A knowledgeable, capable,
trained workforce is the key to maximizing efficiency, quality and
output.
For over 35 years, Awlgrip has been recognized as the most dependable
paint available, supported with the finest technical expertise. How do we
achieve this? Awlgrip invests in continual internal training. All Technical Sales
Representatives, regardless of previous experience (of which all our TSR’s
have a great deal!) undergo regular sessions on a wide range of topics,
from learning about upcoming products to new application and inspection
methods.
In the Asia Pacific region, either 3 or 5 day internal training programs are
held at least once a year which are attended by both sales and customer
service personnel. As well as in depth training on Awlgrip products and
application techniques, the attendees receive the latest information on spray
guns, sanders, grinders, etc, which is presented to them by key suppliers
within the yacht industry. A typical program will also include updates on
health and safety, and tips on improving efficiencies within the paintshop,
all of which can be passed on to Awlgrip customers. The training sessions
are very hands on and in a recent session held earlier this year at the Gold
Coast in Australia, four powerboats ranging between 26 – 35 ft were
sanded, primed and topcoated.
Not only do we train our own team, as part of our outstanding technical
back up and support, we also provide training either on site or at our Yacht
Paint Application Centers. These dedicated Yacht Paint Application Centers
run training courses on Awlgrip products and systems, covering a wide
range of areas, such as achieving the finest finish through best practices
on preparation and application, health and safety guidance in all aspects
of application, and Personal Protective Equipment requirements. Awlgrip
also offer bespoke programs tailored to individual requirements.
The Awlgrip training courses are available for all professionals, such as
applicators, paint foremen, new project managers, specifiers and yards,
no matter what their role is within the industry. In instances when customers
require training for specific projects, Awlgrip experts also provide hands-on
technical training and support on-site at the customer’s premises.
Awlgrip currently has three Yacht Paint Application Centers, located in
Southampton, UK, Viareggio, Italy, and Cocoa Beach, Florida USA, and is
planning to open a Center on the East Coast of Australia, scheduled for the
latter part of 2010.
The most recent center to open is in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The
2500 sq ft (232 m2) training center includes state-of-the-art application
equipment and specially designed areas for theory and practical training,
with breakout area, classroom and large application booth.
The applicator and distributor sales training courses in Florida are
headed up by Technical Field Support Representative, Bob Lalonde,
who comments: “The 1-day course provides an overview of all the Awlgrip
products and gives participants the opportunity to find out more about
products that are particularly relevant to their operations and their own
procedures. We also give practical training to help optimize participants’
own processes and ultimately help them achieve superior finishes. We
provide instruction on surface preparation, coatings systems, equipment,
spray gun set-up and various other tips.”
Courses for 2011 can be arranged by contacting and
discussing your needs with your local Awlgrip
Technical Sales Representative.

AWLMIX
STATE-OF-THE-ART MIXING FOR
STATE-OF-THE-ART COATINGS
In 2004 Awlgrip introduced Awlmix, an advanced color mixing system that enabled Awlgrip and
key Awlgrip distributors to offer a color matching system for any Awlgrip or Awlcraft 2000
topcoat, including special requests for new colors.
Since then this service has brought numerous benefits to captains and crew globally ensuring that no
matter where in the world, paint matched to their exact needs is always available and fast. All Awlmix
colors are made to the same high quality and specification as any factory made product. Whether
matching your custom fabric or purple Bentley, Awlmix is the ideal choice when it comes to custom
colors for your yacht, no matter how large or small the job.
Dedicated New Modern Facility Opens in Newcastle
Awlgrip is pleased to announce that a new Awlmix color matching and production facility has recently
opened in Felling, Newcastle, UK. Featuring a state-of-the-art spray booth for application trials and
customer panel preparation, the new 2000 sq.ft (185 m2) building houses a dedicated mixing area,
prep area and separate office where color matching commences using the latest in spectrophotometers and color matching software.
As with all Awlmix facilities the new facility provides custom colors for Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000 product ranges as well as also being the center for the
recently launched Awlcraft SE range. Capable of providing custom colors from 1 quart to over 15 gallons the facility is home to three dedicated chemists, all
highly trained in the latest color matching techniques.
“
Here at SNAI we were one of the first Awlgrip distributors to utilize the Awlmix
System. We are now able to satisfy the increasing demand for special colors,
both in the Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000 Topcoat lines. We now make around 40
Awlmix formulations each month.
MARZIO DE CRISTOFANO, SNAI, ITALY
As the UK Awlgrip Distributor, we have been using the Awlmix system for nearly
two years and have greatly benefited from the added flexibility the system gives
us. Our customers now see a fast delivery of made-to-order colours and special
mixes, while the reduction in non-standard stock has enabled us to stock more
frequently used colours thus ensuring a better all round service to our
customers. This increased flexibility and special colour ability now means our
customers contact us for their total paint requirements.
ADRIAN LAYTON, MARINEWARE, UK
As an Awlmix distributor it gives us great pleasure to be able to provide our
customers with an exact match for a special color, especially when the request
is urgent – whether it be for a touch up or because an applicator requires a final
gallon of paint for a current project. Awlmix is something like a small paint
factory and sometimes a saviour.
MAHMUT GÜRSOY, MARINTEK A.S.,TURKEY
Since 2007 we have used the Awlmix system to make over 5000 lts of Awlgrip
and Awlcraft 2000 topcoat. The Awlmix system has eliminated the need to
stock all colors and allows us to meet our customer’s needs in the quickest time
possible. With the unique support from Awlgrip we are able to develop any
color. We believe our investment in Awlmix has helped us become the
strong and reliable partner we are known for in the yacht market.

SPONSORSHIP
Awlgrip are actively involved in the wider yachting community and support various events globally. Below are some examples of how Awlgrip
participates or sponsors industry associated events.
PINMAR GOLF
TOURNAMENT
The 2009 Pinmar Yachtsman’s Golf Tournament at the Son Quint Golf
Course in Mallorca, co-sponsored by Awlgrip, was once again
organized by Pinmar Yacht Painting Systems in aid of raising vital funds
for charity. Now in its 21st year, the event continues to receive an
overwhelming level of support from the superyacht industry and raised
over 37,000 Euros for nominated charities, which include Allan Graham
4 Kidz.
“
“
We have been a proud sponsor of the Pinmar Yachtsman’s
Golf Tournament for 15 years now. The industry involvement
year-on-year has been superb and it has proved itself to be a
great industry event that also benefits many deserving charities.
Michel van Dijck, European Sales Manager.
The 22nd Pinmar Yachtsman’s Golf Tournament will be held
from 21st – 23rd October 2010.
WBBA
THE WHISPER BOAT BUILDING ACADEMY
The Whisper Boat Building Academy (WBBA), founded by Peter Jacops, is
a Public Benefit Organization based in Cape Town, South Africa. South
Africa suffers from a large under privileged population where unemployment
is high and skilled boat builders are few and far between. People who are
handicapped particularly struggle within this economic environment.
The WBBA is primarily for deaf students with the aim of providing them
basic yacht building skills.
To date the WBBA has been financed by gifts from Dutch, Belgian and
South African organizations, as well as from the sales of the boats. Every
year the Southern African Awlgrip agent Kuba Miszewski of All Paints and
Products provides a yacht painting course, and the paint materials, to
students from the academy. Awlgrip is pleased to have the opportunity
to enhance the lives of many young South Africans whilst also contributing
to sustaining the skilled labor force needed by the yacht industry.
Within the North American market sportsfish
tournaments are popular and well attended events.
Awlgrip sponsors numerous events throughout the
sportsfish calendar. Below is a brief snapshot of some
of these events.
BERMUDA
BILLFISH BLAST
Bermuda Billfish Blast is a two day billfish event with ‘top
team honors’ going to the team that tallies the most points
during the tournament. Eligible species for the tournament
include blue marlin, white marlin, spearfish and sailfish.
Awlgrip was a proud Platinum sponsor of this event
which took place on 2nd – 5th July 2010.
PIRATES COVE
BIG GAME
TOURNAMENT
The annual Pirate’s Cove World Class Billfish Tournament
was held on 10th – 13th August 2010 in Manteo, North
Carolina. 69 boats and crew headed for the open seas in
the hope of catching the winning fish and the size figure
prize. The Pirates Cove Big Game Tournament works with
local charities to raise money for their causes.
This year was their 27th season and Awlgrip is proud
to have been a part of it.

JESSICA WATSON
SAILS INTO HISTORY
Aged just 17, Jessica Watson has become the youngest
person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the
World.
Jessica’s vessel, Ella’s Pink Lady is a 34 ft (10 m) Sparkman and
Stephens designed cutter originally built in 1984 by the Swarbrich
family in Western Australia.
The S&S 34 became famous after Jon Sanders, David Dicks and
Jesse Martin used them for their history making solo
circumnavigations.
Before heading to sea, Ella’s Pink Lady underwent a full refit to
ensure that she was in the best possible condition with specific
modifications and additions to ensure she was ready to cope
with the long and arduous journey to come.
The vessel was painted with Awlgrip Topcoat and as is evident
from the pictures and the name, Jessica’s color of choice was
‘Hot Pink’ – a color which Awlgrip was honored to supply.
As proud sponsors Awlgrip commends Jessica on her
success. The physical and mental challenges Jessica
conquered on this voyage are proof of a strength rarely
found in one so young. Congratulations Jessica!

NEW PRODUCT
AWLGRIP REVEALS NEW SPECIAL EFFECT TOPCOAT
– AWLCRAFT SE
Following the recent completion of an exciting product development
program, Awlgrip has introduced a range of special effect finishes to the
yacht market with the revolutionary Awlcraft SE – encompassing fast-drying
metallics, pearls and effect coatings with excellent opacity. Awlcraft SE was
recently launched in Europe and North America and will be introduced to the
Asia Pacific market soon.
Available in custom colors, Awlcraft SE is designed to work as one layer of a
multi-part system where the Awlcraft SE imparts the color and effect while the
clearcoat provides a clear high gloss finish and protection. This combination
forms a high performance, high gloss robust topcoat system.
The complete Awlcraft SE system is designed to be as simple as possible, from
the components involved through to the application. The Awlcraft SE comprises of
a simple two coat plus mist coat application, formulated to give an even finish with
minimum effort. Needing no specialist equipment or training, Awlcraft SE will give
a high quality finish time after time when applied using standard topcoat
equipment and techniques.
Awlcraft SE does not use any complex or new converters or reducers; Awlcat #2
(G3010) is the converter and the mix is reduced using the same range of topcoat
reducers as used in the current Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000 premium topcoats.
Awlcraft SE is then topcoated with the established Awlcraft 2000 High Gloss
Clear (F3029) and benefits from all the attributes associated, namely the high gloss,
robust nature of the product which is still repairable and buffable.
Since its recent launch, Awlcraft SE has already gained momentum and acclaim.
Keith Brooks at Lazzara Yachts raves about the new topcoat. The utilization of the F3029
Awlcraft 2000 Clear is very much a bonus in Keith’s opinion who went on to say...
For Lazzara yachts we always need an ‘A’ game.
Awlcraft SE helps us achieve that.

LOW VOC SYSTEM
The continual goal of Awlgrip is to always provide customers with the best while accommodating regulatory requirements without compromising
results. One of the current and most pressing regulatory requirements is the pressure to reduce VOC levels in all products from primers through
to topcoats.
Awlgrip is committed to continual product development including the development of new technologies, in order to provide long term solutions to the
VOC issue.
HIGH SOLIDS / LOW VOC
STEEL / ALUMINUM SYSTEM
TOPCOAT - AWLGRIP HS
345 HS PRIMER
HIGH BUILD
AWLFAIR LW
HIGH BUILD
MAX COR CF
SUBSTRATE STEEL / ALUMINUM
The adjacent diagram is a typical example of
a low VOC system. Alternative systems are
available and may not consist of as many
layers as the system illustrated.
In this example, the system starts with the
high solids, chromate-free, corrosion inhibiting
Max Cor CF primer. This provides an excellent
base for subsequent Awlgrip primers and has
a VOC of 378g/lt or 3.15lbs/gallon.
As with many Awlgrip specs, the foundation of
the system is the underlying layer of primers
and fillers. High Build is an excellent epoxy
sealer, suitable as a substrate primer and for
sealing epoxy filler, with a mixed VOC of only
335g/lt or 2.8lbs/gallon.*
* This VOC applies to North America only. In North America D3002 is
classed as a VOC exempt converter. In Europe the VOC is 361 g/lt or
3 lbs/gallon
Awlfair LW is the premium, epoxy trowelable fairing compound which is used
for fairing, levelling and smoothing surface imperfections. It boasts an easy to
mix formulation, with a smooth, creamy consistency, resulting in a tight screed
that requires less sanding.
Following completion of the priming layers, 345 HS, the high solids epoxy
undercoat, is applied prior to the application of Awlgrip HS topcoat. With
excellent coverage and high film build, 345 HS enables the coating system to
be applied in 1 – 2 coats, saving application time. The low VOC system is
completed using Awlgrip HS topcoat.
Awlgrip HS is a polyurethane topcoat which has been formulated on modern
resin technology to provide a low VOC, long-lasting finish. The lower solvent
content makes this product an ideal choice for applicators and builders
seeking products with reduced emissions.
Vitamin Sea Too
Awlgrip HS has an easy mix ratio, two coat application for most colors and of
course the exceptional durability that is expected from an Awlgrip finish.
Film levelling (or flow) is one of the challenges associated with any high solids
paint. The development of Awlgrip HS has pushed this attribute closer to that
of the premium Awlgrip finish than ever before.
Awlgrip HS comes with a choice of 3 different activators which allows the
applicator the freedom and flexibility to choose the ideal mix to achieve the
optimum finish.
Awlgrip HS is poised to become the ultimate High Solids Polyester Urethane
in the Yacht market.
