Dear Friends,
Only one week after returning home from the
Region 2 Rally, our Airstream was rolling again
on The Oregon Trail. Fortunately, it was an uneventful trip with very good weather and beautiful scenery all the way to Salem. On our arrival it
was sunny and delightfully cool. As I write this
message on June 26th it is 103 degrees, the hottest
June day on record, but we were able to run our
air conditioner. The forecast is for a cool down in
the middle of the week.
Barry and Lesley Heckenswiler sent a lovely
letter to our Unit thanking all who helped with
the breakfast at the recent Region 2 Rally.
Have a wonderful summer, and Ray and I
look forward to seeing all of you at our Adirondack Mountains Rally.

Leaving the Rally we will head north to an
Airstream park in Lacey, Washington, for the
Region 10 Rally, from there we will be on a 2-1/2
week caravan touring Washington and returning
to Lacey for the Potlatch & Salmon Rally. Then
our final destination is our Metro NY Unit Adirondack Adventure II Rally hosted by Herb and
Barbara, as we return to the place they call Paradise.
At our Unit’s Riverhead Rally the Metro
Members approved the Unit’s Constitution which
must be updated every five years. It was then
sent to the WBCCI Constitution Committee and
happily it was approved.

after which we caravanned again to
Scranton, for the Lackawanna Coal Mine
Tour given by a retired miner. We
learned about the unbelievable hardships
endured by the men and their families,
including the children who were sent to
work at a young age. The meager payment they received was so important for
the family'
s livelihood, that education
took secondary place to an opportunity

The success of the Steamtown Festival Rally in Pennsylvania was the result
of a lot of research, planning and coordinating by our untiring President, Barbara
Landman. From the trip 300 feet below
to explore a coal mine, to the beauty of
the Radisson Hotel lobby, we were
treated to an educational, fun-filled
weekend with Metro friends old and
new. The Rally began on Friday with a
social hour in the rec. hall, and in the
evening, we were treated to a slide show
given by Hunt Jones depicting “Trailer
Travel Through the Years.”
Saturday morning, we caravanned to
the Radisson Hotel in Scranton. It’s
lobby is actually the completely restored
original Lackawanna Train Station. Our
hotel tour given by a National Park
Ranger was followed by a delicious buffet lunch there in the Hotel.
Next stop was Steamtown National
Park, where we boarded a train for a
brief trip, and then back at the station we
observed a locomotive on the turntable
entering and leaving: Quite an engineering accomplishment. Heading back,
some of our party stopped at Pappa’s for
yummy take-out pizza. The evening'
s
hospitality featured Barbara'
s cheesecake
with strawberries and whipped cream, as
well as other bakery treats.
Saturday morning, Barbara was off to
the local bakery for bagels, which she
supplemented with every conceivable

Steamtown Rally Summary, continued:

we were given a guided tour of the
Anthracite Heritage Museum, where
we learned more about the history of
mining in the Area, which is known
as the Anthracite Capital of the
World. A scrumptious dinner at
Charlie Brown'
s Steakhouse followed, and on our return to the
campground, the traditional campfire ensued.
Sunday morning'
s breakfast consisted of more bagels and goodies. Margaret Russell baked wonderful breads to share as we said our
goodbyes. This was a great Rally

Region 2 … by Margaret Russell
Barry and Leslie Heckenswiler presented a grand Region 2 Rally held
at the South Mountain Fairgrounds
in the heart of apple country, with
orchards abounding on the gently
rolling hills near Gettysburg, PA.
Metro attendees included Robert &
Doris Hoffman, Ray & Barbara
Landman, John & Irene Nordin,
Don & Margaret Russell and Jim
Zigrosser.
All activities and meals were held in
the well appointed main exhibit
building. The continental breakfasts
each morning were bountiful with a
large menu as was the catered din-
ner. Each evening following the entertainment ice cream sandwiches,
popsicles, and cookies were served.
Entertainment included two jugglers
one night, and to add to the Civil War
theme, an impersonation of Abe Lincoln which was very well presented,
and a Civil War era sing-a-long titled
"O'Be JoyFull". All programs of
entertainment were enjoyable.

Gettysburg Battlefield, Penn State
Fruit Research and Extension Center,
Eisenhower Farm and Home, Boyd'

Bears Store, Apple Museum, The
General Store with items from bygone days and a visit to the Round

Rustic? Compared to what? One
visitor to our peninsula said we were very

freckles. The Patio sports a carpet and
many chairs for company, plus a

All in all, we had more than ten days of
pleasant interaction, interesting sightseeing, good meals and made more memories. It was well worth it and our thanks go

If folks would like to bring a boat there is a launch there, or craft can be rented nearby.
Facilities: All will have Hookups but it is not a fancy place, so plan on being very comfortable with great scenery but without miniature golf, bath houses or laundry. The weather is always cooler in the mountains, so bring
warm stuff. The voltage is usually too low for air conditioning, but we have never needed it.
Pets: Well behaved pets welcome on leash
Parking: Register at office behind ‘Trading Post’ before driving to campsites.
Directions: Adirondack Northway I-87 to Exit 23, take rt-9 north thru Warrensburg. Just past town go left on rt-28, thru Indian
Lake, and north on rt-30. Bear right on 30 at Blue Mt. Lake. Follow 30 all thru Long Lake and Tupper Lake. Past Tupper Lake
village a few miles go left on 30, (NOT on rt-3 to Saranac) ----sign will be toward the Airport. 5 more miles on rt-30, then see
‘Trading Post’ on your right. Then, directions to our part of Heaven. Facing the ‘Trading Post,’ go as far left as possible in the lot
toward the water, then turn right on the wide dirt road for exactly 1-1/2 miles. After the huge rock on your left and down the hill you
reach the beach campground and your campsite. To find our trailer, go straight thru the camp to the far trees on your left, see small

Not a task for the easily discouraged. What started as a minor
‘floor-patch’ project, ended up as a complete floor replacement,
which then required removal of the entire body shell from the
frame and removal of the underside floor pan. Floor and lower
panel damage resulted also from a neglected broken rear window
(still taped in photo). While fully disassembled, the frame was
cleaned and refinished and needed only one outrigger replaced.
Not bad for a 50 year old trailer frame. The body shell, floor pan,
frame and the trailer’s new floor are now all reassembled with a lot

The big decision, with an endless amount of restoration still remaining: To
restore the inside more like the original, or to some custom floor plan, or give
up. Raising a family now, and the trailer garaged away from the home, makes
the task an almost impossible challenge, today.
The 1956 Airstream looks like it could be, or was, fabricated entirely with
hand tools and on the top of any work bench. Note in photo to left, the simple
electrical system has a row of six screw-type fuse sockets, and the interior
paint finish is also still good.
Certainly an eye opener to the writer, as to the mountain of work involved

An autumn jaunt into New England to see the Fall Foliage, visit the Fryeburg Fair and possibly crack some lobster along the coast.
