FROM THE
ADMINISTRATOR
As I am writing this
article for the Silver Linings, the harvest is wrapping up, the trees are shedding their leaves, the days
are getting colder and soon
winter will be here. Where
did the year go?? We have
been busy here at Luther
Memorial Home with many
projects. Of special note
was the repair of our three
entrances. The foundation
had settled over the years
and the gaps were becoming dangerous. Now residents in walkers and wheelchairs roll smoothly over
the pavement. The new
carpeting in our lobby, B, C
and D-wing give our facility a nice facelift. We will
be starting work on our
chapel and then this winter
we hope to finish Sun Center South. It seems like we
never run out of projects
here at LMH.
Over the summer the
North Dakota Health Dept.
conducted their annual survey for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
They spent almost a week
inspecting, charting, and
asking questions of both
staff and residents. Luther
Memorial received two minor deficiencies that were
easily corrected. I’m proud
to say that Luther Memorial
Home received a 5 star rat-
ing – the highest rating given. This rating is based on
the overall performance in
health inspections, nursing
staff and quality of medical
care. I sincerely congratulate the entire staff for their
fine effort and wonderful
compassionate care. They
are the backbone of this
facility.
Also this summer the
residents enjoyed the expansion to our patio/
courtyard area. The new
glider swing purchased by
our Auxiliary was a welcome addition. It allows
residents that are wheelchair bound to roll easily
onto the platform and swing
gently back and forth. A
big thank you to the Auxiliary for this wonderful purchase.
Did you know that Luther Memorial Home is one
of the largest employers
in Traill County? It is a
great place to work where
everyone (staff & residents)
are considered “family”.
We have opportunities for
everyone from high school
and college students to older people looking for extra
income. Stop by the receptionist desk and pick up an
application – you will not
be sorry. We’d love to have
you as part of our team.
Two new employees who
- Brett R. Ulrich
joined our staff this summer
include Heather Satrom
who was hired as a Office
Specialist. She will handle
billing and be able to answer your questions regarding Medicare. Our other
new employee is Ashton
Sundeen who is our Scheduling Coordinator – she is
in charge of the work
schedules for all the CNAs
and
transport
aides.
Heather and Ashton have
already been in their new
positions a few months and
are doing great.
I would like to mention
with deep gratitude a gift
that Luther Memorial Home
received this spring from
Anna Getz. Anna was a
former community member
and business owner. She
and her husband operated
the Gambles store in
Mayville for 31 years. Anna passed away on February
24, 2015 and upon her passing Luther Memorial Home
was notified that Anna had
designated us as beneficiary
in her life insurance policy.

In May of this year we received a check in the
amount of $52,661.31.
What a magnificent gift
from an outstanding lady.
Words cannot adequately
express our appreciation.
As we close out 2015,
I would like to take this
opportunity to wish everyone a very joyous holiday

3 LMH STAFF EARN THEIR
MEDICATION ASSISTANT II LICENSE
Luther Memorial Home recently had three CNA’s become licensed as Medication Assistant II’s in North Dakota. The three were Hannah Ellegaard, Courtney Savage
and Heather Wilson. The class was taught by Julie Hanson, RN, Director of Nursing.
The students took a 48 hour classroom instruction directed by Hanson. After successfully completing the class
they moved on to a 32 hour clinical component at Luther
Memorial Home.
Some of the items included in the training program
were legal requirements concerning drug and drug administration, general medication information, use of drug references,
body system overview, drug classification and practical medication administration procedures.
Luther Memorial Home currently employs six medication
assistants. Please congratulate the
three new medication assistants!

CHAPLAIN
Thanksgiving will be
here in a few weeks. In the
busy time of harvest, football season, planning winter
holidays, and for some of us
dreading those short days of
sunshine with long cold
nights. While I was growing up, we always went to
grandma’s house. We did
not have to go over a river
or through the woods to get
there. However, the journey
was something that we
looked forward to.
We
looked forward to it because
we knew that in the end, we
would be with family, good

Holiday Meals
Dear Families:
You are welcome to
share a holiday meal with
your loved one. There is a
limit of 4 guests per resident.
The cost will be $10.00 for
holiday meals (Thanksgiving
Day dinner, Christmas Eve
supper, Christmas Day dinner, and New Year’s Day
dinner).
If you do intend to eat
with your loved one on these
special days, we request a
two day notice to ensure
adequate food is prepared.
Also, meals per guest
are: Breakfast - $4.50; Dinner - $5.50; and Supper $4.50. Thank You.

I did not realize how
great it was until that first
holiday in which grandma
was gone. She had died and
now there was no destination, there was no gathering
with her, and it was just
not the same. We do not
realize how great something
is within our life until it is
gone! However, with the
changing of traditions, we
find new traditions. We
treasure the old traditions
but we also make new ones
together as a family.
Christmas offers us a time
to reflect and realize, God
is doing something new in
the world. We bear witness
to it, we join with it, and we
are a part of it!
Throughout this holiday
season of Thanksgiving
and Christmas, I hope you
are able to enjoy it in the
company of family, friends,
and a community that
gathers in love. Love is one for the seasons that we
of the greatest gifts and share with all whom God

DIRECTOR OF ACTIVITIES
You are never too old
to care…. Recently during a
visit with a new resident she
commented that LMH is
like one big family. What a
wonderful statement. She is
not the first resident to say
this. I am proud to work at
such a caring facility. As
with all nursing homes, residents come and go. Some
get better and are able to go
home and for others we
have the privilege to care
for them during their end of
life journey. Each resident

that each day is a gift, no
one is promised tomorrow.
How can I make a difference you may ask? It might
be a simple act of a welcoming smile to a new resident, visiting, holding a
hand, offering a prayer, or
inviting them to an activity.
Mother Nature sure has
been good to us this year
and many of the residents
have enjoyed spending time
outside. A drawing was
held to see who would be
the first residents to ride
on the Whisper Glider
Swing and the winners
were Carl and Kaye
Kvislen. Thank you to
LMH Auxiliary for purchasing the glider.
LMH Auxiliary held
its Fall Festival in September with a Dessert
Bar and Ice Cream Social. The Old Tyme
Kings entertained a
large crowd. The lucky
quilt winner was Arlys Balstad. The $50 gas card winners were Kathy Gangelhoff
and Sheryl Vinje. Congratulations ladies!
Delightful, energetic,
cheerful and friendly are
just a few words we could
use to describe this year’s
3rd graders from PBJ elementary. The students will
be making a monthly visit
with our residents during
the school year. During the
tour on our first visit one
student commented, this is
like a town with a roof. We
sure do look forward to
their visits!
Looking ahead we will
be recognizing LMH residents and staff who served
in the armed forces at our
Veterans Program planned
for Nov 11 at 2pm in the
LMH dining room. If you
see someone in uniform or
know someone who served,
please thank them for their
service and sacrifice to our

corner, please take time to
remember your family and
friends with a phone call, email, a letter, pictures, or
just stop by for a cup of coffee and share some conversations, stories and enjoy

that fleece items do not tolerate the heat in the dryers
well and the garments become scratchy, so for your
loved one’s comfort it is

fabric.
A reminder regarding holiday decorations:
1. NO live or real Christmas trees or wreaths are
allowed anywhere in the
facility. Artificial trees and
wreaths may be permitted if
they are UL listed for flame
retardency.
2. For residents residing
in Meadowlark Lane we ask
that family not bring live
poinsettias or any other
plants/flowers as many can
be harmful if ingested.
3. No extension cords or
power strips are allowed.

LMH W ELCOMES N EW S TAFF
Good afternoon! My name is Ashton Sundeen. I am originally from Bismarck, ND. My family
moved to Mayville in 2000 when I was 13 years old. I graduated from May-Port CG High School,
studied at Mayville State University for two years, and now, currently a student at Northland
Community and Technical College where I am pursuing a nursing degree.
I have two children and in 2011, I married Aaron Sundeen in Las Vegas, NV. We love traveling during summer; and this year we spent a few days in Wisconsin Dells.
I worked at LMH as a CNA during high school. After living in Fargo, ND for a time, I returned to Mayville and started working at LMH in December 2014. I enjoy spending time with
the residents and hearing about their lives and families. In July, I accepted the role of Scheduling Coordinator and look
forward to my future with LMH.
Hello! I am Heather (Dakken) Satrom. I was born, raised and currently live in Mayville, ND.
My parents are Larry (Sharon) Dakken and Debbie (Andy) Heitkamp. I am married to Matthew
Satrom and have five beautiful girls: Alicia, Caitlyn, Harley, Evie and Veronica.
I have an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Mayville State (’99) and Associate’s Degree in Radiology Technology from Northland Community and Technology College (’10),
East Grand Forks, MN.
This is sort of a coming home for me since I first started working for LMH 19 years ago as an
evening Receptionist for several years before moving on to pursue other interests. It is a family
affair working for LMH, as my step-mom Sharon Dakken was Housekeeping/Laundry Supervisor for many years, my
daughter Caitlyn Gibson works as a TA in the evenings, and now me. I started in August working in Medicare Billing,
Receptionist and Medical Records. It is great to be back working for LMH, as I see some familiar faces and names, and I
am getting to know the new employees and residents. I love spending time with my family, going to the lake, bowling,
and just hanging out.
