WELCOME TO WILDLY GORGE-OUS
HOOD RIVER COUNTY
With Mt. Hood looming in the distance and the mighty Columbia River at its doorstep,
Hood River County offers a world of year-round outdoor recreation, dramatic vistas,
historic landmarks, fantastic food and warm, friendly people.
Located in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Hood River County
offers an expansive variety of suitable terrain no matter what your sport or speed. Mt. Hood’s
miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, acres of farm and forestland, and miles of vertical
ski runs attract mountain fans, while the Columbia River’s consistent summer winds attract
windsurfers, kiteboarders, stand up paddle boarders (SUP) and even paragliders. Best of all,
you can enjoy a bluebird day skiing groomers and get up the next morning for a sunrise
SUP on the Columbia.
Over the last decade, Hood River has become world renowned for its wide selection of
craft breweries, hard-pressed cideries, shopping, award-winning wineries and restaurants,
where you’ll find everything from wild salmon to seasonal greens grown by nearby farmers.
While you’re here, take a yoga class, get a massage, see a movie, make a piece of art, explore
our local parks and trails, or go shopping.
Whether you’re a regular at our local brewpubs, or you’re planning your first escape to
Hood River, we’ve got all the bases covered for your next wildly gorge-ous vacation. You
might be tempted to stay just for a weekend; but there’s so much to see and do, we think
you’ll want to stay for a week.

A SCENIC WONDERLAND
OF NATURAL BEAUTY
In 1986 the Columbia River Gorge became the nation’s first National Scenic
area, and today it remains the country’s largest. In the heart of the region, where
the shimmering Columbia cuts through the Douglas fir covered Cascade Range,
Hood River has grown into the cultural, economic, historic, and recreational
epicenter of the Gorge, but none of those things compares to the sheer scenic
wonderland that is Hood River County. Mt. Hood, Oregon’s highest point, keeps
a constant vigil over the fruit tree filled Hood River valley, the dry wildflower
laden eastern hills, and the rippling whitewater that pours from its shoulders
toward the Columbia. The communities that make up Hood River County are
bonded by more than proximity—they are proud inhabitants of one the world’s
most beautiful spots. You will eventually leave Hood River, but once you have
visited, this county will always be with you.

HOME TO OREGON’S TALLEST
MOUNTAIN & MIGHTIEST RIVER
Nowhere else in Oregon can you so easily experience the
water and mountains in one destination.
Carving a deep, expansive gorge along the Oregon-Washington border, the
Columbia River is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Range.
Today, the vast majority of the millions of visitors who come to the Gorge each
year focus on stopping at some of the area’s 50+ waterfalls. Highlights include
easy-to-access Wahclella Falls, Oneonta Falls and Multnomah Falls, which at
620 feet tall, is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States.
Built between 1913 and 1922, the Historic Columbia River Highway provides
access to most waterfall hikes on the Oregon side of the Gorge, numerous scenic
overlooks and many peaceful picnic areas. The historic highway is also popular
among cyclists, who love the hills, curves and slow-moving traffic of this scenic
and challenging route.
Did you know?
Winding 1,243 miles from
the Canadian Rockies to the
Pacific Ocean, the Columbia
River dumps more water
into the Pacific Ocean than
any other river in North or
South America.
For a special treat, buy a ticket for the Mt. Hood Scenic Railroad, which was built
in 1905 to extend freight service 21 miles south to Parkdale, making the orchards
more accessible for export. Depending on the time of year, the Mt. Hood Railroad
provides a unique view of blossoming orchards, snow-capped peaks and fall
foliage during a four-hour round-trip excursion to Parkdale.

Mt. Hood, once referred to as Wy’east by the Multnomah tribe, is Oregon’s tallest
(elev. 11,249 feet) and most famous snow-capped iconic peak. In the mid-1800s, the
Mt. Hood Road provided an alternative to the dangerous Columbia River route that
required early pioneers on the Oregon Trail to put their wagons on rafts. Today, the
Mt. Hood Scenic Byway travels through orchards, farms and vineyards. In one day,
you can sample the region’s wide variety of wines, taste fresh hard-pressed cider,
pick a bouquet of lavender, meet a family of alpacas, hike through fields of lupine
and take a scenic chairlift ride.

Blossom Time
Starting in early April, the
cherry, apple and pear trees in
the Hood River valley welcome
spring’s return by releasing
vibrant pink and white flowers.
They start in the lower
elevations and, like a domino
effect, move up the valley
creating a patchwork of color.
Visit Hood River throughout
the month of April and enjoy
family-friendly farm events,
craft shows, culinary treats and
the Hood River County HardPressed Cider Fest.

Abundant, glacier-fed water and fertile volcanic soils attracted hundreds of
people to set roots in the Hood River valley in the mid-1800s. Hood River County
boasts 14,000 acres of commercial pear, apple, cherry and peach orchards.
More than 30 orchards, farms and wineries are scattered throughout Hood River
County, many of which open their doors to the public during much of the year.
From the annual Hood River Lavender Daze Festival (July) to the Heirloom
Apple Celebration (October) to u-cut tree farms (December), countless events
throughout the year bring people together to celebrate the harvest and the
growers who have made the Hood River valley one of the most prolific fruitproducing regions in the world.

so many food-related businesses call Hood River home. From the cherry, apple

in the summer, Hood River County has a deep-seeded love for—and dependence
on—nature’s bounty. Take a drive along the Hood River County Fruit Loop and
stop at farms and roadside stands to sample peaches, cherries, strawberries,
blueberries, apples and pears. Spend a morning at a u-pick farm so that you can
enjoy the fruits of your labor all winter long. Pick a bouquet of lavender, dahlias

fly-fishing, running and rock climbing; or golfing, sailing and cycling, there are
few other places with so much to do in such close proximity. Regardless of the

sale by) regional artists (art-of-community.com). Then, make your way to downtown
Hood River, where artwork by local artists hangs on the walls of many restaurants
and retailers. Stop in the Columbia Center for the Arts, home to a community
theater group and a gallery that features more than 125 local artists with monthlong special exhibits (215 Cascade Avenue). You’ll have to hop on a bicycle or into
the car to reach Western Antique Aeroplane and Automotive Museum (WAAAM).
Here, you can peek inside hundreds of working antique airplanes, automobiles
and military jeeps. Discover the unexpected at Maryhill Museum of Art near
Goldendale, Washington. Founded by legendary businessman, Sam Hill, Maryhill
boasts a world-class collection of art and rotating exhibits.

HERITAGE & HISTORY.
From notable landmarks such as the
Barlow Road, which took pioneers along the Oregon Trail up and over Mt. Hood
to the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, which is being restored mile by
mile, you don’t have to travel far within Hood River County to feel like you’ve
stepped back in time. Learn more about the cultural and natural history of the
Gorge. Consider taking a ride on the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler, an authentic
triple-deck paddle wheeler, or on the historical Mt. Hood Scenic Railroad.
Meander the streets of Hood River’s historic downtown, which includes numerous
buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. And, if you’re really curious,
check out the Historic Hood River photo blog, which includes hundreds of photos
and commentary from locals (historichoodriver.com). Learn about Native American
history, the early pioneers of the Columbia River Gorge, and the natural history of
this area by taking a drive to the Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center and
Museum or the Hutson Museum.

The Historic Columbia River
Highway spans more than 80
miles between Troutdale and
The Dalles. The first planned
scenic roadway in the United
States, it was a technical and
civic achievement of its time.
Today, it’s on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Whether driving the highway
to access waterfalls, biking it to
reach communities, or hiking
sections closed to traffic, there
are numerous ways to enjoy
this historic gem of the Pacific
Northwest.

The Missoula Floods
Local Pick
During the great Missoula Floods, which swept
periodically across eastern Washington and
down the Columbia River Gorge at the end of
the last ice age, the waters near Hood River
reached 1,000 feet, creating a deep, expansive
gorge all the way to Crown Point.
Completed in 1935, Georgiana
Smith Park is a gorgeous public
green space adjacent to the
Hood River Library. The library
was completed in 1914 with a

SEVEN WILDLY GORGE-OUS VACATION IDEAS
Drive the Hood River County Fruit Loop. This 35-mile scenic drive
through the valley’s orchards, forests, farmlands and friendly communities is one of the
area’s top attractions. Throughout the year, you’ll find fruit, wines, lavender, alpacas,
farm stands, family activities and more.
Hood River County Chamber of Commerce
Tour the Waterfalls. The geology of the Columbia River Gorge lends itself
to some of the most spectacular waterfalls anywhere. Starting with the towering
620-foot Multnomah Falls, visitors can stop at waterfalls all along the Historic
Columbia Gorge Highway, or choose to hike in for a closer look.
Jesse Larvick

Soak up Art and Culture. Hood River is home to many talented artists,
actors, writers and musicians. Spend time at a local gallery or art museum. Catch a live
concert—many of which are outdoors during the summer time. Enjoy a live theater
production or writing workshop. Try your hand at glassblowing or painting—or simply
support our local artists by attending open studio tours and craft shows.

Take a Culinary Odyssey. Tour one of our many wineries and vineyards, or
attend a wine maker’s dinner at a local restaurant. Take a brewery tour or stop at a local
cider house. Visit one of many local coffee roasters or food carts. Enjoy a home-cooked
breakfast at a local diner, or opt for a gourmet meal at one of many fine dining options
in town. Numerous culinary surprises await in Hood River County.

Make a Splash. Hood River put itself on the world windsurfing map in the
Zach Dischner
1980s and continues to lure wind and water sports enthusiasts from all over the world.
Local instructors know the weather and wind patterns and can provide a comfortable
setting for you to launch into a new water sport. Take the family to Hood River
Waterfront Park, where from the swimming beach you can watch windsurfers and
kiteboarders criss-crossing the river.
Do Your Holiday Shopping. It’s never too early to begin your holiday
shopping, and Hood River’s shops are a great place to start. Our main street
offers an eclectic mix of locally owned specialty stores where you can find jewelry,
clothing, toys, books, stationary, locally made products, outdoor gear and more.
Plus, gift certificates to local restaurants, galleries and stores are a great way to lure
your loved ones back to Hood River County.
