The SHOFAR SEPTEMBER 2014 Volume 90 No. 11 ELUL/TISHREI 5774/5775 Temple Beth-El The Temple Beth-El Shofar is dedicated by the Chase Family Foundation. Congregation Sons of Israel & David ENTERING THE HOLINESS OF THE NEW YEAR FOR EVERYTHING THERE IS A SEASON, AND A PURPOSE UNDER HEAVEN. A TIME TO BE BORN, AND A TIME TO DIE. (Ecclesiastes, Chapter 3) We did not choose to be born, but we must choose our way of life. We cannot hope to avoid death, but we can invest a part of ourselves in the things that never die and these live beyond our mortal span. A TIME TO PLANT, AND A TIME TO HARVEST WHAT HAS BEEN PLANTED. We harvest what others have planted before us. May we so plant that the nourishing fruit of our labors will be harvested by those who come after us. A TIME TO KILL, AND A TIME TO HEAL. Now is the time to dedicate ourselves to destroy the evil within us and around us: now is the time to resolve the hurts and wounds of those who have been bruised ~ some of them by us. A TIME TO BREAK DOWN, AND A TIME TO BUILD UP. This is the time to break down walls of estrangement that separate. This is the time to build up the walls of caring that draw us close to one another. A TIME TO WEEP, A TIME TO LAUGH. Let us weep for the days we have wasted, for thanks we did not offer, for the gifts we did not use, for the goods we left undone. Let us laugh with the hope that we will do better in the year we are about to begin. A TIME TO MOURN, AND A TIME TO DANCE. At this time we mourn with all who in the year gone by have suffered the death of loved ones, the loss of dignity, the shrinking of self esteem. We dance with joy for those who have been blessed with good fortune, who have enlarged their sympathies, widened their compassion. A TIME TO CAST AWAY STONES, AND A TIME TO GATHER STONES TOGETHER. Now is the time to cast away the heavy rocks of remorse and regret that lie on our hearts, the rubble of blasted dreams and collapsed hopes. Then let us gather the scattered stones and build with them a temple of vision renewed and spirit refreshed as we journey confidently towards the beckoning future. A TIME TO SEEK, AND A TIME TO LOSE. It is always time to seek the good in each other and for each other. This season is the best time to lose the pettiness and callousness that diminish our stature and contract our horizons. A TIME TO KEEP SILENCE, AND A TIME TO SPEAK. The time to keep silence is when we are tempted to speak words that bruise and berate. The time to speak out is when truth needs a champion and justice a voice. A TIME TO LOVE, AND A TIME TO HATE. The time for love is always, for to love is to expand life to its fullest dimensions. Let us remember to hate malice and bigotry, meanness and selfishness. A TIME FOR WAR, AND A TIME FOR PEACE. Now is the time to make war against our stubbornness which keeps us from repenting and abandoning our sins. Now is the time to do T’shuvah, so that we may know the true blessing of inner serenity and peace. Rosh Hodesh Elul is Tuesday, August 26th. Look for the new moon on Monday, August 25th. Seeing the new moon o Elul is an exciting event because it is a very real way for us to begin anticipating the start of the new year. As the moon waxes, becomes full and then wanes we can count down the days to the end of the year in anticipation of the renewal that awaits us at the next new moon, on Rosh Hashanah! The High Holy Holidays We are inaugurating the Jewish New Year 5775 which is a palindrome, a number which is the same whether read from right to left or left to right. Biblically speaking, the Holiday of Rosh Hashanah is just one day: the first day of the seventh month (Tishrei). However, biblically speaking, the first day of the month is to be determined by the Rabbinical court in Jerusalem (not by the calendar). In ideal times, when the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, the day when the new month started was determined by witnesses who saw the new moon. A month in the Jewish (lunar) calendar contains 29 or 30 days. If witnesses arrived on the 30th day of the month and testified that they had seen the new moon, that day became the1st day of the next month and the previous month ended up with only 29 days. If no witnesses arrived on that day, then automatically the previous month had 30 days and the next month would start on the 31st day. As stated above, Rosh Hashanah is the 1st day of the month of Tishrei. So when the 30th day of Elul (the month before Tishrei) arrived, no one could know whether this day would end up being the 1st day of Tishrei (Rosh Hashanah) or the 30th day of Elul; it depended on whether witnesses would arrive that day. This caused problems with the daily prayers, sacrifices, etc. So our sages instituted that we observe two days of Rosh Hashanah on the 30th and 31st day. In Temple times this could end up being either the 30th day of Elul and the 1st day of Tishrei, or the 1st and 2nd day of Tishrei (as Rosh Hashanah always is today). For this reason, Rosh Hashanah is observed two days, even in the Land of Israel ~ as opposed to all other holidays which are only one day in Israel. Here at Temple Beth-El, like a growing number of Reform congregations in North America, we will renew the observation of the Second Day of Rosh Hashanah on Friday, September 26, 2014, at 10:30 AM. The joint clergy and lay-led service will be followed by blessings over wine and challah and a dairy lunch. Mark your calendars and plan to attend. Tickets are not required and feel free to invite your friends, members and non-members, to join in the celebration. L'Shana Tova, Jill 15 81st High School Graduation EXCERPTS OF THEIR REFLECTIONS This past spring, we had the wonderful honor of celebrating the 81st High School Graduation of Temple Beth -El. Twelve remarkable young people (Nathaniel Bresnick, Matthew DeQuattro, Ellis Einhorn, Michael Fradin, Jeffrey Golditch, Benjamin Licht, Ilan Rich, Jacob Rosenberg, Jacob Sivik, Benjamin Tauber, Elizabeth Weiner, and Jacob Yopak) led us in worship and were recognized for their dedication to their Jewish education. Five members of the graduating class shared their thoughts of their time at Temple Beth-El; we are pleased to share excerpts of their reflections…” NATHANIEL BRESNICK As Judaism encourages us to spend a good deal of time asking questions. So, I hope you'll bear with me when I ask one that's been on my mind a lot lately. In the strange and exciting purgatory of senior spring, when the future is wonderfully close while so much of the familiar past comes to an end, I've been asking, why am I here? I mostly don't mean this in the existential sense, though Judaism can certainly provide an interesting avenue for exploring that question, too. No, I mean, literally, why am I here, at my Temple graduation, right now. The past few years we've all often been asked why we stayed at Temple after Bar Mitzvah and Confirmation, and there's certainly an easy answer to that, the one the Temple would put in its brochures, if it had brochures. And that is, to figure out our Jewish identities. To understand how we reconcile the fact of our Jewishness, whatever that means, with the rest of our lives during the 166 hours a week we aren't in Temple. And while my time here has absolutely helped me do that, I can't say there was ever a moment when I sat down and said “I'm going to keep waking up way too early every Sunday morning so that I can figure out my Jewish identity.” No, in all honesty, I can't tell you exactly why I stayed, but I recently realized just how glad I am that I did. Because just last week, in trying to answer this very question, I think I really did stumble into a piece of my Jewish identity that I'd never thought mattered to me, and that is tradition. I've been coming to Sunday school since kindergarten, longer than I've done just about anything else in my entire life. There is no tradition with which I am better acquainted than the half hour drive, the friendly “hello”s in the hallway, and the class conversations. Besides my family, there are no friends I've known longer than my classmates here, no adults who have seen me change as much as the ones here. I'm so grateful to all of you, my class, and the Rabbis, Cantor Seplowin and Mrs. Steiman for that tradition. Just the act of coming to Temple, of talking to you about our lives that week, has been such an important part of defining Judaism for me. We are often advised, especially at these sorts of occasions, to relentlessly push ourselves outside of our comfort zones in search of new experiences. While I'm all in favor of adventure, I think traditions serve a very important complementary role to it. Traditions that build a sense of regularity and comfort with identity, like Judaism, provide a “comfort zone” from which we can forge outward in life. They give us a well-understood part of who we are, one that's been here as long as we can remember and surrounds us with people who care about us no matter what, and which we can fall back on even if everything else seems in disarray. It's kind of like a super power. My Judaism will always be there, an indelible part of who I am. There's nothing even I can do to mess it up. That's why I stayed at Temple. It's been such an honor to share the beginning of my Jewish life with you all, and I'm so glad I had the chance. So, thanks for a great 13 years! MATTHEW DEQUATTRO Two years ago, in April, I was lucky enough as a sophomore to go on the March of the Living trip. The March of the Living takes students to Poland for a week to visit concentration camps, and other significant places. We had three Holocaust survivors with us ~ Willy, Ziggy and Molly ~ who were able to share their stories firsthand. On Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, groups from around the world converge at Birkenau and march to Auschwitz. On my trip, there were 12,000 of us who made the 3 mile walk from one camp to the next. It was truly a sight to behold as thousands of Jewish teenagers, waving Israeli flags and the flags of their countries, made their way down the main road to one of the biggest death camps. We marched to show the world that Hitler did not succeed and that the Jewish people will always survive. The following week was spent in Israel where we learned about the foundation of the Jewish state of Israel. We visited a museum about the resistance during the British mandate. We also visited a kibbutz that doubled as a secret bullet manufacturing plant for the resistance. Then we made our way to the Kotel, The Western Wall, in the Old City of Jerusalem. The next day on Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, the 7,000 Jewish teens that made the trip from Poland to Israel marched from a large square in Jerusalem through the gates of the Old City and finally ending at the Kotel. Everybody was singing songs of joy as we marched and celebrated the independence of our Jewish state. The trip remains the greatest learning and experiential trip of my life. I gained friends from England, Brazil, Israel and other places across the United States and Canada. The friendships with last year’s graduates from Beth - El only grew stronger over time. I would like to thank the Brotherhood again for supporting me on this once - in - a - lifetime trip. MICHAEL FRADIN As I was contemplating what to write for this speech, I decided to make an attempt at quantifying the amount of time I’ve spent here at Beth- El. Oddly, the first thing that came to my head was a song that I haven’t heard, let alone thought of, in years ~ “Seasons of Love”, from the musical Rent. Bear with me. 525,600 minutes, how do you measure, measure a year. Of course, I could try and do the math that would determine the actual amount of time that I’ve spent in this Temple, but that would take far too long and way too much effort. Then, I thought…what about the number of bagels I’ve eaten? Or, maybe the number of cups of coffee I’ve drunk? There’s also the number of times I’ve been sent to Mrs. Steiman’s office to be talked to about my disruptiveness in class, but that’s not exactly something we need to talk about. There is also the number of Bar and Bat mitzvahs I’ve been to, as well as hours upon hours spent studying and preparing for my own. We could list the number of Rabbi Gutterman’s sermons I’ve listened to, or just the number of services I’ve been to, in general. The list of possibilities is endless, with each equation having its own complexity. But, I think there is another way to measure how much time I’ve spent here. Every time I walk through the double doors into the Temple, I feel a sort of warmth and welcoming. I’ve noticed that this feeling has gradually increased from day to day and year to year. Even though it’s hard to measure, I think everyone on this bimah with me tonight understands what I’m talking about. It’s a special feeling, one that I haven’t entirely experienced anywhere else. I always know that my Sunday mornings will incorporate smiles and exchanges of happiness. Truthfully, I am going to miss everything about coming to Temple, even waking up at eight in the morning, which is very early for me on the weekends. I’d like to thank every member at Beth-El for being as welcoming as they are. I would also like to thank my parents for giving me the extra nudge to stick with Temple after my Bar Mitzvah. The years spent here have truly changed my life for the better. BENJAMIN TAUBER In the beginning, we were a group of small wide - eyed squirts who were just starting to figure things out. In the early days, we would go to the art room and make a hanukkiah or tablets out of bits collected from the recycling center. We went to music class in the Chapel and enjoyed sing along. As we grew up, we came across much more challenging questions like which chug should I sign up for. That wasn’t really a challenge. It was the food one! It was always the cooking one! However, we had a real challenge ahead of us- completing our Bar and Bat mitzvahs. This milestone of a young Jewish person’s life is daunting if nothing else. However, with the support of our teachers, Rabbis, Mrs. Steiman and our parents, we accomplished our goal and got to peek behind the curtain. No, not the ark curtain; the Jewish adult curtain and with this came new adventures. At this point, I believe, is when our group really solidified. We would come in and watch Jewish themed movies with Rabbi Mack and discuss how those Jewish themes pertained to us. I think that’s something teenagers really like-coming in and talking about themselves. Throughout our Jewish education, we have been taught the ways of Judaism and then asked to question how we should interact with the traditions of Judaism and modern day America. Although I have yet to have an answer, I believe it is vital to this process of Jewish self discovery to have great mentors. So, I would like to thank Rabbi Gutterman, Rabbi Mack, Cantor Seplowin, Mrs. Steiman, all our teachers and our parents. Lastly, I would like to thank my class for helping to create great Jewish memories. ELIZABETH WEINER The best thing about going to Sunday school here is that when we’re younger, we have people to look up to and aspire to become, and when we’re older, we have that privilege of being a mentor and a role model for these kids. That’s what’s called community, and Temple Beth - El has a community that is so incredibly special. I’m Jewish, not because I believe in a higher power or that people can just pop out of each other’s ribs, but because I feel as though I am part of this community. I grew up at Temple Beth - El; my parents grew up here; their parents grew up here. My parents became Consecrated, Bar and Bat Mitzvahed, confirmed, and even married here. Temple Beth - El is part of the reason as to why I exist~without this community, my parents may have never fallen in love. Though that’s up to speculation, I can confidently say that Temple Beth-El is the reason as to why I am who I am. Now, I’m sure you’ve all heard people rave about how fabulous Israel is, and I won’t go on too long about that (that’s what tourism books are for), but I do want to talk about how that trip changed me. During my five week stint in Israel, I was given the opportunity to talk to an incredible variety of people. I talked to people who practiced religions that I didn’t even know existed. I got to listen to both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict argue over that very topic. Granted, most of it was in Hebrew, but I could follow along well enough. I got to explore the land, stay with an Orthodox host family for a Shabbat weekend, and even see what it’s like to be in the IDF for a few days. So, maybe I did some unconventional things in Israel, but I think I came back with a pretty universal feeling; I learned how important being Jewish really is. Being Jewish means that there is one teeny tiny country just for you, waiting to welcome you with open arms and a three course meal. It means that I’m different. It means that I have something unique about me that I can hold onto when I’m having trouble trying to figure out just who it is I am. It’s so important that I had Religious school here for me during my high school years. I didn’t know who I wanted to be ~ I still don’t really know, but I know how I want to live my life. Through Jewish morals and techings, and the guidance of my Rabbis and teachers and really just Temple Beth-El’s community, I know what it takes to be a good person. I do want to thank everyone who makes up Temple Beth-El. You are like a second family to me ~ most of you probably are family! I know that should anything ever happen, I have a home here, and that’s something that not a lot of people can say about their church or temple. I’m proud to say that I am the only girl to graduate with this class of strapping young men because I get the satisfaction of knowing that I did something more with my Sunday mornings than sleeping in. I took those four hours and learned what it takes to be a real live, mature, and morally sound human being in this crazy world. I’ve hugged more old people and babysat more children than any of my friends, and that’s because of the Temple Beth - El community. Nothing beats this place and what it does! I’m really going to miss it, but I won’t forget it. It makes me so proud to say that I’m a member of this congregation. Thank you again for being the best community there is, and for a wonderful 12 years of education. It is so gratifying for us to know that Temple Beth-El has played such an important role in the development of these outstanding young people. We are grateful to our faculty and clergy for their dedication and impact on our children’s Jewish lives. Mazel Tov TO THE PARENTS OF THE GRADUATES! Her claim to fame and what makes her so qualified to serve as a judge (and what many of us miss so much!) was Lloyds, a fabulous East Side eatery she and her husband opened in the 60’s. After Eliot passed away in 1985, Anita and her three daughters ran the show till Lloyds was sold in 1988. In fact the only two things that I really ever enjoyed were her meatloaf and tuna salad sandwiches. To this day, I cannot duplicate the taste of her efforts. The funny part (to me anyway) is that everything else she cooked tasted like one of those two items.” 23 ER H D IN GN OO D TH-EL TH ATIONAL BRO Brotherhood NEWS Brotherhood is jumping in with both feet! 1. Camp Eisner Scholarship Fund $500.00 Camp Eisner allocated $300,000 from its scholarship fund to more than 300 camps whose family finances may not otherwise permit children to experience the joys of Camp Eisner and Reform Judaism. As we prepare to kick off a new and exciting year of Brotherhood, we have some unfinished business to discuss before we move on. 2. Jewish Alliance of Rhode Island, Poverty Programs $500.00 With funding from Alan Hassenfeld, the Jewish Alliance has recently commissioned Brandeis University's Steinhardt Social Research Institute to examine the economic status of Greater Rhode Island's Jewish community. We concluded our year with an amazing Lindenbaum “Person of the Year” event on May 31st. After almost a decade of acknowledging amazing people in our Temple community, you’d think we would run out. As proven that night, that was far from the case as we honored Cantor Judy Seplowin. Scores of people rose up to pay tribute to her, including Clergy, choir members, friends, and more. A well deserved tribute to our beloved Cantor. The results of the study were very concerning and revealed the following: 2% of the RI Jewish population have incomes at the poverty level. 18% of the RI Jewish population have incomes near the poverty level. 30% of the RI Jewish population are considered to be economically vulnerable. only 50% of the RI population are considered to be economically stable. One of our most cherished Brotherhood projects, the awarding of our Brotherhood college scholarships, also took place during the Lindenbaum celebration. This year, we selected three outstanding graduating students to receive a one-thousand dollar scholarship each, to help them begin the next chapter of their lives. The three winners were, Nathan Bresnick, Matthew DeQuattro, and Elizabeth Weiner. They received their funding through the generosity of the Helene and Bertram Bernhardt Foundation, The Pearle W. & Martin Silverstein Foundation, The Leonard C. Mandell Foundation, and your Temple Brotherhood. Mazel Tov to all. 14 24 Brotherhood is pleased to announce that we have earmarked $2500 from our fundraising efforts, to donate to local organizations that match our philosophical mindset. Here is a recap of the organizations and the reason we felt they were in sync with our goals: The donation to the Jewish Alliance would be directed to programs to relieve the plight of the 20% of the RI Jewish population within or near the poverty level. 3. Camp Jori Scholarship Fund $500.00 Camp Jori was established as a summer camp for children in the Jewish Orphanage of Rhode Island. The Orphanage no longer exists, but the mission of the camp remains unchanged, "Provide a high quality overnight Jewish camping experience available to all families in a safe and supportive setting." Camp Jori is substantially smaller than Camp Eisner, but grants over $265,000 in scholarships, primarily to children of RI residents. Many people affiliated with Temple Beth-El have attended Camp Jori. Tuition is approx. $1,000 lower per session than the Camp Eisner tuition. 4. Jewish Family Service of RI, Heating Assistance Program $500.00 This program is intended to subsidize the energy costs of elderly and economically distressed families for winter-time heating. 5. Holocaust Education and Resource Center of RI (HERCRI) $500.00 (including proceeds of the Brotherhood Yellow Candle Project) "Never Forget" ~ the watchwords of those to whom the holocaust has special meaning, regardless of whether it is the horrors of Nazi Germany, the Armenian Holocaust, or the Rwanda Holocaust. The mission of HERCRI is to educate RI students on what can happen unless we are vigilant in protecting the rights and the lives of minorities. It deserves our support, not just because we are Jews, but because we are concerned people who care for one another. WE ARE PROUD THAT WE ARE ABLE TO SUPPORT THESE WONDERFUL ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE GREAT WORK THAT THEY DO. WHAT'S NEXT? BRO TH OD OF TEM PL BE UN A FO BROTHERHOOD HO E ER Now we move into our new year with a new slate of officers, and a renewed passion to continue the great achievements we were able to fulfill in 2014.
