Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Lenguas Modernas de la Universidad de Jaén SURNAME, NAME: ID/PASSPORT: READING You have 70 minutes to complete the following part of the exam. This part of the exam contains THREE tasks which may be divided into sections. EXERCISE 1 The following reading passage contains seven paragraphs (A-G). Read carefully and answer questions 1-9 on your answer sheet. These questions are divided into two different sections. MINIMUM SALARY OF 18€/HOUR www.bbc.com/news A. Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected in a referendum a proposal to introduce what would have been the highest minimum wage in the world. Under the plan, employers would have had to pay workers a minimum 22 Swiss francs (about $25; £15; €18) an hour. B. Supporters said the move was necessary for people to live a decent life. But critics argued that it would raise production costs and increase unemployment. page 1 of 8 C. The minimum wage proposal was rejected by 76% of voters. Supporters had argued it would “protect equitable pay,” but the Swiss Business Federation said it would harm low-paid workers in particular. D. The issue was just the most prominent of several referendums held on Sunday. A controversial plan to buy 22 Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets for the Swiss Air Force was narrowly rejected by 53% of voters. Meanwhile, 63% of voters backed a plan to impose a lifelong ban on convicted paedophiles to work with children. But it was the trade union-backed proposal to ensure that the annual salary was not less than £32,000 ($53,600) a year that provoked the most debate. E. Unions argued that the measure was necessary because of the high living costs in big Swiss cities such as Geneva and Zurich. The unions are angry that Switzerland – one of the richest countries in the world – does not have a minimum pay level, while neighbouring France does and Germany will (8.5 euros an hour from 2017). They argue that surviving on less than 4,000 francs a month is not possible because rents, health insurance and food are all prohibitively expensive. F. A key element of the campaign in favour of a minimum wage was the argument that the Swiss welfare system was being forced to subsidise businesses which refuse to pay a living wage. But business leaders and the government said low unemployment and high standards of living for the majority showed there was no need for change. Small businesses, in particular Swiss farmers, were especially worried that being forced to pay their staff 4,000 francs a month would price their products out of the market. G. Most of Switzerland's low-paid workers operate in the service industry, in hotels and restaurants, and the majority of them are women. Section 1 (questions 1-4). Choose the best answer or ending for the statements below. ONLY ONE ANSWER is correct in each case. In boxes 1-4 on your answer sheet, write the LETTER that corresponds to your answer: 1. The minimum salary of 22 Swiss francs a. was rejected by a narrow limit. b. was passed by a narrow limit. c. was put to referendum together with other ballots. d. might affect the Swiss Air Force budget. page 2 of 8 2. Swiss voters a. have backed convicted paedophiles who plan to work with children. b. have backed the plan of the Swiss Air Force to buy war aircrafts. c. have backed a ban on certain convicted criminals. d. have set their annual salary in not less than £32,000 a year. 3. Business leaders and Swiss farmers a. forced the Swiss welfare system to subsidise the minimum salary. b. rejected the minimum salary because it was unnecessary or potentially harmful. c. claimed that they can only be forced to pay 4,000 francs a month. d. put the blame for low salaries on workers in the service industry. 4. The writer of the text shows a. a positive attitude towards the minimum salary. b. a negative attitude towards the minimum salary. c. a neutral attitude towards the minimum salary. d. discomfort with the fact that women are particularly affected by low salaries. Read carefully and answer questions 10-18 on your answer sheet. These questions are divided into three different sections. GAME OF THRONES SEASON 5 SET TO SHOOT IN SPAIN au.ibtimes.com & www.thelocal.es A. Game of Thrones (Season 4) is now down to its last episodes and, as the storyline progresses, anticipation is rising for what the season finale will bring. HBO, one of the leading American television networks, already renewed the series for another two seasons and eyes are already looking ahead to season 5. B. The HBO Original Series has been shooting during the summer for the past four seasons and the same could be expected for season 5. Recent reports suggest that the production team has been scouting for locations in Spain, particularly in the Andalucía region. There is no word yet as to which part of Westeros will be depicted in the locations in Spain, but the Andalusian region boasts of a very diverse landscape from the coast all the way up to the snowy Sierra Nevada mountain range. C. The US ambassador to Spain, James Costos, and one-time HBO employee, has also confirmed the rumours. The channel “is looking at filming in Spain. They are in firm negotiations with the Andalusian Film Commission,” he told Spanish radio station Cadena SER. “I don't work for them anymore, and I don't know the details of what HBO is considering, but if you know the series, you will know it's something important, that they do things on a large scale, and that this will translate into a huge economic boost,” Costos added. page 4 of 8 D. Some of the best preserved Moorish castles are also located in Andalucía and these can easily fit into one of the locations that have yet to be seen in the series, such as Dorne and Highgarden. There are also many locations outside of Westeros for which a real-world home base needs to be found. E. At present, scenes for the series have been shot in six locations. The main studio is located in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where production for the series is taking place at the Titanic studios, the old shipyard where the ill-fated ship was built. Winterfell was also shot partly on location in Northern Ireland. Other locations are: Croatia, where the Red Keep and King's Landing are depicted; Iceland has been a fitting location for scenes North of the Wall, while Morocco and Malta have been used as the Cities of Slaver's Bay in Essos and, finally, scenes were also briefly shot in Los Angeles for the bear pit in Harrenhal. F. The series is staying as popular as ever, with episode 7 tying the series high in viewership this season, reaching 7.2 million viewers for its first airing and 8.5 million viewers for the night. The series has already outdone itself by breaking records or tying viewership highs for the fourth time this season alone. The season started with the build-up to the Purple Wedding, but it is expected to end with even more deaths and twists, as can be predicted from the books. G. It remains to be seen exactly what kingdom, territory or castle would be represented by the locations in Spain, but this new development will surely help fans picture what lies ahead and build anticipation for another year of torturous waiting for the next season. Section 1 (questions 10-14). According to the information given in the text above, are the following statements TRUE or FALSE? In boxes 10-14 on your answer sheet, write: TRUE if the statement is true according to the text. FALSE if the statement is false according to the text. NOT GIVEN if no information is given. 10. The TV show Game of Thrones is to be continued for the next two years at least. 11. Spanish politicians think that filming the series in Andalucía will translate into a huge economic boost. 12. The production crew of Titanic is now collaborating in the shooting of Game of Thrones in Northern Ireland. 13. The series has been solely filmed on European territory. 14. Costos’ statement has leaked exactly what part of Westeros will be located in Spain. page 5 of 8 Section 2 (question 15). We have underlined the word “outdone” in paragraph F for you. Which of the following words is closer in meaning to “outdone”? Write THE LETTER of your answer in box 15 on your answer sheet: a. eclipsed b. prevailed c. outstripped d. gilded Section 3 (questions 16-18). The Spanish radio station Cadena SER was the first to report that HBO’s successful fantasy drama series is (16) _____________ Andalucía to film part of the next series in Spain. HBO producers are in talks with the local film commission regarding possible shooting locations. The hype matches the popularity of the show on screen, which has reached eye-popping figures of up to 8.5 million viewers for one single premiere. page 6 of 8 EXERCISE 3 You are going to read a short story by Ernest Hemingway called A Very Short Story.
