We always strive to make sure patients don’t have skin cancer. And, since skin cancers usually are pain free, any growth could be a skin cancer. It is our privilege to care for people and to diagnosis and treat any potential of skin cancer. Ultimately, our goal is to provide people with peace of mind. Trust is key to the experience we desire for each patient. We prioritize experience so that any time you have an existing or new growth, we are the first place you want to visit. I also want to talk about a different type of growth. Recently, a dental colleague forwarded me an article outlining the different mindsets. There are essentially two mindsets. We are all either in a fixed or growth mindsets. Carol Dweck, Ph.D is an expert in this field and helped outline these two concepts in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Save The Date! I don’t wear sunscreen because I am never outside, so why does it matter? A. This is not really an accurate statement because we are ‘outside’ much more than we think. Any time you can see the sun, the sun can see you. So being by a window, riding in a car, sitting in an office by a window — all these are considered “outside” for your skin. Windows, unless tinted to block all of the Ultraviolet (UV) light, only blocks UVB light, not UVA. UVA can penetrate much deeper than UVB and causes skin aging and skin cancer. UVA stays the same all year long so that is one reason that we recommend wearing sun protection all year long. UVB which helps define the UV index, is higher in the summer and lower in the winter, but is never 0 (except at night.) The photo included in this note is a truck driver who visited a dermatologist after many years of driving. Please note the patient’s left side of his face. This is from a person who wasn’t ‘outside.’ As you can see he has significant damage on the left side of his face causing wrinkling, pigment change and even a change in his eye anatomy. I am sure all of you brush your teeth each day. Did you know that brushing your teeth is less effective in preventing cavities than sun protection is in preventing skin cancer? We haven’t found any other cream that can make you look better and prevent skin cancer, so remember that each day that ends in ‘y’ is a day for sunscreen and a way to achieve better skin for a better life®. Many irate moms have complained to me that their kids got burned, but used sunscreen. Let’s look a bit harder. Did you use a lotion, spray or cream? This is important because if you did use a spray and didn’t rub it in, it may not have been as effective. How often did you reapply? Most people don’t reapply often enough. I say at least hourly! You must reapply frequently, especially when swimming or heavy sweating. Using SPF 30, at minimum, is another important factor. Most people only use a quarter of the amount of sunscreen recommended. The correct amount of sunscreen to get the SPF protection listed on the bottle is 1 oz. if you are in a swimsuit (the amount that fills a shot glass for the over 21 crowd.) So, if you are outside in swimsuit for 3 hours, you would use 3 ounces of sunscreen if reapplying correctly. applying 30 minutes before sun exposure is ideal. We recommend using 3 fingertip units for the face, 3 for each arm and 1 for the neck and ears. Also, hats and sun protective clothing can be key. Next time you are out, count the number of people wearing a broad rimmed hat. The number is very, very small. We are fortunate to have so many great sun protection products so select one you like. Avoid the burn® by following these simple rules! Wishing you better skin for a better life®. We finally have an amazing way to treat that pesky double chin that people hate. Just like the lower abdomen, this area can be very resistant to weight loss as a way to improve this cosmetic area. The answer is a product called Kybella (Deoxycholic acid). Kybella is a medicine that is injected into a double chin to improve the appearance and most importantly the profile. How does it work? Glad you asked! It permanently removes the extra fat (the submental fat pad). The medicine, when injected, causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed these cells can no longer accumulate fat. This is great news! Patients typically need at least two series of injection into the neck area about six weeks apart. Common side effects include bruising and pain at the injection site with some itching and warmth noted as well. We are excited to offer this opportunity to our patient. We invite you to schedule a complimentary evaluation to see if you are a good candidate for this treatment! This certainly compliments our mission for better skin for a better life®. 4 // www.sunflowerdermatology.com // facebook.com/sunflowerdermatology One of our favorite events is back! Kansas City Fashion Week (KCFW) is scheduled for October 7-15, 2016. Featuring local, national and international designers, each year KCFW produces premier runway shows, enabling designers to collaborate with seasoned stylists, make-up artists, models and photographers to present their collections in the most professional atmosphere imaginable. Last year Fair & Fashionable received a significant grant from KCFW. It has enabled us to make solid strides toward our mission. We look forward to supporting this year’s KCFW by once again educating those in attendance about the importance of a tan-free life. Fair & Fashionable, Inc. aims to decrease the incidence of melanoma in women by changing the belief that suntanned skin is healthy and in-style. The growth mindset, on the other hand, embraces challenges, persists in the face of setbacks, sees effort as a path to mastery, learns from criticism and finds lessons and inspiration in the success of others. Which one are you? I am mostly a growth mindset person and I have to fight to not have a fixed mindset during some seasons of my life. Sometimes this is easy and sometimes it isn’t.
