Mid-Ohio and VIR are very different, but each have their own advantages. I can’t pick a favorite at this time, and I plan to return to both next year. Mid-Ohio is closer , but the accommodations at VIR are very nice (did everyone see Top Gear’s VIR episode?). The commute to VIR is a bit more work for those of us in the SWVR, but the opportunity to run on the Grand Course makes it well worth the extra fuel and brow sweat as you tow your vehicle back over Lover’s Leap… at night. TrackDaze ran a great show at VIR this month. Track time, itinerary, and instruction were top notch. As a bonus, Luke, Tim, and I were able to meet and speak with Randy Pobst, who took Luke’s Viper out for a few hot laps. Luke’s original videos and TrackDaze promotional video can be found by searching youtube for “pobst viper vir”. We’re planning a trip back to Mid-Ohio in April with the Porsche (PCA) club. Feel free to contact me for more info. They are a very welcoming group with excellent classroom instruction. If you’re thinking of going for your first time, I highly recommend starting with this group. Scat Pack. Plymouth had "The Rapid Transit System". Chrysler's 426 Hemi engine is legendary. It commonly refered to as what nickname? Elephant. A name given because of its overall huge proportions. To see one installed in any Chrysler vehicle leaves you wondering how they made it fit. What Chevrolet muscle car had a factory installed 302 cid motor, during its first generation? Z-28 Camaro. SCCA Trans Am racing rules required no more than 305 cid motors for any factory T/A racecar. Chevy made this motor only for the '67 '68 & '69 Z-28's to meet the homologation requirements of the time. When did Dodge Chargers stop having flip-out lights? 1973. Chargers stopped having flip-out lights in 1973, because Dodge now considered their muscle car a "family car." Which car started Plymouth's muscle car lineup? GTX. Before the GTX, Plymouth was considered a bland car manufacturer. Then came the GTX. Some people might consider the Barracuda to be Plymouths first muscle car. But it was a pony car to compete with the Mustang until the late 60's when both became muscle cars. How much horsepower did a Hemi usually put out? 425. Hemi engines were rated by Chrysler at 425 HP to keep insurance as low as possible, but the true rating was just over 500 HP! These were put in Chargers, Challengers, GTXs, Barracudas, and more! What Dodge car was the Plymouth Barracuda equivalent? Dodge Challenger. The Challenger was the Barracuda's Dodge twin. You can tell by the body shape and headlights. What was the first year Dodge Chargers had the vertical split grill? 1969. This year of Charger was used in the show "The Dukes of Hazzard". In 1969 you could order a Mustang Mach 1 from your favorite Ford dealership with a 428 SCJ motor. What does SCJ stand for? Super Cobra Jet. Heavier connecting rods and forged pistons were just some of the major differences between the SCJ 428 and the CJ 428. If I were to beat a Porsche 911/SC in a local autocross with my 1967 stage IV optioned Yenko Stinger, what kind of Chevrolet would I be driving? Corvair. The Corvair is not a Muscle car per se, but if Don Yenko re-engineered it and it devlops 240 hp in a 2500lb. car, it's pretty close. Introduced mid-decade, this second generation Chevrolet big block motor was designed to replace the antiquated 348 & 409 big blocks from previous years. What year did Chevrolet introduce this new big block engine, starting off at 396 cubic inches? 1965. 1965. The only year a Corvette was factory optioned with a 396. If you wanted a big block 'Vette from '66 onward, you had only 427's and the later 454's to choose from. In 1967, you could order a Coronet R/T from your friendly Dodge dealer. It came standard with the 440 ci motor and the only other engine option was the venerable 426 Hemi. What does R/T stand for? Road & Track. Nothing under a 440 or Hemi available in the early R/T Dodge's. In 1968, Dodge needed a quick response to Plymouth's popular Road Runner "stripper" muscle car. Dodge fired back with the mid-year introduction of the...? Super Bee. The Super Bee sold fairly well, but with a six month lead, Plymouth had already captured the public's imagination with the Road Runner. If I raced a 1970 Yenko "Deuce" through the quarter mile in 12.98 seconds, what kind of Chevrolet would I be driving? Nova. LT-1 350 powered Nova/ Chevy II, hence "Deuce". Page 14 __Rich Mixture__ For Sale Contact Dan at dpz48@yahoo.com 1985-1/2 Porsche 944 . A twoowner car with about 90,000 miles on it. It has not been driven much in the last 2-3 years. It is in good condition and everything works on it. It has a complete repair record since I purchased it in 1990 and was driven recently for state inspection. It has a 4 cylinder 2.5 liter engine and manual 5-speed transmission. Asking price $5500 or best reasonable offer. 1976 Porsche 911S Coupe. A two owner car with about 85000 miles on it. It is not driven very much lately. The interior needs some work, primarily on the vinyl seats and headliner. The after-market(?) A/C does not currently work. The car has a 2.7 liter six cylinder block and manual 5-speed transmission. In 1985, the car was gone over from the ground up by Holbert Motors in Warminster, PA who ran the US Porsche Racing Team at that time. Numerous updates have been installed to keep it as current as possible and was recently inspected. Full repair record receipts are available for this car since I have owned it. The original Blaupunkt radio is available as well as the special halogen lamps and headlight assemblies that were on the car when I purchased it. It has not been used for the last six years when it was winterized and fuel stabilized. Single axle trailer which does not have electric brakes. The boat and trailer are in excellent condition. The original wood on the trailer steps was replaced with aluminum deckplating. All cushions have been stored indoors since the boat was last used. A full canvas top is available which has sufficient head room for standing persons. A tow behind tube and set of older water skis go along with the boat as well as various accessories. Teak swim deck. It will probably need to have the fuel drained and carb’s rebuilt to get it running again given the length of time since it was last used. Asking $4000. Page 16 __Rich Mixture__ FUN FACTS - Dragsters • • • • • • • • • • • • • One dragster's 500-inch Hemi makes more horsepower then the first 8 rows at Daytona. Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 1/2 gallons of nitro per second, the same rate of fuel consumption as a fully loaded 747 but with 4 times the energy volume. The supercharger takes more power to drive than a stock hemi makes. Even with nearly 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into nearly-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock. Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. At stoichiometric (exact) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture (for nitro), the flame front of nitromethane measures 7050 degrees F. Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression-plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting off its fuel flow. If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in those cylinders and then explodes with a force that can blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or blow the block in half. Dragsters twist the crank (torsionally) so far (20 degrees in the big end of the track) that sometimes cam lobes are ground offset from front to rear to re-phase the valve timing somewhere closer to synchronization with the pistons. To exceed 300mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4G's. But in reaching 200 mph well before 1/2 track, launch acceleration is closer to 8G's. If all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs $1000.00 per second. Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have read this sentence. Did you know … … that the nitromethane-powered engines of NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars produce approximately 7,000 horsepower, about 37 times that of the average street car? … that one cylinder of the eight cylinders of a Top Fuel dragster or a Funny Car produces 750 horsepower, equaling the entire horsepower output of a NASCAR engine? Page 17 __Rich Mixture__ FUN FACTS - Dragsters Did you know… … that the gasoline-powered engines of NHRA Pro Stock cars produce about 1,200 horsepower, about eight times that of the average street car? … that an NHRA Top Fuel dragster accelerates from 0 to 100 mph in less than .8-second, almost 11 seconds quicker than it takes a production Porsche 911 Turbo to reach the same speed? … that an NHRA Top Fuel dragster leaves the starting line with a force nearly five times that of gravity, the same force of the space shuttle when it leaves the launching pad at Cape Canaveral? … that an NHRA Funny Car is slowed by a reverse force more than seven times that of gravity when both parachutes deploy simultaneously? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars consume between four and five gallons of fuel during a quarter-mile run, which is equivalent to between 16 and 20 gallons per mile? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars use between 10 and 12 gallons of fuel for a complete pass, including the burnout, backup to the starting line, and quarter-mile run? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars travel the length of more than four football fields in less than five seconds? … that NHRA Top Fuel dragsters can exceed 280 mph in just 660 feet? … that from a standing start, NHRA Top Fuel dragsters accelerate faster than a jumbo jet, a fighter jet, and a Formula One race car? … that a fuel pump for an NHRA Top Fuel dragster and Funny Car delivers 65 gallons of fuel per minute, equivalent to eight bathroom showers running at the same time? … that the fuel-line pressure for NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars is between 400 and 500 pounds, about 20 times greater than the pressure on passenger-car fuel pumps? … that depending on size and angle, the large rear wing on an NHRA Top Fuel dragster develops between 4,000 and 8,000 pounds of downforce? … that the 17-inch rear tires used on NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars wear out after four to six runs, or about two miles? Some brands of passenger-car tires are guaranteed for 80,000 miles. … that it takes just 15/100ths of a second for all 7,000 horsepower of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster engine to reach the rear wheels? … that it's desirable for an NHRA Top Fuel dragster to race with its front wheels inches off the ground for about the first 200 feet of the run? This ensures proper weight transfer to the rear wheels, a crucial part of a good launch and quick run. … that the nitromethane used to power the engines of NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars costs about $30 per gallon?
