The Royal Irish Regiment
The Royal Irish Regiment are a military team that are based in Northern
Ireland, many of the present players would have been involved in
terrorist incidents throughout their careers and Rugby was a way of
relieving the stresses of work. The team started in 1992 and is finishing
with a Canadian tour in May of 2006. The
reason the team are folding is due to the
sad disbandment of their Regiment starting
in March 2007.
The team has been extremely
successful, winning lots of silver
wear in both cup and league
competition. The team has
been lucky to tour several
countries and is looking
forward to finishing with a
fantastic tour in Canada, a
country where their present
coach Dean Murten has coached
and is well aware of the high standard
of Rugby and most importantly the fantastic
hospitality. So what better place to go than Lloydminster, and play the
Reapers Rugby Club and enjoy the hospitality of JT’s Bar & Grill and the
Kooler Night Club.
The team also participated in the Edmonton Rugby Fest with the Reapers
on May long weekend, and also played three other Edmonton area teams
making this a tough tour for the boys. Most of the boys are in the twilight
of their playing careers, but are at the height of their social days so it
plans to be a great day.
So I bet you are thinking how does a new club like the Reapers end up
mixed up with the Royal Irish Regiment? In 2004 during the Reapers
inaugural year the Sr. Men were approached by Dean Murten who was
stationed in Wainwright about the possibilities of coaching the team. The
Reapers jumped at the chance to have someone with so much experience
leading and training the new club. Dean’s involvement immediately
changed the club taking the talent of the players and molding them into
a team making the most of their talent and potential. Even though Dean
was not involved with the team this year or in 2005 a lot of the things
he has taught and passed on to the Reapers can still be seen in the
training and play of the club. The Reapers greatly thank Dean for all the
influence he had on our club, and wouldn’t want it any other way.

Memorable Rugby Moment: I was in grade 10, we were in Edmonton at Elerslie playing in a tournament,
our coach comes up to me puts his hand on my shoulder and says, “ I have never started a grade
10 twerp before. But I’m going to start you at wing this game.” It was our first tourney of the year. I
was so nervous, but I went out and had a good game and ended up starting every game after that.
