2014 ANNUAL REPORT
voices
the voices of morris animal foundation
Founded in 1948, Morris Animal Foundation improves the health and
well-being of companion animals and wildlife by funding humane
health studies and disseminating information about those studies
Dear Friends,
People are the heart of any organization, and
Morris Animal Foundation is fortunate to have
a reputation that attracts passionate people.
In this annual report, you’ll hear from many of
them.
Our talented staff, trustees, scientific advisory
board members and volunteers give our
mission a voice and help us make this a better
world for the animals we all love.
While we know we do good work, sometimes
we forget how well-respected Morris Animal
Foundation is until someone comes in with
a fresh perspective. Last year when Dr.
Diane Brown, left Harvard Medical School/
Massachusetts General Hospital to become the
Foundation’s chief scientific officer, she told
us, “You may not know it, but Morris Animal
Foundation is just as prestigious as Harvard for
those of us who love animals.”
Based on our success in fiscal year 2014, we
expect our reputation for improving animal
health will only continue to grow. Last year, we
invested in 227 of the absolute best studies
in the world in terms of scientific feasibility,
potential impact and relevance to our mission.
These studies will move us significantly
forward in our understanding of diseases
ranging from respiratory disease in shelter
kittens, to cancer in dogs seemingly too young
to develop the disease, to pneumonia that
affects foals before their owners are aware they
are sick. They will also make great headway
for wild species—from finding safer ways
to anesthetize rhinoceros to understanding
how changing weather patterns are affecting
endangered sea turtles.
This is critical work that will make a real
difference in the lives of animals, and the
efforts that go into ensuring the quality of that
work are substantial.
I am so thankful for the people who ensure
that we are supporting the very best science:
the staff, the trustees and the volunteer
members of the four scientific advisory boards.
Of course, this level of quality and innovation
wouldn’t be possible without the support of
people like you. Generating ideas is easy, but
translating those ideas into action is hard—and
expensive. I am perhaps most thankful for our
dedicated donors because you enable us to do
great work on behalf of animals.
As we move forward, we are always looking
for ways in which to increase our efficiency, to
ensure that every dollar possible goes toward
powerful research. We’re also developing
ways to better communicate our successes to
others and to provide guidance to the scientific
community.
Good organizations should strive for continual
improvement, and we rely on passionate
people to help us do so.
Thank you for adding your voice to our
mission. There is so much to be hopeful for,
and we will not rest until all animals can enjoy
a lifetime of good health. We look forward to a
prosperous and healthy 2015.
Sincerely,
David Haworth, DVM, PhD

“Many animals do not have a lifetime of good health.
Science holds the keys to the solution.”
Dr. Diane Brown
Animal health advances have moved
quickly in the past decade as new
technologies emerge. Morris Animal
Foundation is proud to remain a leader in
filling knowledge gaps, training scientists
and supporting the most cutting-edge
research to benefit animals and the
veterinarians who work to help them.
Chief Scientific Officer, Morris Animal Foundation
those caused by emerging and newly
identified pathogens, significantly affect
the health of animals and humans on a
global scale. Understanding how diseases
are transmitted will help prevent their
spread.
Cancer is the top cause of disease-
related death in pets older than 10
years of age. Understanding how cancer
develops will lead to better diagnostics
and more effective treatments.
Genetic diseases cause a
wide range of problems in animals.
Understanding genetics will lead to better
diagnostic tests to prevent disease and
will increase the availability of effective
treatments.
Metabolic diseases are of
growing concern in veterinary and
human medicine, but they aren’t well
understood. Understanding how metabolic
abnormalities contribute to disease can
point scientists toward prevention and
improved treatment.

Morris Animal Foundation prides itself on
the quality of our partners and sponsors.
Together, we are changing the course of
veterinary medicine and making the world
a brighter place for animals.
Strong partners have enabled us to
increase our health research funding by
45 percent in just five years.
“We are proud of our partnership with
Morris Animal Foundation. Because
medical advancements depend on
research, when we developed our Cover
Dog Campaign to raise funds to fight canine
cancer, we knew we needed a partner
who was knowledgeable about where that
research was needed. Based on their
unequaled experience, we put our faith in
Morris to sponsor the projects that will make
the biggest difference.”

The K9 Cancer Walks memorialize
beloved dogs lost to cancer, celebrate
dogs that have survived cancer and
create a brighter future for current canine
companions, all while raising funds for
canine cancer research initiatives.
Each of the six volunteer-driven walks is
unique, but together they have a common
goal: to help Morris Animal Foundation
understand and beat canine cancer.

“Like so many pet owners, many of our planning
committee members have been personally
affected by cancer. When one of our pets is
impacted by cancer, we all rally around them, just
like our friends at Morris Animal Foundation rally
to give animals longer, healthier tomorrows.”
Jim Tedford
Knoxville K9 Cancer Walk Chair
“Morris Animal Foundation is well-positioned to continue its tradition as a
central voice in the animal health conversation for generations to come. As
veterinary research and the health issues our world’s companion animals
and wildlife face evolve, it is an especially important time for the Foundation
to provide and develop resources that will fund more breakthroughs. I am
pleased to serve among and lead the Foundation’s trustees as we shepherd
the organization into a new era of impact for the animals we love and serve.”
