It was a spectacular evening in which the Panthers put on a “show to remember” defeating Elyria High 56 to 35. Without question, the game was a community “highlight.” Underneath it all, however, something much greater may have occurred which can hopefully impact the future of EC more than anything else. The game provided a portal that allowed EC’s past to become instantly fused with the present. Beginning with Coach Wayne Diederich’s invitation to past players as well as countless correspondences between those still in town to classmates all over the country, Panthers from every era, past and present, found a reason to “come home.” Our student body’s “whiteout” was something to witness, but the excitement exuded through the stories and embraces formed years ago by “Panthers of the past” may have topped the loudest of cheers. There would be little debate to all present, that a very powerful and spiritual “sense of belonging” to something special seemed to permeate the air. The once proud past had been united with the present and any alumni or friend of EC had a profound pride in the realization that they are part of a mission and vision that continues to alter futures of young men and women through Elyria Catholic High School. One of my highlights from that historic evening is my recollection of three girls perhaps six or seven years in age, who stood and cheered the entire game in their Elyria Catholic hoodies with Panther paws adorning their young faces. Surely they were pondering their high school futures. Fusing the past with the present is a vital and necessary ingredient to ensuring that future. It should be the hope and prayer of us all that each of these girls one day has the opportunity to experience the same charisms shared with us all at EC. Never doubt that a group of generous and committed alumni, parents, and friends, can ensure the future of EC. It’s the only thing that ever has! Sincerely yours in Christ, Andrew G. Walking for Wings Opening School Mass Sets the Tone for the New School Year By: Nicole Koubek ‘12 EC service organization, Hippies for Happiness, hosted a Walking for Wings charity event in September. All proceeds from the walk-a-thon benefited the Angels for Kids Foundation, which raises money for children in need. In addition to walking, the club also offered many activities such as face painting, caricatures, shirt making, tattoos and carnival games. The EC faculty showed their support of the event by holding a chili cook off. At the end of the day, all of the club’s hard work paid off when they were able to present the Angels for Kids Foundation with a donation of more than $4,100! Once again, students and faculty gathered together for tradition and celebration to kick off the school year with the opening school mass. Students began with “clapping in” the new freshman class. The mass was led by Father Al Krupp, pastor of St. Agnes Church in Elyria. This was one of the last masses Fr. Krupp presided over for the students at EC because he is leaving St. Agnes to do some other work for the Cleveland diocese. Father Al spoke about the importance of keeping our eye on the horizon. His explanation painted a beautiful image of how each and every student should lead his or her life and provided a thought-provoking idea for the start of a new school year. STUDENT NEWS Elyria Catholic Welcomes The Class of 2014 EC welcomed 132 freshman on August 25, 2010. As the new faces walked down the halls with schedules in hand, the ambassadors were ready to help direct them and ease their tensions! Homecoming 2010 Homecoming Court: Brooke Dungan Cierra Best Ashley Anderson Anna McNeeley Shannon Tomshack, Queen Conor Voreis Frank Sanabria, King Zack Rogers Danny Reaser Tyler Vanderhoof EC Spirit Shop Gets a Facelift Back in May, Elyria Catholic received a donation of $14,000 from the Ely Trust courtesy of Mr. David George and Mr. Frank Boyson. This donation will transform the EC spirit shop from a closet to an actual store. The new spirit shop will carry a much bigger inventory and selection. The store will be built off the plaza next to the school office and athletic department. It is our hope that the new spirit shop will be completed in time for the basketball season. Stay tuned for more details to come! STUDENT NEWS Panthers Win First Ever City Championship! By: Rob Zidek ‘86 The 2010 Panther Football program proudly and courageously carried the hopes and dreams of six decades of EC Alumni and fans on it’s shoulders. September 9 had been circled on calendars for months and the game had as much hype as any playoff or championship game would. The game itself exceeded expectations and the pre-game anticipation was replaced with a spirited, hardhitting and high-flying shootout. The Panthers and Pioneers combined for nearly 1100 yards from scrimmage and 91 points en-route to an EC victory that will be talked about for decades. The Panthers pulled away in the second half, and the shootout ended with a 56-35 score and EC hoisting the trophy. LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL You’ve got the whole world in your hands, What will you do?? Our new school year theme may seem a bit daunting…how can the responsibility of our world rest in my hands? Yet, if you do not ask that question, how do we look at ourselves to judge that we are using the talents and potential that God has given us. God wants us to better ourselves, intellectually and spiritually, so that we may give back to others and ultimately make the world a better place. The truth is, we have to start small and then branch out. That is our focus this year. The activities planned are specific to an end that will build our students and school community, including parents. We want our school community to become aware that the actions we take and the participation in opportunities builds our sense of who we are in the big picture of this world. Each of us can make a difference, individually and as a unified entity. Two very specific examples of this came from our September events; first was the great turnout for our first Family Mass held in the EC Coliseum on Sunday, September 19, 2010. There was an aura in the room that many felt and commented on…“this was the most beautiful mass experience I have had”, “I have never felt this good about attending a liturgy than today”. These are just a sampling, but it makes you think about what we at EC sometimes take for granted in our school community. Through participation in our monthly mass, we got to share with many in our extended community spiritual growth that answers the question, what will you do?…All of you experienced this if you were able to participate in this special celebration of the Eucharist. One other example was the recent outreach planned by our student organizations to assist the non-profit, Angels for Kids. Our students challenged themselves to approach this outreach with the determination that they were going to make a difference in the lives of children that cannot help themselves. This was an extremely successful event, not just because the students were able to reach their goal financially, but the lessons learned in planning, executing and the follow up that must take place in order for something this successful to occur. We will continue to challenge our students to make the world a better place and answer the question, what will you do? They will take these experiences into their collegiate and adult lives and develop their perspectives of the world.
