As a consequence of the general economic crisis the gross domestic product declined in 2009. However, since the beginning of 2010 a positive trend in the economic performance becomes evident resulting in an increase of exports. The automotive industry is one of the most important drivers of innovations and thus opens up new product segments in international markets. This industry is a key sector also in Bavaria – with worldwide leading manufacturers, a network of excellent suppliers and innovative start-ups as well as a strong infrastructure for research and development. The development of innovative ideas and their implementation requires networking beyond the core automotive industry – comprising e. g. new materials for light-weight structures, drive systems, on-board electronics, interior fittings and systems for comfort and safety. Cooperation is a key aspect concerning the optimization of conventional vehicles as well as new future-oriented technologies e. g. for electric mobility. Developments in the field of electric mobility are supported by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology through a specific funding programme. Efficient networking along the added-value chains is essential in order to be well prepared for the ongoing challenges of global competition. In 1997, the Bavarian State Government launched the Bavarian Innovation and Cooperation Initiative for the Automotive Suppliers Industry (BAIKA) to support the process of networking on a regional, national and international level. Bayern Innovativ GmbH coordinates BAIKA and brings together companies from the automotive industry and from other relevant sectors as well as research institutes, thereby forming sustainable network structures. Today, the BAIKA network comprises more than 2,200 companies and scientific institutions from 50 countries, among these, some 1,100 from Bavaria. The main objective of the Cluster Initiative, launched in 2006 by the Bavarian State Government, is to support cooperation among companies and institutes especially in Bavaria, since proximity is an asset regarding speed and flexibility in development and 02_12S_Jahreskongress_Zuli10_en 28.04.2010 10:49 Uhr Seite 6 production. Thus, the increasing diversity of products with small batches can be regarded as a special opportunity for the automotive industry in western countries. Bayern Innovativ is responsible for the management of the Bavarian Automotive Cluster. It opens up additional options for innovation, also through synergies with BAIKA. This year, Bayern Innovativ is planning and organizing the twelfth annual automotive supplier congress “Zulieferer Innovativ“ – one of the most important international meetingpoints for the automotive industry – in collaboration with the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Berlin, and the IFG-Ingolstadt, and supported by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology. The political framework for promoting innovations will be outlined, industry and science will provide an insight into latest developments for drive systems and e-mobility, into technological features for increasing the emotional value of the car as well a different approaches for success in a competitive market. In combination with the accompanying exhibition “Zulieferer Innovativ” will once again be a highly attractive marketplace for establishing new cooperations for innovations of tomorrow. I would like to cordially invite all interested parties and wish all participants a successful congress.
