Motivated Students and Resourceful Faculty
How is Shepherd University funded?
Shepherd University is proud to serve as an economic engine for the state of West Virginia and the surrounding
region, and as a center for higher learning and culture. Shepherd graduates serve society as teachers, scientists,
artists, musicians, business and community leaders, and entrepreneurs.
Shepherd University is a state-assisted institution. During the
2008-09 academic year, only 20 percent of Shepherd’s budget was
funded by the state of West Virginia. State support for institutions of higher learning has been steadily declining in recent years.
Students depend more and more on private scholarships to bridge
the gap between family finances and the cost of their education.
Shepherd University students are motivated and resourceful in financing their educations; however, despite innovative use of resources, Shepherd’s tuition and fees have risen and students bear the burden of these increased
costs. Private annual and endowed gifts through the Shepherd University Foundation directly assist students
through scholarship awards.
Likewise, faced with steadily declining state support, Shepherd’s faculty, administrators, and staff continue to
creatively use all resources at their disposal to provide students with an outstanding educational experience. Donations to support academic programs directly benefit the classroom learning environment. Gifts to endow faculty
excellence funds serve to recruit and retain the highest level of distinguished scholars to teach Shepherd students.
Our state, region, and country will prosper as Shepherd University produces more graduates. Through the
forward-thinking generosity of donors and proficient fiscal management, students and faculty alike continue to be
motivated and inspired in the classroom and in society.
Faculty members reply on limited private funds for academic
research and technology to inspire and sustain innovative curriculum. Endowed faculty excellence awards assist Shepherd to recruit
and retain distinguished faculty members who inspire our students
to excel.
Your private gift will make a difference.
