The Vigil May 22, 2016 Trinity Sunday “The Spirit of Truth” Today’s Readings St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church First Reading: Proverbs 8:22-31 (The discourse of wisdom) Mass Times: St. Charles: Wednesday 10:30am; Sunday 8:15am AND 11:30am Second Reading: Romans 5:1-5 (Faith, hope, and love) Nativity: Thursday Noon; Saturday 4pm; Sunday 9:45am “The Lord Be With You.” Gospel: John 16:12-15 (Coming of the Paraclete) Pastor’s Pen On this feast of Trinity Sunday, we are reminded of the community of the Trinity. We are reminded of the three persons of the Trinity pouring themselves out for one another in mutual love. This becomes the call to the whole world to live in mutual love and respect. As I look at our world it seems we have strayed far from that call of the Trinity. Paul’s letter to the Romans in Chapter 12 sums it up wonderfully: “Brothers and sisters, let your love be sincere; hate what is evil and cling to want is good. Love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing respect. Do not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit and serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the holy ones; exercise hospitality. Bless those who persecute you, bless them and don’t curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Have the same regard toward one another; do not be haughty but associate with the lowly; do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay anyone evil for evil; be concerned rather for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, on your part, live at peace with all.” What would our world look like if people would live out these simple verses from Paul? It would look like the Trinity! Let’s remember that we are part of a mystery so much greater than our own individual lives. We are part of the Trinity, the family of God. As such we are called to live out this heroic love in grand ways. Let’s do it! St. Charles Mission Statement St. Charles Borromeo, a diverse urban parish of Detroit, is rooted in Christ’s Gospel and Catholic tradition. We strive to build a community of faith through education, worship, and evangelization. We are called to carry on Christ’s ministry to our brothers and sisters, especially the sick and their families, the elderly, youth, and the disabled. With Mary as our example of unconditional love, we strive to welcome everyone to share joyfully in the peace, love and salvation of Jesus Christ. We acknowledge that it is the Holy Spirit who calls and empowers us, who strengthens and renews us, and who gives us the will to continue our mission, until Jesus comes again in glory. Catholic Corner: Triumph “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” Psalm 133:1 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three persons who dwell inside each other, sharing all they are, in a cosmic dance called LOVE. One is “the transcendent source”, one is “the historical embodiment” and one is “the accompanying presence…who will guide future realizations” of LOVE/GOD. What could this mean for us? Since all humans are made in the image and likeness of this Most Holy Trinity, perhaps we must think again about who we are in relationship to everyone else: sharing all we are, seeing through each other’s eyes, recognizing God in each other, helping each other to love. Stewardship Thoughts “But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth...” JOHN 16:13 Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help us know and live the truth. To prepare ourselves, we need to open our hearts to receive this gift before we can give it. Develop a daily prayer routine to ask the Holy Spirit to help guide our thoughts and actions. No-interest Home Repair Loans for Detroit Homeowners The Cathedral Cultural Series Presents: “Poulenc!” Mayor Mike Duggan has announced the Detroit 0% Interest Home Repair Loan Program. It provides $8 million in financing for eligible homeowners looking to replace or patch roofs, replace windows, upgrade plumbing, make electrical repairs, replace the furnace, and address structural or safety issues. The program is directed at Detroit homeowners earning up to 80 percent of the area median income ($54,150 for a family of four), as well as households in designated areas of the city (regardless of their income). The program is designed to help homeowners fix deteriorating properties and help eliminate blight. Loans are available between $5,000 and $25,000 for Detroit homeowners who own and occupy singlefamily homes. Homeowners who own properties with two units, such as duplexes, can be eligible for up to $50,000 as long as they live in one of the units. Loans are paid back over ten years. There is no fee for paying back a loan early. Homeowners pay back only what they borrow. To qualify for a loan, the homeowner must have occupied the home for at least 6 months. Southwest Solutions is one of the nonprofit partners in the program serving as an Intake Center to help eligible homeowners complete the intake forms and start the loan application process. Our Intake Center is at the offices of Southwest Economic Solutions at 2835 Bagley, Suite. 800, Detroit, MI 48216 . Intake forms can be downloaded on the City’s website devoted to the Home Repair Program.
