Region 3 brought 2004 to a
close at the Speed Channel
Dome located adjacent to the
International Motorsports Hall
of Fame on Saturday, January
15th. With over 160 people
from Region 3 in attendance,
the event was a huge success!
Regional awards were given on
the same stage as NASCAR
Hall of Fame inductees have
stood including
Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty
and Bobby Allison. The drivers were very excited to have
this privilege.
The Master of Ceremonies was
North Georgia's announcer,
Jack Slayton.
The National Anthem and God
Bless America was sung by
Memphis Recording Artist
Shelly Ruffin.
The guests also toured the
Motorsports Hall of Fame and
our own Quarter Midget exhibit. The exhibit is in the
process of being updated and
will be something not to miss
when QM racers gather in the
July for the Eastern Grands.
The museum is only 1 1/2
hours drive from the Cumming Track.

From the Desk of the Secretary
I would just like to wish
everyone a very Happy
New Year. I am very excited to start off the
new term with the newly
elected National Board
of Directors and the Regional Directors. We
have only been in office a
couple of weeks and I
have already heard some
great ideas as well as
have seen some great
things already from this
board. We are busy preparing for the National
meeting that will be taking place in a couple of
weeks. It sounds like we
will have a very full
meeting. I would also like
to remind everyone that
if you haven't already
renewed your QMA membership to do so and remember that the grace
period is ONLY to keep
your QMA membership #
in the database so that it
is not given out to a new
member. It is also required this year to send
in a 1x1 photo of each
person over the age of 16
on your membership and
to send in a copy of birth
certificates of anyone
under the age of 18. The
rulebook committee has
been working on the
2005 QMA rulebook by
continuing to find they
gray areas and to work on
those, our goal is to have
the rulebook complete
and printed to send out
along with the Short
Sheet this year. Please
keep checking the QMA
official website for updates, Tawnya is really
working hard to keep all
the members up to date
with what is going on in
your organization. For
everyone that is racing
over the winter, I wish
you luck.

sure they got an article to
me. I can not make the
QR happen without all of
you. Please remember we
will be doing an on-line QR
EVERY month and the
deadline is the 15th. If
your club wants a story
please get it to me by the
deadline along with any
photos I do ask that all
photos come as JPEG
along with a description of
who, what and where.
Please e-mail at

At the national
meeting we will work the
details out of when we will
be doing a printed version.
I am looking for a few
regular by-lines as well, a
where are they now and a
history column, if you
would like to help in these
areas please get a hold of
me.
I see great things ahead
and am looking forward to
working with all of you this
2005 racing season.

Volume 1, Issue 2
Welcome, from the VP
I would like to take this
opportunity to welcome
everyone to the 2005 race
season. I know its a little
early but before we know it
will be back racing a full
schedule for most of us. I
look forward to seeing past
friends and making new
friends. I can honestly say
we as a QMA family for the
most part have a great
time of racing and fellowshipping together.
As we get underway I
would like for all of us to
remember who we are
doing this for and make
sure our kids build some
great memories. Your kids
will either have good
memories or bad, but the
choice is really up to us as
their families as to what
kind of memories they will
have and if they want to do
this with their own Children
when they become parents. One thing to always
remember, you are either
a good witness or a bad
witness with you actions.
On another note please
get involved with your
clubs and regions and try
to help out wherever you
can. Be a volunteer these
are our kids and lets show
them we care.
Please everyone have a
great 2005 race season,
and I hope to see you
around a racetrack somewhere this year. Good
luck to all our 2005
QMA drivers and their
families.

we can improve the safety of
everyone involved in a QMA

am confident that we can
improve on an already great
safety record. My goal, of
course is to have zero accidents but I also realize that
accidents do happen. If we
can reduce the severity and
frequency of incidents we
will be going in the right direction.

place at the national meeting in Las Vegas at the

like to see all tech
personnel from each region to join us for this very
informative session. So
get ready to get the latest
on tech issues in QMA and
how to tech all QMA engines.

Region 1's tracks, Silver
City in Meriden, CT and
Little T in Thompson, CT
are both highly competitive
tracks. Car counts average
150-170 cars weekly.
We have large Honda
classes, averaging 35 for
Sr Hondas & 25 for the
Hvy 160's. We also have
highly competitive Deco
classes. Many of our Region 1 families travel extensively and they do well
wherever they go.
The Eastern Grands at
Thompson last year went
pretty smoothly with great
weather and over 700
cars. It was nice to see the
best talent from all over
the country show up.
These young guns showed
that NASCAR has nothing
over us, and our shows
are free! We are looking
forward to possibly having
new classes and engine
platforms approved by
QMA. Possibilities include a Honda GX200, the
Briggs World Formula 200,
and the Yamaha 200. The
older kids want to go faster
and hopefully these new
classes will keep them in
quarter midgets longer,
as this is one of the main
issues facing QMA today.
Auto Racing News to do a
1/4 Midget racing article
each week. You can also
email Kevin on our Region
Two Web site.
If anyone has any concerns or problems, please
follow the chain of command and contact your
Club President who will be
glad to answer any questions or find out the answer.
See everyone soon!

There's not much outdoor
racing going on in Region 6
due to the weather right now.
The clubs are preparing their
racing schedules for 2005.
Topeka is planning to
have their first shoot-out series with Tulsa this year.
Racing on Saturday nights
during the month of August.
San Antonio and Austin have
their shoot-outs already established. Topeka will also
host another specialty race
this season called "Race on

get racers from the east and
west sectors to come and race
at our beautiful facilities
on June 11th & 12th. Topeka
is working on soft walls for
our track this winter and hoping to have them completed

Not much is happening in
Region 9 as we are in our wet
season and our Region and
Clubs are only wishing for
summer to get here so we can
get out on the track.
The Region did hold its annual January Region Meeting
to discuss the RCPS and our
Region Format for the year.
It was a very productive
meeting. Even with some
slippery roads from some
snow, the Region Meeting
was well attended by all six
of our clubs. I would like to
thank them all for their time
and commitment.
I am personally looking forward to the National Meeting
in February. They are always
an interesting time. With a
new National Board, and a
couple new Region Directors,
we should have some very productive days and can keep
moving QMA forward. I think
there will be some good discussions on ways to improve and
build QMA. Any QMA member who has not attended a
National Meeting should think
about attending one, just to see
how QMA rules are made,
changed, amended, etc.
Region 9 hopes everyone has a
safe and healthy 2005. Some
Regions are lucky enough to be
racing already. Please have a
lot of fun. QMA stresses the
family aspect of our sport.
That is what is great about it.
The time we get to spend
with our family. Keep that
spirit alive and just go racing
to have fun.
Region 9 will keep reminding you that the 2005 Western Grands are being held in
Portland Oregon. If you

gives both clubs time to address track maintenance and
any updating of club and region series rules.
The Region board would
like to encourage all of our

Changes can only take place
if the members take the time
to let the Board know what
you would like changed.
This is true for your club,
your region and your national

From Region 13,
2004 was an exciting
year of quarter midget
racing with strong competition throughout Florida. Some of the excitement included the establishment of the "Florida
Cup Series" with monthly
races at different tracks
in Florida. Mid-Florida
QMRA's move to it's

was born. Tampa Bay
QMRA held their first

the Eastern and Dirt
Grands. We dodged and
helped each other through

summer. New Smyrna
held several QMA Promo
days and we ended the
year with the 46th Annual
Tangerine at MidFlorida.
2005 started without rest with the
largest quarter
midget race ever for
New Smyrna QMRA
as they hosted the

said goodbye to some of
our most experienced
quarter midget drivers as
they retire. Keith and
Maureen Abbott have
done so much for quarter
midget racing in Florida
and throughout the country that there would be
no way to list it all or
adequately thank them
for the hours of service
they have given to the
sport. Kory Abbott,
their youngest driver is
retiring after 11 years of
racing.
Cory Stoekel is another retiring driver that
with his departure ends
New Smyrna President,
Bob Stoekel's time in
that position. Bob and
and his vision for New
Smyrna has helped the
club grow and brought
many families to the sport
throughout the years.
We also have to say
goodbye to Sam Green and
his father Ron and the
oldest driver of Hagner
Racing, Michael Hagner. All of these young
men have been a positive
influence on the younger
drivers and we look forward to seeing them at
the track as handlers for
other drivers or a younger
brother.
Thank you all for your

year, some of them include: Implement a coordinated race schedule for
the tracks in Florida, support our neighbors to the
north in Region 3 and

for the Eastern Grands,
plan and develop a permanent home for South Florida QMA, increase the
local membership by hosting more QMA Promotion
days and most important,
have a great year racing
and enjoy the time we are
able to spend with our
kids.
The first day started out
sunny and warm with some
great racing underway. Unfortunately the sea breeze
brought in the clouds and
rain by late afternoon. The
three-hour rain delay prevented any of the lower
mains to be run with only
the heat races completed
on the first day. With thirtynine races to complete on
the final day the amount of
laps per race were shortened and the program was
completed by 9:00pm.
With the Tangerine and
the New Smyrna 500,
there was plenty of racing
here in Region 13 this last
week of 2004.
The New Smyrna Board of
Directors and their members would like to thank
everyone for their participation, patience and help
in order to make this a
very successful event.

Mid Florida QMRA hosted the 46th Tangerine Invitational Winter Nationals at their temporary track
located at Shapres Speedway in Brevard County.
The event went smoothly considering this location
has never held an event this large. The weather
started out cool and wet but warmed up to the beautiful Florida sunshine with temperatures reaching the
70’
sbyt

heweek.
The format for the Tangerine is one that allows a
driver quite a bit of track time with points given for
qualifying, and two heat races. The total number of
points determines where a driver would start in the
mains. This year over 200 cars came to compete at this
event, many were from out of town so this format plus practice
gave the driver and hander a chance to get familiar with the
track.
The spectators watching from the bleachers were on the edge
of their seats as they watched cars go three wide down the
long straight-aways and into the turns knowing only one car
would come out ahead. There were the normal crashes and
tires flying but most cars were able to get back out to finish the
races due to the wall being so far away from the outside of the
track.
The Mid Florida Board of Directors and Members as well as
Region 13 would like to thank those families who came down
to race and for your continued support with the tradition of
quarter midget racing in Florida. We welcome you back for
the 47th Tangerine Invitational in 2005

2004 New Smyrna Banquet
Honors Drivers
By Terri Sullivant
What a way to end a great season of racing! The banquet committee for Little New Smyrna
QMRA did an outstanding job this
past weekend hosting the 2004
Awards Banquet at the Daytona
Beach Plaza Resort and Spa.
With close to 300 people attending, the room was filled with tables set with black and white
checkered tablecloths with green,
red, yellow and white balloons
floating in the air. The trophies
were all lined up in a row in front
for everyone to see and looked
impressive as they glistened under the lights.
The festivities began with our
New Smyrna tradition of standing
for the national anthem. A video
was shown with pictures and music of our drivers racing at various
events this past year. It ended
with a special tribute to Bob
Stoekel, for his ongoing dedicat

President and Vice President for
the past 3 years.
The Banquet Committee, the outgoing 2004 Board and incoming
2005 NSQMRA Board were all
recognized with plaques and or
jackets. With the help of our special Friday night Race Announcer,
Tom Gray the real presentations
began with the announcement of
our novice drivers and concluded
with the Heavy GX 160 class.
Several door prizes were given
throughout the afternoon with
congratulations to Tony Pelican
for winning the Richard Petty Ride
Along, Ralph Miller and Tony Pelican won Air Compressors, Paul
Gertsch Jr. and Jordan Snipes
names were call to win a air tank
as well as a tool kit and shop
lights. Last but not least Dallas
Gentry went home with her own
beach chair.
The banquet festivities concluded
with special rings given to our
retiring drivers, Kory Abbott, Sam
Green, Michael Hagner and Cory
Stoekel. Not only were these drivers retiring so were their parents.
A special memory book was given
to Keith and Maureen Abbott containing years of special pictures
from their first driver, son Kevin,
on through to Kimberly, Kyle and
finishing with Kory. Another retiring parent was our own President, Bob Stoekel. With tears and
heavy hearts 2005 President Betty
Gertsch presented Bob with a
special Mark Martin, Viagra racing jacket autographed by Mark.
Once again it was a great way to
end the 2004 season and to start
getting ready for 2005!
