Professional qualifications
Fellow of the Institute of Chartered
Foresters
1973 – 1974 Fountain Forestry Ltd, Management Trainee
I was involved in all aspects of forestry in Devon and Cornwall, as
well as contract fencing, tree surgery and investment appraisal.
1974 – 1980 Fountain Forestry Ltd, Area Forester
I was responsible for 6000 ha of mainly young forestry schemes
in South Scotland. Planting, ploughing and drainage amounted
to some 500 hectares per year.
1980-1986 Mitchell Trust & Cheviot Forestry Consultants Ltd
Originally the job started as forest manager at Kyloe wood, a 400
ha wood in Northumberland of international silvicultural interest.
DELFA, a local forestry co-operative with a sawmill, was a joint
employer. Financial pressures were such that I concentrated on
outside work for about half my time. This was successful and in
1986, when Kyloe wood was sold, Cheviot Forestry Consultants
Ltd was viable in its own right and wholly owned by me. Savills,
an international firm of property agents, purchased my business
in 1986.
1986-1988 FPD Savills Plc
I was mainly involved in the agency from the Edinburgh office.
Although all sides worked very hard, the client base did not
expand and it was agreed that the previous working arrangement
was better. I left Savills in 1988 to start Border Consultants. I
work closely with Savills and other firms of land-agents on many
projects.
1988 – present Border Consultants (Forestry) Ltd
Border Consultants is now my professional life and likely to
remain so. We manage some 12,000 hectares of forestry. We
have many prize-winning woodlands under our management, in
particular the Dulverton Flagon in 1992. Border Consultants is the
only management company to have achieved 3 Centres of
Excellence. We are experienced in Environmental Assessments
and are responsible for the first large upland broadleaf

won the contract to prepare the WGS and ES for the 1,200 ha
Royal Scottish Forestry Society Millennium Forest on the shores
of Loch Lomond and managed the project for 10 years. We
manage woodland to FSC standard.
1997 – 2012 Chairman of KMS Baltics
Fest Forest
Festil Forest
Border Consultants
Are a group of companies under the umbrella
KMS Baltics
At present I am managing KMS Baltics, which is an umbrella
name for the independent forest and property management
companies, which provide investments in the UK, Romania,
Estonia and Latvia. I have briefly plotted the history below:
In 1997 I established Fest-Forest in Estonia, which provides
forest management for investment. We now manage 50 000 ha
and employ 23 staff, including Fest-Forest Latvija, which I set up
in 2003. Fest-Forest provides property investment management
services to global clients, both commercial and private investors.
In 2007 I set up Festil-forest management company with my
partner Albert Serban. Festil-forest now manages 7,000 ha in
Romania and has its own management unit (Ocolul Cilvic).
2012 – present Managing Director of HD FestForest
(HD FF is the new company, following the merger of
HedeBaltic and Fest-Forest)
My current role involves close working with Michael Glud,
Chairman of HD FF, to develop this new company as it continues
to grow and to ensure that services to clients remain of the
highest quality.
