14 years after the original groundbreaking of Temple Beth Am, many of us gathered outside on a
beautiful Sunday for a new groundbreaking. As I was standing between the beam (that we later
signed) and the congregation, I was overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude. I had prepared a
different message for the occasion, but the next day I sat to write a blessing that expresses those
feelings:
Baruch Atah Adonai, Blessed are you God for:
1. Blessing and guarding us.
2. Guiding and helping a small number of TBA members to build a beautiful synagogue. Having an
impressive building inspired us and many prospective members to become part of TBA. In the hundreds
of times when I’ve had the pleasure of showing the building to those who never saw it before, I heard
time and again: “I cannot believe that a place like this exists in a small town like Jupiter.”
3. Sending our way members who are naturally loving, warm and welcoming. We will never be satisfied
with the hospitality we offer as we constantly strive to be better.
4. Blessing us with generous members who believe in the future of the Jewish people and the role of TBA in
ensuring our continuity. The majority of our original benefactors attended the ceremony. They witnessed
their original investment bearing fruit faster than they had expected. They were proud and happy even
though their tangible reward was the opportunity to give another major gift.
5. Bold leaders who are not afraid to make difficult decisions, take risks and do all in their power to make
TBA thrive. When the tendency of many temples’ boards is to preserve the “old,” our leaders respect the
“old” but when facing a new, out of the box idea their response is, “How can we make it happen?”
6. Instilling the spirit of voluntarism in our member’s hearts. We have a small paid staff and many activities.
What makes it possible is the hard work of hundreds of volunteers.
7. Bringing together talented, dedicated and hardworking staff who work together as a team to care for the
needs of the members of TBA and the Jewish people of our community.
8. Being surrounded by so many young families and children from preschool age to high school. Because of
them, our building is always full of life, laughter and optimism.
9. Blessing us with good neighbors such as the two churches across the road, St. Peter Catholic Church and
JupiterFirst Church. Although our theologies are different, our core values and our desire to do God’s will
unite us.
10. Blessing me and my family with 10 of the most beautiful years of our lives in this special place. I
couldn’t have asked for a better congregation to serve. Thank you all for sharing your lives with us and
for being our family.
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

As we complete areas of construction, Scribes, flyers and other communications will begin to
utilize the names of those dedicating that naming opportunity. Some of the areas are being
rededicated since the renovation in those areas is extensive. However, we will continue to
recognize the prior dedication with an appropriate plaque for the Al & Fran Newman Social Hall,
Jack & Yvonne (Bobby) Barr Chapel and the Sandquist Family Lobby. There are still other
significant dedication opportunities available, in addition to those already taken (see below).

PURIM CELEBRATION - March 25th

FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF ENGAGEMENT,
PROGRAMMING & MEMBERSHIP
Carol Sleeper
Once again we will be celebrating the 2nd night of Passover here at Temple Beth Am with an interactive Service led by
Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, and Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer. And as we have been doing for the past sever al
years there will also be a Pot Luck Seder dinner. The committee is working hard on making the Seder on Saturday
night, April 23rd at 6:00pm feel like you ar e in your own home with your family. It’s important to have the feeling
and sense of community. Once you sign up to attend the 2nd night Seder you will receive a phone call about what you
will need to bring. Please see the flyer on page 14 to sign up, and don’t forget that your payment is your reservation.
Due to the Chidush renovations we will only be able to accommodate a limited amount of people, so remember to send
in your reservations as soon as possible.
If you have any questions about the Seder, please feel free to contact me or another member of the committee. They
are Leona Holland, Arline Slifkin, Bruce Cohen, Nanci Hochman, CK Tenenbaum, Eric Weiner, John Marzina,
and myself, Carol Sleeper.
Temple Beth Am is now working with other houses of worship in Jupiter and Tequesta to collect food for the Store
House Food Pantry located on Center Street in Jupiter and run by the Christian F amily Church. F or more
information please read the article on page 12 by Robin Schafler and Marcy Isdaner.
At Passover most Jews know that they should be eating Matzah, which is unleavened bread, symbolizing the Exodus
from Eqypt, which happened so quickly there was no time for the bread that had been baked to rise. But did you know
that the opposite of Matzah is Chametz, dough which is left out long enough to ferment and rise. It is considered a
mitzvah to rid our homes of Chametz and consume only Matzah for the duration of the eight days of Passover. If you
are observing this, we ask that you donate any unopened pasta, cereal, and canned foods to go to the Store House Food
Pantry. Even if you don’t rid your home of Chametz you can still do a mitzvah and bring in the above mentioned food
items. All donations will go directly to families who are in need. As Jews we are responsible for repairing the world or
“tikkun olam”. Help us feed the hungry by donating these non-perishable food items. This effort will enable us to help
those in our community who are in need.
“Let All Who are Hungry Come & Eat”

Please donate your Chametz
for the Store House food
pantry
Passover Fact:
The world’s largest matzah ball was made in the heart of New York City in 2009. Chef Anthony Sylvestry managed to
make a matzah ball measuring 22.9” wide and weighing 267 lbs! The giant Passover creation was made to raise money
for a New York Knicks vs. Tel Aviv Maccabi charity basketball game & money raised from the game went to Migdal
Ohr, an orphanage in Northern Israel.
We can guarantee that the Matzah balls at the 2nd night Seder won’t be that large! Hope to see you there.
Wishing you and your family Chag Sameach and a Happy Pesach!

BOOK CLUB
Thanks to all who attended the March Book Club meeting. The discussion of Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee was
interesting and enjoyable.
Our next meeting is on MONDAY APRIL 4th at 10:30am at the synagogue when we will be discussing Boston
Girl by Anita Diamant:
Anita Diamant’s “vivid, affectionate portrait of American womanhood” (Los Angeles Times), follows the life of one
woman, Addie Baum, through a period of dramatic change. Addie is The Boston Girl, the spirited daughter of an
immigrant Jewish family, born in 1900 to parents who were unprepared for America and its effect on their three
daughters. Growing up in the North End of Boston, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie’s intelligence
and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine—a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and
new opportunities for women. Addie wants to finish high school and dreams of going to college. She wants a career
and to find true love. From the one-room tenement apartment she shared with her parents and two sisters, to the
library group for girls she joins at a neighborhood settlement house, to her first disastrous love affair, to finding the
love of her life, eighty-five-year-old Addie recounts her adventures with humor and compassion for the naïve girl she
once was.
We will be having lunch after our book discussion at Suzy-Q’s Diner, 225 Chimney Cor ner Lane, #1001, Militar y
Trail between University Drive and Donald Ross Road.
Please RSVP (ediewolf@gmail.com or 443-223-9729) and let me know whether you plan on coming to the book
discussion AND whether you plan to join us for lunch afterwards.
Note: I have sent out a list of books to consider for our Book Club next year. If you have not received this list, please
let me know.
Thanks,
Edie

MEN’S CLUB SCRIBBLES
Jack Tenenbaum, President
On March 13, the Temple held its annual Purim Carnival, and as usual, the Men's Club provided volunteers who
grilled, served, and sold the hotdogs and hamburgers. Thank you chefs John Marzina and Eric Weiner, Bruce
Cohen, Joe Mitchell, Mel Wolfe, Gideon Kroyter, Stu Fierman, Bruce Starr, Lou Wolfson and Brad Roffer.
Due to the response of our last dining out at Brio, we held another one on March 19th at 6:30pm. Once again
complimentary coffee was arranged and the Men's Club supplied a cake for dessert. The format was simple - order
what you want, and pay for it. The turnout was great, about 50 people attended.
This summer, during the slow season, the Men's Club and Sisterhood will once again be sponsoring monthly dining
out events at various venues on a monthly basis. The usual format will be used, order what you want and pay for it.
Like last year, we see no reason that there should not be opportunities for members of the congregation to get
together and enjoy each other's company. Look for announcements in the Scribe, weekly emails from the Temple,
and Friday night announcements.
We are also planning a trip to a Marlins game that will include tickets and transportation. It will be very much like
the trip that we took to see a Dolphins game last fall. A tour type bus will pick us up from the Temple Beth Am
parking lot, take us to the game where we have seats in a block, and then take us back to the Temple. Because there
are many more baseball games during the season, our choices are increased. We will pick the best game available,
and announce the opportunity this spring or early summer, depending on the game chosen. Watch for details in the
Scribe and in the weekly email blasts, Friday night announcements, and flyers in the Temple lobby.
In this election year, the Men's Club has planned a Sunday morning breakfast with a speaker from the League of
Women Voters to explain the var ious amendments that ar e sur e to appear on the ballot. The speaker will not
discuss any of the candidates, Democrat, Republican, or Independent, but only the meaning and ramifications of the
ballot questions. This breakfast program, which also includes lox and bagels, will take place on September 11, 2016
at 9:30am in the Temple Social Hall. Mar k your calendar s.
In planning events for next year, we will offer the congregation different opportunities for participation and fun. The
Men's Club is developing a questionnaire that will be sent to members of the congregation to help us improve our
programs. Please take a minute or two when you get the questionnaire to fill it out and send it back. This feedback is
extremely important.
If you have comments or suggestions, please feel free to call me at 561-744-3010, or email me at:

Friday, April 29, 2016 at 10:00am
Yizkor Services are done 4 times a year: the last day of Passover, Shavuot, Yom
Kippur and Shemini Atzeret. This special Service is our way of remembering and
praying for our departed loved ones. The Yizkor prayers are only permitted to be
recited in the presence of others, in a community of other Jews. If you have loved
ones who have passed away and you wish to say Yizkor for them, then please join
us on April 29th for this Service.

SISTERHOOD SCOOP
Realizing that you will read this after the first day of Spring, March 20, I thought I would share how I know when
the seasons change…which, of course, is a challenge here in Florida!
I know when it is winter because my neighbor wears a jacket with shorts, tee shirt and flip flops. He alerts me to
spring as he is wearing a sweater with shorts, tee shirt, and flip flops. Summer is easy as he wears shorts, a tee
shirt and flip flops and autumn calls for a very thin sweater, shorts, tee shirt and flip flops. In this very scientific
way, I am able to gauge the seasons!
Because Sisterhood’s last event, the Healing Drum Circle, took place in late February, I was not able to report that
all who attended enjoyed themselves. We thank Alfredo for getting the goodies ready for our hungry attendees and
Sue Freedland for buying the delicious little quiches. We had 15 men and women attend this event and tr uly
regret having not publicizing it better. It was terrific!
Your Sisterhood Board is actively planning events for this next calendar year, and we will definitely arrange some
for spring and summer events too, so stay tuned to your email for both the weekly TBA information blast on
Wednesdays and for Sisterhood emails and event flyers.
We had 9 members attend our March 10 Open Planning Meeting and about 5 more members emailed and phoned
in their ideas. A number of terrific new events for our membership were proposed. We expect to get the calendar
of events to you within the next month or so. If you were not able to attend the March 10 Planning Meeting and
have an idea for an event, please contact Maril Levy at maril@family-levy.com or phone her at 561-249-6046.
Be happy, it’s Adar! We were pleased to support the TBA Purim Carnival this year, on March 13. Sisterhood
again donated funds for the Pony Rides, and many of our members volunteered to help with games and activities.
Lots of happy, smiling faces all around.
Sisterhood is happy to welcome new Board members Nanci Hochman and Linda Wolfe. They and we are looking
forward to working with and for you. We are sad to see Cathy Yonkers step down from our Board but we thank
her for her time and talent and we wish her r’fuah sh’leimah.
Many of you will be leaving the area soon for your summer homes, and we want to wish you a safe trip. We value
your input whether from near or far, so please stay in touch. And, please don’t forget to mail back your 2016-2017
Sisterhood registration form and check for next season. (It will be mailed to you in early June.)
Kulanu!

THE BRCA GENE MUTATION
Everyone faces a risk of cancer; however, some individuals may be at higher risk based on their family history and/
or ethnic background. One in 40 individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent is a carrier of a BRCA mutation,
increasing their risk of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) Syndrome. This means that individuals in
the Jewish population are ten times more likely to carry these mutations than the general population.
The Center For Jewish Genetics, Chicago www.jewishgenetics.org
Our Temple member, Amy Byer Shainman, has been working on the below documentary for 2 years. (She is
also in it, as she says, “for a minute or two.”) The film has been nominated for Best Documentary at the

feature length documentary takes us through the lives of women...and men dealing with genetic
mutations (BRCA 1 and 2) and their related hereditary cancers. We meet the doctors and their patients
who make the tough decisions on whether to have preventative surgeries or not. Director Alan M.

is $300 per student – significantly subsidized by Jewish Federation’s OneWorld initiative – and includes
airfare, housing and meals. Students who participate will receive 30 community service hours. Space is limited
to 16 students – so sign up soon! There are scholarship opportunities available for those who qualify. Deadline
for registration is Friday, April 22, 2016.
This is the inaugural community service opportunity for JTI’s Project Tikvah (Hebrew for “hope”), a hands-on
service program for Palm Beach County teens, aimed at making a lasting impact by serving those in need. By
connecting with others and sharing life experiences, teens will meet new friends, connect with new
communities, and help Federation change the world for the better through service.
To register, visit jtipalmbeach.org (registration cost is $50). For more information, contact Matt Vogel at
561.242.6653 or matthew.vogel@jewishpalmbeach.org.

Is your Child Resourceful?
Resourcefulness, the ability to meet challenges in a variety of ways, is a by-product of creative intelligence.
As children develop resourcefulness, they learn to trust their instincts and unique abilities. They acquire a
positive attitude toward problem solving. Resourceful children mature into confident and industrious people.
Just as important, they tap into the multitude of joys life has to offer.
If we raise children brave enough to be creative, we bestow a gift money can’t buy.
So apply the following tips and seed your child’s imagination. Enjoy the bloom, and may the harvest be
unending. Welcome to Spring!
Some Tips for Encouraging Creativity
• Encourage curiosity and seeking answers. One of the best ways parents can respond to a child’s questions is by
saying, “I don’t know. How could we find the answer?”
• Don’t stifle and numb creativity with too many manufactured toys. Resist buying kids every accessory marketed
with the latest movie or cartoon character so resourcefulness will have room to grow. Dolls are nifty, but kids
don’t stretch their imagination when we supply every dress and play prop. Pre-assembled kits rob kids of
chances to think on their own.
• Encourage exploration
• Avoid shaming or embarrassing children who experiment through trial and error. Don’t say: “What in the
WORLD were you thinking of?” Instead, offer support, “If that didn’t work, try something else; you’ll get it.”
Encourage reasonable risk taking that fuels creativity.
• Show respect for creative effort. Display children’s stories or artwork on refrigerators and bulletin boards. Kids
love to see their labors of love at their parents’ workplaces, too.
• Facilitate play; don’t dictate it. Kids get a big boost from parents’ getting on the floor and really playing with
them. During play follow your child’s lead. Play should be a dance between you, not a concert with you as sole
conductor.
The Week of the Young Child™ is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education
of Young Children (NAEYC). The purpose of the Week of the Young Child™ is to focus public attention on the
needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet
those needs. The 2016 Week of the Young Child™ is April 11-15 and the themes are as follows:
Music Monday: Thr ough music, childr en develop math, language and liter acy skills.
Healthy Eating and Fitness Tuesday: Our One Schooler s will lear n about exer cise and healthy eating as
we celebrate with Taco Tuesday!
Work Together Wednesday: As we build together , we will explor e math and science concepts, as well
as social and literacy skills.
Artsy Thursday: We will develop cr eativity, social and fine motor skills with open-ended art projects.
Family Friday: We will celebr ate the unique r ole that families play in our childr en ’s learning and
development.

Celebrating Passover: One of the most impor tant Mitzvot (good deed) that we may do at Passover is r e-telling
of the story. This is our history! In the Torah it says, “You shall tell your children on that day saying, ‘this is
because what God did for ME when I came out of Egypt’ (Exodus 13:8).” The Passover story is told four times
during the Seder. There are plenty of wonderful resources for telling the story, so the focus will be to make the story
meaningful to your children. Read the story from a children’s book. Find a Haggadah (the narrative of the story of
the Exodus) that is child-friendly. Tell the story with puppets or props. Make a special Passover food with your
child. Please join us for our One School Passover Celebration on Wednesday, April 20th at 9:00am. We will have a
Passover breakfast and sing Passover songs in our classrooms

Busch Wildlife Visits The One School
The Busch Wildlife Sanctuary’s wildlife rescue and rehabilitation program provides comprehensive
medical care to over 5,000 sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals each year. The ultimate goal of
the Sanctuary’s rehabilitation efforts is to return recovered patients to their natural habitats so they can
become an integral part of the environment once again. Busch Wildlife came to The One School in
March and introduced us to several Florida rescued animals.
Our school donated paper towels, plastic bags and sanitizer to the shelter for the animals.

B’NEI MITZVAH OF
GABRIEL & DANIEL GORMEZANO
Our pride is doubled as we announce that our sons, Gabriel and Daniel Gormezano, will
be called to the Torah as B’nei Mitzvah on April 2nd, 2016.
Gabe is an 8th grade honor roll student in the Pre-Law Academy at Independence Middle
School. He is a member of the Science, Engineering, Computer, Math and Enrichment
Club and National Junior Honor Society. Gabe’s interests are varied and include math,
pizza, building computers, reality TV and of course Smash Bros.
Dan is in 7th grade. He is also an honor roll student in the Pre-Medical Academy at IMS. He is a member of the
Science, Engineering, Computer, Math and Enrichment Club, is very artistic, creative with a love of drawing,
and has a soft spot in his heart for furry animals. He will never turn down an opportunity to go fishing unless he
is playing Smash Bros.
Their Mitzvah project was an opportunity to help US military families,
relocated overseas, with a little “coupon love”. The US base commissaries
will accept US manufacturer coupons, but families have no way of getting
them. Military Family Coupons project accepts current and expired
coupons to help the soldiers and their families. Over the last year, Gabe
and Dan, with a little help from their friends, were able to gather, sort and
send almost $7,000 in savings to our service men and women abroad.
We are so proud of Gabe and Dan for their journey to affirm their
connection with Judaism and our traditions. As they approach this
important milestone, we want to thank everyone who has helped develop
their Jewish identities. Special thanks to Rabbi Alon for defining our place
in a modern Jewish community. To Brett and Cantor Jessica, for their
patience and leadership, as Gabe and Dan’s view of Judaism is forever
linked to you. Skype would not be the same without Sherrie Kesselman
and Debbie Baseman. Finally, Todah to everyone who has been a part of
their lives at TBA and for embracing them in the comfort and sense of
family only a synagogue brings.
Dyann and Kyle Gormezano

BAR MITZVAH OF
NOAH PINCUS
We joyfully announce that our son, Noah Alexander Pincus, will be called to the
Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 9, 2016.
Noah is a 7th grade honor roll student in the Pre-finance academy at Duncan
Middle School. Noah loves playing basketball. In his free time, he enjoys
fishing, skim-boarding at the beach, hanging out with friends and playing more
basketball!
Noah chose to do different Acts of Kindness for his Mitzvah project. He volunteers his time around the
community helping and assisting charities and sport groups, like The Race for Life Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society and PBGYAA-Baseball.
We are so proud of Noah and can’t wait to celebrate his special day. Many thanks to Rabbi Alon, Brett Tancer,
Cantor Jessica and all the teachers and staff at Temple Beth Am on preparing Noah for this day.

BAR MITZVAH OF
ADAM CHERENSON
It is with great pride and joy that we announce our son, Adam Cherenson, will be
called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 16, 2016.
Adam is a seventh grade honor roll student at Independence Middle School, where he is in the Pre-Medical
Honors Academy and a member of the IMS news team. Adam also played intramural Ping Pong and was the
IMS champion this season. Adam is an accomplished tennis player. He is a member of the junior team at
Eastpointe Country Club and regularly competes in both USTA and recreational tournaments.
Adam’s mitzvah project was to volunteer as a junior tennis coach. He helps coach younger students and older
beginners. Adam aspires to be a coach in the future and to help bring the sport of tennis to kids who otherwise
may not be able to afford access to coaches, lessons or facilities.
We would like to thank everyone who helped Adam prepare for his Bar Mitzvah, including Brett Tancer, Rabbi
Alon, Cantor Jessica, Sherrie Kesselman and all of his religious school teachers. We would also like to thank
Paula Deakter and his preschool teachers at The One School, where Adam began his Jewish Education.
Along with his sister, Alexandra, family and close friends, we look forward to celebrating his momentous
occasion!

BAR MITZVAH OF
ETHAN LEVITT
It is with great pride and joy as we announce that our son Ethan Henry will be
called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on April 30, 2016.
Ethan is a dedicated seventh grader, morning news anchor and member of the
Pre-Law Academy at Independence Middle School. When not preparing for a
trial, Ethan spends his time with the Performance Band at the School of Rock
where he practices his guitar riffs, bass licks and drum solos. He also enjoys
throwing the football around with his dad, wrestling with our dog Charli,
playing tennis, hover boarding and gaming on the Xbox with his friends.
For Ethan’s mitzvah project he is raising funds for the Rock School
Scholarship Fund by designing, creating and selling packs of greeting cards.
The funds Ethan raises will be used to help low income children in our community attend the School of Rock,
North Palm Beach with him.
We would like to thank Rabbi Alon, Brett Tancer, Cantor Jessica, and all of the teachers at Temple Beth Am for
helping Ethan prepare for this special day.
We are very proud of Ethan for working so diligently and look forward to “rocking” this momentous occasion
with all of our family, friends and congregants.
