Irvine Nature Center / Annual Report 2009 G ROWING G REEN Irvine Nature Center is a non-profit environmental education organization whose mission is to inspire appreciation and respect for the natural world, to increase awareness of environmental issues, and to encourage individuals to sustain Earth’s ecosystem. Dear Members and Friends, Much like that of a plant, the life of a child must be watered, fed, nurtured and in many cases exposed to the light of the sun. Our hope, at Irvine Nature Center, is that we give urban youth learning opportunities in environmental education that will help them grow their own gardens of experience and greener living through our Urban Education Program, Schoolyard Discovery. For the last 16 years (nearly half of Irvine’s history), the program has been providing these transformative experiences to Baltimore City public schools free of charge. During the school year, we partner inner Baltimore City high schools with neighboring elementary schools and we train the highschoolers on how to teach third grade students natural science lessons on their schoolyard. These students are often surprised that amidst blacktop and asphalt, nature does in fact exist in their schoolyards and are excited to get involved in improvement projects like butterfly and rain gardens. Each summer, we run a Summer Fellowship Program for which we employ Baltimore City high school students to be paid to work full time for 6 weeks doing research projects, maintaining gardens at the Baltimore City schools that were planted during the school year, team building and leadership skills. One of their most important duties is passing the knowledge on that they have acquired by teaching children at Baltimore City recreation centers over the summer. In addition to the beauty that the program leaves in its wake as evidenced in the amazing gardens our children plant, we have discovered that a flowering takes place in the heart of each child. They discover the beauty of the sense of accomplishment they feel after conquering the fear of canoeing, or learning the many species of insects and animals who inhabit the soil they till or teaching a younger child to value the process of growing a seed. Many of the high school students and summer fellows discover that this program has left an indelible mark. They go back to their neighborhoods empowered to convince their friends to recycle, compost, and become better stewards of Earth. Others discover this program has prepared them for the newly emergent green collar workforce, and they begin exploring career options in environmental education. This summer we produced a video of our Urban Education Program. We asked our staff members, program participants and school administrators to tell the story of Schoolyard Discovery through their eyes – what makes our program different? What impact has the program had on their lives, and why is it important for the program to continue? As you read their words, we invite you to consider their answers. Then we invite you to create your own. Ask yourself – what is the value of teaching a child to connect with the natural world so closely, that he or she wants to protect and preserve the environment? And finally what is the value of securing a program that teaches children from Baltimore City to grow green? Sincerely, Angus Burton President Baltimore City Educators 1.a a “I believe as educators we have a responsibility to the whole child, and there’s more to education than just the ABC’s and the 123’s. That we need to provide opportunities and experiences for children so that they can make good choices in the future in terms of ‘What I want to be in life, what my interests might be that I want to pursue’ because they have had exposure and that exposure has left the walls of the classroom. Irvine has [created] a very enriching partnership [here]. These kinds of partnerships are essential – they become the lifeblood of a school. And when we look at our Maryland State Assessments, when children are engaged in academic opportunities that make sense, the motivation is there to learn even more.” 1.b 1.c b Irvine Nature Center’s Urban Education Program was established in 1993. Now known as Schoolyard Discovery, this unique program was developed to introduce Baltimore City Public School students to the wonders of the natural world. The program is offered at no cost to participating schools. Matthew Riley, Principal Cross Country Elementary/Middle School Kim Glover-Spencer, Enrichment Coordinator Cross Country Elementary/Middle School “The [children] love that the program is hands on, physical, outside. They really appreciate the part of their day where they can be outside and doing something and then see the transformation, where a plot of grass has transformed into something beautiful, and they can observe the butterflies and all of the habitat that comes as a result of it being planted. They feel like ‘I did this, I made this happen, I was part of changing the complexion of the school.’” c Rosilind Davis, Teacher Western High School “The Schoolyard Discovery Program is a fantastic program. It was brought to my attention by a science teacher at the school who thought it would benefit my students at the Teacher Academy who are required to complete a certain number of hours in an internship. These young ladies are aspiring to enter into the field of education. So this is an opportunity for them to get hands on experience in working with students.” Summer Fellows d J’Brea Fain, 2009 Summer Fellow Mergenthaler High School “We do a lot. On Mondays we actually do water quality. So we go out to different bodies of water, learn about the quality, we test pH, and what type of animals and wildlife we see, and that basically tells us the condition of the water. And on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays we do gardening working at different schools in the afternoons. We do our research work with the Chesapeake Bay, and we go out to do experiments. On Fridays, those are the days that we go to the recreation centers and work with children. It’s actually a wonderful experience – [the kids] are like really into it. They’re focused and willing to learn the things that we teach them.” e In the Summer 2009, 10 high school student fellows and 323 elementary school-aged students at Baltimore City recreation centers participated in the program. Shawn Jones,, Jr., 2009 Summer Fellow Baltimore Polytechnic Institute 2.d “I’m learning how to teach, be patient with children, how to garden and take care of my environment, and how nature affects us all. If we help support Irvine, maybe we could get Baltimore City and possibly the United States to start taking care of the environment more and we could kind of spread it throughout the world.” 2.e f Kelsie Hall, 2009 Summer Fellow Digital Harbor High School “Coming to Irvine and learning everything that I have has changed the way I am in everyday life. I won’t litter. If I have trash and no trash can, I’ll hold [the trash] in my purse until I get home. I’m the same way with my friends – I’ll take their bottles home or take them to work so they can be recycled. I just don’t want to make the planet a trashy place anymore – I want it to be beautiful and I really want to start a garden in my backyard. It changes your perspective on things once you really understand nature. 2.f Irvine Staff There were 15 schools participating during the 2008-09 school year. Four gardens were installed at 6 elementary schools as a part of the program, and currently there are 80 gardens and 293 trees planted at 12 different schools. a Kristy Street, Director of Urban Education Irvine Nature Center “I think with education in general, the thought is always: if you’re going to make a change, you have to make an impact on the generation coming up. You have to teach them something they don’t know, so that they can make a difference. But what we see, particularly with the Summer Fellowship, is that it is a job and they’re learning that they can do more than clean up a stream once a month – they can make this their career path. Whether it’s a classic ‘green’ job like an environmental educator, or designer of solar panels, or its working at an accounting firm and teaching the firm to be green. This program creates a lifestyle change that is motivated by the small wonder of moments of discovery that will stick in their hearts and carry them all the way through their adulthood.” 3.a b Jason Toraldo, Urban Education Coordinator Irvine Nature Center “Inside the classroom students feel as though it’s just another day with maybe a guest teacher. As we move outside, they start to get [into] this new experience; they’re learning about nature that is actually around them on their city school grounds. A lot of them don’t actually think there is any nature in their neighborhoods. …Our goal is to get them to respect nature and then become stewards of the environment.” 3.b c Rick Hobbs, Schoolyard Habitat Coordinator Irvine Nature Center 3.c “We develop a plan and create projects, like different themed gardens that give students the opportunity to learn outdoors. We create spaces in which students can learn about the natural world, and any discipline, really – math, art, social studies, science. Through our programming we’ve seen direct results in science testing scores and a way to make that more tangible for students. They get to learn [the discipline] in the classroom, but then have it reinforced in the outdoor classroom.” Students d Zoe, Medfield Heights Elementary 4.d “All of us planted in the garden and we’re planting more so we can make the Earth a better place. There are bugs living in the garden – there’s purple flowers, pink flowers, yellow flowers, all kinds of flowers. My favorite part is where you see all of the flowers and you can like walk through them on the path. The garden actually makes Medfield look prettier and it makes coming to school – great!” e Michaela, Medfield Heights Elementary “It’s really fun. I like getting dirty. They teach us about what kind of trees we’re looking at or what kind of flowers we’re planting, or how worms help us and stuff. We find worms and everything and then we just like get them in our hand and we just put them back and sometimes we can find butterflies on the flowers.” f 4.e 4.f Mary, Medfield Heights Elementary “Like sometimes we just catch flies and put soil in for worms and we take out the worms and see if they’re having a baby or not. We learn about butterflies, and we learn about plants and a lot about bugs. Irvine really teaches all about nature and what’s really good about it.” Since its inception in 1993, the Urban Education Program has served 91 schools and 56 recreation centers. The program has also served 16,288 elementary school students and 4,338 middle and high school students.
