THE WBT st NOW CELEBRATING 41 YEARS OF BROADWAY MUSICALS AND FINE DINING WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE presents PRODUCTION ABoUT “GoDSPELL” Godspell was originally a Carnegie Mellon University project for John Michael Tebelak’s master’s thesis. Tebelak developed the play’s concept, which connected Bible parables with actors behaving like clowns in order to bring a joyful and spontaneous feeling to the material. The first score, written by a friend of the director, attached rock music to a set of lyrics from hymns and psalms. This original version was performed at CMU in 1970. The show was quickly optioned for an Off-Broadway production. Composer Stephen Schwartz, another alumnus of Carnegie Mellon’s theater department, was hired by the producers to write a new song score for the upcoming Off-Broadway version. Schwartz (who would go on to write the score of Wicked, among others), incorporated a variety of musical styles, from pop to folk rock, gospel and vaudeville. Schwartz said, “It just had to be musicalized in a way that was more accessible or emotional, and had more variety.” He said, “I come not from a Christian upbringing and therefore I really didn’t know the New Testament. I was reading some of these parables for the first time and the hymns that I set with new music for the show are all from the Episcopal Hymnal. I basically was responding to the material fresh, for the first time.” This fresh approach coupled with his background in theatre and popular music, gave rise to the joyful Godspell score. “Godspell’s presentational, comically improvisational style appeals to just about everyone. Perhaps the greatest tribute to the show’s popularity is the fact that its unabashedly religious subject matter hasn’t prevented it from receiving countless stagings in every conceivable venue.” Godspell went on to become an off-Broadway hit in 1971 and ran for 2124 performances. It then opened on Broadway in 1976. The show went on to have runs in London and Toronto (whose cast included victor Garber, SCTv alumni Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas and Martin Short, as well as SNL’s Gilda Radner and musical director, Paul Shaffer.) A successful movie version was made in 1973. This film version uses New York City as its stage. Among its highlights is a view from a helicopter above the newly built World Trade Center towers. The show was revived on Broadway in 2011, and it has played all over the world and with numerous touring companies as well. Godspell leaves one with compelling messages about love, compassion, forgiveness, community, hypocrisy and giving one’s life for one’s beliefs. – PIA HAAS BECOME A SEASON SUBSCRIBER! The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. Godspell is our 190th Mainstage Production.) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining. Actors’ Equity Association (AEA), founded in 1913, represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions.
