WELCOME
From Seattle Theatre Group, a non-profit arts organization
Tonight we are excited to welcome you to the much-anticipated 9th show
in our 2015/2016 KeyBank Broadway at The Paramount Season, NEWSIES!
This smash-hit, which garnered Tony Awards® for Best Score and Best
Choreography, has been bringing audiences to their feet since it opened on
Broadway in 2012, and we are thrilled to be bringing it to the Paramount for
the first time.
Though this is the first time the production is taking the stage at the
Paramount, STG has been developing a relationship with NEWSIES for some
time now. Working with our Education and Community Programs team,
Lou Castro, NEWSIES Assistant Choreographer staged “Seize the Day” with
Seattle area young dancers who performed in the DANCE This performance
last July at the Moore Theatre.
This is just one example of STG’s continued efforts to explore how the shows
on our KeyBank Broadway at the Paramount season can offer opportunities
that help us to reach a growing community of young artists. It’s these
relationships that have a lasting effect and ultimately benefit those young
artists who are so eager to learn from new and challenging experiences.
We hope the STG/Disney relationship will continue to grow as these amazing
programs continue to develop, and we thank all of you for continuing to
support this work through your subscriptions and donations.
Thank you to Disney, the company of NEWSIES, KeyBank Broadway at The
Paramount, Broadway Across America, and our STG Education staff for all
they have done to help these programs and this partnership blossom. And
with that, we invite you to sit back and enjoy the rousing music, incredible
dance numbers, and astonishingly inspirational story of Disney’s NEWSIES!

of Thomas Schumacher. Worldwide, its eight
Broadway titles have been seen by over 133
million theatergoers and have been nominated
for 57 Tony Awards®, winning Broadway’s highest
honor 20 times. With 15 productions currently
produced or licensed, a Disney musical is being
performed professionally somewhere on the
planet virtually every hour of the day. The
company’s inaugural production, Beauty and the
Beast, opened in 1994. It played a remarkable 13
year run on Broadway and has been produced
in 28 countries worldwide. In November 1997,
Disney opened The Lion King, which received six
1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical. In its
18th smash year on Broadway, it has welcomed
more than 80 million visitors worldwide to date,
and can currently be seen in ten productions
worldwide. Having played 22 countries on
every continent except Antarctica, The Lion
King’s worldwide gross exceeds that of any film,
Broadway show or other entertainment title in
box office history. Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida
opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000
Tony Awards. It was followed by Mary Poppins,
a co-production with Cameron Mackintosh,
which opened in London in 2004 and went on
to enjoy a six year Tony-winning Broadway
run. Tarzan®, which opened on Broadway in
2006, is now an international hit with an awardwinning production in its 6th year in Germany.
In January 2008, The Little Mermaid opened on
Broadway and was the #1-selling new musical
of that year. Disney Theatrical Productions
opened two critically acclaimed productions on
Broadway in 2012, receiving seven Tony Awards
between them: Newsies, which is currently on
tour throughout North America, and Peter
and the Starcatcher, which enjoyed a two year
New York run. Other successful stage ventures

hit Shakespeare in Love, stage productions of
Disney’s High School Musical, Der Glöckner Von
Notre Dame in Berlin, and King David in concert.

regional theatres to develop new stage titles

STG Disney Musicals in Schools 2015 Student Share
Celebration at The Moore. Photo by Danielle Barnum.
In March 2014, Disney Theatrical Group
invited Seattle Theatre Group to launch
Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS) in
the Seattle region. Together, our goal
is to provide the training necessary
for teachers to continue a tradition of
theatre education in under-resourced
elementary schools for years to come.
Over the course of a semester, Seattle
Theatre Group Teaching Artists guide
school teachers through the process
of mounting a musical with student
performers. This year, Dunlap, South
Shore, Martin Luther King, and McMicken
Heights Elementary Schools have been
selected to participate in the program.
On Tuesday, March 29, 2016, these
schools performed excerpts from their
renditions of Aladdin, The Jungle Book,
and The Lion King in the Student Share
Celebration at The Moore Theatre. The
student share event was free and open to
the public.
Your support makes it possible to
provide this experience to students and
faculty. Performance rights, ShowKit
materials, Professional Development,
and onsite Teaching Artist support are
provided at no charge. Disney Musicals
in Schools empowers schools to connect
students with the arts now and into
the future, exposing them to the many
benefits of musical theatre, including
the development of self-confidence,
collaborative skills, speaking and reading
skills, and creativity.
