Congratulations to the above Spike Club
Members, and our deepest appreciation for
their ongoing commitment and dedicated
work!
To remain an active Spike with the NAHB
you are required to bring in one new
member every year.
To become a Spike you must recruit six new
members. Each new member is one Spike
point. Twice during the year NAHB offers
multiple SPIKE POINT months. Spikes
also get half a point for each member
renewal that they sponsored.
Recruit new members, be a Spike!
SPIKES STAND UP...
Hello Members,
Calling all Spikes to join in the membership
committee meetings! As Spikes we are the
recruitment arm of the HBA so we need to be at the
membership committee meetings to help plan our year
for our members!
We have a couple fun ideas for Spike trips that are close
by and inexpensive. Have your own idea bring it to us
let’s see if we can have some more fun things to
participate in!
The Spike dollars paid for recruiting new members will
live on for 2014. So when you bring in new members you
will earn these Spike dollars that can be used at any HBA
function like cash. Saves you money at GMM’s, events,
tickets for events, the Spike bar, use the Spike dollars to
help cover the cost. This only works at HBA events so
don’t try to use these at Wendy’s Drive Thru- they aren’t
Spikes!
2014 looks promising, so to get the best results of your
investment in membership get involved at the HBA. We
work hard and have fun all at the same time! Hope you
join us!
Your Spike Club President,
Jim Linn

FHBA
President’s Message
We are so glad for another year it’s not funny!
We have great ideas for the association and
“branding” is one of them. What’s that you
say? Well, I’ll tell you. One of the biggest
issues that our industry faces is the
“encroacher”. These are businesses that are
neither licensed nor insured, but offer possibly
less quality, unguaranteed services to the public at uncompetitive
rates and encroach on the abilities of licensed and insured
professionals to earn their livings.
Well, we want to set ourselves apart from the herd by “branding”
each and every member with the HBA logo! How? Simply, we
want you to include the HBA logo in ALL of your advertising.
We, in turn, are going on an ad campaign to give a boost to our
membership by encouraging the public to look for the HBA logo
and do business with HBA members. We’ll let the community
know that our members are licensed and insured and that only
members in good standing with the backing of the HBA will have
access to our logo. We’ll ask that they call the HBA for referrals
before hiring any contractor. The HBA logo is our “Good
Housekeeping Seal of Approval”. I wonder if this is how Angie’s
List got started?
We are already talking to advertisers, but we need membership
participation to make this program happen and grow. If you have
suggestions you want to share contact Brenda, Bobbe or me at the
HBA.
This is your association – get involved – make it work for you!
Best regards,
by Ron Lieberman
Quite often, we think of government – federal, state and
local – as the enemy. Certainly, sometimes that
sentiment is justified. We all know first-hand what excessive
regulations and fees add to the final cost our lots, homes, remodeling
jobs, products and services. But let’s look at the other side of the coin.
Local governments are now our strongest ally in the fight against
unlicensed activity in our state. Most builders enjoy a very positive
working relationship with local building officials (just as FHBA has a
solid alliance with the Building Officials Association of Florida). And
at least one state agency – the Department of Business and
Professional Regulation (DBPR) – is winning high marks for being
business friendly. DBPR Secretary Ken Lawson spoke to the Flagler
County Chamber of Commerce last week and said his main goal is to
be a partner with the million business owners that his office regulates.
Lawson told reporter Aaron London of the Daytona Beach NewsJournal he’s proud of the fact that over the past two years, DBPR has
reduced the time it takes to get a professional license from 41 days to
an average of two days. Lawson says he believes that most businesses
want to be regulated, but with regulations that make sense. And he
says he looks hard every day at how regulations can be streamlined to
save business owners time and money. It’s a refreshing attitude and a
reminder to us all that while government may not always be our best
friend, they are far from being our worst enemy.
Ron Lieberman is a third-generation home builder and developer. He
is a two-time President of the Citrus County BA and a former
chairman of the Citrus County Affordable Housing Authority and the
Advisory Committee to the Tampa Bay Regional Transportation
Authority.

The Year of Educating
Happy New Year....
Perspectives from Paul Thompson
We m a d e i t t h r o u g h a n o t h e r y e a r.
Congratulations everyone it’s 2014! This promises to be an
interesting year full of events, politics, (it is an election year) and
issues to fight like school impact fees.
First of all we are having a Parade of Homes this year! We have 9
builders and 15 entries so far! There is still a short window of
opportunity to be a part of the parade so call the HBA office right
away!
Secondly our first GMM is a mixer. January 27th here at the HBA
is an open house Mix & Mingle sponsored by 2-10 Home Buyers
Warranty and FHBInsurance. Spike Cash Bar and Sonny’s BBQ
is catering. Starts early at 5:30pm. No charge so join us for a social
evening to say Hi how were your holidays? RSVP so we have
enough food.
Third we want to inform you about our dues increase for 2014.
NAHB has raised their dues by $16 for 2014. Your HBA board has
decided we have to increase our dues by that same amount as we
cannot absorb the loss. So starting with January 2014 renewals all
dues for Associates and Builder members will go up by $16.
Finally please read the Weekly News Brief and the emails so you
are in the know! This is our primary way to reach you and there are
days when the notices could save you real dollars. Thanks!
It almost sounds like a contradiction of terms, but it’s
true: there was good news coming out of Washington
last week. That would be the Senate confirmation of Congressman
Mel Watt of North Carolina to become the new director of the Federal
Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). President Obama’s choice for the
job had faced an uphill battle in the Senate where Republicans
preferred the selection of a technically equipped housing bureaucrat as
opposed to a career politician. But Watt had the support of the National
Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the National Association
of Realtors® mainly because it’s unlikely that he will favor highly
restrictive underwriting standards for federally-backed mortgage
loans, nor is he likely to dismantle Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
NAHB President Rick Judson, who like Watt hails from Charlotte,
said as much last week, announcing he was looking forward to
working with Watt to help “revamp Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and
create a U.S. housing finance system that ensures liquidity and
stability for homeownership and rental housing.” Look for FHFA’s
new leader to be a willing partner in achieving those goals.
Paul Thompson, CAE, MIRM, is CEO/Executive Vice President of
the Florida Home Builders Association and holds an MBA from
Florida State University.
“Until we meet again…” Brenda

Just before the break we had two nice events to help close out the year—Breakfast With Santa
and our Christmas Party GMM at Silverthorn.
The Spike event, Breakfast With Santa, was a really fun morning. Turnout was better than
expected and the kids had a ball!. Many, many thanks to Pat Ried (Pat Ried Acoustical Ceilings)
for being our Santa. He is a really good sport to do this and was a great Santa. Also a big thanks
to John Mason Catering for serving up a breakfast that is, as always, wonderful! Love those
hash browns.
Our December Christmas GMM was held at Silverthorn CC and it
was a memorable evening. Well deserving members received
their congratulatory awards as a thank you for their hard work on
committees and events throughout the year. The very special Len
Tria award in memory of our own Len Tria was awarded to our
very special Bob Eaton who works tirelessly in the governmental
affairs arena for the betterment of the HBA and its members. Well
done Bob.
I look forward to working with you again this year. Let’s make it a
good one! Get the most out of your membership.. participate!

Authority.

Congratulations to the above Spike Club
Members, and our deepest appreciation for
their ongoing commitment and dedicated
work!
To remain an active Spike with the NAHB
you are required to bring in one new
member every year.
To become a Spike you must recruit six new
members. Each new member is one Spike
point. Twice during the year NAHB offers
multiple SPIKE POINT months. Spikes
also get half a point for each member
renewal that they sponsored.
Recruit new members, be a Spike!
SPIKES STAND UP...
Hello Members,
Calling all Spikes to join in the membership
committee meetings! As Spikes we are the
recruitment arm of the HBA so we need to be at the
membership committee meetings to help plan our year
for our members!
We have a couple fun ideas for Spike trips that are close
by and inexpensive. Have your own idea bring it to us
let’s see if we can have some more fun things to
participate in!
The Spike dollars paid for recruiting new members will
live on for 2014. So when you bring in new members you
will earn these Spike dollars that can be used at any HBA
function like cash. Saves you money at GMM’s, events,
tickets for events, the Spike bar, use the Spike dollars to
help cover the cost. This only works at HBA events so
don’t try to use these at Wendy’s Drive Thru- they aren’t
Spikes!
2014 looks promising, so to get the best results of your
investment in membership get involved at the HBA. We
work hard and have fun all at the same time! Hope you
join us!
Your Spike Club President,
Jim Linn
