Spring Has Sprung at Muscatatuck NWR Spring is a busy time at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. March kicks off with the Indiana Master Naturalist class on March 2. The class is held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in March and April and features a different natural history topic each week. There is a $35 fee for materials. Wetland Day is Saturday, March 19, and will feature a wetland walk, a cell-phone photography program and children’s activities relating to wetlands. MidMarch is a prime waterfowl migration time so the wildlife viewing should be excellent during this event. A Family Fishing workshop will take place on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop is for families who would like to learn more about fishing. Refuge staff and volunteers will provide instruction on the basics of fishing, then everyone will go fishing with all equipment provided. That day is also a free fishing day in Indiana and no license is needed. There will also be a free hot dog lunch. The annual Earth Day Cleanup will be held on April 23 at Muscatatuck. Volunteers will gather at 9 a.m. at the Refuge Visitor Center to work on a variety of cleanup/improvement projects including invasive species removal. On April 30, come “Get the Buzz on Pollinators” at Muscatatuck when a variety of programs and exhibits around the Visitor Center will demonstrate what people can do for our endangered pollinators in their yards and properties. Other happenings at the Refuge include: * Nature Time Preschool Class, second Wednesday of each month, 9:30 a.m. The class offers nature-related crafts, stories and songs. March 9 and April 13. * Guided Bird Walk, third Saturday of each month, begins at 8 a.m. from Visitor Center. March 19 and April 16. Contact Muscatatuck@fws.gov or call 812-522-4352 x 12. The magnificently restored triple-span Medora Covered Bridge, built in 1875, is an example of Daniels’ use of Multiple King Post Truss construction with Double Burr Arch design. The Shieldstown Covered Bridge, built one year later, was the last covered bridge constructed in Jackson County.
