December 6, 2012 - Quilter`s Guild of Dallas
Next Meeting: December 6, 2012 Kay Cox, VP-Programs and Workshops We had a small but enthusiastic turnout for the November meeting. The row quilt group completed five tops, the disappearing nine-patch group completed two tops, the striped fabric group came close to completing one top, and the string quilting group made a significant pile of blocks ready to piece together. Woo-hoo! December Speaker Melinda Bula http://www.melindabula.com/ Melinda Bula has been in love with fabric all of her life and knew she would be an artist when she was just 16 years old. Melinda majored in art and she and her husband started their own wallpaper and fabric design business soon after the birth of their first son in 1988. Since moving to California in 1996, Melinda has been involved in quilting and wearable arts. Her sense of color and design has won her numerous awards. Her lecture will be “Developing the Artist Within Through Quilts and Wearable Arts.” We will take a humorous look, through the eyes of a quilt artist, as she finds her way through the world of arts, quilting, and wearable arts. The lecture includes a trunk show and fashion show featuring our own guild models. There are no workshops in December. Afternoon Glory January 3, 2013 What to bring to meeting: • YOUR NEW MEMBERSHIP CARD! • Bring and Brag items • QGD Raffle Quilt stubs & payments • Guild Library books • Show entries • Money to register for upcoming workshops, etc. • Completed Covers for Kids projects While the football fiends are at home watching bowl games, we’ll be kicking off 2013 with our guest Leigh McDonald. Tips will be presented for storage of tools, fabric and quilts as well as how to make a multi-purpose small space work. Leigh’s new studio is located in her apartment home and every inch of space is utilized. Workshops: • Friday, January 4 - Color Theory - a basic workshop for using color in quilts. Many of her quilts have received awards at international shows and she enjoys sharing tips and tricks to add panache to simple quilts and take heirloom pieces to new heights. Real quilts will be shared, then details will be displayed via video camera and projector. Footnote from Judy Kriehn: Marcia Hampton and I heard Ms. Cleveland speak to the Denton Guild last year. The November meeting, when the Board will elect the new VP-Community Service, will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012. American Quilt Study Group Seminar: Great Educational Opportunity Marian Ann J. Montgomery, Ph.D. VP of Education photo by Dr. Montgomery The Annual Meeting of the American Quilt Study Group was held in Lincoln, Nebraska at the beginning of October. Yes, it was held during my birthday, but this was the first time the group dedicated to the study of quilts and their makers met in Lincoln since the new building of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum has opened, and I HAD to see it! The weekend was a fabulous time of seeing quilts and hearing the latest research on quilt history. The papers will be published in the 2012 edition of Uncoverings. The papers included one about Nine California Art Quilt Pioneers, which discussed formally trained artists that took up quilting as the medium for their art. I was fascinated to see the similarities and differences among these women. Some went to quilting because they could do it while minding children at home and since the materials were non-toxic it was easier to create art in this medium around their children. Some were part of the quilt revival around the Bicentennial, but in general it was the fact that they could work from their home with small children that was an important factor. This reminds me of the young women taking up quilting today to furnish their homes and celebrate the arrival of little ones. Other papers revealed interesting tidbits. Kitty Ledbetter, from TEXAS, documented early cheater cloth (printed patchwork) in a quilt from the 1840s. And we thought cheater cloth—oops they are calling it printed patchwork now, was new!? Our Guild contributed funds to the building of the new International Quilt Study Center and Museum. So it was with pride that I took the photograph of our name on their wall in the tumbling block pattern—one of my favorite patterns. The next AQSG Seminar will be December 18-22 in Charleston, South Carolina. AQSG has not met in South Carolina before and it promises to be a wonderful opportunity to see early southern quilts as well as those of contemporary African American quilt artists. Google the organization to learn more. The Seminar falls during our 27th anniversary and I am already talking my husband into going early, so we can enjoy the sights in this historical town before the conference begins. Retreat Information and Forms Available! You can find the form/information on pages 9-10 of this newsletter. Retreat Co-Chair, Chris Becker, will have forms available at the December meeting, and will also be prepared to accept credit card payments from members, as well as the usual cash or check payments. QGD Online - December 2012 page 5 Piecing During the Holidays? Marte Keller and Martha Smith Guild librarians Wondering what to make for your next quilt? Your QGD Library has several quilt block ‘anthologies’ that provide a never-ending source of inspiration. The Guild has several classic block books. • Barbara Brackman has a wonderful reference book identifying over 4,000 blocks: Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. • Jinny Beyer also has 2 terrific block books: Quilter’s Album of Patchwork Patterns and Quilter’s Album of Blocks and Borders. The first one has 4050 pieced blocks and the second one has more than 750 geometric designs. • For a historical perspective try Carrie Hall Blocks. From 1930 to 1935 Carrie Hall worked on reproducing all known blocks up to that time. This book contains photographs of the 800 plus blocks collection as well as patterns and assembly diagrams of over 200 blocks. Other interesting block books include: • 5500 Quilt Block Designs (Maggie Malone), kind of a quilter’s bible of blocks • 100 Paper Pieced Quilt Blocks (Linda Causee) comes with a CD to print life size blocks • 365 Fun-to-Stitch Blocks ( Jeanne Stauffer), for the more experienced quilter • 101 Applique Blocks (Nancy Brenan Daniel) with full sized drawings for both beginner and intermediate quilters • The Block Book ( Judy Martin). The majority of the 156 blocks are Judy Martin originals On a lighter note we have: Sampler Quilt blocks from Native American Designs by Joyce Mori and 24 Loveable Animal Quilt Blocks by Linda Causee Sunshine & Shadows Cindy Matthews, VP-Membership Send your news to Internal Communications Chairman, Suzanne Hardebeck at sshardebeck@aol.com Sunshine • Carol Morrissey’s quilt, Texas Horned Toad, will be moving to Colorado to live with quilter Ricky Tims! Ricky and his partner have a collection of horned toad art, and Ricky was thrilled to be adding her wonderful quilt to his collection! • Tonya Littmann’s quilt, Rusty’s New Teddy Bear, received the “Judge’s Choice” award chosen by John Flynn. • Barbara Oliver Hartman received a second place award for her quilt No Direction Home, in the Art-Abstract, Large category. Shadows • After a hospital stay, Joan Wilson is back home - and got to go home to her new house! Good friends helped her husband get their belongings settled in while Joan was recovering. No doubt, she would appreciate your notes of good cheer! Her new address is listed in the Guild directory. Our continued “Get Well” wishes go to Joan. QGD Online - December 2012 page 6 Visited the Guild Website Lately? Fran Casey Website Manager Hey, quilters! How would you like to be able to register for a workshop online? Maybe even pay with PayPal? How about signing up to volunteer or renewing your membership by logging into our website and filling out a simple form? What do we want from the Guild website in the future? How would you like to see an online forum where you could sell/share sewing supplies? What about submitting your quilt show entries online? More and more, the Internet is making our lives easier and helping us to better connect with each other. A committee of members is beginning the process of redesigning the site, and we need your input on the hypothetical situations listed above and more. We want to hear your ideas. Tell us about websites you like. Or tell us what you don’t like about the current site and want to change. Contact me at francasey@sbcglobal.net, and I will share all of the comments with the committee. Let’s make quiltersguildofdallas.org the best it can be! Mini Quilt Auction: a gift that keeps on giving! The difference that guild members make via the annual Miniature Quilt Auction is measurable. We thought it might be helpful to know how much of a difference. Two former recipients have shared how the dollars made a huge difference for them. In 2012, the auction dollars went to Hobby Crafters, Inc. Bob Skelton is happy to report that they have produced their first catalog. This catalog is given to the charitable organizations so they can select the toys that best fit their group. This communication tool has allowed Hobby Crafters volunteers to determine what supplies to purchase and what toys to make. Currently, the toy inventory is 3251 and they expected to have more than 4000 by the end of them month. In their words: It is especially pleasing to report that our toy quality is much improved because of our ability to purchase larger quantities of quality materials needed to make the toys. Companies tend to give larger discounts or donations, for which we are very grateful, so our dollars go further. Mary Lord & Bonnie McElearney Auction Co-Chairs In 2009, the mini auction dollars went towards furnishing a craft room at the new Ronald McDonald House. Kay Cox was one of four primary designers for the craft room that opened in 2010. In Kay’s words: The quilting/craft room has 4 sewing stations, a counter the right height for cutting and pressing, tables for basting, nice task chairs, lots of shelving for supplies, fabric, tools, and everything it takes to do just about anything one can think of. Members donated lots of child friendly fabric and several moms and a couple of teens have completed quilts. The guild’s gift from the auction helped make this a very popular room in the new house and a really fun place for volunteers to spend time. Kay is very appreciative of all that the Guild does to support the organization that she retired from. In addition to providing the craft room supplies, the guild continues to support the house through the Covers for Kids outreach. Kay mentioned that there are additional opportunities to volunteer at the house. If you are interested in volunteering to staff the craft room let Kay know. Her dream is to have the craft room open each day. Thank you members! December is a month when we are reminded that the best gift is what we give to others. We hope you see that your continuous generosity makes a difference for others and influences our community to follow our lead.
