INTRODUCTION
The Automotive Aftermarket has seen a steady increase
in the demand for replacement Xenon High Intensity
Discharge Bulbs (HID), also known as Gas Discharge or
Xenon Bulbs.
Once the domain of luxury or executive vehicles, HID bulbs
are now fitted as standard to many vehicles.
At 3200 lumens, HID bulbs have a higher light output than halogen bulbs.
With a colour temperature of 4100oK they produce a crisp white light
output that is close to daylight compared to the yellower 3000°K produced
by standard halogen bulbs.
HID bulbs have a long life averaging around 3000 hours of use.

XENON HID
TECHNOLOGY
Unlike conventional auto bulbs HID
bulbs have no filament which are
susceptible to vibration. Instead,
there is a glass capsule in the centre
of the bulb containing Xenon gas.
Two metal electrodes sealed into the
glass capsule enables a high voltage
to arc across, igniting the Xenon gas
which produces the light.
The start-up voltage required to arc
across the capsule to ignite the gas is
typically up to 26,000 volts.

A BALLAST IS REQUIRED FOR EACH HEADLAMP.
The ballast provides the correct voltage to start and operate the bulbs. The ballast
for D2/D4 bulbs includes a starter to provide the 26,000v needed to ignite the
bulb. In D1/D3 the starter is in the base of the bulb. Once a HID bulb has been
ignited the ballast maintains a lower operating AC voltage. The operating voltage
is 85v for D1 and D2 Xenon HID bulbs and 42v for D3 and D4 Xenon HID bulbs.

TYPES OF XENON
HID BULBS
There are currently 4 types of Xenon HID bulbs;
D1, D2, D3 and D4. They have a suffix of either R or S ie D1R or D1S. Bulbs
with the suffix R are designed to work in Complex Surface Reflector headlamp
units. Bulbs with the suffix S are designed to work in Projector headlamps.
All Xenon HID bulbs must be fitted with a direct replacement. So, if you
remove a D2R Xenon HID bulb then it must be replaced with a D2R Xenon
HID bulb.
D3 and D4 bulbs are more recent additions to the range and are designed to
work with new compact ballasts. They are mercury free, so have better
eco-friendly credentials. They also have a lower operating voltage – 42v AC.

FAULT DIAGNOSIS
A Xenon HID system is made up of different components.
Follow the simple checks to replace the correct part.
1) Check the ballast.
You should hear an electrical switching noise around the headlight area,
this is the ballast trying to ignite.
2) If the ballast can be heard then the bulb requires replacing.
3) If no noise is heard then check the relevant fuse (see vehicle handbook).
4) If the fuses are ok, the ballast or wiring are at fault. Consult an auto
electrician.
SAFETY
CHARACTERISTICS
Due to the high start-up voltage approx. 26,000 volts, in a HID system,
safety features have been built in.
1) The Xenon HID system will automatically shut down if a fault occurs.
2) The Xenon HID system will automatically shut down if a cable is removed
during operation.
3) In the event of a failed bulb the system will only try to light the bulb 7
times to protect the ballast electronics.

BULB REPLACEMENT
Xenon HID bulbs require a high starting current that can be
hazardous. This fitting guide has been produced to show, step
by step, how Xenon HID bulbs can safely be replaced.
NOTE: Before commencing any fitting
operation, ensure the vehicle is parked
off the road with the handbrake on.
Step 1
Consult the vehicle hand book for advice on how to remove the
headlamp fuse.
Step 2
IDENTIFY THE BULB REFERENCE
This can be found in the handbook or on the Headlamp unit.

Step 3
ISOLATE THE LIGHTING CIRCUIT
1) Turn off the ignition and remove the keys.
2) Switch off the headlight switch.
Step 4
3) Remove the headlamp fuse.
FITTING - ACCESS TO THE BULB
i) Consult vehicle handbook on to access the headlamps.
ii) Replacement procedures differ from vehicle to vehicle.
iii) This guide shows common easy to fit procedures.
TYPE 1 - HEADLAMP REMOVAL
➊ Remove the headlamp as per handbook. This could be a quick release
system or Torx system. ➋ Disconnect the power connector.
➌ When removing the headlamp take care not to scratch the lens on
any hard surface.

TYPE 2 - WHEEL ARCH
Turning the wheel into full lock will help gain access.
(Remember to remove key from ignition after locking wheels)
Step 5
REMOVING THE BULB
FOR D1 AND D3
1) Disconnect the ballast ➊
2) Unclip metal retainer ➋
NOTE: If there is no metal
retainer clip. Quarter turn the bulb
anticlockwise to unlock
3) Remove the bulb ➌
Step 5 continues on the next page ➡

Step 5 continued
FOR D2 AND D4
1) Rotate anti-clockwise and disconnect the connector ➊
2) Unclip metal retainer ➋
3) Remove the bulb ➌
Step 6
REPLACE WITH NEW BULB
i) Replace the bulb following the previous instruction in reverse.
ii) Check all the connections are made correctly.
iii) Replace the headlamp assembly covers, removed to access
the headlamp.
Step 7
CHECKING
i) Replace the lighting fuse and test the headlights are
working correctly.
ii) Check headlight alignment
NOTE: Due to the unique aging process of Xenon HID bulbs,
to ensure a colour match only replace in pairs.
