The Completion of Phase 2
Celebrating The Completion of Phase 2 Mill Modernization Project Irving Pulp and Paper, Limited March 2016 IRVING PULP & PAPER, LIMITED 165 years as part of the Saint John Community Sum total of Capital Investment at Irving Pulp and paper in the last 5 years 215 MILLION $ and counting! 1851 - Mill Opens on West Side of Saint John. The Cushing Sulphite Fibre Company, Limited owned by Andre Cushing. 1994 - 2005 - Significant investments reduced the environmental footprint of the mill on air, land, and water while at the same time increasing production capacity. These changes were good for the environment and the business. Among the improvements was the world’s first application of reverse osmosis pioneered at Irving Pulp and Paper. Water is filtered, recycled in the mill, and reused in the process. In 1988 there was no recycling of water at the mill and 30,000 gallons of water was required to produce each tonne of pulp. Today, Irving Pulp and Paper is recycling over 2,000 gallons per minute. The mill’s water consumption has been reduced by over 40%. 2014 - Canada’s Largest Pulp Mill Investment Since 1993 Announced. Part of JDI’s $513 Million Forest Sector Investment in New Brunswick. 1910 - Mill becomes the Edward Partington Pulp and Paper Company, Limited Incorporated. 1932 - Mill becomes Port Royal Pulp and Paper. Run by brothers Edward and Antoine LaCroix. 1946 - K.C. Irving purchases mill. Production increases to 40,000 tonnes of sulphite per year. 1951 - After the first expansion March 2014 - Ground-breaking for Mill Modernization Project. 2005 - Irving Pulp and Paper’s world’s first pollution prevention technology was developed with the University of New Brunswick (SJ). This partnership earned Irving Pulp and Paper and UNB the prestigious Synergy Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), a national award from the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment. The in-depth ground-breaking research by two scientists at UNBSJ, confirmed a very positive impact on water quality and fish health as a result of our patent reverse osmosis water treatment solution. 2005-2006 - Two environmental projects March 2016 – Phase 2 safely completed! Pictured above: the project team that made it happen. further reduce odour and dust. production was averaging 64,970 tonnes annually. 1970 - Record for pulp production broken. 95,991 tonnes annually. 1985 - 1988– Company invests in new equipment and technology to significantly reduce odour and improve air quailty. March 2016 - Engineering commences Irving Pulp and Paper today. 2 on Phase 3. Irving, Chairman, and Jim Irving, Co-Chief Executive Officer. As we mark 70 years of operation of the pulp mill in Saint John, we celebrate a renewed future. We’re delivering on our March 2014 investment announcements of $450 million at Irving Pulp and Paper, as part of the $513 million investment in forest products business across the province. The successful completion of Phase 2 of this project is a credit to the passion and skills of the project team and the 350 men and women who work at the pulp and paper mill, striving to find a better way, every day. It’s also a credit to our contractors. Phase 2 delivered $90 million of work to 166 New Brunswick contractors. Over 600,000 hours of contractor work was safely completed to get the job done. Many of these contracts were awarded to small businesses with twenty employees or less. We appreciate your skill and dedication! In addition to the upgrades at Irving Pulp and Paper, we have delivered on other promised investments announced in March 2014: • $38 million modernization of our sawmill in Chipman, N.B. • $3.2 million new state-of-the-art forest research lab in Sussex, N.B. Looking ahead, we’ve started on the engineering for Phase 3 at Irving Pulp and Paper. In total, Phase 3 is investment of approximately $250 million that will generate an additional 600,000 person hours of work in the construction of a new pulp dryer. We have also dedicated additional investments in projects that were not part of the March 2014 announcement: • $37 million in new capital projects at Lake Utopia Paper in St. George and Irving Paper in Saint John. • $56 million dedicated to support 65 new entrepreneurs across NB in their purchase of logging equipment which will employ approximately 120 new machine operators and truck drivers. We’re committed to New Brunswick. We’ve been in business here for over 130 years, and part of the west side of Saint John for 70 years. We're committed to taking care of our forests for a healthy environment and to ensure a strengthened future for the thousands of families that rely on a healthy forest sector in New Brunswick. The Irving Pulp and Paper mill is a vital cornerstone of our New Brunswick forest products operations. We’re adding value and jobs from the seedlings grown at the tree nursery in Juniper, N.B. to lumber from our New Brunswick sawmills that send chips to make pulp, paper, packaging, and tissue. We’re transforming New Brunswick’s forest resources with an ongoing investment in the home team – equipping the best people with the best technology. Today, our forest products operations are sustaining over 3,000 direct jobs, 5,000 indirect jobs and annual employment income of $500 million across New Brunswick (direct, indirect and contractors.) We work with over 1,700 N.B. suppliers purchasing $750 million (2015) in goods and services to produce and deliver quality forest products to customers in 30 countries around the world. We do it proudly from New Brunswick. UNB graduate and engineer Michelle Boyer, one of 310 employees at Irving Paper. I wanted to raise my family here. My grandfather worked here long before the war, back before the mill was bought by the Irvings. My father and uncles worked here so I joined shortly after high school in the maintenance program. I was here as a welder initially but became an industrial mechanic. It’s nice to know that history is still carrying on with my son and grandson working here. I also have a daughter that works at Irving Tissue. It’s been wonderful to work with the Irvings. We’re fortunate to have them. I think we should support our local business because local business supports us. They’ve provided myself and my family with a good living and a great future.” - Buddy Stout, third generation of five to work at Irving Pulp and Paper, Mechanical Technician “I had a job offer before I finished my course at NBCC. It was an awesome feeling knowing I would graduate and be able to start a good paying job right away – without having to move away. I’m lucky; I don’t miss any family dinners and birthdays. I’m 21 years old, I’m a homeowner, and I am so glad I get to work in my hometown.” - Kevin Stout, NBCC graduate, fifth generation to work at Irving Pulp and Paper, Call Crew “I was here the day they announced the mill modernization. It’s good for the city—it’s not just the people who work here, but the truckers, contractors, and everyone else. It means job security – young people can stay in Saint John and that’s a big thing. I love Saint John. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I grew up here, I know a lot of people, it’s got rivers and woods. It’s perfect for me.” - Chris Stout, fourth generation to work at Irving Pulp and Paper, Brown Stock Tech 1 “Grandparents are better in person.” “I didn’t want to move out west after school but the jobs were there and I needed experience. I always knew I would come home to NB someday, and when my daughter arrived it became our top priority. It’s great to be home, but even better to come back to the right job. The investments being made at the pulp mill mean exciting projects, new technology, and stability. This place is a big part of our community and it will be for years to come. And it’s no small thing that my kids will grow up with family close. Chatting online was okay for a while, but grandparents are better in person.” – Kyle Graves, Associate Project Engineer, Irving Pulp and Paper, UNB graduate Pat Graves holding Molly Graves, Janet Graves holding Sawyer Graves, Alison Bulmer and Kyle Graves. 8 PROUDLY PRINTED ON RADIANCE™ PAPER MADE BY THE TEAM AT IRVING PAPER ON THE EAST SIDE OF SAINT JOHN - SUPPLIER TO MAJOR U.S. RETAILERS Economic Impact 90 $ OVER MILLION 375 600,000 Person Hours of Construction Work Awarded to NB Contractors Full-time Equivalent Construction Jobs (direct and indirect) created by Phase 2 of the mill modernization project. 24 Labour $ Income Almost MILLION *Based on Stats Canada data Mill Modernization: By the Numbers “The economy of New Brunswick is starting to look brighter, with both the goods- and servicesproducing industries expected to see better growth this year and next. The forestry industry will benefit from strength in the U.S. housing market, an increase in the allowable annual softwood cut on Crown land, and the J.D. Irving mill upgrades. Overall, real GDP is expected to advance by 2.3% this year and 2.6% in 2016.” Conference Board of Canada May 28, 2015 “Forest product sector continues to strengthen, and investment activity supports construction despite an overall decline in merchandise exports in 2014, exports of wood products grew by 8%, which were propelled by rising shipments to the United States. We expect spending to expand capacity at the Pulp and Paper Mill in Saint John along with assorted other forestry investments to allow forestry exports to continue growing as a forecast rise in U.S. housing starts supports demand. If our work together for young people serves as a model to make a difference in other schools in our community, that is the best reward of all.” – J. K. Irving, founding partner of PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools) is an initiative that partners local businesses, community groups, and educational institutions with neighbourhood schools to provide an enhanced and enriched school experience. Co-founded in 2000 by Mr. J.K. Irving and the Saint John Education Centre of the Anglophone South School District (formerly School District 8), PALS combines initiatives that focus on academic achievement and a positive school environment. By working together, the school and its partners make a positive impact on the life of a child and the future of the community. Although poverty reduction remains the central focus of the PALS initiative in Saint John, partnerships are developed for a variety of reasons, a testament to its adoptability and adaptability as a model throughout the province and beyond. In Saint John and Moncton, many managers at J.D. Irving, Limited adjust work schedules so that interested employees can volunteer in the PALS program during their regular working hours. Since 2000, JDI employees have provided over 65,000 volunteer hours to children in our schools through PALS. Their activities are numerous, from mentoring and literacy support to breakfast/lunch programs and coaching. In 2007 Irving Pulp and Paper partnered with St. Patrick’s School, and for the past nine years, employees have been proud to give their time and resources to the students and educators at St. Patrick’s School. Each year for the last three years, Irving Pulp and Paper employees have provided over 3,300 volunteer hours at St. Patrick’s School. Irving Pulp and Paper is proud to be one of the PALS partners at St. Patrick’s School, joined by other local businesses and community groups – collaborating to meet the needs of the children. Recognized for its excellence nationally and internationally, the PALS model has expanded to over 30 schools throughout New Brunswick. Fostering Literacy Literacy Support Teacher As part of the J.D Irving, Limited group of companies, Irving Pulp and Paper is committed to building strong communities in meaningful ways. During the 2014-2015 school year, Irving Pulp and Paper helped with the provision of a Literacy Support Teacher at St. Patrick’s School. This teacher was dedicated to improving the literacy skills of elementary school students, with a primary focus on the second grade. Write to Ride Readers become Leaders To help foster a love of reading, Irving Pulp and Paper employees purchased a book for every student at St. Patrick’s school. That’s a total of 189 books! This gift extended to the teachers with over $1,000 credit for books for the school library and credit for teachers to purchase resources for classrooms. Educational Tools To better accommodate classrooms for diverse learners, Irving Pulp and Paper donated 40 Hokki Chairs to St. Patrick’s School. These ergonomic stools allow students who struggle to stay still during class time to move while remaining in their seats. 12 Write to Ride To encourage literacy and writing skills, Irving Pulp and Paper held a contest for all students in the school. Students wrote and submitted an original story. A winner was selected from each class and outfitted with a bike and helmet. “The partnership between Irving Pulp and Paper and St. Patrick’s School is one we hold very near and dear to our hearts. The staff at Irving Pulp and Paper have taken the words volunteerism and giving back to a whole other level. Their community outreach has a profound effect on the lives of our students and their families and we are forever grateful. Irving Pulp and Paper has partnered with St. Patrick’s School to empower our students to reach their highest potential. This event is a great example of how the spirit of volunteering has grown at Irving Pulp and Paper; from 2011 to 2015 the event has grown from 7 to 30 volunteers. Building, teamwork, and the thrill of a race who wouldn’t love that? Every year, Irving Pulp and Paper sponsors one of two St. Patrick’s School cars to race in the Soap Box Derby. The money raised at the Derby provides 70 school visits yearly to the PALS in the Park Program at Rockwood Park. Soap Box Derby Building it Up Supporting Families Supporting Families Jim Brewster, Senior Project Advisor at Irving Pulp and Paper, took his engineering knowledge out of the mill and into the classroom for a day. In his talk to elementary students he not only introduced students to engineering as a career path, but he also talked about the importance of a strong foundation – for buildings and for life. Jim shared with the class that a key to a strong foundation in life is a good education. Our spirit of giving is present all year round, but especially so during the holidays. Employees donate items to PALS Holiday Hampers, delivering food and tissue products to support 29 families. Building it up Buddy Bench Christmas Tradition Each year we welcome Saint John families for carol singing, hot chocolate, and tree lighting in Wolastoq Park. It’s a tradition that signals the beginning of the Christmas season. Buddy Bench Buddy Benches have been popping up on playgrounds across Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Thanks to employees at Irving Pulp and Paper, St. Patrick’s school now has one. The concept behind the bench is that if a student is feeling left out or lonely, they can sit on the bench to signal to other students they’d like a buddy to play with. Student leaders have been trained to approach these students, talk to them, and find them a playmate. Irving Pulp and Paper employees built and donated benches to St. Patrick’s and other local schools. Last year we hired 60 new college and university graduates from the class of 2015 for JDI New Brunswick operations Part of 4,239 total hires across operations in 2015 “JDI has nearly 1,400 community college graduates working across its operations – 97% work here in New Brunswick. JDI and the team at Irving Pulp and Paper have been very responsive partners - donating equipment, volunteering as guest speakers, and offering students work placements and full-time job opportunities. On behalf of NBCC, thanks to JDI for this investment – securing employment for future skilled graduates of NBCC.” – Marilyn Luscombe, President and CEO, NBCC “New Brunswick’s future is tied to the opportunities available to its young people. We deeply appreciate JDI’s generous support of our best and brightest students through scholarships, co-op programs, and hiring new graduates. More than 600 UNB alumni work at JDI operations. The mill modernization provides our graduates with challenging, rewarding work and the opportunity to contribute to the provincial economy.” — Eddy Campbell, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of New Brunswick “Over 160 Université de Moncton graduates work at JDI. Each year JDI provides challenging co-op and full-time opportunities to our students – helping New Brunswick’s young people apply their learning and find fulfilling careers in our province.” - Raymond Théberge, Université de Moncton President and Vice Chancellor “It’s exciting to be part of such a big project as a student. Seeing this kind of project come together is incredible. I’m looking forward to joining the team fulltime after graduation!” - Brent Libby, Former Co-op Student, Junior Project Engineer, Dalhousie University graduate “At my graduation ceremony I walked across the stage knowing I was walking into a full-time job. That’s a pretty amazing feeling.” – Evan O’Leary, Industrial Controls Technician, Irving Pulp and Paper , NBCC graduate “I had such a fantastic co-op experience at Irving Pulp and Paper. Here I see room to advance, work with new technology, and learn from great mentors.” - Peter MacNeill , Former Co-op Student, Junior Project Engineer, UNB graduate “I’m lucky enough to have been able to study and now work in my hometown.” – Craig Kelemen, Industrial Controls Technician, Irving Pulp and Paper, NBCC graduate “What I’ve enjoyed the most during my third co-op with Irving Pulp and Paper is the ability to see projects come to life. Thank you so much to my supervisors for everything I’ve learned. A co-op here is really a big opportunity.” - Roselyne Tuyizere (right), Engineering Co-op Student, Université de Moncton PROUDLY PRINTED ON RADIANCE™ PAPER MADE BY THE TEAM AT IRVING PAPER ON THE EAST SIDE OF SAINT JOHN - SUPPLIER TO MAJOR U.S. RETAILERS 15 Join the Team Full-Time Opportunities We’re proud to be able to keep people home, bring them home, and welcome newcomers. Irving, Limited helped Chris Clark of the Kingston Peninsula, New Brunswick, pay for tuition while studying power engineering at the New Brunswick Community College. After two work terms with JDI, Chris started his career at Irving Pulp and Paper. “I’ve been given tremendous leadership opportunities, even from the beginning of my career. The sky is the limit when it comes to professional development. I obtained my first class ticket in power engineering with the support of JDI. Now, eight years into my career, I feel so lucky: I go to a challenging job I love every day. I get to expand my knowledge in the evenings as I pursue my Bachelor of Applied Management at UNB, completely supported by the company. And on the weekends? I’m assembling a nursery. My wife and I are expecting our first baby, a baby girl, this summer. It’s busy. I don’t think people realize that there is a big focus on family here. You can have both.” Chris Clark, Department Superintendent, Irving Pulp and Paper, NBCC graduate Chris Clark is a Department Superintendent at Irving Pulp and Paper.
