Summer Picnic and Elections

Our annual year-end picnic is coming to Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill! This is a great opportunity to
network, hear updates on YMF activities, learn more about student outreach we are involved in and
professional development opportunities we have available!
We will also be electing our new officers so grab a few co-workers and help kickoff the summer with the
YMF. Ezell's famous fried chicken will be provided, but please bring a side or dessert to share as well.

May Community Service - Storm Drain Marking
Saturday, June 4th, 10:00am-12:00pm at The Landing in Renton,WA
May is "Puget Sound Starts Here" Month!
Come learn and help educate Renton residents in pollution prevention techniques.
We'll mark storm drains with "Only Rain Down the Drain" decals, test your stormwater knowledge, and
distribute educational materials to the public.
Please wear closed toed shoes and bring an appetite for lunch.

Supercharge Your Career Series -Career Development

The ASCE Supercharge Your Career Series is back! Come learn the key basics of Career Development
where you will gain an understanding of practical career-building principles and techniques that will help
keep your career on track.

YMF Annual Golf Tournament - Register Today!
Friday, August 5th, 2016
Willows Run Golf Club on the Coyote Creek Course
ASCE and SEAW are holding a joint annual golf tournament. Bring your clients and
colleagues for a fun afternoon of golfing, networking, and enjoying the beautiful
summer weather!
The tournament format will be a shotgun 4-man scramble starting at 1:00 pm. A
putting contest will be set up before the event, and range balls will be provided for
everyone to warm up. After the tournament, there will be a dinner social, a raffle, and
awards for the putting contest, teams with the lowest scores, and longest drive &
closest to the pin for both men and women.

Younger Member Leadership Symposium - Registration Now Open
Friday, August 5th - Sunday, August 7th, 2016
ASCE Headquarters in Reston, VA
Registration is now open for the 2016 Younger Member Leadership Symposium
slated for August 5-7 at ASCE Headquarters in Reston, Virginia. This two-day
leadership symposium will offer interactive sessions on professional development
topics you need to progress in your career. Registration is free and stipends of $135
will be available on a limited basis to help off-set the cost of travel. A pre-conference
tour of the United States' Capitol in Washington DC, will start off the weekend. Make
your plans and register early for this fun, informative weekend.

Volunteers Needed - Escape From Gilligan's Island
August 2nd-4th, 9:45am-3:45pm
@ Kent-Evergreen Girls Scouts
Maple Valley and Renton
The Kent-Evergreen Girl Scout Day Camp in the Maple Valley/Renton area will be challenging their
campers this year to create life raft prototypes to 'escape from Gilligan's Island.'
They are looking for volunteers to come in and teach the campers the basic scientific and engineering
principles behind design, buoyancy, surface tension, etc. as well as guide them through their building
process.
Volunteers would be needed from about 9:45-3:45 on August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. They would be teaching
6 different groups a day in about 30 minutes sessions (very little teaching, much more doing).
If you have questions or are interested in being a part of the fun and exciting STEM activities during

Emerging Leaders Alliance - Accepting Applications until July 1st

The Emerging Leaders Alliance (ELA) is a partnership between engineering,
research, and science-based organizations dedicated to leadership development.
The ELA promotes great leaders within the technical community, arming them with
broad skills to address the needs of people in the 21st century.
The ELA hosts an annual interdisciplinary leadership conference, providing training
in topics such as social styles, leading innovation, global and virtual team leadership,
and more. The Conference is an exciting opportunity to participate in hands-on
leadership training with members of leading engineering, research, and scientific
organizations.

UPDATES/PAST EVENTS
Engineering Rocks!
Our K-12 Event for the month of May was a huge success. Hundreds of children
stopped by our tables to learn about Civil Engineering and do some hands on
activities with our Younger Member volunteers. Thanks for everyone that came out
and made this fun event successful!!!
