The Silver Award is earned through a community service project that requires a minimum of 50 hours of work as well as other strict requirements. Lauren, Kaitlyn and Erin, now ALJ High School freshmen, have been close friends since kindergarten so working on this together was especially meaningful. The three girls have volunteered at the center for three years, entertaining residents with dance, musical performances and games. Their interaction with and affection for residents inspired the idea for their service project. They realized that some residents, many in wheelchairs, may have enjoyed gardening, but age, declining health and physical limitations make it difficult. So the girls set about designing a mobile, flexible gardening cart, built to Americans With Disability (ADA) specs, with removable planting trays, so residents can enjoy gardening and living with beautiful, seasonal plants and flowers year round in their sunny community recreation room. The project began early this year with the girls drafting, negotiating and redrafting several designs before finally settling on one. They used recycled wood and began to assemble the cart in May, learning how to use various hand and power tools safely in the process. They also shopped for (above) Lauren Mulvihill, Kaitlyn King and Erin Heaning, Cadette Girl Scouts in Clark-Garwood-Winfield Troop 40361, delivered their scout-designed and built garden cart to the Clark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Clark to earn their Silver Award. supplies, paying for some of it with money they had earned babysitting. The trio put time into the project whenever they could over the summer. Finally, after many hours of planning, shopping, building, sanding and staining, and changing things that weren't going quite as planned, the cart was completed in late July. The girls delivered the cart on September 2nd, 2015 to the center. They planted with the residents, filling the cart with beautiful fall mums and a few annuals to brighten residents' days throughout the fall. Schieferstein Farm Market and Garden Center and Shop Rite of Clark generously donated some of the plants needed for their project. The girls plan to continue volunteering at the center, and will rotate plants seasonally. They are already planning to plant Poinsettias in December, Pansies in early spring, and pretty summer annuals in May or June. This year, due to the generosity of our membership, the association was able to award a third scholarship, The Donald Storms ’59 Scholarship to another deserving senior. The recipients are Louis Cacchione, Danielle Marzone, and Emily Kirk. The association wishes them well as they set off to their college campuses this fall. At the annual Hall of Fame/Scholarship dinner in May, Hall of Famer inductee, Ralph Marano pledged a fourth scholarship to be given to a student who plans to attend a trade or technical school. This award will be presented along with the others at our May, 2016, dinner. Anyone wishing to nominate an outstanding ALJ alum to the Hall of Fame may secure a nomination form on the website or in the main office in the high school. All submissions must be presented before January 15, 2016. Membership in the Alumni Association is open to all ALJ alumni, parents/guardians of current ALJ students, and past and present faculty. Registration can be initiated on the association website, aljalumni.org. There is no fee and the website is secure. Classes who are planning reunions have received a great deal of help by having their classmates register in advance of the event. The association meets at the high school five times a year with scholarship, dinner, and activities committees meeting a few additional times. The next meeting will be held on October 7th at 9:30. All alumni are welcomed to attend. 102 B N. HEHNLY SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL MRS. CONNER’S CLASS HAS SUPERPOWERS! The Frank K. Hehnly Executive Student Council team recently kicked off the 2015-2016 school year with their first morning meeting. The board was elected by the Frank K Hehnly student body in June of 2015. Under the guidance of Hehnly School teacher; Megan Bowers and Laura Venezio; the Student Council is looking forward to a school year filled with fun and school spirit! Mrs. Nina Conner’s second and third grade language arts students at Frank K. Hehnly Elementary School in Clark are preparing for a successful new year by flexing their newfound superhero muscle! Each student was asked to imagine themselves as the superhero in a back to school comic book. The students then wrote about how their chosen set of superpowers would aid them in progressing academically through the school year to meet specified goals. Superpowers ranged from being a good friend to being the fastest reading third grader in the world. The class’ work will be displayed on a bulletin board which will allow the entire school to marvel at their might! Ms. Tornquist led students in a group discussion about heroes and what makes someone a hero. Students broke into pairs to discuss what makes someone brave and heroic. Students discussed the heroes of September 11th and heroes in our own community. As a closing activity, students worked on a craft in the shape of a heart with the American flag. Two towers were fixed to the heart in remembrance of all the heroes of 9/11. HEHNLY STUDENTS REMEMBER SEPT 11TH Fourteen years after the tragic events of September 11th, the students at the Frank K. Hehnly School stood together to show their patriotism and love for America. The students showed solidarity by wearing red, white and blue, and sang patriotic songs during the school’s remembrance assembly. “The events of September 11th were tragic and are now engrained in America’s history,” explained Shirley Bergin, Principal of Hehnly School. “We want the children of our school to be aware of this day and have the chance to honor those who lost their lives both in the Towers and heroically trying to save others.” In addition, the fourth and fifth grade students at Hehnly School were part of a special assembly where they were able to view steel that was taken from the Twin Towers as part of a “Mobile Memorial” that was provided by the Township. USE WE ANIC ORG EAT M “The students were in awe that a piece of these historic buildings were in front of their eyes,” added Bergin. “It was a very moving experience for our students.” (above) Students is Mrs. Arrowood’s class at Hehnly School show their patriotism for America by wearing red, white and blue on September 11th. Johnson High School Crusader Athletic Booster Club held their first meeting of the year. In attendance at the packed house were coaches, players, and parents who had the opportunity to meet the fall coaches and listen to them speak on behalf of their teams in addition to listening to a guest speaker who talked about maximizing your high school athletic experience. John McCarthy of Montclair State University was a guest speaker. John is an award-winning teacher, author, and coach who captivated student athletes, coaches, and parents alike with his discussions on high school athletics. The symposium focused on talking to the audience on numerous topics related to high school athletics today. Furthermore, John McCarthy talked about excerpts from his book, What Would Yogi Do?, which provided guidelines for athletes, coaches, and parents who love sports. The highlight of the evening was when John McCarthy introduced surprise guest speaker Gian Paul Gonzalez. Gian Paul Gonzalez's program, "Going All In", discussed the keys to helping empower the student athletes to truly commit to goals despite the obstacles that will try to hinder the type of commitment they will need for success. Gonzalez implored the audience to let ALL IN be more than just a slogan, but become a lifestyle that will impact all parts of their life. Gonzalez is a social studies teacher in Union County, NJ and has been delivering his message to athletics teams, Fortune 500 companies, high schools and churches. He was a former NCAA Division III All-American first team basketball player at Montclair State University. Gonzalez played in the NBA Summer League in 2007. Hehnly Elementary School in Clark recently indulged in a sensory experience in the classroom. The coteachers concealed pieces of watermelon and asked the students to attempt to guess what the hidden mystery item was allowing them to use single senses at a time to aid them. Having successfully identified the fruit, the students were asked to reflect on the abilities which enabled them to properly recognize the pieces of watermelon. Mrs. Conner and Iden’s students then wrote short descriptive pieces regarding how each of their five senses aided them in discovering the hidden identity of the mystery item. As an extension to this activity, students were asked to contemplate how each of the five senses combine to allow us to go about our daily lives.
