Kumpf Middle School has earned the 12th spot on the list of schools who have been identified as high-performing, and have established norms, structures, and support that will sustain academic and overall excellence. As there are 2,500 middle schools in the state of New Jersey, this is an incredible accomplishment for our students, families, School Board, school community, and our exceptional teachers! What is Schools to Watch? “Schools to Watch is an initiative launched by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform in 1999. Through the Schools to Watch initiative, the National Forum identifies schools across the United States that are well on their way to meeting the Forum’s criteria for high performance. Forum members believe that three things are true of high-performing middle-grades schools: They are academically excellent - these schools challenge all students to use their minds well. They are developmentally responsive – these schools are sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescence. They are socially equitable – these schools are democratic and fair, providing every student with high-quality teachers, resources, and supports. To achieve this level of performance, high-performing schools establish norms, structures, and organizational arrangements to support and sustain their trajectory toward excellence. They have a sense of purpose that drives every facet of practice and decision-making.” Congratulations to the entire Clark Township Middle School Community for providing superior quality programs for our students. A special thanks to our highly talented and exceptionally diligent teachers for commitment to continuous improvements and for ensuring that all students have ample opportunity and support to meet or exceed his/her greatest potential every day. Johnson High School has selected to bring Jim Jacobs’ and Warren Casey’s Grease to the Clark community stage. The 1971 musical, set in 1959, follows working-class high school teenagers as they navigate the complexities of love. It must be noted that the musical is the No. 1 highest-grossing musical in the United States. Grease was an exciting choice for ALJ due to the connection that is forged between people of all ages, as the musical explores the themes of love, friendship, adolescent rebellion, class-consciousness and conflict. The cast of more than 20 students from the school has devoted months to demanding practice schedules for acting, singing, and choreography. ALJ English Teacher, Mr. Peter Nevargic, a former thespian, Arthur L. Johnson alumni, and 2013 Teacher of the Year has directed and led the cast in production. Mr. Nevargic has indicated that the cast, crew, and all involved have been working tirelessly to create indelible experiences for all spectators. The production will include some of the original and loved score: “Greased Lightning’,” “Beauty School Dropout” and “Summer Nights,” among many others. Students were led in choreography by Briana Emma ALJ alumni. Music will be directed by Mrs. Rachel Bollaro, Arthur L. Johnson High School 2014 Teacher of the Year. Members of the fourth and fifth grade classes were also transformed into waiters and waitresses who completed their customers' book orders and served them tasty treats to enjoy as they read their favorite stories. What better way to rediscover the magic of reading, then to spend quality time reading together as a family in the setting of your very own school. The PTA would like to thank 7-11 and TD Bank for their generous donations. The Kiwanis Club of Clark is switching up their annual fundraiser from the Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner that they held yearly for almost two decades to a flapjack fundraiser that will be held on Saturday, March 29 from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Applebee’s Restaurant in the Woodbridge Mall is the host location and will serve a breakfast of two pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and coffee, tea or juice. Tickets for adults are $10 and $6 for children under 12. “We’re shaking things up a bit again this year,” President Elect Jim Dougherty said of the pancake breakfast. For years we were at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clark serving spaghetti and meatballs, but have decided it is better for us to partner with the kind folks at Applebee to do the cooking.” The Key Club of ALJ, one of the youth sponsored clubs in Clark, will act as servers. Proceeds from the event will support the scholarships for seniors at Johnson High School who are actively involved in community service. Last year the club joined up with the national flapjack fundraiser project at Applebee's and loved the special attention to detail that Applebee’s showed the customers. “We had a wonderful turnout last year at the Linden location and trust that this year’s location of the Woodbridge Mall will encourage people to come have breakfast with us and then shop at the mall!” said President Susan Dougherty. To reserve tickets, place an advertisement in the Flapjack Booklet, or donate items to be raffled off at the breakfast, call 732-382-367. The Clark Kiwanis Club is the proud sponsor of the K-Kids Clubs at Hehnly and Valley Road Schools as well as the Builders Club at Carl Kumpf and the ALJ Key Club. For more information about the international philanthropic club that is “changing the world one child and one community at a time,” contact Susan Dougherty at the above number. CLARK MONTHLY • Page 17 • March 2014 CRUSADER ATHLETICS LEADERSHIP COUNCIL MARINE CORP LEADERSHIP Members of the Crusader Athletic Leadership Council were involved in the Marine Corps Leadership Seminar on February 27th. The Marine Corps Leadership Seminar is built around the Marine Corps 14 Leadership Traits and 11 Leadership Principles which are the hallmark of the United States Marine Corps. A presentation was given to conduct an interactive guided discussion explaining and defining the 14 Leadership Traits and 11 Leadership Principles. The presentation included scenario based examples in which students working in groups identify how they would approach and act in a given scenario utilizing the Leadership Traits and Principals. This seminar provided the students and members of the Crusader Athletic Leadership Council with leadership strategies and techniques to assist with their high school athletics, academic effort, and overall personal development. Gus Kalikas, Athletic Director at Arthur L. Johnson High School, had this to say about the event “The C.A.L.C. was thrilled to be able to host Sergeant McCullar and the Marine Leadership Seminar at our Crusader Athletic Leadership Council Meeting. Our Student Athletes learned a lot through both talking about aspects of leadership and role playing various scenarios that integrated the Leadership Traits that were discussed. There is no doubt in my mind that our student athletes will be able to employ these traits in the classrooms and on the fields in order to make themselves better students, athletes, and citizens.” The C.A.L.C. would like to thank Sergeant McCullar for attended the meeting and assisting the Student Athletes of Arthur L. Johnson High School in continuing to strive for excellence. CARNIVAL FOR “FAMILY FUN NIGHT” "Family Fun Night" was held at Valley Road School on February 21st. Many VRS families came out to enjoy carnival games, face painting, popcorn and cotton candy! Everyone listened to great music as the DJ raffled off goldfish to VRS students. Jenise and Jorge Tapia worked with "Animal Crackers" who donated 100 goldfish to support our event. The entire school community came together to make the evening an unforgettable one. A special thank you went to the ALJ Key Club members who helped the event run smoothly in more ways than one and to the members of Cadette Troop #361(former VRS students) who volunteered their time to face paint and bring smiles to so many faces!
