President's Message Marie Blake W e finished off 2012 with a bang by h o st i n g t h e Wo r l d G a l l o way Congress in Guelph, Ontario with over 120 guests from twelve countries. It always great to visit with Galloway breeders from around the world. Remember, you are always welcome in Canada. It was a great success, thanks to the hard work of the organizing committee. We enjoyed a mild winter in south western Ontario, which made calving a little easier for many breeders. January saw a couple of breeders take cattle to Denver, Colorado for the National Western Stock Show. These Canadian cattle were very successful in both the show ring and sales arena. We would like to thank our American hosts for their wonderful hospitality during our stay. We had our annual Galloway meeting in Red Deer, Alberta in July. New things were proposed and we look forward to future advancements in the breed. There will be a new fee schedule for 2014. We also have interest from junior members showing Galloway’s in British Columbia. We visited several local breeder’s and received great hospitality. It was wonderful to see how well the grass grows in the Red Deer area. The fall continued to be busy with fall fairs and farm shows in the East and Farmfair International in Edmonton. Galloway breeders did well here. (See the Alberta Report.) We also have an increase in the number of juniors showing Galloway’s this year. So good luck to all exhibitors. My youngest daughter, Patti, had the opportunity to visit Australia earlier in the year and participate in a few Galloway shows. Mnay thanks for to the warm welcome she received. I hope everyone has a great 2014. Best wishes fellow Galloway members, Marie Blake Marketing Galloways – 2012 Galloway World Congress Alistair McIlwraith had the privilege in October 2012 of joining a congenial group of Galloway breeders Russel Horvey (which is to say I Big Deal Galloways, met a group of wonderful people and had GallowayWorld.org. After the tribulation of a very wet 2012, this summer has been so much easier for all, stock have been content on summer pastures, harvest has happened when it should and with cattle and sheep still enjoying this mild spell there has not been the need to buy extra feeding. Galloways here in the UK and Ireland have also enjoyed a successful and busy year, the year starts with the spring show and sale held in Castle Douglas, once again Galloways were in demand, vendors were happy with the trade and some purchasers went away empty handed. It was great to see the McMillan family win the trophy after trying for all these years. We welcomed many overseas visitors to the show this year and we would be delighted to help plan your trip to the show or at any other time of the year. All our activities are posted on our web site www.gallowaycattlesociety.co.uk and Facebook, including updates on our Young Members Group, this Group has great enthusiasms and will be travelling to Germany’s “Green Week”, if you see them say hello. Now the year is nearly over, our thoughts are turning to next year, we would be delighted to welcome you to our main sale held in Castle Douglas on 13th and 14th of February and we look forward to meeting as many of you at the World Congress in Germany and of course welcoming you to the UK for the World Congress in 2016. Wishing you all a very happy and successful 2014. 2014 Castle Douglas Spring Sale t was the young members Chairman and Vice Chairman who had the enviable job of placing the excellent cattle at the Society’s premier show and sale held at Castle Douglas I Mr Iain Finlay from the renowned Blackcraig found his Overall Male Champion from the Senior Bull Class, Kirkstead Taurus from the McClymont family, Kirkstead, Yarrow, this much fancied bull is by the well-known sire Braveheart of Gall-way and out of Nerys Ingrid of Nether Cleugh sold for 7000gns ($12,700) to Klondyke Farms Ltd, Shancastle, Moniaive. With record-breaking heat, severe bushfires, extreme rainfall and damaging flooding being experienced Australia wide over the past twelve months, many people have faced testing times managing feed reserves and keeping their cattle in good order. Despite these challenges, the Galloway cattle presented at field days, carcase competitions and shows were a real credit to their owners, and great examples of the Galloway family. Galloways were represented at many field days across Australia, and also presented at shows around the nation, with some fabulous results. There were Galloways and Miniature Galloways featuring in the interbreed results at the Royal Melbourne Show and Royal Bathurst Shows in particular, as well as at the many regional shows. Galloways have also featured in the placings at carcase competitions at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the National Beef Show, doing particularly well in the virtual taste tests. The Galloway Family National Show and Sale was held in conjunction with the 22 Canadian Galloway Advance National Beef Show at Bendigo, Victoria in May 2013. It is many years since the last National Show and Sale, which was held at Albury, and it was great to see the level of support received from exhibitors and the many spectators who made the effort to attend. Galloways, Belted Galloways and Miniature Galloways were judged in the own classes. Southern Cross El Toro, a black Galloway bull owned by Glenburn Station Pty Ltd was awarded Supreme Galloway exhibit. The five year old bull weighed in a 1,103 kg and boasted an eye muscle area of 136cm. The judge commented that he is hard to fault, with a good front end, natural fleshing and being structurally correct. There were 9 Belted Galloway exhibitors, with Pine Gully Park Gwendolyn, owned by the Heazlewood Family, being awarded Supreme Belted Galloway exhibit. This heifer was 17 months old, and the judge commented on her strong spine and extra length of body. The Supreme Miniature Galloway exhibit was Wilkamdai Giovanni, owned by Cameron and Di Woolfe. This 28 month old miniature Belted Galloway bull weighed in at 650kg, with a 120cm eye muscle area. These three Supreme Champions were then brought together with Southern Cross El Toro being awarded Supreme Galloway Family Exhibit. The Association’s Annual General Meeting was held in conjunction with the National Show and Sale, and approximately 25% of the membership attended. This was a great result and the Committee was pleased that so many made the effort to attend both the AGM and National Show and Sale, making it a very successful weekend. Members were advised at this meeting of the instigation of two perpetual awards – The Shiralee Tomahawk Memorial Trophy to be awarded annually to the owner of a Belted Galloway achieving the highest points in a carcase competition, and the Frank Allen Memorial Trophy also to be awarded annually to a Galloway, Belted Galloway or miniature Galloway achieving the highest points in a carcase competition. It is to be hoped that these trophies will encourage more members to enter their cattle in carcase competitions. Please contact the Association if you are visiting Australia and we will be happy to put you in touch with any breeders in the areas you are visiting. © Copyright 2014 2014 CDN Galloway Advance pages 19-26:Layout 1 1/2/2014 6:03 PM Page 23 Ferme du Rapide senc.
