Caring South Shore Hospital ISSUE 20 • Sum mer 2012 News for Donors & Supporters Jump Right in. The Water is Great! Thomas J. McCarthy Many raindrops make an ocean…this ancient Asian saying should have special meaning for everyone on the South Shore. That is because each one of us can make a small contribution, which when combined with others, leads to big advancements for our community’s health. Together, from children donating lemonade stand money to corporations donating millions, we make a powerful ocean of support for South Shore Hospital. You will read more about these many generous people in this annual report newsletter. In an effort to highlight the raindrops in our ocean, the volunteers and donors who work so hard to support our patients, we created a new awareness campaign called “South Shore Hospital Made Possible By…..” Fourteen of our supporters are featured in regional newspapers thanks to generous support from Wicked Local. You can also see them on our website, Facebook page, around the Hospital, or even on buses. Three samples are on pages 5-7 of this newsletter. These 14 supporters, and all of us involved with South Shore Hospital, know our donations help save lives and promote our overall quality of life as a region. We also know that the Hospital is a charity that depends on community generosity. Boston Broadcasting Legend Liz Walker Becomes A Friend Award-winning journalist and humanitarian Liz Walker accepts her honorary Friends membership from Friends President Tina Kosinski. Liz recently moderated Live Smart: Small Steps to Big Changes in Women’s Health, a free community benefits program of South Shore Hospital. n Donations–small or large–represent a real margin of difference. Consider these recent examples: •Putting advanced surgical equipment in the hands of our surgeons •Providing state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to fight cancer •Supporting critical steps for recovery by orthopedic patients •Giving a boost to caregivers who work to help patients heal in the comfort of their own homes •Funding the construction of 60 new private patient care rooms to meet the needs of the growing number of people choosing South Shore Hospital for care If you are among the thousands of raindrops creating our ocean, thank you. If haven’t yet donated, you have an opportunity to make a difference right now. Our Campaign for Healing, Caring and Comforting, has reached $36.5 million toward a minimum fund-raising goal of $40 million. Raising the remaining $3.5 million won’t be easy, but it can be achieved if we all do our share. Won’t you please add your “raindrop” (or many of them) to those of others? It takes only a few minutes to give at southshorehospital.org/donate. Thank you! n Presidents’ Circle Members Celebrate with the Celtics Dependable Cleaners President and CEO Christa Hagearty and her husband Dan Hagearty enjoyed an evening at the Boston Celtics game. Caregivers help patients remain at home while dealing with life-limiting illnesses and assist families with care and bereavement services. There is still time to donate to Hospice at southshorehospital.org/donate. n One team (below), of over 110 teams, represents South Shore Hospital employees supporting their Hospice colleagues. As she grew older, she was determined to make life brighter for children in the same situation. Diane Walters, standing, delivers a Walters visited a Build-A-Bear store, created donated teddy bear to Paige DiNatale, a stuffed animal, and asked her mother to a patient in the South Shore Hospital Pediatrics Unit. drive her to South Shore Hospital to deliver it to the pediatric unit. The nurses gave the fuzzy friend to a sick child to comfort him on the way to a diagnostic test. This act of kindness is more than many people ever do, but Walters wasn’t satisfied to stop there. Profile: donor by the Carrabes Family That one bear donation became two, then three, then four, then ten. Walters began to research different types of bears and decide what would bring the most joy to little patients. The Build-A-Bear staff noticed her frequent visits and inquired about her mission. They arranged for her to receive a grant from the company that covered some of her bear costs. But, Walters still wanted to help even more children. She needed funds to buy more teddy bears. She had a bright idea one day while feeding the chickens at her family’s home in Hull. She asked her mother if she could sell the eggs to her friends and neighbors to raise funds for the bears. A philanthropic entrepreneur was born. Walters took over the care of the chickens. Each day she feeds them, changes their hay and cleans their coop. She takes her responsibility and her charitable giving seriously. eful Joseph and Susan Carrabes live in Cohasset with their three children. “ Wanedwimereprsoessegrdatwith and the level of care whole compassion our family received. “ Walters has become a familiar face at South Shore Hospital’s pediatric unit. She has delivered dozens of teddy bears in the last three years. In addition to giving back to South Shore Hospital and managing her chickens, this 24-year-old special needs woman has a busy life in Hull. She is the oldest of five children. Walters is also a Special Olympian who has won both gold and silver medals in gymnastics competitions. Walters hopes that more people on the South Shore will think about creative ways to help patients. n We moved to the South Shore from Boston in 1996. While raising our three children, we became familiar with South Shore Hospital through visits to treat minor injuries and sicknesses. We had donated on and off over the years, but it wasn’t until we attended the 2008 Moonlight & Miracles Gala benefiting cancer care, at the invitation of our friend and Committee Member, Nancy Craven, that we really became strong supporters. The event really touched us – we walked away with a greater understanding of the Hospital’s goals and mission. Women’s South Shore Hospital h e a l t h C l a s s i c Hundreds Will Gather to Benefit Cardiovascular and Cancer Care Treat yourself to a day of golf and wellness. The Friends Women’s Health Classic is Monday, July 23 at the Cohasset Golf Club. Golfers can choose between the tournament and golf clinics. There will also be wellness clinics, including zumba, massage therapy, healthy cooking demonstrations, facials, yoga and pilates, and make-overs. All proceeds benefit women’s cardiovascular and cancer care programs at South Shore Hospital. Sponsor or register now at southshorehospital.org/events. n We’ve come to see South Shore Hospital as a really forward-thinking place with a strong sense of community. The Hospital’s interest in helping the people of the South Shore is authentic. When our 10-year-old son was admitted for a burst appendix, everyone from his doctor to the woman who delivered his meals genuinely cared about him. As a parent, it’s excruciating to watch your child go through something like that – to see your child scared and in pain. We were so grateful and impressed with the level of care and compassion our whole family received. Over the years, we have continued to contribute to South Shore Hospital, because we believe it is a valuable and important resource for our family. We have such confidence giving to the Hospital because we are impressed with how it spends its donations. For example, we had the opportunity to tour the Cancer Center when it first opened and were struck not only by the state-of-the-art design, but also the overall peaceful feeling of the place. What a wonderful option for families to seek care close to home, instead of having to make the sometimes grueling trip into Boston for treatment. South Shore Hospital is always motivated to improve its level of care, which is great, because at the end of the day, we all will probably be in position to need the Hospital. We hope you will do what we have done and support this important community resource. n CARING is published by South Shore Hospital Charitable Foundation, which is dedicated to generating support for South Shore Hospital, South Shore VNA, and Hospice of the South Shore. Help support the Hospital’s mission of healing, caring and comforting by calling Executive Director Kevin Courtney at (781) 624-8600 or visiting southshorehospital.org. Aubut …iconic community, sports, entertainment and media leaders giving and helping. They are all featured in this issue of our newsletter, and they are the “raindrops” creating the ocean of support described by Tom McCarthy in this newsletter. And, we are grateful to them all. Every donor listed on the following pages gave time, treasure or both to expand our mission of healing, caring and comforting. They were joined by hundreds of thousands of others, from throughout the South Shore and beyond. Their total giving added up to more than $15 million–the most support in one year in South Shore Hospital’s history. We treat these precious gifts with great care. And, I can assure you that this support was put to great use and is making a difference for our patients each and every day. Why do they give? I am always surprised that, when I thank these philanthropists, a common response is, “The pleasure is all ours.” Turning the tables, donors often thank me for what our caregivers have done for them and their families. It is humbling. And it makes me so proud of my colleagues, including medical staff and volunteers. It is my honor and privilege to be surrounded by so many people with a big heart and a caring spirit. Three cheers to you all. n Richard H. Aubut President/CEO South Shore Hospital Thank You!
