Thank you. From The Bridge by Commodore Sandra Sherman Commodore@southwesternyc.org N othing like starting off the Holiday Season with a Bang! Two days before Christmas, we had a small electrical “explosion” that impacted the power to B & C Docks, so probably not the type of Bang that everyone was expecting. I would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during the next week while Bob Soderberg and his team worked through all the issues to fix the problems. Additionally, a special Thank You to Dock Masters Robert Zanville and Frank Taliaferro for their support on the docks, Larry George for keeping the White Sea Bass pumps running, and Port Captain Tom Clark for the daily monitoring and communication with all the members who have boats on B & C Docks. Fortunately, thanks to all their efforts the power was fully restored on New Year’s Eve. Full details on the issues and resolution to the problem can be found in the Port Captain’s Report. coordination. John has coordinated most of the Bands that we have all enjoyed for as long as I can remember. I would like to thank John for all the wonderful music he has brought to the Club for all these years. Chef Danny once again out did himself; the dinner was amazing, as was the service, thanks to the efforts of Terra and Harper and the rest of the Team. Santa made his way to the Club again this year to ensure that all the kids were able to relay their wishes and have their photo taken. Thanks to the efforts of Susan OlsenRoll the 4-legged “kids” were also able to let Santa know what they wanted for Christmas. This year’s Santa Paws event was a huge success; we raised $1,675 for the animals in need at the San Diego Humane Society. Although I’m not a dog owner, I truly enjoyed hanging out with all the puppies that were able to enjoy the Speaking of New Year’s Eve, what a beautiful and Fun night that was at the Club. Linda Pearcy with the help of her husband Mark and Tricia & Mike Dolan turned the banquet room into a Red, White, & Blue wonderland. We danced in the New Year to the sounds of Cool Fever, thanks to John Trimpi for his final Band sunny day on the deck with their special menu items. Hope to see many of you at Mardi Gras on Feb 6 enjoying Cajun music and food. I hear there is going to be a Best Table Competition, so be sure to sign up and make a plan to decorate your table. I Vice Commodore’s Report by Vice Commodore Drew Bernet VCommodore@southwesternyc.org A s I write this article in early January, it feels as though there is as much water on deck as there is below the waterline. We need the rain, yes, but that weather surely puts a cold wet damper on fishing and sailing for all but the hardiest of us. But it does give us contrast and helps us look forward to the glorious San Diego weather ahead. SWYC their home so I want to urge you to support them in their quest. We still have time to contribute to the Olympic Campaigns of Briana Provancha and Caleb Paine. Your December Club statement contained an invitation to contribute via the Southwestern Junior Foundation. Additional information can be obtained from the Front Office. By tradition, the Vice Commodore and/or the V/C’s We are very fortunate to have two Olympians who call spouse sponsors a monthly event which has taken many Continued on page 3 FEBRUARY, 2016 / MOORING LINE 1 Welcome Aboard by Rear Commodore Russ Cornelius RCommodore@southwesternyc.org his past month’s attendance at the Big Bay Boat Show was another success. We got to share the story of SWYC with a lot of boaters. Huge thanks goes out to Don Freeman for organizing it this year. And to all of the volunteers who manned T have them fully on board now. They proudly own a 34’ Fu Hwa trawler. They have been spending a lot of weekend evenings at SWYC, so they got to know four members now wanting to sponsor them; Doug Holthaus, Khris & Allen Hobbs the booth – also a big thanks. For that moment in and Roy Miles. Both are San Diego natives. Bobbie has always had a love for boats and the water. She belonged to another yacht club when they met. She is retired from the CHP as a dispatcher and now owns her own massage studio in Pacific Beach. Dennis is a time, you were the face of SWYC – and you did a fine job. As in years past, I anticipate a great turnout of prospective members at the open house following the boat show. This year it will be on Saturday, February 27. If you are around the Club, go out of your way to greet the prospects. Speaking of prospects, the Board of Directors approved the following at the December meeting. Steve and Jenifer Muse are a pretty darn adventurous couple who have joined us as Regular Members. They “met” SWYC when Steve sailed in the US Disabled Sailing Championships in 2010, which, as you know, was hosted by SWYC. That was when he met his sponsors, Carolyn Sherman and Theresa Smullen. For over 25 years, Steve had been an avid rock and ice climber as well as a mountain bike rider. In 2004, Steve was in an auto accident that made him an incomplete quadriplegic. Steve describes that as someone who has full use of his hands, arms and chest. From the waist down he is paralyzed. Since then Steve has climbed El Cap in Yosemite, and has gotten involved with sailing via Challenged America. Jennifer enjoys photography and has captured several of Steve’s adventures. They have two adult children; one finishing college and the other living at home, which has been very helpful for Steve. Steve and Jennifer already have many friends at the Club, so their joining just seems like a very logical step. They are already active in the Club and participating on committees. Dennis and Bobbie Irwin are new Flag members who have been visiting SWYC for years. It is nice to 2 MOORING LINE / FEBRUARY, 2016 retired international airline pilot from US Airways. He built his first boat at the age of 14. In addition to their boat, they also own a small aircraft – both being pilots. For Joe and Alison Kruchek, Sea Trial Participants, it started in 1993 when they got married and honeymooned on their first sailboat. Since then they have kept updating their vessel choice, even moving to a Grand Banks Eastbay and Navigator before deciding they wanted to return to sailing. They now are prideful owners of Odyssey, a 45.2 Jenneau kept across the way at Kona Marina. Joe has been a practicing attorney in Arizona for the last 30 years. He also has a master’s in music (The Follies, anyone???). He started sailing when he was 13. He fondly recalls his 10’ dagger board row/sail boat that he spent a lot of time tipping over, bailing out and teaching himself some sailing fundamentals. Alison takes care of the home front, including her 90-year-old mother, two cats, a dog and 100 tropical African fish. Besides the water, she loves gardening, cooking/baking reading and people. And, she has launched a new website for their adventures on their Jeanneau. www.cruisingsouthern-california.com. While they still call Arizona home, they now have a home in Temecula. It has become their base. Welcome to all of you and be sure to embrace all that SWYC has to offer you. See you around the club. I News from the Social Scene by Keith Robertson, Social Committee Chair T he days are starting to get longer and, as I write, El Nino is coming on strong just to let us know that winter is just getting started! Speaking of winter, your Social Committee has some fun events planned to help you endure old man winter (yeah, right)! Isn’t it great to live in San Diego? On April 15, 1912, the Royal Mail Ship Titanic sank Plan on attending our Mardi Gras celebration on February 6 with the New Orleans style band; King Kake. On February 19, Night Shift will be playing for your dancing pleasure. March 17 will be our celebration of St. Patrick’s Day which is always a fun time and on March 5….The return of the SWYC Dog Show!! Last year, this was a truly enjoyable and successful event for both members and pooches. on the Titanic complete with a quartet playing Vice Commodore’s Report... events will benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society of San Diego. The next luncheon will be held on Wednesday, February 10. I want to extend a BIG thanks to Don Freeman, Michael Mooradian and the scores of Club members who volunteered to staff our booth at the San Diego Boat Show toward the end of last dinner in the first class dining room of this luxury liner has been a menu of celebration and remembrance for many throughout the years. The cousins of my Father’s Godparents also perished on the ship that night so I have a personal connection to the event. On April 23, we will commemorate the event with our own Last Dinner classical music for your entertainment. The dinner will be held in the Staff Commodore’s room so seating will be limited. Look for more information as we get closer to the event. Despite the cold and wet weather, let’s all enjoy the pleasures that our wonderful club has to offer. See you around the club! I Continued from page 1 forms as a luncheon, a tea or a happy hour which have benefitted a local charity. This year those after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The January. This is an important way to “get the word out” about the Club we all enjoy so much. And lastly, if you had not heard, we want to congratulate our past Port Captain and Chaplain, Mr. Ron Dixon for his recognition by the San Diego City Council on 12 January which was declared Ron “Cannonman” Dixon Day in San Diego. A recognition so richly deserved. See you at the Club! I FEBRUARY, 2016 / MOORING LINE 3 Port Captain’s Report by Port Captain Tom Clark PortCaptain@southwesternyc.org “The chance for mistakes is about equal to the number of crew squared” - Ted Turner W ow, with the last two weeks of December 2015 and the first two weeks of January 2016 Southwestern Yacht Club has been on quite a ride! Starting with the lunar high tides, the electrical power outages to B & C Docks and now with the El Niño rains finally arriving, we have had problems both on the water and in our parking lot. Let me tell you that Southwestern Yacht Club’s entire maintenance staff have been very busy and are performing at a very high level with all that has been going on, including the set-up and take down for New Year’s Eve and Day. Here’s a brief recap on the power outage to B & C Docks. December 22, 2015, Robert Zanville in B-3 noticed that his electric fan’s power was fluctuating above his berth. Rob shortly determined that the problem wasn’t isolated to just his slip’s electrical pedestal and reported B Dock’s problem with a Work Order to Maintenance. An electrical contractor was called out to trouble-shoot the problem. It was determined that the power fluctuation was occurring on both B & C Docks. After trying to come up with a workaround to keep power to both docks, it was determined that there could only be one dock that would be able to maintain stable power, so the power to C Dock was shut down on Christmas Eve. Notifications to members on C Dock were made on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Monday, December 28, the electricians returned and determined that one leg of the 3-phase electrical power that runs from the Annex’s electrical panel to the pull boxes next to the riprap by A & B gangway 4 MOORING LINE / FEBRUARY, 2016 to the B & C gangway had failed. That failure was in the wire conduit that runs from B & C dock gangway pull box to a pull station directly next to the club’s outside deck. On December 30, the faulty aluminum wire was pulled out of the conduit and showed signs of a major short 28’ from the deck-side pull box. SWYC staff dug an inspection pothole to see if damage to the conduit had caused this one wire to fail, and there was no damage. There was an extra wire in the conduit and the electricians placed a meter on the remaining three wires and determined that they were still good. With everything seeming to check out, power was restored to B & C Docks on the afternoon of December 30. That evening with the 9 PM high tide, power failed again to both docks. On December 31, all three wires were pulled from the conduit. Apparent physical damage to the insulation on two of the wires caused the short. New copper wire was pulled in and power was again restored to both docks. During this time, SWYC members were continuously informed via email or Halyard updates. A complete SWYC site survey is planned to determine the stability of the entire dock electrical power grid and recommendations for maintenance or replacement will be submitted to the Board of Directors. Now for what’s been going on with the storms. Several boats have had broken dock lines that were replaced by either the Dockmasters or SWYC Maintenance staff. During the dock walks, I’ve noted eleven (11) members’ boats that need their dock lines replaced. A number of boats have been retied to keep their bows/anchors from extending over the dock walkway. Dinghies and tenders that have not been covered have needed to be pumped out. The biggest problem, however, is that most owners are not properly protecting their shore power electrical cords. Shore power cords must be marine grade and have moisture protection to protect the plugs from shorting out due to corrosion. A separate Halyard will be coming out to review Electrical Boating Safety. Within the next month, parking stickers will be issued for 2016 along with a sticker for bicycles and for vessels in the Dinghy, Kayak and Paddle Board racks. As Members, you are responsible for getting those stickers on and maintaining them in good condition. See you around the Club. I B AROUND THE CL S W U NE Cannon Man! by Arlene Dixon C lub member Ron Dixon has been sounding the charge for the San Diego Chargers since 1980. He can be seen and heard at every home game, firing the cannon when the Chargers score. Ron was honored by the City of San Diego with a proclamation declaring that January 12, 2015, be known as Ron "Cannon Man" Dixon Day. This proclamation was presented by Councilman Scott Sherman who just happens to be our Commodore Sandra Sherman's brother. In addition to serving our Club on committees, the Board of Directors and as Club Chaplain, Ron has served our community for many years for which he was also honored. This coming May, the cannon will be used to signal the opening of our yachting season at Opening Day. Stop by to say hi and get a picture. Ron will always be known as the ultimate fan, Cannon Man. FEBRUARY, 2016 / MOORING LINE 5 Junior News by Junior Commodore Emma Batcher H appy New Year to everyone at Southwestern Yacht Club! My name is Emma Batcher. I’m a third generation SWYC member and am honored to be this year's Junior Commodore. I’ll be working with the following Junior Officers; Kyle Farmer as our Vice Commodore, Jim Hemmi as our Rear Commodore, Kale’a Woodard as our Secretary, Ryan Farmer as our Treasurer, Ethan Turner as our Angler’s Fleet Captain and Carter Vachon as our Sabot Fleet Captain. It’s going to be a great year. Holidays are crazy no matter what you do, but this year's juniors were very busy this holiday season. A lot of local junior sailors, including myself, left Christmas Day for Miami, Florida to participate in the Orange Bowl Regatta. When I arrived, I was excited to see that SWYC’s very own Briana Provanacha would be my coach. It was nice to know that, even when I go across the country to sail, I see friendly and familiar faces. At Orange Bowl my skipper, Amanda Majernik (SDYC) and I placed 18th out of 88 boats. After Orange Bowl some of our juniors went off to compete in the PCISA Rose Bowl Regatta. Sailing for Point Loma High School, SWYC Jr. member, Jack McGraw, and his crew Katharine Bowman earned first place in Gold Fleet. Kyle Farmer and his crew Neal sailed for Point Loma H.S. at the last PCISA SoCal at Mission Bay Yacht Club and placed sixth in Silver Fleet out of 23 boats. SWYC’s juniors have four new CFJ’s that can't wait to be sailed by the Jr. members and the local high school sailing teams. Finally, I would like to congratulate Jack McGraw for being named as one of Jobson’s Junior All-Stars for 2016! What a huge honor. Again, I’m looking forward to a fun and successful year and hope that all of our Junior sailors will continue to SAIL FAST. I Santa Paws by Susan Olsen-Roll A BIG thank you to so many members and guests who came out to support “Santa Paws” on December 13! Especially to photographer, Jeff Spangler and to Nick Caldwell (who brought Santa), and all the volunteers! It was a perfect summy San Diego day with kids, dogs and adults alike enjoying the day. We are pleased to share that together we raised $1,675.00 for the animals in need at San Diego Humane Society. Every dog “guest” received a holiday plush toy and treats! Then had their picture taken with Santa. We had over 60 dogs attend with their families. See you next year! 6 I MOORING LINE / FEBRUARY, 2016 A SWYC Sail Fleet by Carolyn Sherman, SWYC Sail Fleet Captain s isn’t unusual, December was jampacked with activities. Sail Fleet’s annual awards dinner and White Elephant Gift Exchange followed the Commodore’s Ball. The room was filled to capacity. Our new Commodore, Sandra Sherman, MC’d the White Elephant Gift Exchange as she has since the event began. This is everyone’s party to look forward to, and this year was certainly no exception. With almost 100 people opening gifts, stealing gifts, and sometimes hiding the really good ones, a great time was had by all. There were award winners of particular note: Dave Baer, recipient of the Crystal Sail Award; Terry Gleeson was acknowledged as One Design Racer of the Year; Brad Alberts won Inshore Racer of the Year; Mike Roach won Offshore Racer of the Year; Harry Zanville was honored as Sailor of the Year and Sandra Sherman (who I’m proud to call our Commodore and my daughter) and I won the Cutty Sark Perpetual Trophy. Don Stouder wrapped up year-end festivities by hosting SWYC’s entire Race Committee at the annual RC appreciation party. January began as it always does on New Year’s Day with SDYC’s annual no wind fest (officially called New Year’s Day Race). It was a beautiful, sunshiny day and the wind eventually reached maybe 8 knots. Those 8 knots were enough for a couple of SWYC standouts to sail to victory in their respective classes. Alec Oberschmidt sailed Staghound to a second place finish in Class 1 and Ryan Hunter, sailing with Brad Milligan on his Viper, Sinnerman, took first place in Class 3. The Cabrillo Series which began on January 23rd will once again venture into Mexican waters in 2016. Cabrillo I was sailed, as it has traditionally been for years, around North and Middle Coronado Islands. Traditionally Cabrillos II and III were sailed around “Sugarloaf Rock,” approximately 30 miles south, and around a buoy just west of Rosarita Beach, then around South Coronado Island and home. This year Cabrillos II and III have been completely re-designed to use all of the Coronado Islands in what I like to call a “slalom type course.” Big thanks are due to Brad Alberts for his time and creativity in this year’s re-designed courses. Cabrillos II and III will be raced in February and March. It is our hope that these new courses will provide interesting tactical and navigational challenges so that participation will be even greater than in previous years. If you like offshore racing and are interested in trying these new challenging courses, click on the Notice of Race with course charts attached at http://www.southwesternyc.org/files/2016%20 Cabrillo%20Series%20NoR%20%5B2%5D.pdf February is always a busy month for Don Stouder and SWYC’s Race Committee. The Cabrillo races normally finish well into the night and our RC is well known for, in spite of the late hour, to always be there to finish each and every racer. In addition to Cabrillo II on Feb. 6, the SCYA MidWinters will be sailed on Feb. 20. Our RC will once again be busy as they run 3 windward/leeward races in the Coronado Roads. Thanks in advance for what I know will be a job well done. Hope to see all of you around the Club and around the race course. In honor of this event, the History Committee has arranged for the 1964 Finn Plaque to be re-constituted and displayed in our clubhouse. Chair Kay Harry and Co-Chair S/C Roy Benstead, presented this replica to Commodore Sandra Sherman on New Years Eve 2015. I n 1963, the U.S.A. Finn National Committee decided to hold their National Championship in San Diego the following year. The reason for that was that 1964 was an Olympic year and the waters off San Diego were similar to the waters off Enoshima, Japan, where the Finn event was to be held. May it continue to mark the time with its Eight Bell chime for many years to come. I Southwestern Yacht Club and San Diego Yacht Club were the co-hosts for this championship with a joint race committee and each club looking after approximately half of the 65-boat fleet. Southwestern Yacht Club cleared the Small Boat Yard to make room for them all. A seasoned team of club members then got ready for the launching and recovery of these single-handed racing dinghy’s. Each boat trailer was marked with the yacht’s sail number and stored in order. As they arrived after each day’s sailing, the shore team had the hoist and trailer ready to haul out each boats quickly in time for the next. The boats were back in their assigned spaces in a flash. The joint race committee were just as organized. Starting a 65 boat fleet is never easy, but they did a great job. There was only one general recall. A few weeks after the event, the club received a very special token of gratitude from the USA Finn National Committee. It was a Seth Thomas Ship’s Clock mounted on a walnut plaque.
