Ombre highlights is a sizzling hot hair
trend right now, and is great news for ladies
who don’t want to be constantly getting
their roots ‘touched up’. Hair is coloured
darker near the roots and lighter towards
ends, such as a chestnut brown fading
into caramel blonde. Coupled with
the beautiful curls of Kimage’s

will definitely turn heads.

A Helping Hand
For the Elderly
Development, Youth and Sport) and the National Council of
Social Services.
Mr Wong Lit Shoon, Director of SAGE Counselling
Thanks to the Seniors Helpline at SAGE
Counselling Centre, located at #06-04 JP1,
our older citizens always have someone
they can turn to in times of need. We spoke
to Mr Wong Lit Shoon, Director of SAGE
Counselling, and kind volunteers Mary and
Abigail, to find out more about how SAGE
Counselling is helping Singaporeans age
gracefully and happily.
THE EVOLUTION OF SAGE
SAGE, the parent organisation of SAGE Counselling, is
36 years old this year. This wonderful organisation can be
traced all the way back to 1977 when a group of good-hearted
professionals, led by Dr Lim Chan Yong and former MP Mr
Chan Chee Seng, formed an organisation called Singapore
Action Group for Elders (SAGE) to look into the social,
recreational and employment issues for older people.
Lit Shoon explained that, since 1991, SAGE Counselling
has been fully funded by the Ministry of Social and
Family Development (formerly Ministry of Community
have a high tolerance level for pain, suffering and loss due to
the trials and tribulations they have already endured. Problems
that would faze and topple their younger counterparts pale in
comparison to what they have encountered and survived.
“Many older people will actually say they have no
problems, but actually they are facing many invisible or
potential problems. Many of them have already faced all
kinds of losses in their lives, so minor problems are nothing
to them,” explained Lit Shoon. “It’s not so much of denial as
resistance. Often, we have to help them identify and address
their problems. It can take some time,” he added, with an air
of infinite patience.
“A lot of my callers are very, very lonely,” said Mary, a
volunteer of 20 years. “And as the years go by, I realise that
many of them feel more at ease talking to an older person,”
she added, declining to reveal her exact age.
VOLUNTEERING, A SERIOUS COMMITMENT
At SAGE Counselling, volunteering is not taken lightly. All
volunteers undergo comprehensive basic training lasting three
months.
Mary and Abigail each regularly man the helpline once
a week in 4-hour shifts. On listening to these very good
listeners, we realised that each brought different strengths
to the table – or rather, the telephone. Mary, we dubbed ‘the
sympathetic ear’ whereas Abigail we dubbed ‘the networker’.
While Mary brings her vast experience to her ‘job’ of
providing solace and advice to her clients, often simply being
that ‘someone to talk to’ that her lonely clients crave, Abigail
is an energetic connector of people to resources.
“Since joining the Helpline, I’ve learned that there are a lot
of avenues to help the poor and the elderly. We are not alone
in this world when we face problems. As volunteers, we are
equipped with a vast pool of data and information with which
to help our callers,” said Abigail.
This pool of data enables the volunteers to refer their
clients to organisations where they can seek free legal
assistance, medical care and social workers. Housecleaning
services are also available for a nominal fee to low-income
elderly through NTUC Eldercare and St Luke’s Eldercare.
VOLUNTEERING, A SERIOUS COMMITMENT
When we asked Lit Shoon to describe a client whom SAGE

Wise Peeps
Issue 10: 16 - 29 August 2013 JPeeps P11
Welcome to our second installment of Wise Peeps. As the saying goes, problems shared are problems halved. Soak up the kind words of
wisdom from experienced counsellors from Youth Centre (Jurong), operated by Singapore Children’s Society, and YAH! Community College,
a tenant in our Community Hub on Level 6 of JP1.
For the Young
For the Elderly
Dear Counsellor,
Dear Counsellor,
I am a 17-year-old boy. I have liked a girl for quite some time and I thought that
I liked her a lot. But another girl appeared on the scene and my heart started
to sway. Now I have also developed feelings for this new girl. What should I do?
Should I choose the new girl instead? Help!
I am 58 years old and have not been sleeping well for the past few nights. I keep
tossing and turning on my bed, and have trouble falling asleep worrying about my
work and finances. When I wake up in the middle of the night, I can’t fall back to
sleep. Often, I wake up feeling more tired, not refreshed, and am excessively tired
during the day. What might be the causes of my sleepless nights? How many hours
should a senior sleep? Am I having insomnia? How can I get a good night’s sleep?
Torn
Sleepless Oldman
Dear Torn,
Dear Sleepless Oldman,
Thank you for sharing. First, I would like you to know that there is a difference between
liking someone and loving someone. In our lives, we will experience a lot of crushes
that will make our hearts beat faster. It is important to then distinguish between having
a crush on someone and loving someone.
You’re certainly not alone if you’re suffering
from symptoms of insomnia. Regardless of age,
doctors estimate 10 to 30 per cent of the population here have
insomnia. The Singapore Sleep Society surveyed nearly 400
junior college students and found that 97 per cent feel drowsy during class and three
in 10 drink caffeinated beverages to stay awake during the day.
There is no definite answer as to whom you should choose as you must make the
decision yourself. Some people may advise you to go for the new girl, and say
that falling for her means that you actually do not like the previous girl that much.
However, I think it is very important for you to ask yourself what it is that you actually
want. I think that before you decide to get into a relationship with a girl, you should
understand yourself better first, which means knowing what kind of girl you are
looking for and whether are you willing to
commit to a relationship. The key to a
successful relationship is commitment.
Commitment will imply that you should
be faithful to one girl, both physically
and emotionally.
Often, sleep problems are related to mood problems. Ask yourself if you have been
experiencing mood swings, or frequent feelings of irritability. Sleep usually gets better
when the stress or anxiety goes away. Try talking to someone you trust about your work
and finances instead of just worrying.
The normal amount of sleep required by an adult ranges from six to 10 hours. As we
grow older this quantity normally decreases, however, as long as you get enough sleep
in a day to make up at least six to seven hours, even if it is ‘broken up’ into sleep bouts
throughout the day as naps. This is acceptable if you feel refreshed throughout the day.
Sleep is as important as your nutrition, and here are some ways to improve your sleep
hygiene for getting a good night’s sleep:
At the age of 17, you are still at the
stage of searching for your direction
in life, as well as the type of girl
who suits you best. I advise you to
get a better understanding of
yourself first, and then the
answer will take care
of itself.
1. Keep your bedtime the same each night (even on the weekend) for consistency’s sake.
2. Cut out caffeine, cigarettes, and alcohol four to six hours before bedtime.
3. Don’t exercise right before bedtime.
4. Only use your bed for sleep and intimacy. Don’t bring work or gadgets into bed.
5. If you use air-conditioning, adjust your thermostat to a comfortable temperature,
usually 20 to 23 degrees Celsius.
6. Turn the lights off and use eye covers to keep the room dark.
7. If it’s taking more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, don’t stay in bed. Go to another quiet
room and engage in a relaxing activity until you feel drowsy.
8. If your mind is busy, write down your thoughts in a diary or journal.

It is common to experience temporary insomnia, but if it persists and interferes with
your daily functioning, it is time to seek advice from a medical professional.

ASTHMA:

Otherwise?
We asked Joshua Wong, a

asthma. He shared many
interesting insights.
is an intermediate-risk country for asthma prevalence with
the highest number of asthma deaths in the world given its
small population. While there is no particular reason why
asthma is so prevalent in Singapore, here are some possible
explanations.
There are studies that have show the correlation between
affluence and the incidence of asthma. Exactly how these two
factors are correlated is still under investigation. However,
one possible reason cited is the ‘hygiene hypothesis’. This
hypothesis states that individuals who are constantly exposed
to clean environments without any exposure to infectious
microorganisms at a young age are more likely to have an
increased risk of developing diseases related to the immune
system.
In accordance with the ‘hygiene hypothesis’, there seems
to be growing evidence of increasing allergic disorders in
more developed countries. Certain lifestyle practices and
increased sanitation in the more developed countries have
led to decreased exposure to microorganisms. With the lack
of exposure to infectious microorganisms at a young age,
the natural development of the immune system may be
compromised. Conclusions drawn from the above hypothesis,
though not confirmed, suggest that asthma may be prevalent
in Singapore as a result of its increasing affluence. Despite
that, such a hygiene-related hypothesis should not be a reason
for neglecting personal hygiene. Personal hygiene still plays
an important role in the prevention of most transmittable
diseases.
BOTH ALLERGIC AND NON-ALLERGIC
Asthma refers to a condition in which the airways are
narrowed or blocked, leading to symptoms such as coughing,
wheezing, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties or chest
tightness. The airways are usually blocked or narrowed
due to inflammation, sometimes accompanied by structural
changes to the respiratory system. Asthma is not an allergy but
an allergy may trigger an asthma attack. As allergic asthma

more likely to develop asthma.
On the other hand, non-allergic asthma is
not related to allergies but triggered by various factors such
as anxiety, exercise, infection, air conditions (e.g. cold or
dry air), smoke and other irritants. The exact mechanism by
which a non-allergic asthma brings about airway obstruction
is complex and still largely unknown. However it is not
related to the over-sensitivity of the immune system, unlike
allergic asthma.
ASTHMA IN SINGAPORE
The global prevalence of asthma has risen
steadily across the Asian region for the
past 20 years. Locally, about 5%
of adults and 20% of children
are suffering from asthma.
According to the Global
Initiative on Asthma
(GINA) report by
the World Health
Organization
(WHO), Singapore
BECOMING MORE PREVALENT
In a news report published in 2004, some experts claimed
that urbanisation and pollution have led to the rise in asthma
prevalence. With urbanisation, there is an increased use of
motorised vehicles which leads to increased emission of
vehicle exhaust pollutants. In Singapore, the current vehicle
growth rate in Singapore stands at 1.5 percent. With the
constant increase in vehicle numbers, the emission of pollutants
is also rising. This may be one of the reasons why asthma is
prevalent in Singapore.
A recent news report from Australia has shown that the
pollen count in the air has been rising exponentially, possibly
due to the effects of climate change. With the rise in pollen
numbers, there is likely to be impact on respiratory problems
which are allergenic in nature, such as hay fever and allergic
asthma. Although this report is not directly related to the
Singapore context, it can be deduced that the global climate
change may affect the pollination pattern of plants (plants may
bloom earlier or the blooming period lengthens), which will
then translate to more incidences of allergy-related respiratory
conditions including asthma. Besides affecting the behaviours
of plants, climate change has other significant effects which
may indirectly lead to a rise in respiratory diseases.
FAZED BY THE HAZE
Other than intentional ‘slash and burn’ agricultural practices,
the well-known indicator of climatic change, El Nino, leads
to dry seasons which may trigger forest fires in neighbouring
countries. In the southern ASEAN region, the dry season
occurs between the months of June to October while the dry
season for the northern ASEAN is between December and
March. The dry season with its low rainfall, coupled with the
presence of highly burnable materials such as wood and peat
(partially decayed plants), serves as a perfect combination for
forest fires. Once a forest fire has occurred, the smoke is carried
away in the form of haze (a combination of smoke and dust in
dry air), with the travel direction dependent on the wind.
The 2006 Southeast Asian haze arising from the
uncontrolled forest burning in Indonesia affected many
countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and
Brunei. In June 2013, forest fires in Indonesia once again sent
out haze to the neighbouring countries including Singapore.
This recent haze incident is the worst in Singapore’s history
with a 3-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reaching its
peak at 401, a level which is considered hazardous. Haze
and other smoke particles are known triggers for respiratory
conditions including asthma. However uncommon, there is
always a possibility that a forest fire will occur in neighbouring
countries, which may have an impact on the respiratory health
of local residents.
Lastly, one of the most common triggers of asthma or any
other allergies is dust mites faeces. Since dust mites thrive
well under humid conditions, they thrive in Singapore with its
average relative humidity of
roughly 84% all year round.
This could partly account for
the high prevalence of asthma
cases in Singapore.
All forms of asthma can
be effectively managed with
lifestyle measures and sometimes
medication. Always consult a
medical professional for advice
on how to manage your asthma,
allergic or otherwise.

When we asked Mr Teo why he thought Lex chose that
one very specific spot, he explained that a local shop-owner
said she believes she saw him being dumped there. Sad, we
felt, that the loyalty of Lex was probably so misdirected.
Mr Teo, like dozens before him, just couldn’t catch Lex,
and the SPCA referred him to Rajaa of Tigrris Pet Services
and Pets Logistics Movers.
Rajaa is known as a very strategic thinker, and shared
many tales of animal rescue in situations ranging from cats
up trees to dogs teetering on the edge of way-high balconies.
Rajaa took this opportunity to caution readers, “Animal
instincts do not always mean that a pet won’t fall from high
places. When in doubt, it’s best to fence off precarious spots.”
THE 47-DAY QUEST!
Rajaa points out that his rescue methods are always
humane. Firstly he tried food bribes and ambushing
Lex while he’s asleep. All attempts failed, even with the
seasoned Rajaa at the helm.
Eventually, for the super-savvy Lex, he imported an
expensive, huge net from the US for the job, which turned
out to be well-worth its hefty price-tag of $1,000.
Sweet success finally came, but it took a professional
no less than a staggering 47 days to catch Lex!
