Dr. Joseph Xavier S.J. completed his Masters in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Science, Mumbai, specializing in Medical and psychiatric social work. He taught social work in Loyola College since 1981. He completed his doctoral studies in social work concentrating on community health models in South India. He has been instrumental in initiating several courses like counseling for social work, Health Care administration, hospital management, communication for social work. He also started a new specialization in Human Rights for Social Work. It was considered one of its kinds. He was the principle of Loyola College from the year 2000 – 2004.During his tenure he brought about the successful restructuring of all the undergraduate programmes.He also founded the ‘out reach’ programme, which has become a model for the universities to emulate.
