Healer and medium John of God (João Teixeira de Faria) welcomes thousands of visitors each year to his center, the Casa de Dom Inácio, in Brazil. John of God was born in 1942 in the village of Cachoeira da Fumaca and experienced a difficult childhood, leaving school after only two years to apprentice in his father’s tailor shop in order to help support his struggling family. As a teenager traveling the country looking for work, he followed a vision and found himself at the Spiritist Center of Christ the Redeemer near Campo Grande, Mato Grosso. It was here that João had his first experiences as a medium. Unable to understand the witnesses that claimed he had been incorporated by a spirit and had performed more than fifty healings when he passed out one day, John of God sought protection from the director of the center as his experiences as a spirit medium began to unfold. After an intense period of spiritual instruction and guidance from the spiritual entities that incorporate in his body, he gave himself over to his experience of healing and serving others, practicing his healing work discretely and occasionally suffering persecution or imprisonment for it. John of God eventually found protection in the army, where he became a tailor as well as a favorite spiritual healer for military and civil authorities after healing an injured military doctor. He later became a successful businessman, which allows him to operate a healing center called the Casa de Dom Inácio in Abadiânia, Brazil, where anyone can be seen for no cost. Three days a week, John of God receives visitors from all over the world for healing sessions during which he allows “spirit doctors” to take over his body to administer physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. Described as “an immaculate example of generosity and charity...[who] gives to those in need without strings and with such grace,” John of God is committed to being a conduit of love and healing for anyone who needs it. Many people who visit the casa do not have major physical ailments or life-threatening illness. You don’t have to be ill to receive the benefits of John of God and the Casa. Visiting the Casa offers the opportunity to create more personal energy, to feel more love in our hearts, to restore relationships, to remove emotional blocks that have been holding us back from our potential and to continue or start a spiritual practice. Everyone’s journey is personal and Barbara will work with you one-on-one and as a group to set intentions long before we arrive at the Casa. John of God has developed a reputation as one of the most powerful healers to emerge in the 20th Century. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Going to the Casa will provide you with a serene environment that will give an opportunity to tap into the healing energies and create an opening to make the changes that sometime seem impossible when we get caught up in our daily lives at home. The Casa and village are tranquil and peaceful. The people are welcoming and the Brazilians love of life is infectious. Jodi’s Personal Experience with John of God John of God visits the United States from his home in Abadiania, Brazil once a year at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. I was able to experience John of God’s work first hand in September of 2014 and then, again, in 2015. Although there are documented cases of spectacular and miraculous healings, my experience with JOG was introspective, gentle and meditative. It is about setting intentions and doing work for personal growth, emotional healing, and forgiveness. Whatever you choose to focus on is a very personal journey. In 2014 while sharing a dorm floor at the Omega Campus, I met Barbara Brodsky and her husband, Hal Rothbart. Barbara is an inspiring accomplished woman and her story is incredible (Her book Cosmic Healing is a must read). Since my experience with John of God, I have had many people ask me about the opportunity to do deeper work and visit him at his Casa. Barbara is an approved Casa guide. I like to think of this time in Brazil as a retreat. Giving ourselves time to reflect and heal can be a powerful way to process the things that are happening in our lives, and one of the best approaches to do this is by going on a retreat. Going on retreat means that we have set the intention to heal and learn more about our spirit, and doing this is a decision that we make for ourselves. Putting our trust in the retreat process will make space for the necessary work we have to do, making it easier for us to explore the innermost reaches of our soul. By paying attention to these messages, we pave the way for greater healing and transformation. For many spending time in contemplation at a retreat offers the gift of insight and understanding that can translate to all aspects of our daily lives.
