N EWSLETTER WomenSupportingWomen.org Get Ready for the New You! FREE Class for Survivors Sue Revelle Executive Director One thing that I often find with survivors just out of treatment is that they are at a loss for what to do next. For a long time, their lives are dictated and directed by a devastating diagnosis, and the multitude of doctors and healthcare professionals who help treat them. But what happens when treatment is done? You start fresh by rebuilding a strong immune system. With help of a grant from the REACH (Remind-Eat-Act-Care-about Health) Project through Community Health Charities, Maryland, we will be offering survivors the opportunity to participate in a healthy lifestyle class called “Cooking For the New Me!” This four-class series will assist survivors with taking control of their lifestyle choices in relation to food and nutrition. More information on these classes can be found on page 5 of this newsletter, as well as information on registering. Please keep in mind that in order to give the best and most personalized information, the class sizes will be kept small. Registration will be accepted on a first come - first served basis, so be sure to sign up quickly. I’ve been looking forward to offering survivors this opportunity to take action… To take control of their choices and start fresh with a healthier lifestyle. Finally, we are ready, and I couldn’t be more excited to offer this opportunity. Have a great month! - Sue M AY 2013 Women Supporting Women 2012 - 2013 Board of Directors Penny Bradford (President) Mary Doak (Vice President) Tina Nichols (Secretary) Brenda Hearn (Treasurer) Billye Sarbanes (Past President) Sue Revelle (Executive Director) Colleen Brewington Ruth Clendaniel Dean Coffelt Keisha Evans The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. ~ Honore de Balzac Mailing of this newsletter was made possible by a grant from the Quality Health Foundation. Henson Cancer Institute is offering one of the best gifts any woman will receive for Mother’s Day: the opportunity for a free clinical breast exam. Women who have had breast cancer know that early detection is the best way to make sure that the best possible treatment options and outlook are available. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast — important factors in predicting the prognosis of a woman with this disease. So bring your mother, sister or best friend and join them for a clinical breast exam and education to perform self-breast exams. Speak to clinicians about your questions or concerns and have them answered, woman to woman. There are two opportunities for the free exams: Thursday, May 9 and Thursday, May 16, from 3-6 p.m. each day. Screenings will be held at the Breast Center at Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. To register for a free clinical breast exam, call 410-543-7006. Mammograms are important! In honor of Mother’s Day, call a special woman in your life to remind her to get her annual mammogram. Ask her to pass the message on... 3 Source: Coping Magazine, January/February 2013, Page 13 NUTRITIONAL UPDATE 4 100% Fruit “Cake” Source: allrecipes.com Ingredients: Directions: 1 seedless watermelon 1 honeydew melon - seeded, peeled, and sliced 1. To create the base tier of the cake, cut 3 slices of watermelon, 1-2 inches thick, crossways through the center of the melon. Trim the rind from the watermelon slices, and place the largest slice onto a cake plate. 1 cantaloupe seeded, peeled, and sliced 1 fresh pineapple peeled, cored, and sliced 2 cups strawberries hulled and sliced 1 cup blueberries 2. Alternate layering slices of cantaloupe, slices of fresh pineapple, slices of honeydew, and sliced strawberries; repeating with smaller pieces of fruit to make a layered stack in the shape of a cake. 3. Thinly slice a few pieces of remaining melon and pineapple. With a cookie cutter or a sharp knife, cut the remaining slices into decorative shapes. Decorate the cake tiers with the cut fruit shapes and remaining berries. 4. Refrigerate until serving time. To serve, slice the cake with a sharp knife, one wedge at a time, and set the wedge onto a plate. Cooking For the New Me! DAY! O T TER S I G RE WSW is partnering with Habanera Farm, Shore Appliance Connection, and Buddy Chatham to create a healthy lifestyle program designed to assist breast cancer survivors in starting to change the way they approach food. This objective will be met through a series of four monthly cooking classes using simple recipes addressing the special nutritional aspects necessary for cancer survivors. The classes are designed to provide participants with knowledge, skills, enthusiasm and habits to create healthy meals within a budget. This is to be done in a setting where participants can reconnect with ways of incorporating fresh, local and whole food ingredients in meals, share the company of those in the community, and simply enjoy their experience. Each block of classes will be held at Shore Appliance Connection in Salisbury at the dates and times listed below. As the classes are free, space is limited. Therefore, we ask that you only register if you are plan to attend all four classes in your chosen block. Additionally, each class block will arrange a time to meet with Buddy Chatham to take an instructional tour of a local grocery store. If you are a survivor who is interested in having fun, learning, and making positive lifestyle changes, please contact the Women Supporting Women Regional Office at 410-548-7880 to register by May 15! Immediately following her diagnosis, she released a statement saying, "I'm very optimistic as to the outcome and want to thank everyone who has sent positive thoughts and support. I look forward to going back to work soon." And work she did: Since her recovery, Tierney, 45, has appeared in a stage production titled North Atlantic, played Kelly McPhee in the FX show Rescue Me (TV Guide reports her character will be battling cancer in the show’s upcoming final season), and is slated to star in ABC’s new legal drama, The Whole Truth. Hota Kotb - As an Emmy-nominated journalist, Kotb has covered a variety of domestic and international stories, including Hurricane Katrina and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2007 she joined the Today show as a co-host and currently works alongside Kathy Lee Gifford. After her diagnosis, Kotb, now 46, allowed cameras to track her treatment and wrote a deeply personal essay with a message to woman fighting breast cancer: “I know you feel like you’re in hell now, but your life is about to get a whole lot better.” She said she realized that surviving the scariest event of her life gave her the courage to tackle new challenges she wouldn’t have attempted in the past. “It’s funny when I think how I owe my job, in part, to cancer,” she said. Robin Roberts - Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts has racked up many impressive interviews over the years; she was the first journalist to interview Barack Obama after he was sworn in as president. The newscaster chose to take on her battle with breast cancer publicly, announcing her diagnosis in 2007 after discovering a lump during a self-exam at age 46. She has since been an advocate for awareness and early detection. (Last year when a medical panel recommended that women wait until age 50 to begin routine mammograms, she told Essence she “was floored.”) Roberts most recently participated in the 2010 Stand Up 2 Cancer fundraising television special. Betsey Johnson - Johnson is constantly earning attention for her bold fashions and eccentric style. She yelled “Ride me! Ride me!” from atop a pink bicycle on the catwalk of her New York City runway show earlier this year. But the 60-something designer kept her 1999 breast cancer diagnosis quiet, fearful that the news might negatively impact her business. Johnson confided only in her daughter, Lulu, after discovering lumps in her breast when one of her saline implants deflated during a massage. These days, Johnson is doing well following a lumpectomy and radiation - and she has become active in the fight, serving as honorary chairperson for the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer initiative. Richard Roundtree - Best known for his role as sex-machine private detective John Shaft in the 1970 film Shaft, Richard Roundtree is proof that breast cancer affects men, too. Roundtree discovered a lump in his right breast in 1993 and received chemotherapy, radiation treatments and a mastectomy. He has acted in a number of TV shows and films, including the 2000 Shaft remake, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Roundtree, 68, is now a breast cancer advocate, working with the advocacy group Susan G. Komen for the Cure to raise men's awareness and encourage early detection. Look for Roundtree in the films Retreat! and This Bitter Earth, out later this year. Carly Simon - Seventies icon Carly Simon underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer in October 1997. During her recovery, she wrote the autobiographical album The Bedroom Tapes. Simon's legendary love life includes (but is by no means limited to) romances with Cat Stevens, Mick Jagger and Warren Beatty, as well as an 11-year marriage to fellow singer-songwriter James Taylor, with whom she has two children. Simon, 65, has released more than 25 albums, but her best-known song remains 1973’s "You're So Vain." Gloria Steinem - Considered one of the original voices of the women’s liberation movement, Gloria Steinem, a one-time Playboy bunny-turned-feminist activist, founded the legendary women's magazine Ms. in 1972. Despite a breast cancer diagnosis in 1986, she continues to give speeches, write and keep herself heavily involved in politics. Steinem, now 76, was particularly active in the 2008 presidential election, and her outspoken editorials on its key players (including Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin) are merely the latest in a long line of divisive opinions. 7 MEETINGS AND EVENTS May 1 Knitting Class with Cindy DuBuque Salisbury Office 12:00 - 2:00 PM May 2 Survivor Meeting Salisbury Office 6:30 PM May 5 High Heel Dash Salisbury University 1:00 - 3:00 PM May 28 Celebrity Guest Bartender Night MoJo’s Urban Eatery Salisbury, MD 5:00 - 8:00 PM May 1 - June 4 Bras for a Cause The Centre at Salisbury JC Penney Court June 5 Knitting Class with Cindy DuBuque Salisbury Office 12:00 - 2:00 PM June 6 Survivor Meeting Salisbury Office 6:30 PM June 15 Grapes Against Breast Cancer Layton’s Chance Vineyard and Winery Vienna, MD 12:00 - 5:00 PM June 25 Celebrity Guest Bartender Night MoJo’s Urban Eatery Salisbury, MD W ICOMICO C OUNTY C HAPTER N EWS T HE R EGIONAL O FFICE 1320 B ELMONT A VENUE , S UITE 402 S ALISBURY , M ARYLAND 21804 410-548-7880 W ICOMICO @W OMEN S UPPORTING W OMEN . Our new address will be: Women Supporting Women Eunice Sorin Office 12216 Ocean Gateway, Unit 1500 Ocean City, MD 21842 It is easy to find, right on Route 50. For those of you that remember, it is where the Monkey’s Trunk used to be. The exposure is awesome and we will be saving money that can be better used in our community. There will now also be plenty of parking, so we hope to see you more often, and hope to have more participation in the support group meetings. Speaking of the support group meetings, we have noticed a sharp decline in participation, and we are currently evaluating their effectiveness. We would welcome your input regarding dates, times, and subject matter. The goal of Women Supporting Women is to provide the best possible services for survivors, so we hope that you will talk with us and let us know the best way to be there for you.
