your wedding date is the first decision you and your fiancé make together. Whether you choose a date for sentimental reasons such as the day the two of you first met, or whether the date is chosen for practical reasons, keep in mind that you’ll need six to eight months to plan a formal wedding. A small, intimate gathering can take about three months to organize. June is still the most popular month to be married in, followed closely by August, July, May and December. Discuss honeymoon plans with your fiancé and be mindful of the time of year your favorite resort spot will be “in season.” Consider also the time of year most convenient for you and your fiancé to be away from school or work. THE DAY Though Saturday is the most popular day of the week, a wedding may take place any day accepted by religious custom. Friday evenings are also becoming popular and CAPPS COVE WEDDINGS CABINS & Wedding Chapel • Event Facilities Honeymoon Cabin 4126 Co. Whether daytime or evening, the ceremony may be formal or informal. If the evening wedding is formal, however, it is strictly so, and the entire wedding party must be in formal dress. Six o’clock is the dividing hour for the afternoon and evening ceremonies. Morning weddings are favored at high noon or half-past twelve. Because of customs of some churches, nine and ten o’clock ceremonies are equally desirous. The afternoon wedding at four or four-thirty is popular, although many are held as early as three or three-thirty. Evening weddings are at eight or eight-thirty and in some areas of the country, as early as six and as late as nine. THE HOUR Once you have an approximate time of year for your wedding in mind, check with your clergyman. Some religions discourage marriages on certain days. You may find your favorite church or synagogue already booked. Discuss the conflict with your clergyman. Perhaps you can be married at a different time of day than you originally planned (in the morning or evening, for example). Check with the person (banquet manager, caterer) who handles receptions at your preferred site to see what dates are free. Only you and your fiancé can decide if you would rather choose a different date if a particular site is unavailable, or if you prefer to stick with your original date and investigate other places and services. The availability of the hall you select, the church where the ceremony will be performed, and the attendants you’d like in your wedding party, must be determined before the date can be considered “set.” www.partytimesrus.com “Your Wedding Rental Professionals” with everything you need to create wedding memories to last a lifetime. D Doves End Ceremony With Sentimental Touch Releasing white doves after a wedding ceremony is one of the most graceful ways to conclude the marriage celebration—and it’s a tradition that’s been included in many famous weddings including those of Elizabeth Taylor and Whitney Houston. Most couples opt to release doves just after exiting church, when excitement is at its peak. Sometimes a special poem or passage is read prior to the release to enhance the sentiment of the moment. The bride and groom then release the dove each is holding while a flock of birds is simultaneously set free from a nearby basket. Symbolizing love and peace, the doves spark excitement and delight for both the newlyweds and their guests, especially when planned as a surprise. For those wondering what happens to the birds after they are released, as is a natural instinct for most birds, they fly to a very familiar spot—home! Releasing white doves takes only seconds after your ceremony—but its impact lasts a lifetime. They are considered to be the “natural” equivalent of having fireworks at your wedding! 12 Birmingham Bridal Directory Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 A Beginner’s Guide to Wedding Rituals A Q. Where does the word “bridal” come from? A. In Colonial America, the father of the bride was allowed to throw a party to help defray the costs of the wedding. Admission was charged to this “bride’s ale” and the custom stayed around shortened to the word “bridal.” Q. Why do we tie shoes and tin cans on cars? A. In Anglo-Saxon times, the father would take off his left shoe and hand it to the groom, who would then hit his wife over the head with it. This symbolized transferral of authority from the father to the husband. By tying shoes on cars, we maintain the custom. Q. What does ”honeymoon” mean? A. Married couples in England were required to spend the month after their marriage drinking mead, a sweet wine made from honey. So “honey-moon” was the wine that would be consumed during the first days of marriage. www.alabamabride.com 10:48 PM Page 13 The Spiced Pear Tea Room We have the perfect setting for all your bridal events. Not true! There’s every reason to celebrate a second marriage—it too marks the beginning of a new life together for two people who are very much in love. Don‘t let anybody tell you that you aren’t entitled to the wedding of your dreams. If you’ve been married before, you may be wondering what’s considered proper for a subsequent marriage ceremony. Should you simply go to the courthouse? If you marry in a church, can you wear a long dress? Can you have bridesmaids? What if you have children from a previous marriage? These aren’t easy questions, and etiquette experts sometimes differ in their answers. Most experts agree, however, that any wedding is a celebration and should be a beautiful and happy event. With this in mind, let’s explore some of the issues. If you’ve been married before, you and your groom will probably choose to pay for a subsequent wedding yourselves. If you’re on a tight budget, however, friends or family may offer to help. There’s nothing wrong with graciously accepting their generosity if you feel comfortable with their efforts. When you make out the guest list, don’t be afraid to include friends and relatives from your previous marriage if you’re still close to them and everyone feels comfortable with the situation. As far as the wedding party goes, it’s customary to have at least one attendant for each of you. Also include your children and his, if they’re old enough and interested in participating in the ceremony. Some couples present the children with tokens of some kind to symbolize the creation of their new family. For the children, those tokens can hold the same kind of significance as your wedding rings. Your invitations can be as formal as your choice of ceremony. Many couples choose their own wording and may use color or pictures on their invitations. Today, there are no longer hard and fast rules about the wedding party’s attire. The bride can wear white because these days white has come to signify joy and celebration rather than purity. If the wedding is fairly formal, the bride may choose a long gown—even one with a short sweep train. Veils used to signify virginity with their aura of mystique and modesty, but these days, they’re considered simply part of the wedding outfit. You may choose to wear a veil, or you may prefer a hat or flowers in your hair. You may feel it’s inappropriate for you to be “given” away, so you may decide to walk in alone, with your children, or even with the groom. Whatever decisions you make, remember that your remarriage is an affirmation of a joyous new beginning. Don’t let anyone dissuade you from having the wedding you want. 14 Birmingham Bridal Directory Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:48 PM Page 15 W What do lighting stores, art galleries, and hardware stores have in common? Because today’s bride is venturing beyond the traditional gifts of china and silver, these type businesses have found a gift opportunity by offering bridal registries. Both couples and well-wishers are finding housewares and home furnishing presents to be very sensible gifts. Bridal registry lists today are as varied as the types of brides there are and one’s imagination is the only limit to the extent of these lists. Gift possibilities can range from lamps, mirrors, pictures and pieces of art, to pottery, baskets, and one-of-a-kind stoneware. While brides have traditionally dragged their prospective grooms to china departments only to hear “I really don’t care. Whatever you want is fine with me,” they are finding a much different response when entering a hardware store with their husband-to-be. Grooms find themselves enjoying participating in the selection of ladders, tools, and tool chests. For the couple already moving into their first home, a mailbox or lawn and garden equipment including rakes, shovels, and mowers are important gifts to consider. The idea of having a bridal registry is to provide a convenient way to help your family and friends choose gifts you really want or need. While many brides still want and need to be registered for china and silver patterns, a lot of brides are finding registry departments in lighting stores, art galleries, and hardware stores offer exactly what they need. www.alabamabride.com 15 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:48 PM Page 16 Shining the spotlight to inspire and raise the visibility of women’s contributions, The Women’s Exchange Profiles feature outstanding Alabama businesswomen in a print calendar and online at www.womens-exchange.com. If your families don’t know each other, arrange a meeting as soon as possible. Generally the bride’s parents are responsible for the announcement, either by sending a detailed release to the newspapers, or at a party, or both. An engagement party is an ideal way of telling relatives and friends. If there is to be no engagement party, write or telephone relatives and friends before your announcement is released. Check local and hometown requirements in advance and announce within one year of your engagement. INVITATIONS The bride’s family determines the number of guests. The groom and his family must furnish the bride their invitation list as early as possible, so that the bride may combine it with her list and remove any duplicates. Wedding invitations are sent out approximately four weeks prior to the wedding. Informal wedding invitations should be short, personal notes, telegrams, or telephone calls. If an engagement is broken, all gifts should be returned, except perishable ones. WEDDING ARRANGING THE WEDDING No bride should make plans for a formal wedding unless her groom accepts all it entails. If your wedding is to be an elaborate formal affair, professional management should be retained if possible. For either a formal or informal wedding, there is no substitute for a professional. It is very necessary that you have made certain decisions and arrangements before consulting any of the professional firms listed in this publication for details. You should know your budget, the style of your wedding, date, time, location, number of guests, attendants and have fabric swatches for coordinating the color scheme. WEDDING EXPENSES—Who Pays for What The bride’s family is entirely responsible for the wedding ceremony. The groom’s family may offer to share in the cost of the reception, and the bride’s family may accept, if they wish. Wedding costs, by tradition, are divided as follows: 20 Birmingham Bridal Directory Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:48 PM Page 19 The Bride (or family) Pays for: Invitations and Announcements The Bridal Outfit and Trousseau Bridal Photographs All costs of the Reception Flowers for the Church, Attendants and Reception Music at the Church and Reception Sexton, Organist and Choir Fees All rented equipment for large Weddings and Receptions A Limousine for the Bride and Cars for Transportation Groom‘s Wedding Ring Groom’s Gift Gifts for the Bride’s Attendants Lodging (if necessary) for out-of-town Bridesmaids Bride’s Personal Stationery The Groom (or family) Pays for: ‘ Bride’s Engagement and Wedding Rings Marriage License Clergyman’s Fee ($10-$100, Inquire) Bride’s Flowers Boutonnieres, Gloves, Ties for Men of Wedding Party Wedding Gift for the Bride Complete Wedding Trip Gifts for Best Man and Ushers Lodging (if necessary) for out-of-town Ushers OPTIONAL EXPENSES • Bride’s bouquet, usually gift of the groom, may be purchased by the bride’s family. • Corsages for mothers and grandmothers are usually provided by the groom, may be purchased by bride for her own mother and grandmother. • Bachelor dinner is usually given by groom or family, but may be given by bride’s family or friends. • Rehearsal dinner is usually given by groom or family, but may be given by bride’s family or relatives. • Attendants’ dresses are usually bought by each girl, but the bride may provide them, if she wishes. THE REHEARSAL All weddings with more than two attendants must be rehearsed before the event and at the convenience of the clergyman. Have child attendants there. Preferably the female child can practice walking in her wedding attire and throwing the flowers. The male child should practice with his pillow. Often the rehearsal is held in the evening, preceded or followed by a dinner for the bridal party. If you have not presented gifts to the members of your wedding party, they may be given at this time. www.alabamabride.com 21 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:48 PM Page 20 Birmingham’s Premier Wedding Accommodations Whether you are looking for overnight acommodations for your wedding guests and party, or a place to have your reception, the Embassy Suites Birmingham has you covered. Flowers that were once seasonal are now available year-round, with a few exceptions. Traditions have also changed. Years ago a bride always carried all white flowers, however, today a bride may prefer a little color or a very colorful bouquet. Creativity and reputation are the most important criteria in selecting a florist. Flowers should b an integral part of your budget, not just an afterthought. When shopping for a florist, be sure to compare the same number and flowers and remember that creativity and experience are not always reflected in the price quoted. The color of your bridesmaids' dresses influence the color scheme of your wedding. The florist needs to see a swatch of the material to assure the flowers chosen will complement your color scheme and look best in your pictures. Pale pink to one may be pale peach to another person. A reputable florist should have books of pictures to show, including pictures of work they have done. For several years, brides have preferred the hand-tied bouquets. An exciting new trend is selecting bouquets according to the style of the wedding and shapes that are most flattering. You may want a tall, thin look of a cascade bouquet for that longer, elegant line. If you prefer a compact formal bouquet, select a French nosegay or an English tussie mussie. For an informal wedding, you might select hand-tied "wildflowers" or a tropical or exotic hand-tied bouquet. If you want your fresh bouquet to be preserved, you must first ask a preservationist for instructions on handling the bouquet after the wedding. The fresher the flowers are, the better the finished product will be. After you have selected a florist, ask how to reserve your date and time. Finding an experienced florist that you trust will allow you to plan flowers for your perfect day and then you can relax! www.alabamabride.com Page 21 Hoover Florist “Simply the Best” Exotic, Elegant, and Unusual Designs at Reasonable Prices City Wide Delivery hooverflorist35226@yahoo.com www.hooverflorist.com Come Visit Us At Our New Address Bebe Butler Abner -Owner 1905 Hoover Court Birmingham, Alabama 35226 823-5273 1-800-628-0119 23 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:48 PM Page 22 Don’t BORE your guests while you take bridal pictures...give them JOY! For booking info www.joythequeenofclean.com or call 205.482.6999 Why Videotape Your Wedding? Videotapes and still photography both have places in your wedding plans. Still photographs are easy to display and transport, but a videotape captures the sights and sounds of a wedding from another perspective. Your tape can be filled with candid shots and sentimental moments that you’ll cherish for a lifetime. The bride usually misses the beginning of her wedding. She is awaiting her entrance and doesn’t see the lighting of the candles, soloist singing, the parents as they are escorted to their seats, or the entrance of the groom and the wedding party. The video preserves all these moments for her, so that years later she can participate in her wedding from a perspective she would otherwise never have enjoyed. Brides and grooms are almost always nervous, too, and a video gives them a chance to really see and hear the special moments that— at the time—seemed to fly by in a blur. They can hear the vows they made, watch the bridal dance, cake cutting, toasting, the bouquet toss— over and over again with the magic of video. Many people have their own video cameras these days, and you may be tempted to ask Uncle Harry to tape the wedding in order to save the expense of professional videography. Remember, however, that taping a wedding is a tremendous responsibility and will effectively prevent Uncle Harry from enjoying or partici- 24 pating in the wedding as a guest. If he’s unfamiliar with the church or unaccustomed to filming large gatherings, his final tape may not capture the event as you’d hoped. If you’ve decided to give Uncle Harry a break, how do you find a professional videographer? Many brides and grooms ask friends and relatives for recommendations. If your wedding will be quite large, select a videographer who can use at least two cameras and then edit your video to incorporate the best footage from both cameras. Find out if your videographer can use special effects and add music, and ask to see examples from other weddings he or she has recorded. Finally, be sure you tell your videographer exactly how much to record, and put your agreement in writing. Some companies will tape the entrance of all guests, the still photography sessions, and long portions of the reception. Still others “interview” guests and give them a chance to record their best wishes to the couple on tape. Remember that the cost of a videographer reflects his or her time and experience. In most cases, you get what you pay for. If you’re like most couples in years to come, you’ll insist that your photographs and your wedding videotape were the best wedding investments you could have made. For you, as for so many of us, music is a major reference point to the most important events of life. It is no wonder you want to fill the most important day of your life with music that will always be remembered by the two of you. From the pre-ceremony solo sung by your best friend to the last slow dance at the reception—you want each song to be special. Music is a beautiful way to individualize your wedding in a way that will long be remembered by you and your guests. You may prefer the elegance of a grand piano accompanied by a classical guitar, violin or harp. Or, you may fancy a popular local jazz band or even a full Big-Band orchestra. If your taste runs to the truly popular songs of today’s culture, you can hire a DJ who could also help in making the appropriate introductions for the bridal party entrance, toasts, dances, throwing of the garter and bouquet, and any other introduction you may desire. Choosing your DJ, band or musician can be the most important decisions you make to insure the success of your event. Everything else can be perfect, but if the music isn’t good, the party can fizzle. While selecting a DJ, band or musician can be confusing, there are a few things to remember. www.alabamabride.com The easiest way to make this selection is to hire someone you have already seen or heard that you like. When attending other parties, be sure to get a card or ask the host or manager of the function room where the party was held who was responsible for the music. Another good way to find someone is to ask your friends. Your friends probably have the same taste in music as you. Maybe they have been to a function you missed. Let them know ahead of time you'll be looking and ask them to keep their eyes and ears open. If you find out about someone you have not heard before, you might ask where they will be performing in a location where you could go and hear them. If so, make a visit, unannounced. Observe how they interact with the crowd. Are the people having fun? Are people dancing? Is the music too loud or not loud enough? Are they dressed appropriately for the event? While cost is always a consideration, be sure to remember that sometimes the higher price also reflects the experience this DJ, musician or band has. Do ask for references and do not hesitate to call them to assure yourself that you are getting what you are paying for. As you search, remember that above all, you want your event o be fun. Finding the perfect DJ, band or musician can truly make your wedding a musical memory. 25 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:48 PM Page 24 Formal Outings, LLC Your guests will be as happy as you are! The service provided allows the bride and groom to enjoy the details of their wedding plans rather than agonize over them. Brides of the 21st century lead a hectic life of their own and often find that their mothers also do not have the time to devote to planning this special day in a woman’s life. A professional wedding consultant plans and orchestrates the details surrounding parties and events leading up to and including the wedding day. Careful planning and the ability to pay attention to a million details are the qualities a consultant specializes in. A professional wedding consultant can actually provide a “One Stop Bridal Shop” to accommodate the needs of a bride. With the assistance of a wedding consultant, delightful hours can be spent selecting reputable wedding merchants, bridal attire, a reception site, stationery, photographers, florists and any number of other professionals who can work in harmony to create the perfect wedding day. A bride’s budget will be discussed with suggestions and recommendations made to provide the best service for the amount of money available. Discounts are often available to wedding consultants that will be passed along to the bride. Anyone can be talented with unlimited funds, but the expertise of a bridal consultant can help cut wedding costs and provide the bride with the wedding of her dreams. For a newly engaged couple, careful planning and organization are very important. A professional bridal consultant can coordinate the services needed to create a day that is uniquely yours... A moment in time filled with treasured memories which will be long remembered. 32 Birmingham Bridal Directory Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:49 PM Page 31 Y Your Wedding Gifts Part of the fun of a home wedding reception is seeing the gifts of the bridal couple. You can also set up a display of your gifts. A simple cloth can be used to cover the table. Or, you might prefer a white satin cloth finished with ribbon, bows and sprays of white flowers. Start your display with six or eight gifts, rearranging them as more come in. Group gifts into categories, with silver on one table and glassware on another. Scatter similar gifts so that it’s not obvious to anyone that you received four toasters. Do not exhibit cards or checks. If exact duplicates have been received, display only one. As you open each package, list it immediately in a card file. Include an identifying description of the gift, the name and address of the donor, the store from which it came (in case you want to exchange it later), the date it arrived, and the date your thank-you note is mailed. If you expect a lot of gifts, it’s best to attach a number corresponding to the listing on each one. If your reception is held in your home, your guests will see the gifts at that time because receptions in other locations do not include a gift display. You may want to ask friends to come over informally to see them. Gift displays are often left intact for a week after the ceremony so friends and relatives can drop by to see them. HAPPY RETURNS No matter how careful you are about registering your preferences, you’re bound to get duplicates or gifts you just don’t want. Since no one wants to think that his gift was exchanged, take back only those items you’re sure the giver will never know about. Otherwise, keep the gift. www.alabamabride.com 33 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:49 PM Page 32 www.alabamabride.com The Internet’s Most Comprehensive Wedding Website! • Search for the perfect wedding using our comprehensive search features! • Request and receive services and product information directly. • See detailed features including pictures and helpful hints. • Find facilities for your rehearsal, wedding and reception. • Comprehensive list of bridal related businesses and products. One of the most precious investments for this day will be the wedding gown. Proper care must be given to the gown so that it will remain a precious reminder of that important day. Before storing the gown, have it cleaned. There may be stains that are not visible at first glance, but which will turn yellow later. Choose a cool, dark, dry place to store the dress. Most cleaners will pack the gown in a special box which guards from dust. Line the dress with tissue to prevent wrinkling and wrap it with unbleached muslin. If hung, make sure straps are sewn to the waistline to relieve pressure on the shoulders from the weight of the skirt. The dress should be brought to the cleaners within two days. Careful selection of a photographer for your wedding event can be a very important decision. Good photographers stay busy so early commitment for such services should be accomplished as soon as the day, time and place for your wedding has been established. Follow these simple steps: (1) Arrange an appointment with your prospective photographer to examine sample wedding albums; (2) talk openly about the type of pictures you want; (3) get a price for the complete package, including engagement and wedding portrait, if desired; (4) find out how many proofs you may select from, number and sizes of pictures; and (5) check to determine if the bridal album is part of the price quoted. Before the engagement picture sitting: Be sure to get information on size and type of picture needed for the newspaper announcement. Before the wedding portrait sitting: Be sure to inquire about size and type needed for the newspaper, as well as, availability of a suitable bridal bouquet to be used for the picture. On the wedding day, the photographer will need to be familiar with rules governing photographing at the wedding site. At the reception, it may be desirable for friends and relatives to take candid shots to mark this special occasion for you. It would be a good idea to have an understanding with your photographer about this. Plan early and carefully. Your pictures are forever. www.alabamabride.com 47 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:50 PM Page 46 Overwhelmed by Planning a Wedding on a Budget? Just because a diamond is bigger does not necessarily mean it is better. 1) The “Cut” of a diamond does not just refer to the shape of the diamond but how well it is proportioned. During the cutting process, over half of the original diamond weight is loss due to an attempt to produce the best cut for that particular stone. 2) “Color” results from selective absorption. For a diamond “less is more” because colorless is most valuable. The G.I.A. color scale which grades colorless stones from D-Z, with D being the finest. D, E, and F are considered colorless and represent only 3% of diamonds sold. 3) “Clarity” represents the degree of absence of inclusions and blemishes. The majority of diamonds have minor blemishes when they are www.alabamabride.com ROUND HEART OVAL PEAR MARQUISE EMERALD formed in the earth. But the fewer the blemishes, the rarer, therefore more valuable. 4) “Carat Weight” derived from the carob seed and has been used since ancient times. A Carat is divided into 100 parts (points) therefore half of a carat is .50 points. Two diamonds of equal weight can have very unequal value, depending on the other three “Cs.” When shopping for your diamond, one should consult with a qualified jeweler who has been trained by the Gemological Institute of America which sets the standards for diamond grading worldwide or someone who has comparable diamond training. Also, compare the services the jeweler can provide and choose a ring that will last you a lifetime of happiness. 49 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:50 PM Page 48 Pachanga/Fiesta EVENT RENTAL EQUIPMENT Different Table Sizes and Styles, Bistro Tables, Chairs, Fog Machines, Karaoke, Tents, Dance Floors and Much More... M MONEY MATTERS Don’t Clash Over Cash More than 80% of the divorces in this country are caused by a difference of opinion in how to manage money. Good communication and an understanding of each other’s values are the key to sound financial planning. Are you a pay check to pay check person or a planner or a saver? What about your prospective spouse? Answer these questions before the wedding and make a plan that will make both of you happy. It is important to recognize and share the same dreams and long-range financial goals. These attitudes affect your daily spending and saving habits. Be willing to talk about money. Both of you should be aware of commitments, debts, and assets. Set up a budget and remember that a good rule of thumb is not to have more than 35% of your gross (before taxes and deductions) income in mortgage payments or rent, credit card payments and loan payments (car, furniture, etc.). Start a regular savings plan for emergencies and special occasions. Keep good records and decide who is going to handle the family business. You need to work on the plans together and never keep secrets from each other. Establish a banking relationship and get to know your banker. Banks have record keeping books and budget planning charts they will give you to guide you on money matters. If you can’t solve your money problems on your own, get help. Go to your bank. Most banks have people who can help you at no charge. There are many things to consider when planning this function, and remember, the only rule is that there are no rules. This is your day and your chance to shine. When deciding on a location, remember that many churches do not allow alcoholic beverages or dancing. If these activities are not important or appropriate, then the church fellowship hall or family life center are the best choice for your reception allowing quick access to the reception from the ceremony. Catholic churches and wedding chapels generally allow alcohol and dancing on premises which would allow all of the wedding day activities to take place in one location. Your other location alternatives are local hotels, country clubs, activity/convention centers, historic homes and botanical gardens. These locations, however, require your guests to be transported to a different location from the ceremony and you may lose a few guests in the process. These locations are better suited, however, to more festive occasions and allow for more of a party atmosphere. If you choose a hotel ballroom, lodging for your out-of-town guests can be included in your package deal. Make sure that the order of activities is preset so that nothing is left out during the hectic and exciting atmosphere of the reception. This does not mean, however, that the order of activities can’t change at a moment’s notice, which it often does. The first activity is usually the reception line, or as a substitute, a leadout introduction which is becoming more and more popular, not just as a substitute for the old reception line, but to provide a way to have all wedding participants introduced. This can be handled expertly by your Emcee. During the next “mix & mingle” part of the reception, your guests can get something to eat and drink while you and the photographer take care of other activities such as cutting the cake. This is also the best time for any toasts which need to be made. Many couples are putting disposable cameras on the tables and inviting the guests to snap random photos during the reception. The location of your reception will directly affect whether you will be allowed to use an outside caterer. Facilities with their own kitchen and staff will want to include the catering charge in a package deal. Churches and historic locations such as antebellum homes or Botanical Gardens will allow an outside caterer. Give special attention on whether you want a fully-served, sit down dinner or a buffet style service. While a sit down dinner is more elegant, it also requires more planning and creates a more formal atmosphere. The mix and mingle atmosphere provided by the buffet style service allows for less planning and more casual party atmosphere. Flowers still remain the best decoration choice for more formal receptions. However, for a casual or party atmosphere, balloons are becoming more acceptable. The entertainment that you choose could be the most important reception item of all. Everyone loves “live” music and a harpist, piano player, jazz combo or band can be used depending on your reception location and the ambience that you wish to create. One problem with live music is that good bands and combos are becoming more and more expensive. Because of this, Mobile Disc Jockey shows are more acceptable than ever. Disc Jockeys are generally less expensive than live music while allowing a greater selection of music choices. Disc Jockeys generally do not take a break every hour as bands tend to do and D.J.’s generally make better Emcees for your reception activities. While live bands are restricted by their “song list” or “play list,” a Mobile D.J. can play virtually any song ever recorded and offer it by the original artist. Having a D.J. will allow you to satisfy more of the musical interests of your guests resulting in a more fun-filled wedding reception. Why not plan to improve your appearance and confidence during this time also? Brides, moms, and even grandmothers can use this special time wisely. Your motivation will be high, so why not get serious about that diet and exercise program? You might want to join a gym or consult a personal trainer to implement a plan to suit your needs. If you’ve been considering a new hairstyle or hair color, you will probably want to experiment with choices several months before the big day. Any significant changes close to your wedding date may cause too much stress and uncertainty. Don’t forget your smile. You have a variety of options, including a bleaching program for whiter teeth, or even veneers. Ask your family dentist for suggestions. The months before the wedding are also a good time to consult a board certified facial plastic surgeon about various options to help you look your radiant best on that special day. Injectables and fillers can minimize lines and wrinkles or even plump lips. Lasers can be used to remove unwanted hair, lighten sunspots and skin discoloration, eradicate spider veins and redness, and even tighten the skin. Certain facials, microdermabrasions, and skin care products can be effective in bringing a new clarity and glow to any age complexion. All thank-you notes should be handwritten. • In the note, be certain to mention the gift and how it will be used in your new home or, in the case of a monetary gift, how it will be spent. • There is no reason that the groom should not help write thank-you notes, too. He can write notes to those who are closest to him. The bride and groom should be mentioned by name in the thank-you note. • Thank--you notes written before the wedding should be signed by the bride using her maiden name. Only after the wedding should she use her married name on correspondence. • Try to complete all thank-you notes within 2-3 months after the wedding. It is a good practice to write as many thankyou notes before the wedding as you can. Let your Family stay with our Family! WE ARE THE PREMIER HOTELS OF FULTONDALE, AL. Don’t be afraid to ask for their help. They want to be a part of your plans. The following is a list of customary duties performed by wedding attendants, but feel free to be flexible and utilize any special talents. MAID OF HONOR This person serves as the bride’s key attendant. She attends all pre-wedding festivities and helps the bride with as many details as possible. She holds the groom’s ring until the appropriate time, then exchanges it for the bride's bouquet. It is her duty to sign the wedding certificate as a legal witness. THE BRIDESMAIDS The main function of the bridesmaids is to add color and beauty to the wedding. They lead the bride to the altar. The number of bridesmaids used is a personal choice. THE BEST MAN The functions of the best man are varied and significant. He is responsible for coordinating all of the arrangements for the male members of the wedding party. Included are the details of the bachelor dinner, the marriage license being placed in the groom’s pocket and the wedding ring in his own. He also serves as a witness to the signing of the wedding certificate. He is responsible for giving the fees to the clergyman. THE USHERS It is the responsibility of the ushers to seat each female guest in a pew. Bride’s family members and friends sit on the left side of the main aisle; groom’s on the right. The head usher seats the mother of the groom. He also escorts the mother of the bride to her pew. If her son is an usher, he may escort his mother if she prefers. THE FLOWER GIRL, JUNIOR BRIDESMAID, RINGBEARER A flower girl harmonizes with the bridal party. Her bouquet is scaled down to size. Her dress is either a duplicate of the bridesmaids or a duplicate of the bride’s. A junior bridesmaid has the same duties and privileges as the other bridesmaids. Her gown is modified to suit her age. She walks first in the wedding procession unless, as the bride’s sister, she is the maid of honor. The ring bearer wears his best dress-up suit: navy or blue, or white linen in the summer. He may also wear a miniature tuxedo. If the wedding procession includes both a ring bearer and a flower girl, they precede the bride and her escort. www.alabamabride.com 57 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:50 PM Page 56 Oops.... T The Bridal Registry The Bridal Registry is the most convenient means to help your friends and relatives choose gifts that you really want. It is a free service offered to give you the opportunity to list the items you really want and need. More couples than ever before are registering their gift selections at specialty or department stores. The registries provide trained staffs knowledgeable in product, pricing, trends, quality, and stock positions. These people can answer all your questions and give you informed guidance. WHY SHOULD YOU REGISTER? It makes selecting a gift easier for your guests; they are assured that their choice is something you will like and really want. You will also avoid gifts that are not compatible with your lifestyle and you won't have to return duplicates. WHEN? You should register as soon as you become engaged. Then it will also be helpful for guests who will be purchasing gifts for your engagement parties and showers. WHO? Both the bride and groom should take part in the planning of their household and deciding what will go into it. WHAT? Everything you will need in your new home should be registered. Be as specific as possible. Note pattern, color, style number and manufacturer. These details will help family and friends. HOW? Once you have decided on your particular style, visit the bridal registrar; she can answer any questions about coordinating all the elements that go into furnishing and accessorizing your first home to help you create a warm and happy environment. As you choose your items, the registrar will record these as gift ideas. As people call and purchase items, the list will reflect this. If the store has several locations, your selections will be recorded throughout the system so that guests can shop in whichever store location is most convenient for them. Most stores have a free preprinted form; ask for a copy and take it home to review with the groom. This will give you more time and privacy in which to discuss each item before sitting down with the registrar. Wendy Walters & Frank Burford • March 13, 2010 Frank Burford and Wendy Walters’ storybook romance began in the fourth grade at Vestavia Hills Elementary when Frank made Wendy cry. The years after that were filled with Wendy’s complete avoidance of Frank. Their romance was re-ignited in the tenth grade when Wendy was crying less and Frank was acting like something more advanced than Australopithecus. After graduation from Vestavia High School, Wendy and Frank both spent four studious, exemplary years at the University of Alabama, while their relationship grew further and their love and respect for each other deepened. When it was time to propose, Frank chose Prayer Point at Wendy’s church, Vestavia Hills Baptist, because of the special memories Wendy had from going there all her life. Both sets of parents and Wendy’s grandmother got to participate in the event. The view of the city and the squeal of the mothers made it an unforgettable event. The engagement period was a complete blur. The after-rehearsal party was a University of Alabama-tinted tribute to Wendy and Frank’s past and a snarky look at their future. The party room was decorated with huge graphics of Wendy and Frank’s college years which echoed the theme of “Inaugural Homecoming.” The festivities included music by the legendary Rabbit Branch with Frank sitting in on drums with the band. The wedding went off without a hitch, and was even more beautiful with the incredible sunset over Shades Mountain and the floral cross designed by Becky Griffith. After the service by Gary Furr, Frank and Wendy left the church in her father’s, Chuck’s white Corvette, replete with red tuck-androll interior, for their reception at the Harbert Center. The reception was at once lavish with beautiful floral presentations in the Harbert Center’s tiered ballroom, delicious food, champagne and other libations; and lively with the music of Chevy 6, fronted by Frank’s father, Benje Burford. Guests stayed till the last minutes, dancing with giant cutouts of the bride and groom, and finally sending them off to the breeze created by hundreds of redand-white shakers. After a first night at the Tutwiler Hotel in Birmingham, the couple left for a week on the Mayan Riviera. Parents of the bride are Suzanne and Chuck Walters. Parents of the groom are Jean and Benje Burford. The cool photos are from Gretchen Birdwell of Gretchen B. They bring beauty, color and a wealth of tradition to marriage ceremonies and receptions. And with today’s endless selection, any effect can be achieved with the right flowers. And the right florist. Your Trusted Wedding Florist A florist can truly personalize your wedding. A floral designer can give your ceremony and reception a one-of-a-kind look that’s in harmony with your unique personality and lifestyle. As experienced professionals, we know how to listen to your ideas then recommend designs that meet your individual taste and budget. You can trust us to make your wedding the most beautiful, memorable day of your life. And even if your wedding is held in the same church as your best friend was married in, we can use flowers to magically transform the scene into a completely different picture. We not only know how to create personalized wedding floral designs, we have full knowledge of today’s complicated wedding etiquette. From the most appropriate uses for various flowers to who pays for what. We’ll ask you about the season and style of your wedding so we can suggest floral designs that will best achieve your overall theme. And we’ll guide you in the selection of your bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages, ceremony decorations and reception flowers. Plus, we’ll suggest little extras you might forget—like flowers for your wedding cake or getaway car. You’ll find choosing flowers is an exciting expe-rience, especially when you have the guidance of a professional wedding florist. Who Pays For What Traditionally, the bride’s parents were expected to pay for all of the flowers at the ceremony and the reception. And the groom was responsible for paying for the bridal bouquet, going-away corsage and the men's boutonnieres. But today, there are no absolute rules on who pays for what flowers. Every situation is different. Discuss your needs with both families to determine who is most willing and financially able to pay for the flowers. 68 Birmingham Bridal Directory Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:51 PM Page 65 “Weddings on Linden” Downtown Homewood Bridal Gowns BRIDAL BLISS 2900 Linden Avenue, Birmingham AL 35209 Grace Kelly Originals, Italian and American exclusive designers www.bridalblisshomewood.com 205-871-0002 Bridesmaids Dresses BRIDESMAIDS, INC. 2905 Linden Ave. Birmingham Al 35209 Over 400 dresses from which to choose! www.bridesmaidsinc.net 205-879-5489 Mothers’ Gowns MOTHER of the BRIDE and GROOM 2905 Linden Ave. Birmingham Al 35209 We serve our customer by private appointment. 205-879-8008 Wedding Jewelry MIMSEY’S 2905 Linden Ave. Birmingham Al 35209 Wedding Jewelry for the entire party! 205-527-5387 Wedding Venue THE STAR LIGHT 2901 Linden Ave. Birmingham Al 35209 Bridesmaids Luncheon, Teas, After Rehearsal ETC… 205-871-9950 Everything - Right at Your Fingertips www.alabamabride.com 69 Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:51 PM Page 66 The Bride’s Maids SILK BOUQUETS PHOTOGRAPHY • DISC JOCKEY TABLE AND CHAIR LINENS • CENTERPIECES • CEREMONY DECORATIONS www.thebridesmaids.biz • 205-602-9051 • info@thebridesmaids.biz Our clients love the convenience of our one stop shopping! Y Your Wedding Invitations If you appreciate the elegance of beautiful invitations, a reputable, established stationer is a great help. His well-trained people can advise you on the proper and popular styles of lettering, size, and quality of paper, as well as, the correct wording for announcements and invitations for church or home weddings. They also understand the problems connected with invitations from divorced parents and are qualified to help you using the rules of etiquette and good taste. The very best stationery stores charge no more than stores that might not have wedding expertise. Select and order your invitations three months before the wedding to allow ample time for mailing. The invitation can be engraved or thermographed. Thermography is a process that resembles engraving, is less expensive, and more readily available. When you order, ask about getting the outer and inner envelopes ahead of time so you can have them ready to mail when the invitations arrive. Out-of-town guests will appreciate an easy-to-follow map with hotel, reception, ceremony sites and parking lots marked. Label important roads with names and route numbers; the turns, with landmarks (gas stations, buildings, etc.). Include a north directional arrow. The map in front of your city’s phone book is an excellent, uncomplicated source to use. Wedding invitations are usually sent four weeks prior to the wedding day and should ALL be mailed at the same time. Take a complete invitation (with enclosures) to the post office to be weighed for postage. Write out addresses completely—include apartment, box, rural route numbers. Most important, the zip code should be written at least 1/2˝ from the envelope’s bottom and at least 1˝ from the right-hand edge (for machine sorting). If you need it, your post office has a national zip code directory. Don’t forget to include your return address. Wedding announcements are usually sent to people who are not invited to the ceremony and reception. If you are having a small wedding, announcements are a good way to notify friends and family of your marriage. Small at-home cards are often included in the announcements to let people (especially out-of-town friends) know your new address. These should be ordered with your invitations and sent the day of the wedding. 70 Birmingham Bridal Directory Birmingham-65th:Birmingham-60th 8/9/10 10:51 PM Page 67 Y ou will never forget your first DANCE & the moments in each other’s arms... on your wedding day, your honeymoon and the rest of your life... Address both the inner and outer envelopes in the same hand. Always write “and.” Symbols are not permissible, except when used as a title. (Ex.: Dr., Rev.) “John” not “J.” No initials are permissible. If you do not know what the initials stand for, omit them. Never write “and Family.” Inside envelope should have “and Guest” (or name). Write out “Forty-First.” Use no figures except for the house numbers and the zip code. Write out “East,” “West,” “North,” “South.” Write out “Street,” “Boulevard,” “Road” and so on. Spell out the State—Alabama—again, no abbreviations. All invitations must be handwritten, preferably in permanent black ink. Never typewrite an address on a formal invitation. Children under sixteen may be included by writing their first names in a line below their parents’ names on the inner envelope. Older children in the family should receive a separate invitation. The inner envelope is inserted in the outer envelope upper side up so that the writing faces the back of the outer envelope. Place invitation in the inner, ungummed envelope. Folded invitations are inserted with the folded edge down. Always send invitations and announcements sealed, with stamps (no meters), first-class mail. Invitations should be sent four to six weeks prior to the wedding. Wedding announcements are addressed in the same way as invitations but are mailed the day of the wedding. 1. A single-fold invitation inserted into an envelope with flap left open. 2. Inserting a single-fold invitation with an enclosure card. www.alabamabride.com 3. Enclosing a reply card and envelope. 4. This is supposed to be the highlight of my life, right?” Think again. From making the decision to say “yes,” to choosing a date that conforms to everyone’s schedules, to selecting a dress, a church, a caterer, a ring, a florist, a photographer, invitations, who to invite and where to live, you’re under constant stress even though you may not be aware of it. Stress is an unconscious and automatic reaction, its effects are felt in every aspect— physical, mental, and emotional. Our pleasures and pains, and the ups and downs of daily life, affect our bodies profoundly. We all experience stress to one degree or another. Even though we may not be aware of the tension we store inside us, over time our bodies become all to familiar with the extra wear and tear stress presents. We use our muscles to block, control, and restrain emotions such as fear, anger, and sadness. Symptoms such as aches, pains, fatigue, depression, headaches and digestive problems begin to manifest when stress remains in the body. Is that how you want to feel on your wedding day? Of course not! There are various methods that can be used to combat stress including exercise, improved nutrition, rest, meditation, and therapeutic massage. This can all result in greater body awareness, which in turn can help release tension and stress before becoming damaging to the body. You need to be as healthy and relaxed as possible physically, mentally and emotionally on your wedding day. So while you’re planning and taking care of all the details for your wedding, don’t forget the most important thing on your list, and that’s you! Sheila Mikell, C.M.T.
