We Kindle Chanukah Lights December 20 to December 27 Chanukah information on page 29 From the Rabbi’s Study Rabbi Adam Wohlberg In his book, The Art of Jewish Living: Seder Hanukkah, Dr. Ron Wolfson reports that when he was as a child growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, his mother did everything she could to counter the tidal wave of Christmas decorations, music and holiday celebrations that were the norm in their community. What his mother attempted to do each year was ―outdo Christmas.‖ Wolfson writes: This explains the decorations, the presents each and every night, the piles of latkes, the Hanukkah gelt. It seemed to work, especially when our Christian next-door neighbor, Mrs. Lamm, called to complain to my mother that I had been teasing her son Alan: “You only have Christmas for one day; we have Hanukkah for eight!” According to Wolfson, his mother‘s plan worked well until one year when the fifth night of Hanukkah coincided with Christmas eve. After the lights had been lit, the presents given, and the latkes consumed, my mother confidently tucked me into bed, saying: “Well, Ronnie, wasn’t Hanukkah wonderful tonight?” “Yes, Mommy,” I dutifully replied. “Mommy?” “Yes, honey.” “Mommy, can we take down the Hanukkah things - just for tonight - so Santa Claus won’t know we’re Jewish?” This may have been a little boy‘s attempt to get even more presents, or perhaps he simply wanted to experience what he believed all of his non-Jewish neighbors were experiencing that night. For one night, maybe he just wanted to be like everybody else. All the same, we chuckle at the idea that one can celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas at the same time; as though the two holidays didn‘t represent vastly different traditions and beliefs. 2 As an adult, Wolfson has come to realize that ―Jews who celebrate Christmas are embracing symbols and traditions that are absolutely foreign to Judaism.‖ practice. And so the church had to do what the Rabbis often did – infuse a pagan custom with new religious meaning and significance.‖ ―Christmas,‖ he points out, ―is the celebration of the birth of a Messiah in whom Jews do not believe, while Hanukkah is the celebration of the right not to assimilate,‖ which he argues is exactly what a Jewish person who celebrates Christmas is doing. The evergreen came to represent the eternal life of Christ. Its shape is ascending, towards heaven, where the resurrected Jesus rose! In 1990, when Seder Hanukkah (A Project of the Federation of Jewish Men‘s Clubs and the University of Judaism) was first published, a survey was cited indicating the prevalence of Christmas trees in Jewish homes: 10% of Jewish households in which both husband and wife were born Jewish reported having Christmas trees. That statistic may come as a surprise to many, but I am sure the number is considerably higher today, some 20 years later. And in homes where only one parent was Jewish, the same study suggested that 70-80% erected a tree for Christmas. People will argue that having a Christmas tree in one‘s home does not mean that Christmas is being celebrated as a religious holiday, that the tree is a ―seasonal decoration‖ without religious significance. But that is not exactly true. A little background is in order. Christmas – which means the Mass of Christ – is a celebration of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. But it wasn‘t until the year 350 C.E. that December 25 was officially adopted as the date of Christmas in the Roman Catholic Church. ―This date was probably chosen in response to the existence of pagan midwinter celebrations,‖ according to scholars. ―The days were short, plunging the people into darkness for most of their waking hours. The sun, a revered deity of the pagans, lost much of its power.‖ How did people respond to this loss of light? ―The people would use greens, a reminder of spring, and lights, a symbol of joy, to help brighten the dark days and nights.‖ Because bringing an evergreen tree into one‘s home at this time of year was so closely associated with pagans, the early church banned it use for Christmas! ―But as with many popular rituals,‖ Wolfson suggests, ―the people continued the I don‘t think we should shy away from sharing this explanation of the Christmas tree‘s significance with our children. They ought to know that it has religious meaning for Christians, just as the Hanukkah menorah has religious meaning for us. If we tell our children what the Christmas tree signifies, it should be easier to explain to them why it does not belong in our homes. Let them instead come to understand and appreciate the significance of the symbols and traditions of our winter-time holiday - Hanukkah. The hanukkiyah - to which we add another candle every night for 8 nights in order to remember the miracle of the cruse of oil discovered in the defiled Holy Temple. The potato latkes and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) – additional reminders of the miraculous oil from the time of the Maccabees. The Hanukkah gelt (Yiddish for ―money‖) – which recalls the fact that the Maccabean victory of the Syrian-Greek forces of Antiochus Epiphanes resulted in not only religious freedom but also independence for the Jews of Judea who minted their own coins as a concrete expression of their independence. And the Hanukkah dreidle (Yiddish for ―spinning top‖) – with its four letters proclaiming ―Nes Gadol Hayah Sham – a great miracle happened there!‖ And most of all, let us teach our children that while we respect and appreciate the traditions, symbols and ceremonies of other religious faiths, the enduring lesson of Hanukkah is that we must be vigilant in our preservation of Jewish values, ideas and practices, so as not to forsake or diminish the religious liberty for which Judah Maccabee and his brothers were ready to give their lives. Al Chamberlin 215-643-3668 or sign up online at www.redcrossblood.org From the Director’s Desk Edwin Altman As we transition into fall and early winter I can‘t help but reflect on the four separate holidays that we celebrate and that fit together so well under a single banner. First, on November 8th we participated in Election Day by hosting the local voting booths and election volunteers on our premises here at Temple Sinai. Hopefully the vast majority of us also went into those booths to cast our votes. Second, we celebrated Veteran‘s Day on November 11th and were privileged to have a wonderful Veteran‘s Day brunch the following Sunday. Thanksgiving rounded out our November calendar and we can now look forward to Chanukah in just a few weeks. What all these days have in common is the theme of Freedom. Our ability to elect those that we want without coercion or threat in a peaceful and organized way is a freedom that we should always cherish. Looking around the world it‘s not too difficult to find countries where those rights simply don‘t exist; where dictatorships flourish and ruthless regimes rule. Veteran‘s Day provides us with another opportunity to reflect upon and honor those who have served our country in the armed services and have helped fight for and preserve our freedoms. Chanukah of course reminds us of the Maccabean Revolt and our own people‘s struggle for freedom and the rededication of the Holy Temple. Finally, Thanksgiving Day offers the chance to think about all that we have to be grateful for; as citizens, the extraordinary freedoms we enjoy in the pursuit of our livelihood, our religion and our interests; as Jews, the freedom we have to worship, study and live our lives in accordance with our traditions; as individuals, the opportunities that are open to us to pursue the education, careers and lifestyle that fit us best. Hopefully, as we think about our world and as we prepare for lighting our Chanukah menorahs we will pause for a moment and reflect on all of the Freedoms we enjoy and how very different our lives might be had we lived in another time or place. Albert & Marsha Zeitzer 3 Betsy Lewinson, President It is a quiet place. That, in fact, may be one of its intended purposes--to provide a refuge fo r tho ug ht a nd co nte mp latio n. Nevertheless, the Martin and Lillian Josephs Library of Temple Sinai is too quiet. Originally established and stocked by the Josephs, these lovers of books intended for the library to become a source for the enjoyment and discovery of books as well as a ready reference for young and old. Instead, there was even a period of time when all of the volumes were packed away. What had happened to the Josephs‘ visions? Imagine, there was no room for books in our synagogue! Happily, after a building expansion, the handsome room bearing the name of the Josephs was provided. At that time Hazak assumed the responsibility of maintaining the library. Under the direction of volunteer librarian Sheila Gendelman, many Hazak members pitched in to assist in the major effort of unpacking, cataloging, and organizing the many books that had been stored away. Two faithful workers who still assist Sheila are Faith Silver and Marge Listman. What is in the library, you might ask. In the rear of the room there is a separate children‘s area with hundreds of books eagerly waiting to be fingered and perused. Funded by Harry and Lucille Rubenstein in memory of their parents, these shelves house Bible stories, holiday tales, and colorful picture books. Along the right-hand wall you will find a computer section donated by Joan and Manny Winokur in memory of their son, Bruce. This tech area is available for your personal use. In addition, Sheila has developed a Holocaust Studies shelf, a Customs and Ceremonies section, even a Music and Art collection. There is also a shelf that has bound volumes of every Temple Sinai News issue since its beginning. And let us not overlook the treasure of Judaica that surrounds the library. Talmud. History. Bible. Language. Rabbinics. True, many of these volumes are yellowed and musty, but they are filled with knowledge of our people. Here is an extensive resource for our teachers and older students. How wonderful it would be if the preschool children visited the children‘s corner for a story time with a special guest reader. They would come to know that Temple Sinai has another cozy place for story hour besides their classroom. They might discover books they would like to take home. Sheila discussed with me how she is faced with the task of sorting through the endless cartons of cast-off books that people drop off. Decisions must be made about shelving and disposing of duplicates. Shelf space is running out. As tightly-packed as the Religious School schedule is, wouldn‘t it be worthwhile for the classes to experience periodic visits to the library, even a half hour every few months. During these sessions, they could be introduced to various volumes of interest to their age levels and interests. They could hear profiles of famous people or snippets of history or adventures of Israel‘s leaders or battles. The possibilities are endless. But through these mini trips they would be made aware that their synagogue houses a world of reading resources for them. Yet, as the number of volumes has increased, library visitations have not. While this room is utilized for classes and for meetings, the Martin and Lillian Josephs Library of Temple Sinai has lost its identity. It has become a buried treasure. It languishes in our building, becoming a geniza. This possibility cannot be allowed to occur. I think that Hazak has capable members who would be willing to assume the above roles. I look forward to hearing from you, members and professional staff, about the possibility of implementing these suggestions. It is also my hope that Hazak will be able to gather a corps of volunteers to assist Sheila in creating a cheerful, appealing, and accessible library. On the contemporary side, the library subscribes to many current periodicals and newspaper. There is a substantial selection of current fiction and nonfiction books. You will also discover many ―oldies‖ but ―goodies‖ as well. Next time you bring your child to class or to a lesson, why don‘t you allow an extra few minutes so that you can browse? Next time you go to the gift shop, instead of passing right by, stop in and check out the library. If you are attending an adult Hazak Books & Brunch Sunday, February 12th Details on back cover! 4 education class, why not arrive a few minutes earlier so that you can introduce yourself to the library? You will be pleasantly surprised. Hazak Tour of Beth Sholom Synagogue & lunch at Max & David’s Kosher Restaurant! Sunday, January 15, 2012 $8 for the tour Lunch cost TBD More details to follow! Yad Vashem Adds Temple Sinai’s Film “Remember Us” to its Archives How do we teach our children living in comfort and security about the enormity of the Holocaust? And more importantly, after the last survivor passes on, how will our children teach their children, so that the world will never forget the horrors that can occur when we fail to guard against evil. This is an ongoing challenge of Holocaust education. In response to this concern, Temple Sinai, under the leadership of George Marcus, Chair of our Holocaust Education Committee, and producer Mark Zumoff, announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers, created Remember Us - a Holocaust film for children featuring the children of Temple Sinai. Today, most children learning about the Holocaust from Survivors only see people that look like their grandparents. However, the true story is that the experiences of the Survivors that children see and hear today are not stories of their grandparents but really are stories about children – just like themselves. Most of the remaining survivors were only children during WWII living a normal life not that much different from Upper Dublin or any other place. Temple Sinai attempted to create a film that would reach across the ages to teach children about the experiences of other children very similar to themselves in order that they learn -- and more importantly ―feel‖ -- how a child felt experiencing Kristalnacht or a concentration camp. The film Remember Us bridges the generations with the stories of Temple Sinai survivors recalling their days as children during the Holocaust with children of our generation. This is a formula which we hope will allow our children to learn about the Holocaust in a more personal way, helping to ensure that they, and the world, will never forget. As part of its on going mission to safeguard the memory of the past and imparts its meaning to future generations, Yad Vashem, Israel‘s Holocaust Museum and Resource Center, has elected to include Temple Sinai‘s film Remember Us in its collection. In making this decision, museum officials stated, ―We believe that by depositing a copy of your film in the Visual Center‘s collection you will enable us to stimulate interest in it among our visitors. We are convinced that this interest will result in public acquisitions, educational activities, academic attention and film industry awareness.‖ The Yad Vashem Visual Center is the leading international digital film library of Holocaust cinema. It was established in 2005 for the collection, study and viewing of films about the Holocaust and related subjects. The construction of the Visual Center was made possible through the generosity of the Steven Spielberg Righteous Persons Foundation. Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate, Avner Shalev, explains: ―The primary objective of the Visual Center is to create the leading portal through which scholars, students, filmmakers and the general public can view and access information about Holocaust films.‖ Remember Us is a film of discussions between young teenage students with people who experienced the Holocaust. There was no teacher. There were no lectures. Each child participated by researching either a survivor‘s or a liberator‘s stories and then assembling questions which pertained to that individual‘s experiences. What ensued was a conversation between children and adults separated by generations that created a bond that will forever link them to each other. During the project, an emotional moment occurred when one of the students came to the realization that this generation will likely be the last generation to actually speak with a survivor. According to George Marcus, ―This was the reason why this film was made and I believe why Yad Vashem wants it as part of its archives.‖ For more information please contact: George Marcus gmarcus1943@comcast.net Israel Advocacy at Temple Sinai The roots of advocacy for Israel reside in the soul, the heart and the mind of every Jewish person. Our opening event, featuring Jane Golden, Director of Philadelphia Mural Arts, inspired each and every person to live according to the statement, ―One person can truly make a difference‖. Over and over again, we see Sisterhood making a difference. Against the backdrop of pressing personal and professional commitments, each sister makes important and meaningful contributions to synagogue life. Our rummage sale, made possible by Debbie Krochtengel and Suzan Hirsch not only raised funds for TS, but helped hundreds in our community by selling, at the lowest possible prices, quality clothing and household goods. Sisterhood educates one another through monthly Rosh Chodesh discussions, facilitated by committed women who take the time to study and research Jewish text and literature. Information about important events come to our attention only because our ‗sisters‘ create programs, the flyers and then prepare mailings, one envelope at a time. A room for a meeting or event appears welcoming because one by one, our ‗sisters‘ gather the flowers, refreshments, beautiful table cloths, and seasonal centerpieces that create warmth and beauty. (Jerusalem). Every time we give to Torah Fund, whether $18 or $180, we are strengthening these institutions. Each of these schools inform everything we do in our Jewish lives as members of the conservative movement. Torah Fund has been a vital source of support for JTS and its students, raising more than 66 million dollars. Temple Sinai Sisterhood is just one in an international network of Jewish women worldwide. Sisterhoods across the world are supported by Women‘s League, the voice of women in the Conservative movement. The mission of Women‘s League for Conservative Judaism is to strengthen and unite synagogue women‘s groups and their members. Women's League encourages sisterhood members to support Conservative Judaism. One significant way in which we do this is through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign. This year, for the first time, Temple Sinai Sisterhood Shabbat and Torah Fund Brunch, are joining together. On January 28, 2012, Sisterhood will again lead a beautiful Shabbat Service followed by a congregational luncheon. On this Shabbat morning, we will honor the Jewish Theological Seminary and its ongoing contributions to our religious, spiritual and educational lives. Requests for Torah Fund donations will arrive in the mail in December and we trust every sister will contribute to Torah Fund at her own comfortable level. Once again, we will demonstrate that, one by one, we make a difference. Anne Frank wrote, ―How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.‖ I trust our sisters will take to heart this sensitive quote and continue to demonstrate how, indeed, one person can truly make a difference. I have been asked, ―What does the Torah Fund Campaign do, exactly?‖ The Torah Fund campaign perpetuates conservative Judaism through financial support of The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA) and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies Sisterhood Torah Fund Every woman has the opportunity to participate in preserving, promoting and perpetuating Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund Campaign of Women's League in support of The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, NY), Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, CA) and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem). The Torah Fund campaign was first launched in 1942 as a scholarship fund. In 1963, it combined with the Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall campaign that provided housing for undergraduate students. Since then, Torah Fund has been a vital source of support for JTS and its students, raising more than 66 million dollars. Temple Sinai Players Seussical” is Underway! More than 60 people showed up in early December to sing and dance their way into the cast of Seussical, the Musical. The Players are thrilled to have had our largest turnout ever for auditions. It can be so stress inducing to stand before your peers and sing, to learn a dance and a minute later to be hoofing across the floor. Kudos to those who did it, all while smiling, laughing, and otherwise having a good time. We have many new and returning faces participating on stage with us. You will be delighted to see all of your friends and fellow congregants entertain you at the production in February! For those who‘d rather be behind the scenes building or painting sets, helping backstage, selling food or flowers, or helping create weird hairdos for the ―whos‖ we look forward to having you join us soon. We start our behind the scenes work in a few weeks. Please stop by anytime and see us rehearse and watch (or help out) as Temple Sinai gets transformed over the next few months into the World of Dr. Seuss!!! From Jewish retreats to canoeing, summer tent and winter cabin camping, and merit badges to Courts of Honor, boy scouts have the opportunity to explore their heritage, the outdoors, and be an active participant in their own growth and development. On December 11th, Adam Solomon, Brian Wheatman and Ryan Zeitzer will each be awarded the highest advancement award that the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award. These boys are part of a select group of scouts nationwide, since only approximately 4% of all Boy Scouts attain this rank. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community service project to earn this rank. Many outstanding American citizens have become Eagle Scouts, including former president Gerald R. Ford, Jr., astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, and Philadelphia Philly Shane Victorino. This summer, a number of scouts from Troop 665 attended a week-long session of 10 scout camp at the Ockanickon scout reservation in Bucks County. Camping in platform tents, the scouts enjoyed nature, participated in scout activities, and had loads of fun. Scout camp is an integral part of the scouting experience as it promotes selfsufficiency and independence. The boys were supervised by adults from the Troop, including Eagle Scout Aaron Smerling, several parents, and the Scout Masters. Continuing their outdoor experiences, the scouts took advantage of the late summer weather by canoeing and camping at the Rodney Scout Reservation in Maryland. The older scouts took the opportunity to teach the younger scouts some of the finer points of camping and outdoor cooking. More recently they enjoyed the changing of the leaves and brisk fall weather while cabin camping and hiking near Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania. One of the highlights of the year is the annual Kinnus retreat at Camp Briarwood in Furlong, PA. Sponsored by the Jewish Committee on Scouting, the weekend combines scouting with a camp-style Shabbat experience. Jr. Assistant Scout Master Ryan Zeitzer was awarded scouting‘s Etz Chayim religious award at the retreat. Troop 665‘s fall Court of Honor recognized the scouts and others for their many achievements. Robert Kushner was recognized for earning the rank of Star Scout. Numerous merit badges were awarded, reflecting those earned at summer camp and through individual pursuits. Patches and other mementos were given to scouts and adults in recognition and/or thanks for their participation in activities and assistance to the Troop. Finally, Scout Master Bill Gant was the recipient of a big Happy Birthday celebration! Cub Scouts is open to all boys ages 7-10 and Boy Scouts is open to all boys ages 1117. In recognition of Temple Sinai's sponsorship, Troop 665 observes kosher on its trips and activities. The three boys, Adam Neal Solomon, Brian Wheatman, and Ryan Max Zeitzer each earned the highest advancement award that the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award. Adam Neal Solomon, 18, son of Randee and Eric Solomon of Ambler, currently attends Temple University. During his time with Troop 665, he was an active member of the Order of the Arrow, traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico twice and was a Patrol Leader at the National Scout Jamboree. For his Eagle Project, he led the refurbishment of the library at Tiferet Bet Israel Synagogue in Blue Bell, PA, where he is a member. He attended Wissahickon HS, where he was a goalie for the ice hockey team and played clarinet and saxophone in the jazz band. Brian Wheatman, 17, son of Ellen and Steven Wheatman of Lower Gwynedd is a Junior at Germantown Academy. He is the current Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 665. His favorite part of Boy Scouts has been the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. He also attended the Boy Scout Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. For his Eagle Project, he helped preserve the Wissahickon Valley Watershed, so that local residents can enjoy the natural environment in their own area. He is a member of Congregation Beth Or in Maple Glen, PA. Ryan Max Zeitzer, celebrating his 18th birthday on the day of the event, is the son of Drs. Randi and Ken Zeitzer. He is a Senior at Upper Dublin High School. He is the former Senior Patrol Leader and is currently serving as the Jr. Assistant Scout Master. He earned the Ner Tamid and Etz Chayim religious awards as well as the Eagle Scout Bronze Palm and is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He also attended the Boy Scout Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. For his Eagle Project, he removed, created and installed new trail signs at Robbins Park, a community/ educational park used by both Upper Dublin Schools and the township. He is a member of Temple Sinai, Dresher, PA. Girl Scout Troop 7053 by Kymme Kaufman It has been a very fun and exciting few months for Girl Scout Troop 7053. We kicked off our fourth year as a Troop with a trip to Color Me Mine to paint pottery and earn our Ceramics and Clay Badge. The girls experimented with different ways of getting the paint onto the pottery such as ―flicking the paint brush‖ and using sponges to name a few. The inner artist in each of us came shining through. It was a wonderful way to begin the year. Our next exciting event was a trip to the S.P.C.A. where we had a tour of the facility and learned all about the mission of the S.P.C.A. It was a lot of fun seeing all of the adorable animals and learning all about animal rescue and adoption. The S.P.C.A could not exist without the help of charitable donations. Our Troop donated old towels. The trip to the S.P.C.A. really opened our eyes to the fact that our society needs to help animals as well as people. So, at our next Girl Scout meeting, we made homemade dog biscuits. All it takes is some flour, eggs, oil and garlic salt to make a tasty doggie treat. We had such a blast making these biscuits. The girls each took turns tasting them. They tasted like garlic bread and were delicious. The biscuits got delivered to the S.P.C.A. on Election Day. Hopefully the dogs enjoyed the biscuits as much as our Troop did. In November we attended a Bowling Party run by our Girl Scout Service Unit. We got to hang out with Girl Scouts from other Troops in our area and bowl the night away. It was awesome. The lights were dimmed, the music was blasting and for two hours we got to show off our bowling skills. In December we will be seeing the Musical Annie at the Pennsylvania Youth Theatre and in January we will have an overnighter in the New Jersey Adventure Aquarium. This year‘s cookie sale theme, ―What can a cookie do?‖, reminds girls that they have the power to do anything they set their minds to and they have the ability to make positive changes in our world. Girl Scout cookies are not only popular here in the US but also are popular abroad. Girl Scout cookies continue to be one of the most requested items by soldiers. Girl Scouts are collecting donations of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for our military men and women deployed overseas. Show your support by purchasing an extra box or two to be sent to our Troops serving us abroad (Through the USO). Troop 7053 has a goal of sending 200 boxes to the Troops. Help us reach our goal. Each box of cookies sends a message that America is thinking about them. Look for our cookie booth in Temple Sinai starting in January. Finally, the countdown to cookie season has begun. The 2012 Girl Scout cookie sale will begin on Thursday, January 19, 2012. 11 Youth Activities Shelly Shotel, Director of Youth Programming and Congregational Learning Specialist Makor/Kadima This past month we had an incredible time on Election Day where we began our day donating our time and energies, as well as, many ―goods‖ to Cradles to Crayons. The group was 41 children strong working together for a common good. The kids were so excited and involved in making a difference for other children. I really felt that many, if not all, the children pushed themselves to look beyond their own wants and needs. The kids cleaned shoes and sorted clothing by type, size and season. The work they did lasted about two hours and then they debriefed over a small snack. In our debriefing, the kids shared many of their heart-felt thoughts about their dedication to their task on this day. There were many comments saying that it was hard work but it felt good! A few who had not ever been to Cradles to Crayons before commented that they were going to come back with their families. After all their hard work we hopped The Whipping Man Show and Dinner Downtown *DECEMBER 18, 2011 12- 6:45pm* Itinerary: Brown Bag kosher lunch from 12 – 1pm Bus departs Temple Sinai at 1pm Arden Theater – The Whipping Man from 2:00-4:15pm Dinner at Max Brenner, Chocolate By The Bald Man 4:30 – 6:00pm Bus returns by 6:45pm Tickets are limited! (Make this show and dinner a memorable and yummy Hanukkah gift) Kadima members: $68 Non- members: $78 (If needed, kindly inquire about financial help.) (Also may be made in two payments if needed.) on the bus and ventured out to The Oasis Family Fun Center. At the fun center, we had pizza and a drink all together and then went off in small groups to explore this new indoor activity center. The kids participated in rock climbing, trampoline basketball, laser maze, and indoor playground activities that had many soft things being shot out at them (something kids seem to really like to dodge!) and arcade games! The bonding among the kids was my favorite part to watch! Again, I know that several children did miss out on this trip since they still had school but I sure hope next time we can count them in! Join in on the fun as we celebrate the Chanukah 2011 through comedy! In addition, if you are involved in other groups within our Temple Sinai community and would like to participate with the children on MLK Day- kindly contact Shelly at sshotel@tsinai.com. An important message from the Youth Director: Shelly Shotel and Girl Scout Troop Leader Kymme Kaufman Dear Temple Sinai Congregation: This month and for the first half of January Temple Sinai Makor and Kadima Youth Programs and the Girl Scouts have teamed up to help some local charities in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties for Martin Luther King Day of service. During this day of service, our Temple Sinai and other community based children between the ages of 7-14 will be volunteering to help local charities as described below: The Domestic Violence Shelter – Laurel House. Norristown, Pennsylvania Our children will create much needed toiletry bags, as well as pillows with comforting messages and pictures decorated on pillowcases. The toiletry bags will contain a bar of soap, sample size shampoo and a washcloth. The bags and pillows will be given to each person entering the shelter for protection from domestic violence. Our children have a goal of helping 50 families that need the services of this shelter. •Soap •Shampoo - individual sizes •Pillows •Washcloths- dollar store item •Pillow cases •Box of gallon sized zip lock bags Community Food Cupboard-The Interfaith Housing Alliance - Ambler, PA We will be collecting non-perishable and long shelf life food products to help restock the Community Food Cupboard in Ambler. After the holidays, the Community Food Cupboard will be bare. Help us restock their shelves to get them through the remainder of the winter. •Boxes of cereal •Raisins •Canned fruit/Canned fruit juices •Spaghetti Sauce •Paper Goods: napkins, plates •Peanut Butter, Soy Butter •Boxes of Macaroni and cheese •cups and silverware •Jelly- all flavors •Tuna fish •Jello •Pudding •Toilette paper •Additional food items with a long shelf life •Crackers •Pasta •Cleaning supplies •Breakfast bars Cook For a Friend- A community based program located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the JCC Klein Branch. This charity provides Kosher packaged meals or Kosher breakfast bags for homebound seniors. We will be creating breakfast bags filled with Kosher nonperishable breakfast items. Last year we created 250 bags. This year our goal is to create 300+ breakfast bags. In order to achieve this goal, we are asking that you, your extended family and place of business partner with us and donate a comfortable dollar amount to help us reach our goal. Kindly write your check out to Temple Sinai and place “Cook for a Friend donation - MLK day” on your memo line. You can either mail in your check to Temple Sinai, c/o Shelly Shotel- MLK collection, 1401 Limekiln Pike, Dresher, PA 19025 or feel free to leave it in the Youth Mailbox in the Temple Sinai main office. Every little bit will help our kids learn the value of creating these bags. In addition, there are two other charities we will be volunteering for on MLK day that do not require a collection. Lastly, if you are not involved in the youth programs yet or would like to help out on MLK day, forward your information to Shelly at sshotel@tsinai.com to sign up. Again, our children are hoping to make a difference for many people on MLK day of service. Anything you can do to help our kids achieve these goals will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Shelly Shotel at sshotel@tsinai.com. Most Sincerely, Shelly Shotel and Kymme Kaufman Temple Sinai USY by Edy Israel On October 22nd, 15 USYers came out for our kick-off event: Havdallah and a Haunted Hay Ride. We kicked off the night with S‘mores and Ice Breakers around the camp fire and then headed through the dark woods of Winding Brook Farms. Everyone had a great time and a lot of new friendships were formed. The Regional USY Kickoff Dance was cancelled due to our early fall snow storm, but we had over 15 kids signed up. The Annual Turkey Trot Dance took place the night before Thanksgiving. Temple Sinai was represented with over 25 USYers who joined close to 500 kids from across Hagesher Region and EPA. On Tuesday, December 13th at 6pm, Temple Sinai USY and Temple Sinai‘s Men‘s Club are hosting ―The Great Latke Taste Test‖. This event will take place until the beginning of JCHS and is FREE!! You must RSVP to me by December 11th. (Dinner will be served with the latkes!) We are also looking for parents who would like to volunteer for that evening to help with cooking/serving/tallying votes. Please respond to me at eisrael@tsinai.com USY International Convention is taking over Philadelphia! IC will take place at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown from December 25th to 30th. (Pre-convention is December 23rd-25th with New Frontier). We are in need of parents and USY Alumni that would like to help chaperone. If you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible. eisrael@tsinai.com Wishing everyone a bright and special Chanukah and a happy and healthy New Year! 13 B’nai Mitzvah Jesse Burak, Son of Lisa Rovner & Richard Burak Zachary Matez, Son of Laurie & David Matez Isaac Gold, Son of Michelle & Barry Gold December 10, 2011 December 17, 2011 December 17, 2011 Jesse is a 7th grade student at Sandy Run Middle School. He began his Jewish education at the Ann Newman Preschool and spent 3 summers at Camp Macabee. Jesse loves reading, video games, and playing sports - especially baseball and basketball. He is also an avid fan of all the Philly sports teams. Jesse has spent the last 7 summers at Ramah Day Camp and Camp Ramah in the Poconos. Jesse‘s mitzvah project is one that is especially meaningful to him and his family. He collected donations of new and gently used items that will be donated to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. These items will help to make a very difficult time seem less stressful for the babies and families who are there receiving care. Thanks to the many extraordinary doctors and nurses who give so much, Jesse is able (and extremely excited) to celebrate this awesome milestone with his parents, Lisa and Rich, his sister Blair, his grandparents, Marlene and Ken Rovner, as well as his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Zachary is a 7th grade student at Saligman Middle School, a part of the Perelman Jewish Day School system. His Jewish education began at Temple Sinai at the Ann Newman Preschool and he attended Camp Maccabee as well. He enjoys reading books, creating unique inventions, and is active in Boy Scouts. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Zachary continues to attend JRA (Jewish Relief Agency) on a monthly basis, helping to pack and deliver food for those in our community who are in need. He also collected new board games which he will donate to several local charities including the Ronald McDonald House, Children‘s Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Kisses for Kyle Foundation. Sharing in this special day are his parents Laurie and David, his grandmother Carole Golub, his brother, Marshall, his sister, Liana, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Special memories of his great-grandparents will be with him as he stands on the bimah…they would be so proud of him this day and always. Isaac is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on December 17th. Isaac has been at Temple Sinai since the age of 2 when he attended the Ann Newman Preschool. The foundation of the preschool was not only the beginning of his Jewish studies, but also the start of some of his closest friendships. Isaac‘s passion is sports and we mean any kind of sports. He started playing at the ripe age of 3 and hasn‘t stopped since. He actually continues to add different sports to his repertoire. He has played soccer, basketball and baseball for Upper Dublin. He played on the Upper Dublin travel soccer team for the past 4 years and this Fall made the Sandy Run Soccer Team. He is a 7th grader at Sandy Run Middle School. Recently he started to play tennis and golf and loves them too. Isaac has identical twin brothers, Ryan and Aaron that have both been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes within the past 3 years. Needless to say, finding a mitzvah project was not too difficult. Isaac spearheaded a fundraising effort for JDRF‘s ‖Walk to Cure Diabetes‖, which occurred on October 23rd. The fundraising effort started in May in which we created bracelets to sell that said, ―Cure Diabetes‖. In addition, he sent letters to close family and friends and asked to donate in our behalf. We created a family team, Team Goldzilla. In combination with the bracelet sale plus the donations, our family raised $8,000 in an effort to find a cure. Isaac will be sharing his simcha with his parents, Michelle and Barry Gold, his brothers, Ryan and Aaron, his GiGi, great-grandparents, grandparents: Bubbie and Papa/Mommom and Poppop, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends and of course, the only girl in our family, his dog Sadie. 14 B’nai Mitzvah Jesse Weiner, Son of Sheri Hoffman & Rubin Weiner Maxine Levin, Daughter of Audrey & Barry Levin January 7, 2012 January 14, 2012 Jesse Drew Weiner is a 7th grader at Sandy Run Middle School. He attended the Temple Sinai Ann Newman Preschool, and then Perelman Jewish Day School from Gan through 5th grade. He began Sandy Run in 6th grade and is currently studying his third language: French. Jesse spends his summers at Camp Sesame Rockwood in Blue Bell, and is looking forward to going to Rockwood Adventures this summer. In his spare time Jesse reads, makes movies, plays baseball for Upper Dublin, and roots for his beloved Florida Marlins baseball team. One of his hobbies is traveling to baseball stadiums across the country; he has been to 16 so far. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Jesse volunteered at Camp Maccabee for a week this past summer. He attended the camp as a child, and he had a great time working with the preschoolers, helping them to enjoy camp as he did. Jesse shares his bar mitzvah with his parents, Sheri and Rubin Weiner, his sister, Gwendolyn, and his brother, Ari. Also celebrating will be his grandparents Anita and Alan Hoffman. Jesse looks forward to celebrating with many dear aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, some of whom will be coming from a great distance. Grandparents Greta and Morris Weiner will be with him in spirit. Maxx is a 7th grade student at Sandy Run Middle School. She began her Jewish education at Ann Newman Preschool and also attended Camp Macabee. Maxx also enjoyed being part of Cantor Freedman's choir. Maxx has spent the past 3 summers focusing on performing arts at Burn Brae Day Camp and is looking forward to the upcoming summer at French Woods Performing Arts Camp. Along with her academic accomplishments, Maxx has dedicated much time learning to play piano and singing. Maxx enjoys being active and participating in a variety of sports activities volleyball, basketball , football, and track. She enjoys spending time with family and friends. She is happiest texting, talking or hanging out with friends. She likes to relax with a good book, as well as taking care of the family pets. During Maxx's Bat Mitzvah she will be honoring the memory of Aliese Fleischmann. Aliese was born August 19, 1930, in Germany. She was twelve years old when she perished in the Piaski Camp. One and half million children died during the Holocaust. Approximately, 150,000 of them were at the age of becoming a b'nai mitzvah. Maxx is interested in helping children in Israel as well. She raised over $2,000 for Jewish National Fund and is sending all of the money to five different Israeli camp sites. Maxx shares her special day with her parents, Audrey and Barry, and her brothers, Joey and David. She is very fortunate to have such special relationships with her grandparents, Susan and Ronald Panitch, and Anita and Bob Levin, and great-grandmother, Mollie Sussman. Maxx is looking forward to celebrating with all of her extended family and friends. You can save your family this unnecessary stress by purchasing your gravesite now and prearranging your funeral. Buying a cemetery plot is a decision you can make today for a time when your family must go on without you or a loved one. In order to address our congregants‘ needs, in 1954 Temple Sinai purchased grave sites at nearby King David Memorial Park in Bensalem. Approximately 35 percent of the gravesites remain. These are available to members and their families at a reasonable price, substantially less than at other cemeteries. The first light is placed on the right of the menorah; and an additional candle is added each night from right to left, but the newest candle is lit first. The lights should burn for at least half an hour each night and, during this time, the light being shed should not be used for any type of illumination or utilitarian purpose. It is customary to light the candles right after sundown, while on Friday evening they should be lit before the Shabbat candles. Each night, first light the Shamash (the tallest candle) which will light all of the other candles, and recite the brachot below. Below are the blessings over lighting the Menorah. The first two blessings are said every night, while the third blessing is recited only on the first night. 1. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech ha-olam a-sher ki-desha-nu be-mitz-vo-tav ve-tzi-va-nu le-had-lik ner Cha-nu-kah. 1 2. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-heche-yanu ve-ki-yi-ma-nu ve-higi-a-nu liz-man ha-zeh. 3 Translation: 1. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light. 2. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this time. 3. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion. Hot Latkes! Ingredients 2 cups peeled and shredded potatoes 1 tablespoon grated onion 3 eggs, beaten 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/2 cup peanut oil for frying Directions 1. 1.
