JP2 Love John Paul II - poetry Judyta Papp - photography President Shimon Peres President Nelson Mandela Professor Zbigniew Brzeziński Most. Rev. Dr. Mouneer Hanna Anis He was the moral guide in times when progress in science and technology did not go hand in hand with progress in compassion and common care.. Nelson Mandela President of the Republic of South Africa 1994-1999 It has been five years since His death and, despite that, he is still kept alive in our minds and hearts and the memory of him does not fade. We miss Karol Wojtyła as a man and as a kindly father, and we miss John Paul II, marking new paths with his spirit and wisdom, the people’s Pope. “I wish to live in community with people” – he said. Indeed, His skill to communicate with everybody, no matter their origin and beliefs, was his distinguishing mark. It was during His pontificate that diplomatic relations were established between the Vatican and Israel, which opened new, constructive channels for dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Jewish nation. After this step had been taken other historic events followed, namely the first visit of His Holiness in the Holy Land in March 2000. Replacing war with peace, hate with love, supporting the spirit of tolerance and mutual respect became his mission. Warmth and kindness he emanated during his stay in the Holy Land defeated a long-lasting barrier and opened a new era of co-existence. A verse from one of his poems became to me the essence of His person: “Love explained me all – love solved all”. How true these words are for this distinguished person that built bridges connecting people rather than dig gaps between them. His teaching concerning the most important questions of the world became a lesson on human values, still valid and a valuable message for future generations. Of freedom he said “Freedom means not doing what we will, but it is the right to do what we ought to”. “Future – he said – begins today, not tomorrow”. According to him “Social justice cannot be gained by force. Violence kills what it means to create”. How true these words are in these times of violence and terror. He also said “What concerns the family, concerns the nation and the world in which we live. This philosophy ought to penetrate the consciousness of the family of nations. It is good that an album devoted to underlining the unusual image of Pope John Paul II who claimed that a closed heart is the worst prison. He was free of that prison as whole His heart was open to all and to all he became an inspiration. His whole life was a journey connecting people with heaven. We pray from Jerusalem for peace for his soul and for the world to become a better place to live as he wished. Jerusalem, 8th March 2010 Shimon Peres President of the State of Israel 1 Sacrificial words need a priest. - Someone walks a road against the winds - Who are you old man, who in an eve sultry of human grievance enter the theatron? to sacrificial you proceed tiers who are you old man? - I am a man-actor. His hair scattered on his old shoulder he ruled the word and did not squander. Logos VIII 2 To know less but to believe more. Close the eyelids slowly before dawn full of shivering, then push away with sight the tide of starry coast, over which the day is hung. Dear God, change the closed eyes into eyes wide open and the faint breath of the soul vibrating in the cracks of the rosessurroundwith huge wind. Stanislas, 1 104 105 Piotr Adamczyk, movie: A Man Who Became Pope, 2004 For me, Pope John Paul II is the first true spiritual and religious leader on a global scale in the history of mankind. Until now, all religious leaders appealed to a limited audience, both theologically and geographically. John Paul II overcomes these limitations not only by effective and skilful use of mass media, but also by the power of his personality and his deep spirituality. Zbigniew Brzezinski 140
