I Islanders got a jump on holiday shopping at the first Left Bank Art Fest held at the Esplanade on Oct. 14. Warm sunshine and tropical island breezes welcomed residents and visitors as they strolled among the many tents displaying jewelry, paintings, sculpture, art glass, fiber arts, pottery and more. Presented by the Marco Island Foundation for the Arts, the festival was free to the public and are held seven times each season to support the arts community on Marco Island. A field of over 90 golfers teed it up in Christmas Island Style’s Annual Golf Outing at the Marriott’s Rookery course in Fiddler’s Creek, raising funds for the seasonal celebrations just ahead. A glorious morning gave a hint of the cooler weather that comes along with the Christmas season island, and a who’s who of Marco Islanders got out on the course or manned the volunteer tables to help out. The ninth in it’s series of “shred parties” once again brought out a steady stream of Islanders looking to dispose of unwanted but sensitive documents. Jay Uzzalinno, account manager for ShredIt, which donates the use of the massive truck-mounted shredder, said their truck holds four tons of “shred,” and he counts on it heading home loaded to the max. This edition of the shredding event was designated the “Family, Physical and Financial Fitness Shred Party,” with all proceeds benefitting the “Y Reads” program at the Greater Marco Family YMCA. Members of the Knights of Columbus called it the”Preseason Dinner,” a warm up for when season begins. Originally the first spaghetti dinner, with Knights organizers Al Schulick, Herman Giglio, Chris Karlik and Bud LaMendola, was done to help a church woman’s group in 1978. The next dinner and subsequent fish dinner nights have been Knights of Columbus fundraisers. Prep work for the dinner begins the day before. In season more than 600 take part in dinners during Lent. Stan’s reopened for its first weekend of the season, for the first time without the iconic Goodland namesake, who died in June at 86. Midway through Sunday afternoon, a deluge arrived, joining the hundreds of revelers who came to partake of the goodtime fun and remember the man who wasn’t there. “We’re not going to replace him – we can’t. But we are not changing this place. That would be the biggest mistake I ever made,” said Steve Gober, Stan’s youngest son, now in the position of owner/manager. The FiveHour Sale on Oct. 22 in the Y’s gymnasium, was organized and presented by the ladies of the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island. The slogan for the event was “holiday gift bargains for the whole family,” and the Y and JCMI sharef in the proceeds.
