Social Studies Tom Williams signs his book for friends and fans. Williams and Robert Gelinas, publisher of ArcheBooks. Local Author Tom Williams held a book signing for his new suspense novel, Lost and Found, at Sunshine Book Sellers on Collier Boulevard September 19. Fans flocked to see Williams and talk with him about his book and get their personally autographed copies. The Marco Island Historical Society treated Tommie Barfield students to a special presentation of the Historical Society’s Players, portraying the old timers who used to live here—a great way to learn about the history of Marco Island. Guests gathered at the popular event to enjoy Happy Hour and the sounds of Greg Miller and the Tributes. A replica of the Vietnam Wall memorial arrived in Naples in September. The Dignity Memorial® Vietnam Wall, a 240-footlong, eight-foot-high, three-quarter-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC, traveled the country to more than 200 cities with more to come. The Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Collier, the Collier County Veterans Council and Naples Memorial Funeral Home and Cemetery worked with volunteers and civic organizations to bring the display to Southwest Florida. MARCO | 73 Social Studies Leadership Marco Class of 2008 was treated to Media Day on October 1. The day included a tour of the Marco Eagle, with General Manager Bob Sandy, Community Events Manager Mary Quinton, Editor Bill Green, Sales Manager Marc Welch and Marco Magazine Editor B.J. Friends of Tommie Barfield Elementary School hosted a Vegas Island Style night at the Palladian Villa on South Barfield Drive September 27. Nearly 200 attended the gala, and approximately $8,000 was raised to benefit the school. MARCO | 74 Social Studies The Kiwanis Club of Marco sponsored a Child Awareness Fair on October 18 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Children were treated to a special visit by a clown and the Tooth Fairy, and many local businesses, civic associations and city services distributed free information and products. Free child identification was provided by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The Marco Island Historical Society hosted “Roots of Marco’s Past” at Mackle Park on October 7. A panel of “Old Timers” who lived on the Island before the 1960s discussed their memories of Marco Island, Goodland and Caxambas. Panel members included Henry Lowe, Lois Howard Crews, Carson Bomar, Marilyn Rimes Sims, Michael Griffis, Lucille Doxsee Thompson, Curtis Wyman Bostick and Nellie Hamilton Whitehurst. On October 20 State Senator Burt Saunders attended a Meet-and-Greet hosted by Island attorneys Woodward, Pires and Lombardo at the practice’s office on Bald Eagle Drive. Congressman Connie Mack was the guest of honor at the Marco Police Foundation luncheon held at CJ’s on the Bay at The Esplanade October 22. Islanders and visitors enjoyed a sunny day filled with great German food, fun for the kids, live entertainment and a whole lot more! A beautiful day drew hundreds to the event. Bailey and Joe Kelly. Betty Newman gets the party going with line dancing. Prudential Florida Realty hosted a fundraiser October 26 for the Sunshine Kids organization at Porky’s Last Stand. Prudential embraces this charity to help benefit children with cancer, and it was an outstanding hit, with fabulous attendance and many generous donations through the door prizes and auction items. There was dancing, a great dinner, prizes and lots of fun! Congratulations to Sonny Saunders and Rhea Nichols, winners of the Naples Digital Photography Club’s “Picture of the Year” final competition. Sale e Pepe’s pastry chef, Emmanuel Boscherel, won top honors at the Florida Pastry Challenge, held in Orlando recently. The entire piece is made from sugar. Michelle Obama’s July visit to Fort Myers drew hundreds of people. Local resident Vicki Baker and her daughter, Madison, captured these great photos at the event.
