THINGS TO REMEMBER
STUDENT LIFE
DEAR STUDENTS,
Le Bouveret
It is a great pleasure to introduce you to the Valais, the
birthplace of the legendary hotelier, César Ritz.
The Professional Centre César Ritz is located in Le
Bouveret, a small, French-speaking town on the shores
of Lake Geneva, in a magnificent building dating back to
the early 1900’s.
Before becoming “The Hotelier of Kings” and “The King
of Hoteliers”, young César chose to leave his home to go
abroad to gain knowledge and experience. With hard
work, new ideas, flair and a touch of class, he was able
to accomplish an unprecedented career in the hospitality
industry and rose to legendary status.
Switzerland
At César Ritz Colleges Switzerland, our philosophy
is impregnated with the values that made the above
success story possible and we will make sure that you
receive first-class training. It is our mission to provide
you with the best education possible and enable you to
achieve a successful career in the hospitality industry.
All the members of our faculty and staff are dedicated to
this mission but it is up to you to take advantage of their
wealth of knowledge. Please remember to get to know
your fellow students; there is so much to gain from all
the different cultures that are present here.
I'm looking forward to welcoming you to César Ritz
Colleges Switzerland.
Our modern student accommodation and surrounding
26,000 m² park and gardens make the Professional
Centre César Ritz one of the most attractive and
beautifully situated hotel schools in Switzerland!

With its yacht harbour, Le Bouveret is a summer
lakeside resort with easy access to major cities and
towns in Switzerland including Geneva, Lausanne
and Montreux; and only minutes away from the
French border and the town of Evian. Geneva airport
can be reached by train in about an hour and a half;
Zurich airport in approximately three. With such
a centrally located campus it is easy to travel throughout
Europe on weekends.
Founded in 1291, Switzerland has almost always been
politically neutral and is now the most politically stable
country in the world. The safe environment, natural
beauty, cleanliness, cultural and linguistic diversity, and
Swiss reputation for excellence and professionalism
add to the experience.
The transport and tourism infrastructures are among
the best in the world, making it very easy and
comfortable for visitors to travel around the country.
Switzerland is centrally located in Europe, giving
students the opportunity to visit and experience other
European countries.
Small Country, Big Heart
Switzerland and Tourism
Consisting
of
26
cantons (or states),
Switzerland is located
in the heart of Europe
and surrounded by
five countries: Italy,
France,
Austria,
Germany, and Liechtenstein. The total
population is approximately 7.6 million,
of
which
twenty
percent are expatriates. The largest cities
in Switzerland are:
Zurich (centre for
business and finance);
Basel (cultural capital); Geneva (home
of the United Nations
and International Red
Cross); Bern (capital
of the country); and
(Olympic
Lausanne
c apit al ). A lthough
Switzerland is a very
small country, four
languages are spoken:
German in the north and east; French in the west;
Italian in the south; and Romansh in the south-eastern
region.
Considered as the
birthplace of tourism,
people from all
over the world visit
Switzerland for its
natural beauty and
outstanding
quality
of service. This tiny
nation has 5,600
hotels that provide
accommodation
for
more than 35 million
guests every year!
The Swiss hospitality
industry
not
only
welcomes many international
visitors
but also employs a
truly international
work force. This is
reflected in Swiss
hotel management
schools in terms
of the curriculum
offered and the mix
of the student population. In a country
that has some of the
most prestigious hotel management schools in the
world, the quality of the country’s human resources is
second to none, ensuring an extensive supply of highly
qualified staff for the industry.

throughout the calendar year satisfying all cultural
tastes in music from pop to jazz to classical. In short,
Switzerland offers an extensive range of sporting and
cultural activities.

set up directly in front of the “Arrivals” exit at Geneva Airport. It is
open from 8:30 to 23:00 hrs. Friday until Sunday prior to the start
of term. Senior students will welcome you at the desk, help you buy
the train ticket and ensure you take the correct train to Le Bouveret.

(changing trains in St-Maurice). The ticket costs CHF 40. Trains
from Geneva Airport usually depart every two hours and take
approximately two hours to Le Bouveret.
Direct trains from Zurich Airport with a change in Lausanne take
nearly three hours so we recommend you book your flight through
to Geneva even though you may stop over in Zurich.

Train schedules normally change once per year even
though in most cases the changes are not significant. Please visit the website of the Swiss Railways
(www.rail.ch) to check for updated departure and arrival times. There you will also find interesting
information about travelling in Switzerland by train, student passes, European connections, etc.

Dress Code
Don‘t Forget
César Ritz Colleges Switzerland expects all students to dress and present
themselves in business attire. When students are scheduled in class or are
participating in formal or special occasions, business attire must be worn by
everyone, unless announced otherwise. This includes the college name badge
and pin which should be worn at all times with business dress. Examples of
business dress are provided below, but the overall appearance of a student
should be discreet, conservative and professional.
Outside of these hours, on weekends from Friday after class to Sunday night,
during holidays when there are no classes and during the summer break,
casual dress, including jeans, t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops may be adopted
but students are expected to ensure that garments are in good taste and in
good repair (for example, no ripped jeans).
Male Students
You should wear dark suits with matching trousers (blue, grey, brown or
black), a classic collared long-sleeved shirt and a tie. Cardigans/pullovers worn
under jackets are permitted as long as they are v-neck and the tie is visible.
You should also bring black leather shoes with laces, and black socks.
You must have your hair cut to the regulated length above the collar and
not coloured. "Skin-head” type haircuts are not allowed due to their
unprofessional look and the connotations involved with such haircuts.
Earrings and piercings of any kind are not permitted. You must be cleanshaven at all times or have a well-trimmed beard or moustache when you
come to classes or special events. During the term, you may not start growing
a beard or moustache, or dye your hair.
Female Students
You should wear "clean line" skirts/dresses/trousers with coordinating/
matching jackets and a blouse or top. No skirts/dresses should be more than
7 cm above the knees. No t-shirts, polo shirts and/or transparent clothing are
allowed. Cardigans/pullovers worn under jackets are permitted as long as
they are v-neck. You should also bring plain, black closed leather shoes with
a small heel, and skin-coloured stockings.
Generally most items are available in town or in the region and you will
be able to purchase whatever you need. You will notice, however, that
the prices are usually more expensive than they would be in your country.

The Swiss law on health insurance makes it compulsory for any resident in Switzerland, except European Community
(EU) students, to be insured with a Swiss-based health insurance company. As a student resident (B) permit holder,
you will automatically enter into this category and will be therefore covered for health, accidents and travel during
your studies, internships in Switzerland and abroad (worldwide coverage, except USA) by Allianz Worldwide Care
(AWC).
The cost of the insurance for students under 30 years old is CHF 175 per month. For students above 30 years old, the
cost of insurance is CHF 195 per month. If you are a Swiss or EU citizen, you have the possibility to keep your own
insurance, provided that you can submit an insurance policy that is approved by the Swiss government. Please provide
your EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) upon arrival.
Your Arrival
We are looking forward to welcoming you between 9:00 and 22:30 hrs on Friday,
Saturday or Sunday prior to the start of the term. You are required to inform the
school of your arrival date and time prior to your arrival.
For early or late arrivals you may be charged an extra fee. Should you
be unable to arrive during the days and times indicated, please contact
the college immediately.
Student Account
On arrival at the Professional Centre César Ritz, the student account of CHF 3,000
paid upon registration will be activated under your name at the college. This
account is not subject to interest rates and may not be used for any personal
expenses such as telephone fees, fines, outstanding bills or school fees.
The student account of CHF 3,000 is usually sufficient for six months
(i.e. two terms of study) for textbooks, service and kitchen uniforms, medical
insurance, as well as a student resident (B) permit.
For Culinary Arts students, your knife set and personal uniform should be paid
for in cash upon arrival.
In week three of each term, all students will receive a payment request of
CHF 3,000 for the following term. This down payment must be made for the
reservation of your room and course registration for the next term. This down
payment will then be deducted from the payment request sent out in week 11
of each term.
Students leaving for an internship in Switzerland or continuing their studies at César Ritz Colleges Switzerland
will be required to restock their student account.
English Placement
All non-native English speaking students without an official TOEFL/IELTS score, including those who took the online
Oxford Placement Test will need to take an English Placement Test upon arrival. Should the score be below the
required minimum level, you will be advised to enrol in the English Language Programme. Once the English level is
achieved, you will then be allowed to start the programme in which you have enrolled.

Doctors and Hospitals
When you are at the campus, our local doctors are in Le Bouveret next to the town pharmacy and in Vionnaz. To
make sure that the related treatment is covered by insurance, you must only use the school doctors or the hospitals in
Aigle or Monthey. If you wish to see a different doctor, you should make sure that the college’s insurance will cover
the related expenses and make your own arrangements for transport. If possible, appointments should be made
outside of class time and must be made through the Head of Housekeeping.
During your internship, if you need to be hospitalized for a planned operation (e.g. surgery) you must be hospitalized
in the Canton of Valais. However, if it is an emergency, you can go to the hospital nearest to your in-training location.
At all times, the Resident Assistants are able to provide assistance and further information.

Student Committee
Student Club
The aim of the Student Committee is to represent the entire student body.
The committee works closely with the Student Activities Coordinator
to promote and improve your quality of life. Some of the responsibilities of
the Student Committee are to organize extracurricular activities and speak
on your behalf.
The Student Club, the famous “Dog & Lamppost”,
is located next to the Bellevue building and is run by
the Student Committee. It is generally open on Friday
and Saturday nights.
Remember that you are
encouraged to suggest activities that would interest
you to the Student Committee or the Student Services.
Chances are a fellow student may also be interested.
Get involved and enjoy the
experience!
Check the screen regularly at the Reception as it lists
a variety of themed parties and events.
More activities may be found on
www.ritz.edu under News.
Social Activities
Events and excursions are scheduled
regularly to help enhance your life
outside the campus environment.
This gives you the chance to
develop
your
professional
knowledge and discover the
country where you are living
through such excursions. Some
of these include but are not
limited to city excursions in
and out of Switzerland as well
as sporting trips.
Theme nights and special events
happen regularly. The most famous
celebrations include the Icebreaker
party, the Oriental Moon Festival, and
the summer BBQ.
Hot Places
The surroundings of Le Bouveret offer other
ways to enjoy your stay at the Professional
Centre César Ritz. As a student, you will enjoy
meeting your friends in Montreux as well as in
the summer taking part in the world famous
Montreux Jazz Festival (www.montreuxjazz.
com). Mid-term and birthday parties are also
organized by the Student Committee from time
to time in Lausanne’s clubs such as the D!Club and
the Mad.
16
17
Sports
At César Ritz Colleges Switzerland, learning continues
beyond the classroom walls. This is why the Professional
Centre César Ritz offers ideal study conditions and
leisure facilities. Everyone needs to unwind after a busy
study schedule, therefore our campus has areas for you
to meet fellow students and relax.
We believe that giving you an opportunity to participate
in physical activity allows you to fully develop your
potential. You will, therefore, have the opportunity to
take part in several sports and activities on campus even
daily if you wish to do so.
Team Activities
There are facilities to practice soccer (football) and cricket
on campus. The soccer field, which also serves as a
cricket pitch, is situated at the back of the school.
18
We also have the use of an indoor basketball court
at the Ecole des Missions, situated about 300
meters from the campus. See the Student Activities
Coordinator for any information and make use
of these facilities.
Fitness Room
A fully equipped gym is available for students in the
basement of the Bellevue building. The gym is open daily
from 8:00 to 22:00 hrs. Also, on the first floor of the
Bellevue building, there is a work-out room.
Winter Activities
Summer Activities
Although Switzerland is known as an all-seasons
tourist paradise, it is really during the winter months
that the country has a truly breathless array of delights
on offer. From December until April, Switzerland
provides the best opportunities for winter sports
in the world. There are numerous world-class ski
resorts, many of which are located close to the school
(Portes du Soleil, Villars, Verbier, Chamonix) and are
easily accessible by public transport. Ski trips
are organized by the school on most weekends when
snow conditions permit. In general, there is something for every taste including tobogganing, skating,
hockey, ice climbing and mountaineering.
There are many hiking trails around the school and the
surrounding area. The mountainous region is beautiful
and perfect for such adventures. Summer skiing is also
available and very popular so real ski enthusiasts can
quench their desire to ski twelve months a year. The area
is also great for mountain biking and horseback riding.
Because the Le Bouveret Campus is located next to Lake
Geneva, it offers a great opportunity for you to enjoy
swimming, sailing, waterskiing and canoeing.
