Come Holy Spirit! Veni Sancte Spiritus!
Today is Pentecost Sunday. We remember the great gift of God the Holy Spirit, coming down
from heaven and poured into the disciples of Jesus like a driving wind and a burning fire.
Pentecost marks a deep change in the lives of the followers of Jesus. No longer will they hide in
fear behind closed doors. Now they’ll share the fire of God’s love that burns within them,
fulfilling the mission of Jesus to bring his good news to all nations. Because of their faithfulness,
we worship in church today. Someone handed on this fire of faith from generation to generation
until it caught fire in your heart. It’s like the Olympic torch. That torch not only burns for the one
who carries it; it is passed on to the next runner in the race. The same fire of God’s love burns within you. Who will
you hand it on to? How will you hand on the fire of God’s love? This is why we pray, “Come Holy Spirit!” We
want the fire of the Holy Spirit to burn ever more deeply within us. We want to follow his inspirations and
promptings in all we do. We want to bring his divine life to the whole world, starting with those closest to us. The
Holy Spirit wants to fill all the places where you live and work and rest.
We remember…
Tomorrow is Memorial Day. Let us remember in prayer those in the military who have given their lives to protect
our earthly peace and freedom. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend. Let us do our part
to foster peace in our hearts and in our neighborhoods. We can do this by not giving in to gossip and rash judgment
and violence. On our own soil, rioting and death have occurred because we have not followed our good laws that
seek to discover who is guilty and who is innocent and apply the proper punishment as needed with due process and
in due time. Instead, we convict one another in the court of the media. Here I am thinking of the tragic riots in
Ferguson and Baltimore. Even after guilt has been established, we have to guard our hearts against brutality. Here I
am thinking of the Boston bomber. In his case, a death sentence is justified. However, St. John Paul II taught us not
to apply the sentence of death when the guilty person could be prevented from causing further harm. If we do not
guard our hearts, we too will become the killers we despise. Yes, there is much evil in the world; but Christ has
shown us a nobler way. He did not offer sweet sounding words and sugary ideas—he simply and freely offered his
life for the healing of the world’s evils. He calls each one of us to do the same.

The New Testament Sacrament of Holy Orders is a gift that remains forever. Fifty years ago, that gift was bestowed
on Fr. Dave Dillon in his religious family of the Carmelites. In honor of that grace-filled day, and in gratitude for
his generous past service here at St. Matthew’s, Fr. Dave will celebrate the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, May 30.
After Mass, we will gather in Hurley Hall for refreshments and to congratulate him. Fifty years isn’t forever, but
it’s a good start. God bless you, Fr. Dave!
On the weekend of June 13 and 14, we will honor Fr. Rogelio Martinez. He has served faithfully here for just two
years, but with great love. Now he will be returning to his religious family of the Franciscans. We will have
refreshments in the narthex after all the Masses so that we can thank Fr. Rogelio and send him along with our
prayers that his new assignment be filled with many blessings. God bless you, Fr. Rogelio!

A SIGNIFICANT DAY
“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a
strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they
were” (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit’s arrival on that first
Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what
it’s like when our windows are open just as a summer storm
rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants
shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the
orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as
celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that
have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always
needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God’s Spirit to blow
away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith.
Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit.
With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of
salvation. Today, this is no less true for us.

News from
St. Matthew Parish School — Honoring Traditions
We have many end of the year traditions here at St. Matthew Parish School. One fun tradition is when the Junior
High students go on a field trip together. This year all 90 Junior High students went for a day of fun to our beautiful
city of Chicago. Together they rode the Tall Ships, visited Lincoln Park Zoo and Millennium Park, and completed
their day with dinner at the German restaurant, Chicago Brauhaus. As always, our children and teachers received
many compliments about their wonderful behavior. The best part of the trip was when all the children joined in for
the Chicken Dance at the restaurant plus just spending the day together.

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS
The Diocese of Joliet will hold its ThirtySeventh Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass
on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the
Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. If you are celebrating
either your 25th or 50th anniversary this year, please
contact the parish center by June 15th so that we may
submit your name to the Diocese for a formal invitation.
Those celebrating over 50 year anniversaries do not
receive a formal invitation, but will be able to register to
attend at a later date.

Inter-denominational Morning of Prayer for Life and Love at
St. Michael’s Parish Center, 310 S. Wheaton Ave. in Wheaton.

introduce Judy Sopoci as this year’s
Woman of the Year.
Any organization is only successful if
you have members like Judy. Her
good nature and ready smile are
always present no matter the task.
Judy co-chairs the twice a year blood
drive, has worked tirelessly for the
craft show and chairs the bake sale.
Judy is up early and works Market Day each month.
Most importantly is Judy’s faith, pleasant attitude and
presence.
Judy’s family includes husband, Dan, seven children, 16
grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
Thank you Judy, we are honored and proud to have you as

UN DÍA SIGNIFICATIVO
“De repente se oyó un gran ruido que venía del cielo, como
cuando sopla un viento fuerte, que resonó por toda la casa
donde se encontraban” (Hechos 2:2). La llegada del Espíritu
Santo en ese primer Pentecostés fue marcada por un viento
fuerte. Todos sabemos lo que se siente cuando abrimos las
ventanas en el momento en que se levanta una tormenta de
verano. Las cortinas vuelan, los papeles se elevan, las plantas
tiemblan y el polvo se revuelve. Un ventarrón que perturba el
orden de nuestro hogar. La venida del Espíritu Santo, que
celebramos cada año durante Pentecostés, también puede
perturbar hábitos que se han vuelto cómodos y organizados. La
Iglesia siempre necesita de Pentecostés. Necesitamos el soplo
del Espíritu de Dios para que disperse nuestras
autocomplacencias o cualquier malestar que ha penetrado
nuestra fe. Jesús sopla en sus discípulos y reciben el Espíritu
Santo. Con esa recepción viene el poder de compartir la Buena
Nueva de la salvación. Hoy esa realidad no es diferente a lo que
se espera de nosotros.
