Both routes are divided in stages and are to be completed over a number of days. Hikers and alpinists can spend a few or more days in the heart of the Dolomites without fear of losing the way thanks to the very clear and custom-made network of signs specifically placed on both routes. The DBT Expert route is technically the most difficult between the two. This trail is for experienced hikers who feel comfortable with height, snowfields and via ferrata (climb with a fixed protection system such as wire ropes, pegs and ladders) where mountaineering equipment is compulsory. However, the most difficult passages can always be avoided by an apposite easier route. Indeed, the so-called DBT Expert Variants are planned to give an easy alternative to technical paths and to give the chance to shorten the trek if desired. The DBT Country route instead unwinds at a lower altitude and does not present any technical difficulty. For this trek no particular skill is required a part from a great will to walk long distances in order to cross on foot 6 valleys and their ancient villages, cultures and people. Along both routes there are places where to stop for food and overnight. On the DBT Expert route hikers will find mountain huts, bivouacs and malghe. Malga (malghe in the plural form) is the Italian word for shepherds’ hut and describes a building at around 1800 metres altitude where cattle are kept for summer pasture and where cheese is produced. On the other hand, the many villages crossed by the DBT Country give a wide selection of accommodations, such as hotels, farmhouses, B&Bs. It takes at least 5 days to walk the entire DBT Expert while for the DBT Country the time needed is of 7 days. However, the Variant routes allow hikers to shorten the trek and adjust it to make it suitable to the time at disposal. DBT offers hikers the possibility of discovering the wilderness of Adamello Brenta Nature Park and the beauty of the 6 most panoramic valleys of Trentino: Val di Non, Val di Sole, Val Rendena with Madonna di Campiglio, Giudicarie Centrali, Terme di Comano and Paganella region. All without compulsory stages or an enforced pace. The routes are divided in several stages and any of these represents a starting point. Therefore, everyone can plan their own DBT as they please, depending on their own ability and time available. Half of it links paths and mountain huts which for over 150 years have been at the heart of the history of mountaineering and climbing. The second half of this route instead delves deep in the less known area of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park where wide green valleys and pastures are dotted with wooden malghe. The satisfaction of leaving behind a hard climb, the desire of reaching a new destination and the astonishment when unexpected views open up.. this is Dolomiti di Brenta Trek! The DBT Expert route runs at an average altitude of 2000 metres. It is planned as a circuit and follows 89 kilometres of clearly signposted paths with a total elevation gain of 8.170 metres. The southern side of the Brenta Dolomites is extremely popular and therefore offers a wide range of mountain huts where hikers can stop for food and overnight. Being the northern part much wilder and never crowded, hikers have to adapt to sleep in bivouacs and malghe. Only 2 of the 11 malghe are catered and therefore they represent an important stopover. Malga Spora and Malga Tuena are 8 hours walk from each other and both offer half board service and a comfortable room to spend the night. Being 8 hours walk from each other, it is often suggested to plan the distance between them as a stage. Everyone can plan its own DBT expert according to their ability and time available. To walk the whole circuit it takes at least 5 days. However, the Variants allow hikers to both shorten the circuit and avoid the most difficult section like the via ferrata and to end the trek exactly where it started. The trek can be started in any of the 6 valleys that it crosses. The following description starts from Cles in Val di Non but it is just an example. By car it is possible to reach the area Lago del Durigat above the village of Cles, in Val di Non. From Lago del Durigat (m. 1860) you reach Malga Clesera and following the DBT waymarks you climb up to Passo della Forcola from where you will appreciate a wonderful landscape over Monte Peller just left behind. You cross now the green Pian della Nana valley where you can often see marmots and you reach Passo della Nana (m. 2195) first and Selletta della Nana (m. 2530) then where a path descends to A. Costanzi Bivouac (m. 2365). From the bivouac the DBT Expert descends the steep Val del Vento and then it crosses Val Centonia until it reaches Malga Mondifrà (m. 1632) where you can stop for some great food and homemade cheese. From Malga Mondifrà the route takes you to Malga Vaglianella (m. 1826) and Malga Vagliana (m. 1974) and from now on you will notice the change of the landscape. The green colour of the pastures lets the typical light grey of the Dolomia rock have its seat. Leaving the green pastures behind you reach now the Rifugio Graffer (m. 2261), Rifugio Tuckett (m. 2271) and Rifugio Ai Brentei (m. 2182). From Rifugio Ai Brentei to Malga Spora the DBT Expert is considered for experienced hikers with equipment and represents many difficulties. The use of harness, helmet and crampons is essential. Those who want to avoid this section can follow the Variant that in 1 hour of trekking takes to Rifugio Tosa Pedrotti. From Rifugio Brentei you continue on the Sentiero Alpinistico “Daniele Martinazzi” SAT 327 (EEA – MD) that passes the foot of the frozen wall of Canalone Neri that joins Cima Tosa to Crozzon di Brenta and then you climb to below the north edge of Crozzon di Brenta until on snowfields you reach the Bocca dei Camosci (m. 2784). From here a path descends on gravel to Rifugio XII Apostoli (m. 2487). From Rifugio XII Apostoli you climb up to the Bocchetta dei Due Denti (m. 2859) and then you descend the other side of the mountain on the exposed iron ladders of Ferrata Castiglioni where the use of harness and protective helmets is required. Rifugio Agostini (m. 2405) is only 30 minutes walk from the bottom of the via ferrata. From Rifugio Agostini the panoramic Sentiero Palmieri takes you up to Forcolotta di Noghera (m. 2423) and reaches then Rifugio Tosa Pedrotti. From this refuge starts the exposed Osvaldo Orsi path that in ups and downs goes round the bottom of the large rock flank of Cima Brenta Alta and after a while comes out in Busa degli Sfulmini and Massodi (m. 2380) crowned by the superb rock wall of Cima Brenta Alta, Campanil Basso and Campanil Alto and Cima degli Sfulmini. The path continues horizontally until just below Bocca di Tuckett (m. 2540). Here starts the long descend down the Val Perse valley with great views over Molveno Lake and after touching the bottom of this valley the DBT Expert climbs the other side up to Passo del Clamer (m. 2164). Here begins the second part of the route which winds through the wildest and lesser known area of the Group. On Passo Clamer you get a last glimpse of the spectacular view of the Central Brenta massif you have just traversed with its large screes and karst depressions filled with hanging glaciers and snowfields. From now on the itinerary features green valleys with a wealth of flora, fauna, meadows and malghe. The contrast between the grey rocks and the green habitat of the bear is striking. From Passo Clamer you descend to Malga Spora (m. 1855) and you follow direction towards Lago di Tovel which is north. You encounter a great number of malghe: Malga Campa (m. 1975), Malga Loverdina (m. 1768), Malga Termoncello (m. 1852), Malga Flavona (m. 1858) and Malga Pozzol (m. 1632). From Malga Pozzol the route crosses a wild area rich in fauna and reaches Malga Tuena (m. 1740) that offers board and lodging. From Malga Tuena you enter a path that after pleasant ups and downs climbs up steep to Malga Tassulla (m. 2090) which is only 30 minutes walk from lago del Durigat where the description of this tour started. 11 Web site Equipment Signs www.dolomitibrentatrek.it Harness + via ferrata The signage is based on the traditional red and Here you can find all the kit + helmet + crampons white signs which also carry the green DBT technical information about The logo with the word Expert written in red. the route: distances, elevation considered for experienced gain, accommodation hikers. For your safety the use of harness, via ferrata kit and helmet is always recommended. Variants Variants are an easy alternative route to the most difficult sections and they also allow to shorten the circuit. VARIANT FROM RIFUGIO BRENTEI TO RIFUGIO TOSA PEDROTTI: avoids the southern part of the trek where the ferrata Castiglioni and the technically most diffucul paths are. In 1 hour it takes to Rifugio Tosa Pedrotti while the original DBT Expert route takes 8 hours walk. VARIANT MALGA SPORA A / MALGA FLAVONA / MALGA TUENA – PASSO DEL GROSTE’ / RIFUGIO GRAFFER: it cuts the circuit halfway from east to west. Hikers who only have 3 or Elevation profile 4 days at disposal can choose to walk only either the southern loop (the most famous and exposed part) or the northern loop (very wild and never crowded). Accommodations The southern part of the circuit has many mountain huts with half board service while the northern part welcomes hikers in bivouac and basic malghe. In July and August it is recommended to book mountain huts in advance. Bivouac and malghe put on hikers’ disposal beds, blankets and stove. Otherwise, from here in summer time a shuttle bus drives hikers to Vallesinella and from here Rifugio Tuckett and Rifugio Brentei can be reached in 2 hours walk. VAL DI SOLE From Loc. Belvedere close to Folgarida it is possible to reach on foot ex Malga Scale. 13 DOLOMITI Di BRENTA TREK COUNTRY 14 A long distance walk through the villages at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites Dolomiti di Brenta Trek Country is also a trek circuit but it develops at a lower altitude and it follows paths, forestry roads, mule tracks, old irrigation channels and ancient Roman ways. This long trail crosses woods, grassland, fruit orchard and villages combining so the trekking experience with history and culture. The DBT Country is 160 kilometres long with a total elevation gain of 7200 metres. At least 7 days are needed to walk the entire circuit but everyone can plan the trek in a different number of stages as how they please. The DBT Country also has some variants that allow to shorten the route walking in a loop anyway. Any village along the route can be chosen as starting point; the following description is just an example. From Cles drive to Lago del Durigat where you can park your car. From here follow the DBT signs towards Malga Clesera and then descend to bivacco Mezol until you reach loc. Regazzini near Malè, in Val di Sole. You follow now the bottom of this valley and when you reach Carciato the DBT Country signs lead you up to Dosso di Santa Brigida. From here you descend to the Meledrio river and you cross it to reach Malga Presson bassa, loc. Belvedere in Folgarida and Campo Carlo Magno. Here the route overlaps the Giro di Campiglio path that reaches Rifugio Vallesinella and Rifugio Cascate di Mezzo. Then you descend to Malga Brenta Bassa from where you can appreciate a breath-taking view towards Cima Brenta, Cima Mandron, Torre di Brenta, Campanil Alto, Campanil Basso, Cima Brenta Alta, Cima Margherita and Crozzon di Brenta. From Malga Brenta Bassa you continue the descent until you reach Sant’Antonio di Mavignola and from here the DBT Country continues flat to Carisolo and Caderzone Terme. After passing the golf course in Carisolo the route takes you up to the village of Bocenago and the mountains above it which offer great views over Val Rendena. The DBT Country continues at the same altitude to Passo delle Malghette, Passo Campiol and Capanna Durmont. From this peak you descend now towards Montagne and on the way you encounter Villa Santi, a museum house of the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. From now on the DBT Country crosses a series of ancient villages where it is possible to encounter the traditional architecture of buildings which are made of stones and wood. In sequence you cross Binio, Cerana, Bolzana, Coltura, Iron and Stenico. From Stenico the DBT Country runs along the famous San Vili route which in Roman times used to connect Val Rendena with Trento. It crosses the villages of Seo, Sclemo and Tavodo and then descends towards Andogno where it meets the river Ambiez and follows it backwards up to Dorsino. After crossing the centre of this village you walk through grassland and you reach San Lorenzo in Banale which has been awarded as “one of the most beautiful villages of Italy”. From here you follow again the San Vili route that takes to Moline, Deggia, Nembia and finally reaches the famous Moveno lake. After walking along the shores of the lake you enter a fresh valley that leads up to Andalo and Cavedago. Val di Non is now quite close and from Cavedago you enter it on a comfortable path that has been built out of a former irrigation channel. This panoramic path develops along the east side of Val di Non above the villages of Sporminore, Campodenno, Termon, Cunevo, Flavon and Terres. Once you reach the apple orchards above Terres the DBT Country leads you to a pedestrian tunnel. This tunnel was also used as irrigation channel and it has been recently equipped with lights and allows hikers to quickly reach Val di Tovel. This tunnel is 2,5 km long and inside the temperature is constantly around 10°C, even in summer. Thanks to this shortcut in only 45 minutes you reach the Antiche Seghe path on the orographic right side of Val di Tovel. This path takes to the famous Lago di Tovel and crosses a rocky area which resembles a lunar landscape. Once you have reached the lake you follow its shore and just before the Nature Park Info Point you take the path to your right which climbs to Malga Tuena, a shepherd’s hut which provides board and lodging. From here the DBT Country follows the same paths as the DBT Expert route. From Malga Tuena you reach the steep Val Formigia and you climb it to the top until you reach the green and spectacular valley of Pian della Nana. Here you find Malga Tassulla, famous for the production of cheese, which is only 30 minutes from Lago del Durigat where this description started. 15 Web site Equipment Signs www.dolomitibrentatrek.it In order to complete the DBT The DBT Country runs along paths, forestry roads and Here you can find all the Country you do not need tracks that sometimes used to lack official signage. To the east it includes the amazing Dolomiti di Brenta, a fairy-tale like series of pinnacles, towers and sheer cliff faces. The sublime landscapes and incredibly strong colours of this massif have always attracted travellers and artists and indeed on June the 29th 2009 the Dolomites have been inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list because of their exceptional beauty, their unique landscape and their scientific geological importance. The Adamello Brenta Nature Parks protects the environmental characteristic of the area and promotes its natural, cultural and human heritage as well as a sustainable conduct. Hiking and trekking are the most traditional ways of experiencing nature in complete harmony with the territory. Walking is the right mean to notice the still pace of nature: the extremely rich flora composed of more than 1200 species: solitaire roe deer, majestic red deer, agile chamois, and… the brown bear! Currently the brown bear population is of about 30 specimens. In 1996 the Adamello Brenta Nature Park lunched the Life Ursus Projects with the aim of avoiding extinction by reintroducing 10 brown bears (Ursus arctos L.) which adapted extremely well to the new environment generating a conspicuous population. The presence of the brown bear is not dangerous for humans. It is extremely rare to encounter it but if it happens just remember a few simple rules: do not be laud, let the bear notice your presence by talking normally without overreacting such as running away and screaming. Undoubtedly the bear will change its directions before you do. Respect flowers and plants: their colours and smells are there for those who will come after you too. 2. When you see wild animals keep the distance otherwise they may be easily scared. They are also afraid of dogs and therefore it is compulsory to walk them on a leach. 3. Even amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates (such as insects, shellfish, etc.) are fundamental for the environment and they deserve your respect. 4. The worst enemy of forests is fire. If you want to light up a fire please only use the designated areas that the Park has set up. 5. Minerals and fossils cannot be picked up. There have been there for millions of years thank also to the respect of those who saw them before you. 6. 7. 8. Turn off the sound and turn on your senses. Let the Park be your soundtrack! In order to preserve the natural balance of the environment it is not possible to camp. It is allowed to pick mushrooms. However, it is necessary to obtain a permission which is issued by the local townhalls. 9. If it happens to you to find a war wreck please leave it where it is. It is forbidden to collect them and touching them can also be dangerous. You would rather inform the Park administration about the finding. 10. Respect bivouacs and unattended refuges as well as their furniture. You can rather leave some useful things for those who will come after you! 19 SHEPHERDS’ HUTS THAT ENSHRINE TRADITION 20 21 Useful numbers Useful numbers • Ambulance / first aid 118 • Fire brigades 115 • Carabinieri police emergency number 113 • Alpine rescue 118 • Italian Automobile Club rescue 116 • Weather forecast ph. +39.0461.238939 – www.meteotrentino.it Health • Public hospital – TIONE – Ph. 0463.331111 • Public hospital – MEZZOLOMBARDO – Ph. 0461.611111 • Public hospital - CLES – Ph. 0463.660111 22 Taxi service and baggage transfer (only possible along the DBT Country route with service-charge) • Autocampiglio – M.
