Selling Guide to Sony smart TV
the world’s smarter and smartest TVs
Television Redefined:
Sony smart TV
A new technology is sweeping through home entertainment, changing everything in its path: smart TV. As usual,
one company has been innovating from the beginning, with the most sophisticated features and the highest performance.
It’s Sony.
Sony BRAVIA® smart TV gives your customers powerful advantages:
1. More of the Internet content your customers want. All the
major TV brands offer YouTube, Netflix®, Pandora®, Twitter™, and
Facebook®. Sony matches all of that, plus access to the a wider
variety of programming partners including Q Music Unlimited and
Crackle, a Sony service with over 250 FREE movies and TV shows
every month. We can do these things because we’re not only a
major television manufacturer, we’re also a major Hollywood studio.
2. More music. Now your customers can use their televisions as a
convenient gateway to the world of Internet music. But while
Samsung, for example, offers access to only two music services,
Sony delivers seven. It’s a huge advantage for anyone who
likes music.

3. More power to make the Internet work for your customers.
Every BRAVIA® smart TV has features that the competition reserves for higher-end models, including built-in web browser and free
2
Skype-to-Skype calling. While Samsung reserves built-in wireless LAN for just a few series, Sony has it on most of our current models.
4. Better picture quality. In addition to everything Sony does to
optimize the picture for Blu-ray Disc™, DVD, broadcast, cable and satellite, we have the new X-Reality™ and X-Reality PRO
engines to take streaming video picture quality to unexpected
new heights.
5. More convenience. Sony has cool new ways to bring Internet and television content together. With BRAVIA® widgets you can multi-task. As just one example, you can follow an out-of-town
score in a small window while you watch the home team on the rest of the screen.

While Sony BRAVIA® smart TV is undoubtedly exciting, Sony Internet TV powered by Google TVTM is the smartest TV, period.
There’s a full-featured ChromeTM browser; fast, fluid Flash® support; 1.66 GHz Intel® Atom™ processor and 8GB of memory.
As a result, webpages load twice as fast as on the Samsung 8000 and nearly 1.5 times as fast than on the LG 6500,
according to third-party research6. Your whole entertainment experience is faster, smarter, smoother and better-integrated.
It’s an entirely new entertainment experience. And only Sony has it.
We’re excited about Sony smart TV, its ability to redefine television and deliver your customers enriched,
energized, empowered home entertainment.
This guide will prepare you to understand, appreciate and sell this new entertainment experience.

What is Internet TV?
A “smart TV” is the home television equivalent of a Smart Phone. It’s a TV that accesses and displays Internet content along
with conventional television channels. So in addition to their usual TV shows, your customers can enjoy such essential
web-based services as YouTube, Netflix®, Skype2, Pandora® and Hulu Plus1.
Typically, Smart TVs also support DLNA® connectivity for network access to your personal entertainment content: photos,
videos and music. By downloading a free app for either AndroidTM or Apple® iOS phones, you can also use your smart
phone as a TV remote control4.
As you will see, Sony smart TV satisfies all of these basic requirements, and does much, much more.

Advancing Technology and Evolving Feature Names
If you’ve been around television sales, you’ve probably noticed that Sony has updated our smart TV feature names. We’ve
done it to accommodate the launch of Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV™, to anticipate the launch of the Android
MarketTM for Google TV and to take advantage of phrases that consumers recognize and appreciate.
• “BRAVIA® Internet Video Link” became “BRAVIA® Internet Video” and now “Sony smart TV.”
• “BRAVIA® Internet Video channels” are now known as “Apps.”
• “BRAVIA® Internet Video widgets” are also called “Apps.”

The Importance of Picture Quality
Web video is full of picture quality issues. It may look great on your cellphone and “a little grainy” on your laptop, but it
can be nearly unwatchable when scaled up for display on a 60-inch television. That’s why every Sony BRAVIA® smart TV
includes the X-Reality™ picture engine and top models go even further with the X-Reality PRO engine.
• The X-Reality engine uses an intelligent MPEG Noise Reduction to carefully reduce the noise common in Internet video, while Intelligent Image Enhancer improves edge sharpness, optimizes texture,
color and contrast.
• The X-Reality PRO engine has both of these features and adds a
second chip to analyze the picture scene-by-scene, pixel-by-pixel. The system uses sophisticated
pattern matching to optimize the picture. The result? Sony’s best picture, ever.

Selling Sony smart TV
In classic sales technique, you don’t launch into a product pitch immediately. Asking questions to
carefully qualify the customer will pay off in two important ways. First, the more questions you
ask -- and the more carefully you listen to the answers -- the more convinced your
customer will be that you really have their best interests at heart. Second, by
repeating back the customer’s stated preferences and drawing the
connection to product benefits, you’ll make the sales pitch a
custom-tailored slam dunk:
“You told me you liked movies. This Sony accesses over 250 FREE
movies and TV episodes every month with the Crackle Internet
service. It’s free content and only Sony gives you access straight
from the menu.”

Top Ten Questions to Ask the Customer
The following questions will help you turn curiosity about smart TV into Sony sales.
Question #10:
Do you ever get bored watching the same old TV and cable channels?
Benefit:
Stream literally millions of videos from the web, right to your TV.
Explanation:
Expanding your entertainment options is the essential benefit of Sony smart TV. You can search and stream a staggering variety of web content and enjoy it on the largest screen in your house.
YouTube and Netflix® are just the beginning. Choose from a long list of available apps.
Product Lines:

Question #9:
Do you care about picture quality?
Benefit:
Sony makes web videos look their best.
Explanation:
Web videos that might be okay on a small, low-res PC screen can look blocky, fuzzy and noisy on a big High Definition TV. Sony’s
X-Reality and X-Reality PRO picture engines make a major
difference, reducing MPEG noise and optimizing the picture
contrast, color, texture and edge sharpness. The X-Reality PRO
system goes even further with a second processing chip that
analyzes the scene pixel-by-pixel and uses sophisticated
pattern matching.

Question #8:
Do you like movies?
Benefit:
Easy access to over 250 FREE movies and TV episodes every month.
Explanation:
Enjoy fast access to Sony’s exclusive Crackle Internet streaming service, which takes advantage of Sony’s own Columbia Pictures movie catalog. There’s a large rotating selection of FREE movies and TV episodes, ready to stream. Sony can do these things because they’re not a only major television
manufacturer, they’re also a major Hollywood studio.
Product Lines:
Sony BRAVIA® smart TV / Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV
Question #7:
Do you like sports?
Benefit:
Follow the score of one game while you watch another.
Explanation:
If your team is locked in a playoff race, you can watch your team on television while following the competing team’s scores using the Yahoo! Sports app. With some other TV brands, Yahoo! Sports fills the entire screen. But Sony lets you watch television and follow Yahoo! Sports at the same time. It’s also great for following two sports like basketball and hockey when the seasons overlap.

Question #6:
Have you ever watched TV and wondered what song was playing in the background?
Benefit:
Sony’s Track ID feature can tell you!
Explanation:
The feature analyzes a sample of the music, then identifies the song and album in just seconds.
Question #5:
Do you ever use Twitter™ or Facebook®?
Benefit:
Update status, send and receive tweets while you watch television.
Explanation:
With Sony BRAVIA® smart TV, the Twitter™ and Facebook® widgets take up just a part of the screen, leaving the rest for watching TV.
Posting messages from Sony’s BRAVIA® TV remote is just like texting from a mobile phone.

Question #2:
Do you want the full power of the Internet on your TV?
Benefit:
With Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV, television and Internet are one.
Explanation:
Here is direct access to nearly the entire Internet, not just a tiny piece of it. With Picture-in-Picture
(Dual View), you can even browse the Internet and watch TV at the same time, on the same screen. The full web experience is made possible by a real 1.66 GHz Intel® Atom™ processor, a genuine Google
Chrome browser and 8GB of memory. According to third-party testing6, the Chrome web browser worked with every compatibility test while the Samsung and LG browser often crashed. Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV delivered superb HD streaming Flash® video while the Samsung displayed
minor distortion and the LG failed to display any Flash® video at all.

Question #1:
Do you want fast smart TV browsing?
Benefit:
Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV smokes the Samsung 8000 and LG 6500.
Explanation:
Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV is built from the ground up for the web. The genuine 1.66 GHz Intel® Atom™ processor and Google Chrome browser completely outclass the competition.
According to third-party testing6, web browsing was nearly twice as fast as on the Samsung 8000 and nearly 1.5 times as fast as on the LG 6500.
