Year in Review 2013 The Club Foundation had a positive year in 2013. We continued to provide funding for a multitude of programs that enhance the club industry and the educational opportunities available to club managers, as well as provided resources for new initiatives. Let’s take a look at how we offered support to our five targeted funding areas in 2013. Club Managers Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship Created in 2012 in honor of a pioneer who paved the way for countless club industry leaders, the Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship provides female club managers with the means to further their professional development through tuition costs and up to $1,000 in travel expenses to attend their choice of any Business Management Institute (BMI). In its second year, The Club Foundation Allocation Committee awarded the Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship to the following worthy individuals: Cindy Davis, CCM Athens Country Club Athens, TX Maria Domann, CCM Everett Golf & Country Club Everett, WA “I actually had the privilege of meeting Sally Burns Rambo, CCM, when I was a student in college. I feel so fortunate to have received this scholarship in her name. Thanks to this award I was able to continue my educational path within CMAA and attend BMI III, one of the final steps towards testing for my CCM. I feel so fortunate that we have a segment of CMAA and The Club Foundation that honors its men and women who are working so hard to achieve personal and professional goals.” Millie Harper, Assistant Clubhouse Manager Myers Park Country Club 2012 Sally Burns Rambo Scholarship Recipient Casey Newman The Briar Club Houston, TX Erica Pepper Colleton River Plantation Bluffton, SC LaRocca Family Executive Scholarship The LaRocca Family Executive Scholarship, created in 2011, saw its fourth and fifth recipients in 2013. Awarded to those managers that believe in giving back through mentoring, this scholarship provides funding for professional development at the executive level, as well as a second portion for a club manager that is being mentored by the recipient. The 2013 recipients of the LaRocca Family Executive Scholarship are: Robert Josey, CCM The Country Club Pepper Pike, OH Daniel Cooper, CCM The Springs Club Rancho Mirage, CA “I am deeply appreciative of the LaRocca Family’s commitment to our industry, to The Club Foundation, and specifically to individuals like me who earnestly seek to improve themselves for the future. Through this generous scholarship, the LaRocca Family has established a tremendous tradition for what true industry leadership really means.” David Dew, CCM, President/CEO, Lake Toxaway Country Club 2011 LaRocca Family Executive Scholarship Recipient Willmoore H. Kendall Scholarship The well-established Willmoore H. Kendall Scholarship added five new recipients in 2013. Recipients of the Kendall Scholarship receive funding to assist them in their pursuit of the Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation. This includes the tuition to attend BMI I, BMI II, BMI III, Certification Review Course, Study Guide and Exam Fees. Recipients also receive the tuition for BMI Golf Management or BMI Food & Beverage if required for certification eligibility. The 2013 Kendall Scholars are: “I applied for the Willmoore H. Kendall scholarship in 2008 and was pleasantly surprised when I was awarded the scholarship in early 2009. At the time, I was working for a small club that had limited funding to allow my pursuit of attaining my Certified Club Manager designation. The scholarship award allowed me to pursue my CCM education and relieve my club’s budgetary constraints. I feel that the scholarship not only provided me the wherewithal to achieve this designation, but also ignited a fire within me to become a better manager, leader and person.” Christopher Ferris, CCM General Manager Eastern Point Yacht Club 2009 Willmoore H. Worth, TX Nicki McLaughlin Amy Shaftel Porters Neck Country Club Seattle Yacht Club Wilmington, NC Seattle, WA Other Grants In addition to the previously listed scholarships, the Foundation funded many other programs in 2013 that benefit club industry professionals. • The Business Management Institutes received funding to enhance programming and keep materials on the cutting edge and up to date with current industry trends. • Funds from the Foundation also helped bring top-notch speakers like Tommy Spaulding and Jim Abbott to CMAA’s World Conference and Club Business Expo in San Diego, CA, giving attendees the opportunity to hear their inspiring messages and take away valuable insight. © Bruce Mathews • Additionally, the CMAA Leadership/Legislative Conference received funds allowing chapter leadership the opportunity to receive valuable education and the chance to network with peers. • We were happy to help support our friends in the Ohio Valley Chapter as they hosted the 2013 Mid-Management Conference in Indianapolis, IN. This significant event fills an essential role in the educational calendar for the Association and the Foundation is proud to pledge our support. © Bruce Mathews • Clarity Success Coaching received continued support, giving CMAA members the opportunity to utilize valuable life coaching expertise for personal and professional use. © Bruce Mathews Chapters As a benefit to CMAA Chapters, in 2012 the Foundation created a new program designed to showcase our Corporate Alliance Partners (CAP) as experts in their respective fields and provide chapters with enhanced educational opportunities for their members. The Corporate Alliance Partners (CAP) have continued their participation in the very successful Panels, aimed at bringing industry leaders to the chapter level. The Club Foundation funds the expenses for 80 percent of the program with the chapter only paying the expenses of one of the five industry experts in attendance. Building on the 2012 success where the CAP Trends Panel presented to three chapters, the panel has this year presented at the Mid-Management Conference in Indianapolis, IN, and the Mid-West Educational Forum in Chicago, IL. The interactive round-table sessions were a huge success with both managers and panel experts gaining much from the experience. In 2014, the Trends Panel will continue alongside the new Technology Panel which will focus on new technologies and the way that they can improve club operations. The CAP Sustainability Panel is due to be unveiled in 2015. At the CMAA World Conference and Club Business Expo in San Diego, CA, The Foundation awarded Chapter Workshop Grants to the Utah, Detroit and New England Chapters. Each of these chapters were randomly chosen from a drawing of their respective size categories and presented with a complimentary educational workshop from their choice of approved speakers. These workshops are paid for in whole by The Club Foundation which allows the chapter to use valuable resources for other educational offerings for chapter members. Additionally, the Foundation funded nearly $25,000 in education grants to chapters in support of the many awards programs available through CMAA. From Chapter of the Year to Excellence in Education, 21 chapters were eligible for valuable education grants through the awards programs in 2013. To date, each of the 46 chapters have received funding from the Foundation in some way! © Bruce Mathews © Bruce Mathews © Bruce Mathews Students In June, the Foundation awarded four Joe Perdue Scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a managerial career in the club industry. Since 1988, 172 students have received this prestigious scholarship totaling more than $300,000. These four future industry leaders shown to the right were chosen as the best of the best to represent The Club Foundation as the 2013 Joe Perdue Scholars. Through the Student Chapter Grant Program, we assisted 36 CMAA Student Chapters with expenses to attend the 86th World Conference and Club Business Expo in San Diego, CA, where they were provided with crucial networking and educational opportunities. In addition, we were proud to support the National Student Education Conference, hosted by the National Capital Chapter in Washington, DC, in the fall. All student chapter members also continue to benefit from the essential learning tools and resources available through their chapter’s subscription to Premier Club Services, paid for by The Club Foundation. “The Club Foundation helped me with tuition for all four years of college – I was one of the first students ever to receive a Club Foundation scholarship. Without the help I received from the Foundation, I may not have pursued my education, and would have lost both personally and professionally. I would like to thank The Club Foundation for all it has done to help make me a successful club manager.” R. Pierino III, CCM © CMAA Staff Industry The Foundation continues to support initiatives that enhance the future of the club industry. Organizations like the World Golf Foundation, Golf Environment Organization and We Are Golf promote the impact that our industry has on our economy as a whole. In addition, we support programs that make a lasting impact on the communities we visit for World Conference. At World Conference in San Diego, CA, in 2013, we presented a check to Tee it up for the Troops, an organization committed to helping veterans and their families. Significant Fundraising The Foundation provided more than $600,000 in scholarships and grants in 2013, up nine percent from 2012. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and Corporate Partners, we are able to continue to fund important educational initiatives as well as seek new ways to support and promote the best interests of the club industry. We continually look to our constituents to help us fulfill this mission. Special events held at the World Conference in San Diego, CA, brought in an additional $200,000. © Bruce Mathews In 2013, we added Insperity as CMAA’s official HR Solutions Provider. The relationship will bring in an additional $50,000 annually to The Club Foundation. Unfortunately, we said goodbye to one long-term supporter, Kopplin & Kuebler. We wish them well and appreciate all of their time, energy and commitment to achieving our goals and objectives. During CMAA’s World Conference in San Diego, more than 170 walkers and runners participated in the 2013 Run With the Presidents to support The Club Foundation and Tee it up for the Troops. With a finishing time of 19:21, Marc Skill, president of CMAA’s student chapter at Niagara University, led the pack on a scenic race along the water in San Diego. Thanks to the support of the participants and the sponsorship from CYBEX, The Club Foundation was able to present a check in the amount of $5,000 to Tee it up for the Troops to assist in their support of veterans and their families. © Bruce Mathews The 2013 International Wine Society Silent and Live Wine Auctions held in San Diego were a huge success. A recordbreaking total of more than $67,000 was raised to benefit The Club Foundation. This year, The Club Foundation awarded a $2,000 Chapter Education grant with each Bucky Award. The Per Capita Bucky was given to the chapter with the highest average donation amount per chapter member and the Overall Bucky was given to the chapter that donates the most wine by wholesale value to the auctions. Congratulations to the Golden State Chapter for winning the Overall Bucky and the Detroit Chapter for winning the Per Capita Bucky. The 2013 Club Foundation Event and Auction was a highly successful event. As well as some great live auction items, including a Green Jacket from The Masters, there were a number of silent auction items that generated valuable funds for the Foundation. Those in attendance had a great night of live entertainment, dancing and camaraderie.
