2010 Annual Report - Make-A
Making Wishes Come True Across Canada Annual Report 2010 Dear Friends, Dear Friends, At a recent celebration of World Wish Day®, the anniversary of the first wish ever granted, one of our brave wish children proudly told celebrants: “My wish changed my life…I asked for a butterfly garden…Make-AWish makes you feel special and in a way I almost feel lucky I got cancer...I wouldn’t have met all of these great people if I hadn’t.” Rachel’s pronouncement was astounding. But, however difficult for us to hear or fathom, it was her bold testament to the enigmatic power of the wish experience. A wish come true helps children feel stronger and more willing and able to battle their life-threatening medical conditions. Many wish parents have told us that the wish experience marked a turning point in their child’s fight against their illness. In a recent study involving some of our wish families: • • 89% of wish parents reported enhancement of their child’s emotional strength. 81% of parents observed an increased willingness of their child to comply with treatment protocols. one wish per day. With the help of over 800 volunteers across the country, the Foundation enriched the lives of 402 wish children, and their families, allowing them to move beyond the pain, fear and uncertainty of illness, and to embrace the love, kindness and caring of the everyday people who helped make their wish come true. In 2011, we will continue to create powerful, life-affirming experiences for eligible children. To make this happen, we will enhance the Foundation’s effectiveness, work together with our donors to enrich our fund raising efforts, support our front-of-the-line volunteers with the tools and training they need, and create awareness of our magical mission among Canadians. We will also work to ready our organization for the future, whatever may come. On behalf of our wish children and their families, thank you for helping to share the power of a wish®. Sincerely, • 75% of parents observed that the wish experience increased their child’s physical health and strength. For Rachel, or any wish child, a wish is not simply a “nice to have”, it is a “need to have.” In 2010, we proudly granted more than Janis Ostling President Jennifer Klotz-Ritter Chief Executive Officer Highlights from a Terrific Year! “I Olympic Games!” “I wish wishtotogogototothethe Olympic Games!” ÌÌ In 2010, we granted 402 wishes; more than a wish a day! Give Kids the World Village made such an impression on our family and it will always be a special place for us that we hope to one day go back to visit. There have been few moments over the last two years since Evan got sick, where we could truly relax and we had plenty of those moments on this trip. Thank you Make-A-Wish® Canada and its supporters.” “I wish to to go to Walt Disney World !” ® – Sarah, Evan’s mom. Evan age 5 These Amazing Wishes are Because of You “I wish to have a playhouse! I spent three months in the hospital, followed by seven months of chemotherapy and that’s when I was introduced to Make-A-Wish. I’ve always been a big fan of hip-hop. It has played a big part of my life but it was last year when I was in the hospital that I really began to take music more seriously. My experience with creating a song through HipHopCanada and C4 Entertainment was amazing, I loved it! When C4 sent us (my friends and I) the beat he made for us we all knew this had to be a serious song about the things we want in life and about becoming famous. I hope other lupus patients out there know to never give up and be strong no matter what. Thank you to HipHopCanada and C4 Entertainment who helped to grant my wish of recording a song!” Myle age 16 — Myle, Wish Child.
